    • Sunday’s 6-pack

      — 49 of 144 underclassmen who declared for the NFL Draft went undrafted.

      — Broncos signed Boise State QB Brett Rypien (Mark Rypien’s nephew).

      — Chiefs signed Vanderbilt QB Kyle Shurmur, son of Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur.

      — Delaware WR Vince Papale Jr signed on with the Raiders.

      — Undrafted U of Buffalo QB Tyree Jackson signed as a free agent with the Bills about five minutes after the draft ended.

      — Alabama had most players drafted (10), followed by Ohio State (9), then Georgia, Oklahoma, Washington (8 each) and Texas A&M (7).

      Quote of the Day
“There was a time when the NFL wouldn’t even allow Las Vegas to advertise during the Super Bowl, and the next thing you know we have an NFL team and could be hosting the Super Bowl soon. So, the climate changes very quickly.”
Jay Kornegay, Executive VP, Westgate SuperBook

      Sunday’s quiz
How many Division I-A football teams are located in the state of Tennessee?

      Saturday’s quiz
Vinny Del Negro was coach of the Clippers before Doc Rivers.

      Friday’s quiz
Texas Tech is located in Lubbock, TX

      Sunday’s List of 13; Clearing out a cluttered mind……

      13) Utah had both its punter and kicker taken Saturday, the first time since 1985 (Clemson) that a team had both its kicking specialists taken in the same draft. Both kids are Australian, too.

      12) Oklahoma obviously had the last two Heisman Trophy winners, and maybe this is why; four of the top 123 players taken in this year’s draft were offensive linemen for the Sooners.

      11) Benny Snell, the Kentucky RB picked by the Steelers in the 4th round, is the grandson of former Jets’ RB Matt Snell, who started for the Jets in Super Bowl III.

      10) More than $106M was bet legally in New Jersey this year on the NCAA Tournament.

      9) Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney signed a 10-year, $93M contract extension that keeps in orange until 2028 and makes him really, really rich.

      8) In his last five PGA golf Championships, Brooks Koepka is a combined 47 under par; PGA moves up to May on the schedule this year, after recently being held in mid-to-late August.

      7) Baseball injuries:
      — Pirates put P Chris Archer (thumb) on IL.
      — Royals put 1B Lucas Duda on IL.
      — Tigers put P Jordan Zimmerman (elbow) on IL.

      6) 6-4 guard Christian Keeling scored 19.1 ppg for Charleston Southern LY; he scored 25 against Clemson, 18 against both Florida/Marquette.

He transferred to North Carolina this week; thats the new thing, kids who score double digits for low major schools being poached by big money teams that have holes on their roster.

      5) Guard Seventh Woods is transferring away from North Carolina, first Tar Heel to do that since 2011, and only fifth transfer out of Chapel Hill in the Roy Williams era.

      4) Today Show host Willie Geist is the great grandson of Herbie Lewis, who played for the Detroit Red Wings in the 1930’s and is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

      3) NHL’s St Louis Blues made the Stanley Cup finals the first three years they were in existence (1968-70), went 0-12 in those three finals series, and have never been back to the finals, despite making the playoffs in 42 of their 51 seasons in the NHL.

When the NHL expanded from six to 12 teams for the ’67-’68 season, they put the six new teams in the same division, and the Blues were the best of those teams right off the bat.

      2) Chargers drafted a QB from North Dakota State in the 5th round; Easton Stick, who was 49-3 as a starter for the Bison— he replaced Carson Wentz as QB at North Dakota State, and figures to replace Philip Rivers down the road with the Chargers.

      1) Alex, I’d like “Irony for $500” please: If you went to the NRA’s annual convention Friday, guns weren’t allowed inside.

          • NHL Stanley Cup playoffs best bets and prop predictions: Expect Avalanche of goals in Shark tank
            Monty Andrews

The Avalanche and Sharks are 18-6-2 O/U in their previous 26 meetings overall, and 9-1-1 to the over in their last 11 encounters in San Jose.

Carolina and San Jose will look to seize 2-0 leads in their respective conference semifinal series as the Stanley Cup playoffs roll on with a two-game Sunday schedule. The Hurricanes are coming off a defensive gem in a 1-0 overtime win over the host Islanders in Game 1, while the Sharks overwhelmed the visiting Colorado Avalanche 5-2 in their series opener. Here are the top betting tips and trends to monitor as a sensational weekend of puck action winds down:

CAROLINA HURRICANES AT NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Moneyline Odds: Carolina +120/New York -140
            Over/Under: 5 goals
Series Price: Carolina -175/NY Islanders +125
Start Time: 3 p.m. ET, Barclays Center, Brooklyn, N.Y.

There's not much optimism for the over in Game 2 after these teams combined for a single goal in the series opener, won by the Hurricanes on Jordan Staal's goal 4:40 into the first extra period. The Isles have now seen five or fewer total goals scored in each of their past four playoff games, and these teams have combined for three or fewer goals in four of their last seven meetings. This is one of the lowest totals you'll see for an NHL game, but the under is still a solid option at -115.

The Isles were snake-bitten in Game 1, but have maintained an incredible level of defense and goaltending, having held their opponents to exactly one goal in four consecutive games. New York scored seven goals in its two home victories over the Penguins, and have a significant goaltending edge over a Hurricanes side that boasts a dreadful .884 save percentage on the road in the postseason. Look for an Islanders bounce-back in Game 2, with the puckline option (+200) an intriguing play.

COLORADO AVALANCHE AT SAN JOSE SHARKS

Moneyline Odds: Colorado +125/San Jose -145
            Over/Under: 6 goals
Series Price: Colorado +180/San Jose -263
Start Time: 7:30 p.m. ET, SAP Center, San Jose, Calif.

The action on the home team should be hot, with Colorado having won just three of its previous 26 visits to San Jose. But if you're looking for a more tangible reason to pick the Sharks, consider this: San Jose has averaged 4.5 goals in its past four meetings with Colorado, winning all four of those games while scoring in 10 of 12 periods over that stretch. The Avalanche have lost their last five trips to San Jose and were outclassed in Game 1; we like the home team on the puckline in Game 2 (+185).

The first game of the series finished Over 6, which comes as no surprise to those who have followed the head-to-head history of these teams. They're now 18-6-2 O/U in their previous 26 meetings overall, and 9-1-1 to the over in their last 11 encounters in San Jose. The teams have combined for 14 power play goals in the Stanley Cup playoffs, while both penalty killing units are operating under 80 percent to date. Look for the Over trend to continue in earnest Sunday at -125.

              • Hurricanes rally to beat Islanders 2-1, take 2-0 series lead
                April 28, 2019
                By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Warren Foegele and Nino Niederreiter scored 48 seconds apart early in the third period to rally the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday and a 2-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Petr Mrazek stopped nine of 10 shots he faced before leaving with an injury 6 1/2 minutes into the second period. Curtis McElhinney came on and finished with 17 saves to help Carolina win for the sixth time in its last seven playoff games.

Mathew Barzal scored and Robin Lehner made with 16 saves for the Islanders. New York, which had home-ice advantage in a seven-game series for the 15th time, has opened with two losses for the first time.

Game 3 is Wednesday night in Raleigh, North Carolina.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Tyson Barrie scored the tiebreaking goal and assisted on two others and Colorado beat San Jose to even the Western Conference semifinal series at a game apiece.

The Avalanche were in danger of falling into a 2-0 series hole when coach Jared Bednar reunited his top line by moving Mikko Rantanen up to play with Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog with his team trailing 1-0 in the second period. The move led to a goal by Landeskog on their first shift together and another by Barrie later in the period to help Colorado bounce back from a 5-2 loss in the series opener.

Former Shark Matt Nieto scored in the third period, MacKinnon added an empty-netter and Philipp Grubauer made 31 saves. Brent Burns scored twice and Evander Kane also scored for the Sharks.

Game 3 is Tuesday night in Denver.

                    Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……..

                    13) There have already been 20 picks traded in the 2020 NFL Draft.

                    12) This was the first time since 1962 that no Nebraska players were drafted.

                    11) Warriors 104, Rockets 100— James Harden was 5-12 inside arc, 4-16 on arc, 13-14 on line; Houston was +3 in the 39:00 he was on the floor. As a team, Rockets took 47 3-pointers (14-47), only 2-pointers.

                    10) Baseball injuries:
                    — Christian Yelich left Sunday’s game with lower back discomfort.
                    — Robinson Cano got hit on the hand, left the same game; x-rays were negative.
                    — Fernando Tatis Jr (hamstring) left the Padres game in the 10th inning.

                    9) Going into Sunday’s games, Mets pitchers led NL in strikeouts, but were last in ERA.

Only twice has a team led the league in pitching strikeouts but were last in ERA for a full season; the 1958 Dodgers and the 2007 Devil Rays. Both teams made it to the World Series the year after this happened.

                    8) It is April 29 but if you’re a Mets fan, it is not too early to worry:
                    — Jacob deGrom’s ERA in five starts: 4.85
                    — Noah Syndergaard’s ERA in six starts: 6.35

                    7) Eight of Met rookie Pete Alonso’s nine HR’s have come against relief pitchers.

                    6) Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff is only lefty-hitting pitcher ever to homer in a postseason game against a lefty pitcher. He homered off of Clayton Kershaw in LY’s playoffs.

                    5) Buffalo Bills open this season with consecutive games in the Meadowlands, against the Jets in Week 1, then the Giants in Week 2.

                    4) Former Jaguars/Raiders coach Jack del Rio did a solid job in the studio on the NFL Network telecast of the draft this weekend. Looks like a positive addition to their broadcast team.

                    3) Jerry Stackhouse is Vanderbilt’s new basketball coach; he signed Scotty Pippen Jr this week. Young Pippen committed to Vandy back when Bryce Drew was the Commodores’ coach, and he officially signed his letter of intent with Vandy this week.

                    2) Butler poaches 7-foot grad transfer Derrik Smits from Valparaiso; he is the son of former NBA player Rik Smits. Wasn’t so long ago that Butler/Valparaiso were both Horizon League teams (2012)- the last year they were in the same league, Valpo finished three games ahead of Butler in the Horizon.

Seven years later, Butler is in the Big East, Valpo is in the Missouri Valley.

                    1) Cardinals’ pitching prospect Alex Reyes punched a wall after a recent AAA start and broke the left pinky on his non-throwing hand. Reyes is expected to miss three weeks.

                        • Preview: Blues (45-28) at Stars (43-32)
                          Date: April 29, 2019 8:00 PM EDT

The St. Louis Blues will try to regain home-ice advantage when they visit the Dallas Stars for Game 3 of their Western Conference second-round series on Monday night.

The Stars won Game 2 in St. Louis 4-2 on Saturday to even the best-of-seven series at 1-1.

"It's going to be tight," Blues coach Craig Berube said the loss. "Both teams play good defensive hockey, both goalies are playing well."

Ben Bishop of the Stars and Jordan Binnington of the Blues were the only two NHL goalies to allow an average of fewer than two goals per game during the regular season.

Binnington, who didn't become the No. 1 goalie in St. Louis until early January, led the league with a 1.89 goals-against average, while Bishop was second at 1.98.

Bishop had the top save percentage in the NHL during the regular season at .934 and Binnington was tied for fourth at .927.

Binnington outplayed Bishop in a 3-2 win in Game 1 on Thursday, but Bishop came back with 32 saves in Game 2, a strong bounce-back performance after he stopped only 17 of 20 shots in the opener.

"Every game is a new game," said Bishop, who is 26-16 in his postseason career with a 2.08 GAA and .929 save percentage. "That's the way that I've done it in my career in the playoffs. I try not to get caught up in the past."

As strong as Binnington was during the regular season, he wasn't particularly sharp in his three regular-season starts against Dallas, posting an .879 save percentage and 2.76 GAA.

"They're a highly offensive team and they've got some skill, so they can capitalize on their chances," Binnington said.

Dallas forward Jamie Benn has a goal and an assist so far in the series. He scored five goals in four regular-season games against St. Louis this season as well.

This is Benn's fifth playoff series in 10 seasons with this Stars and he's never made it out of the second round.

Dallas rookie Roope Hintz scored two goals in Game 2 to give him four in these playoffs, tying the franchise record for the most goals by a rookie in a single postseason. Niko Kapanen scored four goals for Dallas during the 2003 playoffs.

Blues defenseman Colton Parayko said the Stars' combination of size and speed has been difficult to counter.

"They do a good job of getting up ice," Parayko said. "I think just advancing it past them and making sure that we get in the zone cleanly, but obviously that's easier said than done. We'll take a look at the video and kind of go from there."

Berube said the Blues needs to be better in a number of areas if they hope to take a 2-1 series lead.

"We've got to do a better job of little things, like in the breakout, better execution, and face-offs," Berube said. "That will help for sure."

Stars coach Jim Montgomery knows there's still a long series ahead with more ups and downs to come.

"The thing that our group has shown is that we're resilient," Montgomery said. "We always come back with a better effort."

                            • Blues vs Stars NHL betting picks and predictions: Find third-period profits with this prop
                              Monty Andrews

Dallas rebounded from a 3-2 defeat in Game 1 by jumping out to a 3-1 first period lead in Game 2 and hanging on for a 4-2 victory. But don't expect the Blues to go quietly.

The Dallas Stars used a road split in their first-round series with Nashville to propel themselves to a six-game victory. They hope to do the same in Round 2 as they host the St. Louis Blues in Game 3 of their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal.

Dallas rebounded from a 3-2 defeat in Game 1 by jumping out to a 3-1 first period lead in Game 2 and hanging on for a 4-2 victory. But don't expect the Blues to go quietly. They're unbeaten on the road in the Stanley Cup playoffs, defeating the Jets three times in Winnipeg en route to a six-game first-round triumph.

We break down the best bets for the NHL odds for Game 3 between the Blues and Stars Monday night – from quick-paying props to the moneyline and Over/Under.

St. Louis Blues vs. Dallas Stars (-115, 5)

                              QUICK-HITTER

Both teams have played eight games in the postseason. The Stars have seen a total of 13 first-period goals scored in their playoff contests, while the Blues have been part of 12 goals in the opening period. That makes for a difficult first-period totals bet, with both sides sitting right near the 1.5 first-period goals-per-game threshold.

But with the Stars scoring seven of their eight first-period goals in just two of those games, we like these teams to keep things low-scoring in the opening 20 minutes of Game 3. Rather than going with the Under 1.5 (-170), we suggest the "exactly one goal" prop. The chances are good that someone will score.

PREDICTION: Exactly one first-period goal scored (+160)

                              PERIOD BET

The Blues and their opponents have saved the best for last throughout the majority of their Stanley Cup playoff run. Consider St. Louis' total goal distribution by period so far in the playoffs: 12 in the first period, 10 in the second and 20 in the third. And while the Stars' second period has been the most prolific of all, they've allowed more goals in the final period (six) than either of the first two.

Both teams also saw opponents score more third-period goals during the regular season than either of the first or second frames – all of which we're using to say that the third is a great choice as the highest-scoring period of Game 3.

                              PREDICTION: Highest-scoring period: Period 3 (+225)

                              TEAM/PLAYER BET

Some guys seem to thrive when playing on the road and Vladimir Tarasenko is near the top of the list among forwards still toiling in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Tarasenko finished tied for sixth in the NHL in away goals during the regular season (21) despite finishing tied for 30th in overall goals (33).

He's also one of the hottest players in this series, having racked up four goals in eight postseason games after finishing the regular season with seven points over his final four contests. At decent odds to score anytime in Game 3, Tarasenko is a must-play option for those favoring the Blues.

PREDICTION: Vladimir Tarasenko anytime goal (+230)

                              FULL-GAME TOTAL

It's no surprise that the Game 3 total is sitting at five goals after the teams combined for 11 goals in the first two games in St. Louis. And that might tempt some bettors to consider the Over, but there are two strong trends at work that should keep this game on the Under 5 side.

Dallas boasted the lowest home goals-against average during the regular season at 2.24, while the Blues were one of three teams (Calgary and the New York Islanders were the others) to post the lowest road GAA in the league (2.39). Look for goals to be at a premium in what should be a closely contested Game 3.

                              PREDICTION: Under 5 (-120)

                              FULL-GAME SIDE

This one is a near-toss-up in oddsmakers' eyes, and with good reason. Both sides are 5-3 in the postseason, have one win apiece in this series and are separated by just one goal through two games. But we like the Stars to prevail in this one on the strength of home-ice advantage and superior special teams.

Dallas is scoring on 19.2 percent of its power-play chances while putting up a 95.5-percent penalty kill success rate. And while the Blues are operating at 23.1 percent efficiency with the man advantage, their penalty kill rate of 77.8 percent is trouble. This one should be close, but we like the hosts to prevail.

                              PREDICTION: Dallas -115

DALLAS (AP) Pat Maroon paused briefly before thrusting both of his arms into the air, unsure if he had gotten the puck into the net to put the St. Louis Blues back in front late in a wild third period.

Maroon's flicked shot across the body and over the right shoulder of Ben Bishop was indeed a goal, a game-winner against the Dallas Stars with 1:38 left to give the Blues a 4-3 victory and a 2-1 series lead in the Western Conference semifinal matchup.

''I think I just had more time and more time to use my hands. Usually I'm muffing it in the pads,'' said Maroon, who gathered the puck before his shot. ''I got it up quick. I've been working on that in practice, is just taking it from the back of the net and trying to lift it instead of just putting it into the pads.''

His second goal of the playoffs ended a span of just under 5 1/2 minutes when both teams scored two goals , including Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo ending a 25-game drought since scoring his last goal Feb. 19.

Jaden Schwartz and Tyler Bozak each had a goal and an assist for the Blues, who are still undefeated on the road this postseason after winning all three games at Winnipeg in the first-round series they won in six games. All four of the road wins have been by one goal.

''I can't explain it. We've been a good road team all year,'' Blues coach Craig Berube said. ''Right from the get-go we were engaged right away in the game. We were aggressive. Sets the tone for us in the game.''

Game 4 is Wednesday night in Dallas.

Pietrangelo's one-timer with 5:36 left, for a 3-2 lead, came right after the end of a Blues power play during which Andrew Cogliano scored a short-handed goal to tie the game 1:18 earlier.

But Dallas quickly got even again at 3-3 on Tyler Seguin's goal with 4:08 left that was his first point in this series, only to see the Blues regain the lead again when the St. Louis-born Maroon got the puck past the Stars goalie who grew up in St. Louis, then was drafted by the Blues and made his NHL debut for them.

''You see the amount of times we came back. It's frustrating to lose a game like that,'' center Jason Spezza said. ''It wasn't our best game, and we still had a chance to win.''

This is Maroon's first season with the Blues after he played his first seven NHL seasons with three other teams, most of it in Anaheim.

''It's his home. It's great for him. We all love Patty,'' Berube said. ''It's a big goal. To do it for your hometown team is pretty special.''

The Stars were on the power play for the final 44 seconds of the game after a delay of game penalty against Colton Parayko, a penalty that was called after a lengthy discussion by the four on-ice officials. Dallas had a two-skater advantage with Bishop out of net and on the bench, but had three shots blocked and missed another before time ran out.

Bishop stopped 30 shots, while Blues rookie goalie Jordan Binnington had 28 saves.

''It was a great playoff game. It was back and forth, both teams were giving what they had,'' Stars coach Jim Montgomery said. ''I just thought the Blues did a better job possessing pucks in the offensive zone than we did.''

Alexander Radulov scored on a power play in the first period for the Stars, his team-high fifth goal of the playoffs.

St. Louis went ahead 2-1 midway through the second period when Vince Dunn passed to Robert Thomas, whose shot from the middle of the right circle got through Bishop's legs and behind him. Bozak was there, along with Stars forward Roope Hintz, and was able to knock the puck in for his second goal of the playoffs.

Even with the wild finish, Binnington had another solid performance in net, including a stop of Radulov's backhand on a breakaway just seconds after the Blues had taken the 2-1 lead in the second. The rookie also had a lead-protecting shot early in the game when he smothered a shot into his gut by Stars captain Jamie Benn, who had already had a shot slip into the outside of the net.

The Blues led 1-0 only 87 seconds into the game when Ryan O'Reilly made a pass from behind the net to Parayko, whose shot from the blue line was hit so hard that Schwartz's stick was reverberating when he deflected the puck past Bishop for the goal.

Dallas got even on a power-play goal in the first by Radulov, who was sliding backward in front of the net and connected on a quick wrister on a pass from Jason Spezza.

NOTES: On the short-handed goal for the Stars, Brayden Schenn pushed a puck to the other end. Mattias Janmark chased down the puck for the Stars and pushed it toward the net. Cogliano scored after knocking in his own rebound. ... Jay Bouwmeester assisted on both St. Louis goals in the third period. ... Before their four-game road winning streak so far in the playoffs, the Blues were 12-4-4 in their last 20 regular-season games away from home.
