    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six interesting college football games this weekend:

    — Miami (-6) @ Virginia

    — Texas A&M (-2) @ South Carolina

    — Colorado @ USC (-7.5)

    — Washington (-3.5) @ Oregon

    — Wisconsin @ Michigan (-7.5)

    — West Virginia (-6.5) @ Iowa State

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) If you like the NFL and you’re in Las Vegas, a Sunday afternoon in the theater at the Westgate Casino is something you have to do.

1,500 seats, all the games are on, there are betting windows in the back, a concession stand on the left, and it is surprisingly quiet— everyone has always been cool when I’ve been there.

    12) Saints 43, Redskins 19— New Orleans’ first four drives Monday night: 30 plays, 276 yards, four TD’s, two missed PAT’s. Last of the four TD’s was a 62-yard pass that put Drew Brees on top of the all-time passing yardage list.

There was a brief ceremony after the record-setting play; Saints actually got penalized 15 yards for excessive celebration.

    11) Oklahoma lost 48-45 to Texas Saturday, so of course a coach had to get fired; DC Mike Stoops was told to take a hike. Ruffin McNeill, former HC of East Carolina, will be the new DC, which ain’t going to help a damn thing. Recruit more good defensive players!!!!

    10) Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa has thrown 18 TD passes this season, and only 25 incomplete passes. Bama’s backup QB has a 26-2 record as the starter.

    9) Boston 16, New York 1— Brock Holt is the first baseball player ever to hit for the cycle in a playoff game; how weird is that?

David Price sucks in the postseason, and he doesn’t pitch well against New York; Red Sox still owe Price $127M over the next four seasons, but when you’re a fat-cat team, you can afford miscues like this, and just spend more money to overcome them.

    9) AFC North is only division in NFL where all the team are .500 or better.

    8) If you think your favorite team is screwed up, be thankful you don’t root for the Phoenix Suns, who fired GM Ryan McDonough Monday, eight days before the season starts.

Last year, the Suns fired coach Earl Watson AFTER THREE GAMES. Oy.

    7) Looks weird seeing Lebron James wearing a Lakers’ jersey; Lakers-Warriors play here in Las Vegas tomorrow night at T-Mobile Center.

    6) Spurs’ PG Dejounte Murray tore his ACL Sunday night; he was expected to be the Spurs’ PG this season, replacing the departed Tony Parker.

    5) 49ers ran 92 plays in their loss to Arizona Sunday; Cardinals ran only 49, but when you’re minus-5 in turnovers, not else matters too much. Still, 92 plays is a hell of a lot for an NFL game.

    4) You see Cleveland 12, Baltimore 9 and you think it was an ugly game, but yardage was actually 416-410, Browns, so both teams moved the ball well enough, they were just useless in the red zone, scoring 18 points on six drives.

    3) Over $50M of the Buffalo Bills’ payroll this year is going to players who aren’t on the team.

    2) FOX TV analyst Chris Spielman said Sunday that he considers Aaron Rodgers to be the best QB ever. Pretty strong statement.

    1) According to the 2010 US Census, Los Angeles County has more people than these 12 states combined:

    Alaska, Delaware, Hawai’i, Idaho
Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Dakota
Rhode Island, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming

This week's NHL betting predictions and picks: Stanley Cup rematch

We're treated to a Stanley Cup rematch Wednesday night when the Golden Knights travel to Washington to take on the Capitals. We cover this game and much more in our NHL betting cheat sheet with need-to-know betting notes, goalie profiles and injury news to help you crack the NHL odds for the early week matchups.

            Original Six Showdown

The Detroit Red Wings get their first look at the Toronto Maple Leafs with John Tavares donning the blue-and-white, and at the scoring pace he is on right now he will be a prime target for the Wings defense to key in on. The problem though is that the Leafs have one of the best offenses in the NHL with the likes of Auston Matthews, Nazem Kadri, and Mitch Marner to burden the load and against a modest Red Wings defense this could end up being a blow out. Add in the fact that Toronto has a Tuesday night date with the Dallas Stars, which will be a big test for them regardless of the result, and their meeting with Detroit will allow them to blow off some steam.

            Stanley Cup Rematch

The Las Vegas Golden Knights get their first shot at revenge Wednesday night as they take on the Washington Capitals in a Stanley Cup rematch, but they could be in a ton of trouble with the Penguins on deck the night after. The Knights will need a fast start to take the Capitals crowd out of the game and as the eighth ranked first period team from a season ago they are more than capable of doing so. However, the Caps were the ninth best first period team last year and are tops in that category so far this season, which will give the Verizon Center crowd plenty of action in the opening 20 minutes. Take this into consideration and play the Over in the first period.

            Special Teams

The Flyers travel to Ottawa on Wednesday night and will look for their power play to get rolling against a Senators side that is still adjusting to life after Erik Karlsson. Philadelphia ranked seventh in the NHL last season in terms of power play face-offs won, while the Senators were No. 21 in short-handed face-offs won. With most of resets happening in the offensive zone for the team with the man advantage it gives them more opportunity to keep plays alive and thus more danger to score. The Philadelphia power play should have plenty of chances in this one and their power play face-off success should give confidence in betting on the Flyers to win this game.

            Extra Attackers

Speaking of success with the man advantage, the Boston Bruins ranked 5th in the NHL last season in terms of power play goals scored and they will look to build on last year’s success as they welcome the lowly Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. Edmonton ranked dead last in the NHL last year in scoring goals with the extra attacker, and in a game that figures to be high scoring the difference could end up being the number of opportunities on the power play. Edmonton will be much better this season, but their special teams needs a ton of work and until they can rectify those woes they will continue to lose close games.

            Goalie Profile:

Marc-Andre Fleury Vegas Golden Knights NHL Odds

Fancy seeing you here. Thursday evening marks another return to Pittsburgh for former Penguins and current Golden Knights goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury is still a huge fan favorite in Pittsburgh after being a part of three Stanley Cup titles, and you can be sure he will want to put on a show against his old team. Both teams will be playing in a back-to-back which usually caters to the Under and with all circumstances considered that seems like a pretty solid play in Pittsburgh on Thursday night.

            Injury Update:

The Los Angeles Kings will be without Jonathan Quick between the pipes for at least the next few days as he gets evaluated for a lower body injury, but the prognosis doesn’t look great. The Kings have had to deal with long term injuries to Quick in the past and have made do, but the length of Quick’s absence will greatly impact the totals the Kings are involved in as he is such a security blanket in the Los Angeles crease. Stay tuned to Quick’s injury status and how long he will be out, but as long as he is on the shelf the Over will be a strong play in Kings games.

            Betting trends of note:

            - Under is 8-1 in the last nine meetings between the Blue Jackets and Avalanche in Columbus. Sergei Bobrovsky and Phillip Grubauer will keep these trends afloat as these two sides will be engaged in a hard fought battle that could very well see overtime. Take the under in a 3-2 final at worst.

            - The Flames are 6-1 in their last 7 in Nashville. Calgary seems to have the secret recipe for defeating an otherwise stingy home team and after two shaky outings to start the season the Flames are looking for a statement win. Calgary may not get it done in this spot but this trend is worth noting before you wager the farm on Nashville.

            - The Sharks are 9-1 in their last 10 in Philadelphia. The Sharks have owned the Flyers in Philadelphia and will look to keep their success afloat Tuesday night in what should be one of the most exciting games of the young season. Philadelphia is looking for a bounce back season but their progress will be stalled on Tuesday night at home against San Jose.
