13) Cowboys 13, Saints 10— You think handicapping is bleeping easy? Try this score on for size; Dallas didn’t score in the second half, but pulled a very big upset, their 4th win in a row.

Dallas had six defensive/special teams penalties, in the third quarter alone. Their defense played their hearts out, just a great game. New Orleans was averaging 37 points a game, and then this happened.

As 13-10 games go, this one was fascinating.

12) Some other stuff about this game:
— Saints had 59 total yards in first half, their least since 2002.
— Saints didn’t score in first half for first time in their last 72 games.
— For the game, Saints ran only 49 plays for 176 yards.
— New Orleans had scored 30+ points in eight of its last nine games. Go figure.

11) NFL used to have two different facemark penalties, 5-yard and 15-yard penalties for degree of the foul. Wish they would go back to that; someone just touching the facemask shouldn’t merit a 15-yard penalty.

10) An enterprising human wagered $36,000 on the Toronto Raptors Thursday, to beat Golden State— if the Raptors won, the guy banked $9,000.

Today is November 30; if you told me back on September 30 that someone would wager $36K on the Warriors to lose a basketball game, I’d tell that person to get a psych evaluation, but in the world of sports, things change quickly.

Toronto won in OT; to paraphrase a Latin proverb, “Fortune favors the bold”

9) Things you learn when you watch too much TV:

One of several hundred reasons why I’m no longer married: If you buy the Mrs a Jaguar SUV for Christmas, she’ll smile and be happy. Who knew? Never tried that one.

8) Mets hired Chili Davis as their new hitting coach; this will be the third different job in three years for Davis, his 4th in last six years. Mets have had three batting coaches the last three years, and five in last six years.

Davis had really good success in Oakland when Yoenis Cespedes was there, so……..

7) Boston Red Sox doled out 66 full World Series, worth $416,837.72 each, to players, coaches staff from this past season. Players vote on who gets full/partial/no playoff shares.

The minimum salary in the major leagues is $545,000, so for rookies and also coaches, this is significant money.

6) Texas Tech hired Utah State coach Matt Wells to run its football program; Wells went 44-34 at Utah State (his alma mater) including a 10-2 record so far this year. He is bringing both his coordinators with him from Utah State.

5) There are 353 Division I college basketball teams; 33 of those teams are being coached this season by a person who has never coached a Division I team before.

According to college hoop expert Ken Pomeroy, rookie coaches went 331-478 LY, 412-602 the year before, are 77-127 so far this year, with 27 of those wins vs non-D-I teams. You didn’t get hired as a rookie coach because the last coach did well.

4) I complained about ESPN’s Jay Bilas during the Maui Classic, but he sounds like Vin Scully compared to Dan Dakich, one of the most annoying people to ever speak into a microphone.

Dakich played/coached at Indiana, was a mediocre head coach at Bowling Green for 10 years, and now comes across like a freakin’ know-it-all on TV a few days a week. Maybe he’s a terrific guy off camera, but no voice makes me reach for the mute button faster than Dakich’s.

3) Chargers’ offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will interview for the coaching job at his alma mater Georgia Tech, after Paul Johnson retired earlier this week.

2) Clippers 133, Kings 121— Sacramento had 68 points at halftime……and was behind. This was a fun game to watch. Clippers are an actual team, with no one big star- they’ve won 11 of their last 13 games.

1) One of my favorite players to watch in the NBA is Montrezl Harrell, who in his 4th season in the NBA, is averaging 15.9 ppg for the first-place Clippers.

Why do I like watching him play? Because he works really hard; he scored 5.7 ppg as a freshman at Louisville, improved to where scored 15.7 ppg as a junior. You see guys progress to become an outstanding player, and you know the work thats gone into it behind the scenes.
