Brad Marchand scores twice, Bruins beats Penguins 6-4

BOSTON (AP) Brad Marchand scored his second goal of the game with 1:57 left in the third period, and the Boston Bruins beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-4 Monday night after blowing a three-goal lead.

David Pastrnak, Jake DeBrusk and Torey Krug also scored for Boston (11-1-2), which has won six straight. Marchand added three assists, extending his point streak to 13 games.

Dominik Kahun, Nick Bjugstad, Bryan Rust and John Marino scored for Pittsburgh. Marino's was his first career NHL goal.

Marchand skated in down the left wing and fired a wrister that hit the far post and went into the net off the back of goalie Tristan Jerry. Krug's one-timer from the right circle had tied it 4-4 midway into the third.

Patrice Bergeron added an empty-net goal and Jaroslav Halak made 40 saves.

Players on Pittsburgh's bench were jumping up and down when Marino scored to cap the huge comeback and a frustrated Halak smashed his stick off the crossbar into a couple of pieces, tossing the handle off the backboards when he was done.

SENATORS 6, RANGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored twice and Anders Nilsson stopped 32 shots as Ottawa routed New York for its first road win of the season.

Tyler Ennis, Ron Hainsey, Brady Tkachuk and former Ranger Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for the Senators, who have four victories in 13 games. Ottawa also snapped the Rangers' two-game winning streak.

Rookie Kaapo Kakko opened the scoring for the Rangers with his third goal at 8:47 of the first. Artemi Panarin scored a power-play goal at 17:34 of the second, extending his points streak to five games with his team-best sixth goal of the season.

PREDATORS 6, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Nick Bonino scored the first of Nashville's five second-period goals, and the Predators easily dispatched Detroit.

Matt Duchene scored the last two goals of the middle period for Nashville, and Kyle Turris and Colton Sissons contributed a goal apiece. The first four goals by the Predators came in a span of 5:36. Filip Forsberg added a goal for Nashville in the third.

Andreas Athanasiou scored in the first period for the Red Wings, who are 1-10-1 in their last 12 games. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard was pulled in the second period, after 11 saves. Jonathan Bernier finished with nine saves on 11 shots.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) College basketball starts tonight; ton of games, which is fun, but handicapping these games is extremely difficult, because even a lot of these coaches have very little idea what they actually have right now.

There is so much turnover on rosters these days (over one transfer per team LY), that year-to-year continuity is virtually a thing of the past, which makes handicapping in November a very dangerous minefield for gamblers.

12) Take Nevada; they hired a new coach (Steve Alford) who inherited two players and had to recruit the rest of his squad after most of the year’s recruiting vines had already been harvested.

Even the blue bloods have issues; Duke has four new freshmen recruits, but how great are they really? ESPN touted Zion Williamson as the second coming of Karl Malone LY, but the Blue Devils didn’t make the Final Four- they lacked outside shooters.

11) Here is where LY’ Final Four teams ranked in minutes continuity:

Everyone does things differently; for me personally, have to watch a ton of games and get a feel for which teams are developing chemistry as the season goes on.

10) World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg just completed the third year of a 7-year, $175M contract extension he signed in May ’16; Saturday he opted out of the last four years of that deal, leaving $100M on the table, wagering that some other team will make him a better offer, or maybe Washington will pony up more money. Time will tell.

9) Florida State fired football coach Willie Taggart Sunday, giving him $17M to take a hike. Seminoles were 9-12 (6-9 ACC) through Taggart’s 21 games as coach- not a lot of big money guys get the boot after only two years or less with a team.

8) Why some teams don’t win that much: In the 2012 NFL Draft, Jacksonville Jaguars took a punter in the 3rd round; that guy (Bryan Anger) is still in the NFL, punting for Houston, but another guy taken in the 3rd round is also still in the league.

Five picks after the Jaguars took Anger, Seattle drafted a guy you may have heard of, a QB from Wisconsin. A guy named Russell Wilson.

7) Dallas Mavericks’ star Luke Doncic is the first player since Oscar Robertson (1965) to score 25+ points, dish out 15+ assists, and grab 10+ rebounds in back-to-back games.

6) From ESPN research: Through eight games, the Baltimore Ravens are averaging 222.1 passing yards per game and 204.9 rush yards per game. No team in NFL history has averaged 200+ passing ypg and 200+ rushing ypg for an entire season.

5) Case Keenum has earned roughly $36M in his NFL career; he’s playing for his 4th team in four years. His career W-L record is 27-34; even when he led Minnesota to a 13-3 record two years ago, the Vikings dumped him for Kirk Cousins.

Interesting career; he threw for 19,217 yards and 155 TD’s in college at Houston. Keenum is another guy who could write a hell of a book.

4) Steelers were fined $75,000, coach Mike Tomlin fined $25,000 for violating the NFL Injury Report Policy by not accurately listing QB Ben Roethlisberger on the practice report prior to the team’s Week 2 game against the Seahawks.

I agree with these fines, seeing how I picked Pittsburgh in that game. ��

3) Kentucky is the school with the most players on NBA opening-night rosters (28) for the 8th straight year. Duke (23 players) and North Carolina (14) are next on the list.

2) NBA rosters have 108 international players from 38 different countries. 42% of all NBA players also played in the G-League.

1) Alabama is favored at home by 6.5 points over LSU Saturday; this is the fewest points the Crimson Tide has been favored by at home since November 2011, when 5.5-point favorite Alabama lost 9-6, also against LSU.

Boston Uncommon

The Boston Bruins have fired out of the game with an 11-1-2 record, which means they have dropped just one game in regulation. The only team which beat the B's in regulation was the Colorado Avalanche back on Oct. 10 in Denver. The only other setbacks were back-to-back games Oct. 17-19 in a shootout loss against Tampa Bay in Beantown, and a 4-3 overtime loss in Toronto. The Bruins have rolled up six consecutive victories since that setback to the Maple Leafs, and they are working on a streak of 10 straight games with three or more goals since that lone regulation loss. The B's rank ninth in the NHL with 3.4 goals per game, and they possess the No. 1 power play in the NHL at 31.0 percent. The defense is also No. 1 in the league with just 2.0 goals per game allowed, and they're a respectable 83.8 percent on the penalty kill.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Nov. 5

Ottawa at N.Y. Islanders: The Islanders head into Tuesday's game as steep favorites, looking for their 10th consecutive victory. They have won nine in a row dating back to their last setback on Oct. 11 in Carolina (a game I attended, oddly enough), and the streak includes a 4-2 road win against the Senators. In that matchup we saw a goaltender duel between Thomas Greiss and Anders Nilsson. In this installment we're expected to see Craig Anderson against Semyon Varlamov. While Varlamov might technically be considered the backup for the Isles, he has a sparkling 5-2-0 record, 2.14 goals-against average and .929 save percentage.

Colorado at Dallas: The Avalanche fired out of the gates with a 7-0-1 record to start the season, including that aforementioned victory against the Bruins. The defending champs, the St. Louis Blues, topped them on Oct. 21, and that kicked off a 1-4-1 stretch which also included a 2-1 loss at home against the Stars in a goaltender battle between Phillip Grubauer and Anton Khudobin. Grubauer is expected to man the crease again, facing Ben Bishop this time. Grubauer is 6-2-2 with a 2.68 GAA and .918 save percentage, and he allowed just two goals on 31 shots in that meetings with Dallas last time out. He has allowed three or more goals in just two of his 10 appearances this season.

St. Louis at Vancouver: Speaking of the defending champs, they have won six of the past seven after an 0-2-2 run. These two teams met on Oct. 17 in St. Louis, with the Canucks coming away with a 4-3 win in a shootout, as Thatcher Demko bested Jordan Binnington. For the Canucks, the 'over' has cashed in five of the past six games, and they have posted five or more goals in six of the past seven. Overall the Canucks are scoring 3.8 goals per game to rank fifth, and they're fourth in the NHL with only 2.4 goals per game allowed, and they're fourth on the penalty kill, too, at 86.4 percent.

Wednesday, Nov. 6

Detroit at N.Y. Rangers: We get an Original Six matchup on Hump Day, one of just two games in the league. The Rangers are looking to pick themselves up and dust themselves off after a 6-2 thrashing from the normally light-scoring Senators. The Red Wings, who have been getting tuned up pretty frequently, were dumped by the Predators at Little Caesars Arena on Monday by a 6-1 count, as the Preds exacted a little revenge for an Opening Night loss to the Wings. That might have been the pinnacle of the season for the Red Wings, as they're 1-10-1 across the past 12 games. In 2018-19, the Rangers lost each possible way to the Red Wings, all by a 3-2 score. In three meetings, the Red Wings won in regulation, a shootout and overtime.

Thursday, Nov. 7

Vegas at Toronto: The Golden Knights and Maple Leafs square off at Scotiabank Arena, and the Leafs look to maintain their dominance in this series. The teams have met four times in the past, with Toronto winning three of the first four matchups. The 'over' has also cashed in three of the four battles, although the only under connected in last season's meeting in Ontario, a 3-1 win by the Leafs. Toronto has scored three or more goals in each meetings with Vegas, averaging 4.0 GPG, while allowing 3.3 GPG.

Nashville at Colorado: The Predators and Avalanche tangle at Pepsi Center in Denver. It will be the first meeting this season between these Western Conference powers. This series has been dominated by the Predators in recent seasons. Last year, these teams split the season series 2-2, with the road team winning all four meetings and the 'under' cashing in each outing. However, Nashville has won 12 of the past 14 regular-season meetings overall against Colorado, while winning eight straight meetings in Denver dating back to Jan. 8, 2016. Before the 4-0 'under' run last season, the 'over' was 10-1 in previous 11 meetings, too.

Minnesota at San Jose: The Wild and Sharks have been at the bottom of the Western Conference standings this season, which is a change for both of these organizations. They'll meet at SAP Center in San Jose, and someone will get two points. The last two seasons have resulted in season sweeps. San Jose swept the season series in 2018-19, outscoring Minnesota 11-3. The season before, the Wild swept the season series. While the total is 5-5-1 in the past 11 meetings in this series, the 'over' has connected in the past five meetings in San Jose dating back to Dec. 12, 2015.

13) Duke 68, Kansas 66— Jayhawks turned ball over 28 times in a game they led by 9 with 14:35 left. Kansas played only six guys more than 8:00; they took only nine 3’s (4-9) and were only 16-26 on the line.

12) Kentucky 69, Michigan State 62— Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points off the bench for Kentucky, sealing things with a 3-point jumper with 1:00 left. Wildcats are a very good defensive team.

11) Saint Mary’s 65, Wisconsin 63 OT— On Selection Sunday, this score is going to resonate with the Selection Committee; a huge win for the Gaels, who last year played non-conference schedule #183. Now they have a win over a pretty good Big 14 team.

10) Georgia Tech 82, NC State 81 OT— Wolfpack blew a 15-point first half lead; Tech shot 60% inside the arc, and is now tied atop the ACC standings.

ACC played actual conference games tonight, probably to help promote the new ACC Network; awful early to play important games.

6) Its funny, I like college basketball better than NBA, but one of the big keys to handicapping college ball is figuring out as soon as possible which college players are going to be high draft picks in the NBA, because those guys will be winning lot of games this winter.

College basketball moved the 3-point arc back this season; I’m eager to find out early results on 3-point shooting with the arc farther from the basket this year; how will it change the game, if it does at all? Will report the news when I find out.

5) Morehead State 90, Samford 86, 2OT— Samford led by 11 early on, but couldn’t hold it in another brickfest— teams combined to make 12-55 behind the arc. Jordan Walker was 4-14 on the arc; the other Morehead players were 2-15 on the arc.

4) Utah State 81, Montana State 73— Kid named Harald Frey drained 34 points in a losing cause for the Bobcats, who were outscored 35-16 on the foul line. Utah State was 35-45, Montana State 16-26 at the charity stripe. But if you took Montana State +21, Harald Frey was your guy.

3) Cal-Riverside 66, Nebraska 47— Fred Hoiberg’s debut in Lincoln was a disaster, losing to a Riverside squad that hasn’t even won half its Big West games since 2009. Riverside made 12-25 on the arc and didn’t have to sweat the outcome at the end. Biggest D-I win in Riverside history.

2) In the NBA, Atlanta Hawks’ big man John Collins was suspended without pay for 25 games Tuesday for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program- he tested positive for a PED. Collins played 32.2 mpg in the Hawks’ first five games, scoring 17 ppg. Big loss.

1) Keys to watching college games before Thanksgiving:
— Don’t overreact to scores. Some teams are way ahead of others.
— Lot of these games are played for TV purposes; coaches are experimenting a lot of times, getting ready for conference play.
— Some coaches are better at recruiting, others are better at player development; the coaches who develop players better (Oregon, for one) will have teams that thrive later in the season.
