7) How does Joe Girardi not have a managing job in the major leagues?

11 years experience, a record of 988-794, albeit only 28-24 in playoffs with Bronx Bombers. His one losing season was in 2006 with the 78-84 Marlins, who went 71-91 the year after he left.

The most fascinating part of modern baseball is the internal tug-of-war between analytics people and old-school baseball people— who/where are the decisions made? Interesting stuff.

6) College basketball starts Tuesday night; research is in full swing.

Last year, the Penn Quakers won the Ivy League tournament and got a 16-seed in the NCAA tournament, the Ivy League’s first 16-seed since 1989. Ivy teams had been on an upswing, but when upsets happen in the conference tournament, you get lower seeds in the NCAA’s.

5) Tom Crean is the new basketball coach at Georgia, which is a tough place to win; in the last 25 years, Tubby Smith, Jim Harrick, Mark Fox among others have swung, mostly missed trying to make the Dawgs winners at a school that is football-centric- they drew 80,000 fans for the spring football game.

Crean is a good coach; when he was at Marquette, his first booster meeting drew 17 people, not a good start, but then he recruited Dwyane Wade and wound up in the Final Four.

Georgia hasn’t won an NCAA tournament game since 1996; this will be fun to follow.

4) Kentucky spent $19,180,059 on men’s basketball in the latest fiscal year; Georgia spent $6,237,492, so you get the idea of the scope of Crean’s job.

3) Mid-American Conference (MAC) hasn’t had an at-large team in NCAA’s since 1999, but this could be the year; league is expected to be stronger than it has been in years.

CATCHING LIGHTNING

The Bolts head into Montreal and look to continue their recent success against the Canadiens in this divisional show down. Tampa Bay is 8-3 in their last 11 road games and have a 4-1 mark in their last five games against the Canadiens and with one of the league’s deepest rosters they should be considered a favourite in every game they play in. The Lightning are 5-0 following a home loss of three or more goals while the Canadiens are 2-9 in their last 11 games following a win. The Lightning have dominated this series and while Montreal has played well this season they’ll get dealt a dose of reality on Saturday.

SHINING STARS

The Stars look to continue their early season success but face a tough test here against the defending Cup champions. However, the Stars are 6-1 in their last seven games in Washington and are 20-7-1 in their last 28 overall in this series and are getting great value as a road dog on Saturday. The Stars are 6-1 in their last seven after scoring two or fewer in previous game and while the Capitals have had a ton of success at home over the last few seasons this isn’t a great spot for them. The Stars are huge dogs and are worthy of a play on Saturday night.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Islanders have struggled offensively this season with John Tavares departing to the Maple Leafs but they have found a new identity and are winning low scoring games with team defense. New York is averaging a shockingly low 25.7 shots per game this season and don’t get many quality scoring chances and on Saturday they are playing a Devils who ranks seventh in goals allowed. New York currently ranks fourth in the NHL in goals against so far and aside from Taylor Hall the Devils don’t have a ton of offensive weapons to work with. Take this into consideration on Saturday as the Under looks like a solid play.

EXTRA ATTACKERS

One of the most intriguing matchups on Saturday is in Sin City as the Vegas Golden Knights host the Carolina Hurricanes that features a contrast of special team’s weaknesses. The Golden Knights have been dreadful in the power play so far this season as they are currently 27th in the league on the man advantage. The Hurricanes meanwhile can’t keep the puck out of the net when they are in the penalty box as they have the league’s worst penalty kill. Something has got to give on Saturday and history shows it will be Carolina’s penalty kill coming back to life as they are historically bad right now. The Hurricanes are worth a look in a spot where they are the better team even strength and the Knights can’t score on the power play.

GOALIE PROFILE - DEVAN DUBNYK, MINNESOTA WILD

Dubnyk will look to give the Wild a road victory against the Blues and if his early season success is any indication he could very well win this one on his own. The former Oilers and Coyotes netminder is 5-2-2 with a 2.19 GAA and .937 save percentage and if he continues this pace he will be among the finalists for the Vezina at season’s end. The Wild struggle to score goals as they are 22nd in the league in goals for and if they’re going to find a way to win on the road against the Blues it will be on the shoulders of Dubnyk. Look into the Under in this Central division meeting on Saturday.

INJURY UPDATE

The Maple Leafs were dealt a serious blow last weekend after losing Auston Matthews as the dynamic goal scorer will be out for the foreseeable future. The Leafs have a ton of depth up top but their heartbeat seems to move with Matthews despite the presence of John Tavares. And without him in the lineup the Leafs may not be the safe bet they were heading into last weekend. Toronto has a tough show down in Pittsburgh and while they may be a popular choice as a road underdog you should reconsider them until someone else steps up as a threat.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

The Devils are 1-8 in last nine meetings in New York against the Islanders. New Jersey is a trendy pick on Saturday but be weary of their history at the Barclay’s Center.
The Oilers are a concerning 8-21 in their last 29 meetings against the Red Wings and are 10-27 in last 37 in Detroit. Edmonton is playing well but consider these trends when backing them in the Motor City.
The Under is 15-5-2 in the last 22 meetings between the Sabres and Senators. Neither team has looked good offensively this season and this trend figures to continue Saturday.
