Zibanejad trick helps Rangers past Sens
        October 5, 2019
        By The Associated Press

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Mika Zibanejad had his third career hat trick and added an assist to help the New York Rangers beat the Ottawa Senators 4-1 on Saturday night.

Zibanejad, who was drafted sixth overall by the Senators in 2011, is only the second player in Rangers history to record eight points in the first two games of the season. On Thursday night, he had a goal and three assists in New York's 6-4 home victory over Winnipeg.

Artemi Panarin also scored for the Rangers, and Alexandar Georgiev stopped 31 shots.

Brady Tkachuk scored for the Senators, and Craig Anderson made 26 saves.

Zibanejad opened the scoring on a power-play at 6:04 of the first period, and Tkachuk tied it midway through the period.

Zibanejad broke the tie at 9:53 of the second and made it 3-1 with a short-handed goal at 12:07. Zibanejad then set up Panarin's power-play goal early in the third.

CANADIENS 6, MAPLE LEAFS 5, SO

TORONTO (AP) - Paul Byron scored in a shootout and Montreal overcame a three-goal deficit to beat Toronto.

Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares all failed to beat Carey Price in the shootout.

Brendan Gallagher had a goal and two assists for Montreal, and Phillip Danault and Max Domi each had a goal and an assist each. Jeff Petry scored on a penalty shot, Jonathan Drouin also scored, and Price made 32 saves.

Matthews scored twice for Toronto - his fourth and fifth goals of the season - and Alexander Kerfoot had a goal and two assists for his first three points with Toronto. Trevor Moore added a goal and an assist, William Nylander scored, and Michael Hutchinson stopped 37 shots.

Nylander made it 4-1 at 5:16 of the third period on a power play, but Montreal scored 11 seconds later when Drouin's pass in front went in off Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly.

Gallagher made it 4-3 at 6:29 after an icing, banging home a rebound. Kerfoot took an interference penalty with under nine minutes left in regulation that Toronto came close to killing off, but Leafs winger Kasperi Kapanen inexplicably threw his broken stick at Petry after blocking a shot when the Canadiens defenseman had the puck at the point. Petry was awarded a penalty shot as a result, and he beat Hutchinson glove-side to tie it at 13:02. Danault put Montreal ahead by banging a rebound home with 4:40 left, and Matthews tied it 1:15 to go and Hutchinson on the bench for an extra attacker.

        BLUES 3, STARS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Sammy Blais had a goal and an assist in St. Louis' victory over Dallas.

        PENGUINS 7, BLUE JACKETS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jared McCann and Patric Hornqvist each scored twice and Pittsburgh had a five-goal second period to overwhelm Columbus.

Penguins star Evgeni Malkin left in the second period and did not return with an undisclosed injury. He ran into teammate Kris Letang near center ice and fell awkwardly into the boards.

McCann tied a career high with three points. Letang had a power-play goal, Teddy Blueger and Marcus Pettersson also scored, and Matt Murray made 28 saves. Gustav Nyquist and Zach Werenski scored for the Blue Jackets.

James Reimer stopped 33 shots in his first career start for the Hurricanes. Carolina also killed a 4-on-3 power play in overtime after Jordan Staal was called for hooking Nicklas Backstrom.

T.J. Oshie and Garnet Hathaway scored for Washington.

        SABRES 7, DEVILS 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Rookie Victor Olofsson and Sam Reinhart each scored twice and Buffalo kicked off the home-opening portion of its 50th anniversary season with the romp over New Jersey.

With Gilbert Perreault and other former stars on hand, the Sabres had a sold-out house in a full-throated roar from the pregame ceremony, through a three-goal second period and once more when Reinhart capped the rout with a breakaway goal with 3:44 remaining.

The Sabres, under new coach Ralph Krueger, built off the momentum of a 3-1 season-opening win at Pittsburgh by getting off to their first 2-0 start since the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season. Jack Eichel, Jeff Skinner and Kyle Okposo also scored, and Carter Hutton stopped 18 shots. Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac scored for New Jersey.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Mike Hoffman had his second career hat trick to help Florida beat Tampa Bay to split an opening home-and-home series.

Noel Acciari also scored goal and Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves for his first victory with the Panthers. Joel Quenneville also won for first time as coach of the Panthers. Steven Stamkos, Mathieu Joseph and Gemel Smith scored for the Lightning.

The Bruins opened defense of their Eastern Conference title with a 2-1 victory over Dallas on Thursday night behind Tuukka Rask's 28 saves. Boston turned to Halak for Game 2 and the veteran was sharp against Arizona, turning away one quality shot after another for his 48th career shutout.

Darcy Kuemper stopped 23 shots for the Coyotes, who have not beaten the Bruins since 2010 in Prague.

        AVALANCHE 4, WILD 2

            Quote of the Day
“This is a results-based business. When you take these (GM) positions and certainly the position I’m in, you have to have thick skin and be prepared for the criticism that, quite frankly, a lot of times it’s accurate……the wins aren’t there right now, which is not acceptable. But at the same time I do see some good things going on and I am glad we made some of the decisions we made this offseason.”

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday…….

            13) Virginia Tech 42, Miami 35— Hokies led 28-0 when Miami scored a 44-yard TD on the last play of the first half; Hurricanes tied game 35-all when they scored a TD with 3:16 left in the game, but missed the go-ahead PAT.

Tech then drove 63 yards on five plays for a TD and their first ACC win in three tries.

Miami is 1-3 vs I-A teams, with all four games decided by 7 or fewer points.

            12) Navy 34, Air Force 25— Trends are fun and all, but under is now 33-9-1 in the last 43 games between the service academies. This game went over by a decent amount.

            11) Speaking of the academies, Army (23-1) scored the first TD of the day, so if you bet them to score the day’s first TD, a prop bet at the SouthPoint, your day started out very well.

            10) Texas (-11) 42, West Virginia 31— Mountaineers scored with 0:48 left, pushing the spread; over last 11 years, Texas is now 0-10-1 ATS the week before playing Oklahoma.

This game was closer than the score indicates; WVU outgained the Longhorns 463-407, but they were only 4-14 on 3rd down, Texas was 10-18— Mountaineers turned ball over four times (-3).

            9) Florida 24, Auburn 13— Rough day for Auburn’s freshman QB Nix, who was 11-27/145 passing with three INT’s. Florida kept the Tigers in the game by losing five fumbles (-2 in TO’s). Gators outgained Auburn 382-241, teams combined to convert only 6-29 on third down.

            8) Iowa State 49, TCU 24— Cyclones have covered their last eight October games.

            7) Upsets:
            — Virginia Tech (+14) 42, Miami 35
            — Texas Tech (+10) 45, Oklahoma State 35
            — Georgia State (+7) 52, Arkansas State 38
            — Central Michigan (+6) 42, Eastern Michigan 16
            — Oregon State (+6) 48, UCLA 31
            — Ball State (+5) 27, Northern Illinois 20

            6) SMU 43, Tulsa 37 OT— Mustangs were down 30-9 after the 3rd quarter, but won in OT after tying the game with 1:02 left in regulation. Rough night for Tulsa’s kicker, who missed three FG’s and an extra point.

            5) Louisville 41, Boston College 39— Total yardage was 664-563, Louisville; they kicked a 41-yard FG with 1:13 left for the win. BC QB Grosel completed only 9-24 passes, but threw three TD’s. Eagles lost three of their last four games— they lost last two by total of five points.

            4) Arizona 35, Colorado 30— Total yardage was 496-487 Colorado, but they kicked three FG’s and scored three TD’s, while Arizona scored five TD’s.

Not sure why Colorado fired Mike MacIntyre as coach LY, but they did; I’m thinking they made a mistake, but thats their business, not mine.

            3) Oregon State 48, UCLA 31— Beavers led this game 21-0 after 6:01 of play; UCLA is now 1-4, and they trailed 49-17 in the one game they won.

            2) Cincinnati 27, UCF 24— Knights turned ball over four times (-3); Gabriel was 25-46/297 passing but threw three INT’s- Davis caught 13 balls for 170 yards for UCF, in a losing cause.

            1) There are a few teams that are so terrible you should never even think about wagering on them; UMass, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, UNLV.

Texier scores in OT, Blue Jackets beat Sabres 4-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Rookie Alexandre Texier scored 2:08 into overtime to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

Texier beat Linus Ullmark from the right circle off a quick pass from Nick Foligno to give the Blue Jackets their first win of the season.

Victor Olofsson scored for the Sabres, who had pulled the goalie on the power play to create a 6-on-4 advantage, with 1:14 left in the game to tie the score and force the extra period.

Foligno, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Cam Atkinson also scored for the Blue Jackets, who had dropped their first two games of the season by a combined 10-3 score. They outshot Buffalo 44-18.

Joonas Korpisalo had 15 saves for Columbus.

Marcus Johansson and Jeff Skinner also scored for Buffalo and Ullmark, making his first start of the season, had 40 saves.

Bjorkstrand, playing in his 200th NHL game, got his first goal of the season with 1:51 left in the first when he grabbed a carom off the back boards and shot from a sharp angle, bouncing the puck in off Ullmark's back.

The Blue Jackets struck again quickly when Atkinson - just 9 seconds into a power play - scored from the bottom of the right circle off a sharp behind-the-net feed from Alexander Wennberg.

Early in the second period, it was Buffalo's turn to capitalize on a power play. Johansson, signed as an unrestricted free agent in the summer, got his first goal with the Sabres on a one-timer from the right circle to cut Columbus' lead to 2-1.

Skinner tied the score for Buffalo later in the second when he picked Ryan Murray's pocket in the defensive zone on the Blue Jackets' transition and rifled a shot past Korpisalo from 30 feet.

Foligno batted in a bouncing puck amid heavy traffic to give Columbus the lead again on a power play 6:46 into the third.

NOTES: Columbus F Sonny Milano replaced Josh Anderson, who was injured Saturday in a 7-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. ... Blue Jackets D Markus Nutivaara replaced Dean Kukan after being a healthy scratch Saturday. ... Columbus rookie F Emil Bemstrom got his first NHL point with an assist on Foligno's goal.

Pietrangelo scores tiebreaker, Blues beat Maple Leafs 3-2
                            October 7, 2019

TORONTO (AP) Alex Pietrangelo scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

Oskar Sundqvist and Brayden Schenn also scored for the defending champions, who have earned points in their first three games this season (2-0-1). Jordan Binnington stopped 32 shots.

Frederik Gauthier and William Nylander scored for Toronto, which has dropped two straight (2-1-1). Frederik Andersen finished with 26 saves.

The Blues scored the decisive goal at 7:51 of the third when David Perron found a pinching Pietrangelo, who beat a down-and-out Andersen from a tight angle at the bottom of the faceoff circle for his second of the season. Pietrangelo also earned his 400th career point and 23rd game-winner to break a tie with Al MacInnis for the most by a defenseman in franchise history.

St. Louis had a chance to add to its lead when Toronto defenseman Jake Muzzin went off for slashing with 4:57 left, but the a(;e Leafs had the best chance when Binnington robbed Ilya Mikheyev with his right pad off the rush.

Toronto pressed with Andersen on the bench for the extra skater, but couldn't find a way past Binnington and the Blues' stout, battle-tested defense.

The Blues opened the scoring at 8:30 of the second when Sundqvist - the Blues' fourth-line center - moved in on Andersen and fired a slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle.

The Maple Leafs tied it when Jason Spezza batted a puck out of the air to Gauthier, who banged in his second of the season with 8:26 left.

Fans at Scotiabank barely had a chance to sit back down when they were on their feet again 24 seconds later when Nylander finished off a beautiful passing play with Cody Ceci and Andreas Johnsson for his second.

St. Louis, which went from last in the overall standings in January to winning the franchise's first Stanley Cup in June, pushed back late in the period and tied it with 47.3 seconds left on the clock when Schenn beat Andersen between the pads after Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly turned the puck over.

Binningtong was helped out by two posts in a busy first period.

Toronto center Alexander Kerfoot hit the post just two minutes in after moving in alone on Binnington. Andersen snapped his glove out at the other end to deny Schenn after the Maple Leafs were caught running around in the defensive zone for an extended period.

Auston Matthews, who had five goals in three games to open the season, then rang another shot off the post behind Binnington on a Toronto power play before Nylander couldn't quite control a loose puck with the St. Louis goalie down and out.

NOTES: Last season, Nylander didn't get his second goal until his 24th game following a long contract impasse that dragged into December. ... Spezza was a healthy scratch for two of Toronto's first three games. He suited up at home for the first time and registered his first point with the Maple Leafs after signing for the league minimum in free agency on July 1. .. Binnington, a native of nearby Richmond Hill, Ontario, made his first-ever start at Scotiabank Arena after not grabbing the No. 1 job in St. Louis until early January last season. The 26-year-old did beat Toronto 3-2 in overtime at Enterprise Center on Feb. 19.

“I thought he represented himself well. He gave us a chance. Gotta tip your cap to him. You’re talking about a guy who didn’t make our opening 53 and all of his things, we know his story. But you also got to acknowledge that he’s done some good things at every step along the way through the team developing process when given an opportunity and that’s why he’s in the position that he’s in and that’s probably why he made the positive showing as positive as he did today.”
Mike Tomlin, talking about his new QB, Devlin Hodges

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                                13) 49ers 31, Browns 3— Monday at the Mirage Casino here in Las Vegas, someone wagered $120K to win $52K on the 49ers’ money line in this game. Good night for that guy.

                                — Mayfield completed 8-22 passes for 100 yards; a WR did drop an easy TD that turned into an INT when game was 14-3, but still, he had a miserable night.
                                — Total yardage was 446-180; luckily for TV networks, only one more primetime game for the overrated Browns.

                                12) Patrick Mahomes tweaked his ankle Sunday night when one of his own linemen stepped on the ankle while he was pass blocking.

Colts’ defense blitzed on 41.9% of Kansas City’s dropbacks, and they were effective.

                                11) Redskins fired coach Jay Gruden early Monday morning, which won’t help anything; he was 35-49-1 in Washington, with one playoff appearance.

Washington’ problem is that their owner is horrendous and he meddles; here are the Redskins’ head coaches since Daniel Snyder bought the ball club in 1999:

                                1994-2000: Norv Turner 50-60-1
                                2001: Marty Schottenheimer 8-8
                                2002-03: Steve Spurrier 12-20
                                2004-07: Joe Gibbs 31-36
                                2008-09: Jm Zorn 12-20
                                2010-13: Mike Shanahan 24-41
                                2014-19: Jay Gruden 35-49-1

Bill Callahan is the Redskins’ interim coach; he also replaced Jon Gruden as the Raiders’ coach when Gruden jumped to the Buccaneers.

                                10) Steelers kicked off to start overtime Sunday, which is very unusual, since a TD on the first possession ends the game. Ravens punted on their first drive, so it didn’t come into play, and Mike Tomlin was celebrating like they won the game when Baltimore punted, but Steelers fumbled and lost the game anyway.

Will be interesting to see how the Pittsburgh media deals with Tomlin if he has his first losing season as a head coach- they’re 1-4 right now, with the 3rd-string QB starting for a while.

                                9) Oregon State executed a drop kick/onside kick against UCLA Saturday; was pretty cool to see, and it worked like a charm. Beavers led 21-0 before first quarter was half over.

                                8) With Devlin Hodges expected to start at QB for the Steelers in LA Sunday, Paxton Lynch, a former 1st round draft pick of the Broncos, is going to be Hodges’ backup.

                                7) Quote of the Day, part II:
                                “I (bleep)ing love this!!!!”
Younger guy sitting in front of me the other night in the Aria sportsbook; he was just sitting there taking in all the action, when a couple of his bets won, he started yelling. Good stuff.

                                6) Blue Ribbon Basketball’s preseason top 6 teams:
Michigan State, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, Florida, Louisville

                                5) Tampa Bay 10, Astros 3— Rays drew 32,251 for a 1:00 playoff game, and the TV guys were raving about what a great crowd it was. These teams play Game 4 at 4;30 tomorrow, will be interesting to see what they draw for that game.

                                4) Cardinals 5, Braves 4 (10)— Molina tied game with an 8th inning single, then won it with a sac fly in the 10th. Decisive Game 5 is Wednesday in Atlanta.

                                3) Tennessee Titans cut kicker Cairo Santos Monday, after he went 0-4 on field goals in their ugly 14-7 home loss to Buffalo Sunday; they’re expected to sign former Bears’ K Cody Parkey to replace Santos.

                                2) Kansas Jayhawks fired their offensive coordinator Sunday after only six games; you wonder what thats all about. The new OC has a small-college background- the NAIA team he coached LY averaged 55 ppg and 540.3 yards/game.

Jayhawks rank 101st nationally in scoring, 102nd in yards gained, 104th in passing and 116th in first downs per game.

Remember that college assistant coaches are equal parts tacticians/recruiters; players win games, and Kansas is obviously behind its Big X opponents in talent level.

                                1) Michael D. Smith posted this on Twitter Sunday:
