    Tweet of the Day
“Most people come in groups of two to six. I always feel bad for that one guy who brings his girlfriend. There’s always that one guy who has to say, ‘Talk to you guys later, I’m going to the Forum shops.’”
Westgate SuperBook VP Jay Kornegay, talking about March Madness in Las Vegas

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

    13) I’m not fond of the baseball season starting at 5:30am on another continent.

If it wasn’t the A’s playing, I’d just sleep thru it and watch the replay later on. Only positive note about all this is that the last time Oakland played over in Japan, they wound up winning their division that year (2012).

    12) Syracuse will be without starting PG Frank Howard when it plays Baylor Thursday; Howard was suspended for violating an athletic department policy. Howard scored 28 points against Duke in the ACC tournament last week.

    11) Over/under betting line on largest margin of victory in first round of NCAA tournament Thursday/Friday: 37.5 points.

    10) North Dakota State 78, North Carolina Central 74— Both teams shot over 40% on arc in this game. Bison bench outscored NC Central’s 17-0, now advances to get crushed by Duke Friday.

    9) Arizona State 74, St John’s 65— This was an awful game; Red Storm starts three juniors and a senior, but they’re not good- they went 9-13 in last 22 games, after going 12-0 vs non-conference schedule #327. Chris Mullin seems like a good guy, but is a suspect coach.

Bobby Hurley continues to be an overbearing jerk on the sidelines; he got a technical near the end of the first half, when his team was up 15; you could tell the ref just got sick of listening to him carp constantly about everything.

    8) Brooklyn Nets were down 25 in the 4th quarter Tuesday, rallied to win in Sacramento, just the 4th time in the shot clock era that has happened.

    7) Been a rough 14 months for former U of San Diego basketball coach Lamont Smith; last year, he got into a fracas with a girlfriend during a Toreros’ road trip, which isn’t so bad, except that he was married at the time. He was shown the door before the season ended.

This week, Smith was named in that big college admissions scandal; now an assistant coach at UTEP, Smith resigned from that job Wednesday.

    6) Norfolk State 80, Alabama 79 OT— Big win for MEAC over an SEC team; Jamerson scored 25 points off the bench for the Spartans, making 7-13 behind the arc.

    5) Harvard 71, Georgetown 68— Hoyas played this game in McDonough Gym, an old gym on campus that looks like a pretty nice high school gym. Georgetown is 34-29 in two years under Patrick Ewing, 14-22 in Big East games.

    4) Happy birthday to the greatest defenseman ever, Bobby Orr, who turned 71 Wednesday. A friend of my parents gave me a subscription to Sports Illustrated for my 9th birthday, and the first issue that arrived had Bobby Orr on the cover, which made me a big Bruins fan.

Bad knees shortened his career, but when he rushed the puck from behind the net, the crowd at Boston Garden would buzz. Bruins won the Stanley Cup in ’70 and ’72. Happy birthday!!!!

    3) QB Tate Martell bolted from Ohio State to Miami, will be eligible this fall; kids who don’t start don’t stick around very much these days.

    2) White Sox signed OF prospect Eloy Jimenez to a 6-year, $43M contract, despite fact that Jimenez hasn’t played in a major league game yet. If he is as good as everyone says, this will wind up being a tremendous bargain for the Pale Hose.

Tampa Bay signed utility guy Brandon Lowe to a 6-year deal with at least $24M; Lowe still qualifies as a rookie; he had 129 AB’s in 43 games last year, hitting .233 with six HR’s, six doubles, 25 RBIs. He made 24 starts at second base, 11 in center field and five in right field.

    1) Alex Bregman signed a 6-year, $100M extension with the Astros, as every AL West team but the A’s spends a load of cash. A’s used their first round pick last June on a quarterback, which would be great, if they were a football team.

    • In the Crease - Week 26
      Joe Williams

      Cat vs. Dog

The Arizona Coyotes are trying to find their way into the Western Conference playoffs, while the Florida Panthers are likely going to have to settle for a spoiler role. Technically, the Panthers are not yet eliminated, but they're seven games out of the last wild-card spot with nine games left to play, so they're running on fumes.

The Panthers are actually pretty healthy favorites in this one, sitting in the -130 neighborhood. The Coyotes are 4-1 in their past five as an underdog between +110 and +150, and they're 10-3 in the past 13 games against teams with a losing overall record. They have won five of the past seven against Atlantic Division teams, too. The Panthers are relishing the role of spoiler while not giving up down the stretch. They're 4-1 in the past five, and 23-9 in their past 32 as a favorite between -110 and -150. However, the Cats are playing in their fourth game in six days, and they're just 3-11 in the past 14 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation. Arizona is 0-4 in their past four skates in Sunrise, though, and the home team has cashed in nine of the past 10 in this series.

Total bettors might like the 'under', too. The under is 9-3-1 in the past 13 in this series, while hitting in five of the past six meetings in South Florida. The under is 7-1-1 in Arizona's past nine against the Atlantic Division, while going 4-1 in the past five road games. For the Panthers, it's been all about the 'over'. The over is 6-1-1 in their past eight home games, and 12-4-1 in the past 17 overall.

      Looking Ahead

      Thursday, March 21

      Tampa Bay at Carolina:
The Lightning present a difficult challenge for the Hurricanes, who are looking to skate into the postseason for the first time since 2009. Tampa Bay is 37-14 in the past 51 road games, although they're playing on no rest after skating in Washington on Wednesday. That's OK, as the Lightning are 5-2 in the past seven on no rest. The Hurricanes had an emotional shootout win against the Penguins on Tuesday, and they're now 4-1 in the past five at home. They're 25-10 in the past 35 overall, too. However, they have struggled with Tampa over the years, going just 4-12 in the past 16 at home while cashing in only six of the past 26 meetings overall.

      Colorado at Dallas:
A game with huge playoff implications in the Western Conference will be this battle in the Metroplex. The Avs have gone cold at the most inopportune time, cashing in just 12 of their past 37 games. They're also just 5-14 in the past 19 against winning teams, too. The Stars have had amazing goaltender play from Ben Bishop lately, as he keeps them in the playoff hunt. The Stars are 7-3 in the past 10 games overall, and 5-1 in the past six against the Central Division. The Avs are just 1-6 in the past seven trips to Dallas, and the home team is 8-2 in the past 10 in this series.

      San Jose at Los Angeles:
The Sharks enter this game on a three-game skid, but they're still 22-10 over the past 32 ouytings. The Sharks have also cashed in nine of their past 11 road games. San Jose has dominated Los Angeles over the years, at least in the regular season. They're 5-1 in the past six meetings, and 10-1 in the past 11 trips to L.A., too. The road team is 7-2 across the past nine. The under is 10-1-5 in the past 16 meetings in this series, while going 3-0-3 in the past six tangles at Staples.

      Friday, March 22

      San Jose at Anaheim:
Not only have the Sharks dominated the Kings, but they have dominated the other Southern California hockey club in recent seasons as well. The Sharks are a blistering 8-1 over the past nine meetings in this series, while winning six consecutive skates on 'The Pond'. The road team has connected in seven of the past 10, while the favorite is 4-1 in the past five meetings overall. The over is 3-1-2 in the past six meetings, but the under is 6-2-4 in the past 12 in Anaheim.

      Saturday, March 23

      N.Y. Islanders at Philadelphia:
The Islanders would love to put a nail in the coffin of their rivals from Philadelphia, and they're in the best position to do it. The away team has won all three previous meetings in this series this season. The Flyers have actually outscored the Islanders 10-9 in the three meetings with the underdog hitting in each of the past three battles. The 'over' has connected in two of three this season, and seven of the past eight meetings in this series, too.

      N.Y. Rangers at Toronto:
The Maple Leafs host a thorn in their side, the Rangers. In the previous two meetings this season the home team has won. Over the past eight meetings the underdog has won in six of the meetings, and the road team has come away victorious in five of the previous eight meetings in this series. Toronto has outscored New York just 28-23 over the past eight meeting, or an average of 6.4 goals per contest.

      Anaheim at Los Angeles:
This SoCal battle isn't as meaningful as past seasons, but you can expect it will still be a contentious affair. Seven of the past 10 meetings in this series have been decided by just one goal, and the 'under' is 3-0-1 across the past four in this series. The favorite is also an impressive 8-2 in the past 10 showdowns, although the 'dog cashed in the most recent meeting when the Kings won 3-2 in Anaheim on March 10 with the Ducks favored -200.

      Sunday, March 24

      Columbus at Vancouver:
The Canucks have really been a major obstacle for the Blue Jackets in recent seasons, as Vancouver has won four in a row in the series, cashing as the underdog in each of the meetings. The Canucks haven't had a lot of success across the board, but they've outscored the Jackets 16-8 during the four-game span, with the road team winning eight of the past nine meetings in this series dating back to Nov. 22, 2013.

                  By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) Malcolm Subban stopped 20 shots for his first NHL shutout, William Karlsson and Reilly Smith each scored twice, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-0 on Thursday night.

Tomas Nosek also scored for Vegas, which is 10-1 since losing to Winnipeg 6-3 in its final game before acquiring Mark Stone at the trade deadline.

Subban, whose shutout came in his 35th career start, has won two straight and seven of his last nine starts. He's also nearly unbeatable at T-Mobile Arena with a 13-1-0 record in two seasons.

Winnipeg dropped to 5-3-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season.

Laurent Broissoit started in net for the Jets, but was pulled after allowing three goals. Connor Hellebuyck, who entered with 14 minutes left in the second period, allowed two goals and made 18 saves.

Victor Hedman had three assists and Louis Domingue stopped 25 of 28 shots for his 13th win in his past 14 starts. Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov became the first player to reach 120 points in a season since 2006-07 with his assist on Johnson's first-period goal.

                      — A’s P prospect Jesus Luzardo (shoulder) will be shut down for 4-6 weeks.

“Before I go to bed, let me just say this: I’m coaching at the Univ. of Kentucky. In my opinion, there is no better job in the world to coach basketball. My plan and my desire is to retire at Kentucky. I think the university feels the same as I do and we’ve talked openly about it.”
John Calipari, shutting down rumors about him going to UCLA

Friday’s Den: Wrapping up the first day of March Madness…….

Minnesota 86, Louisville 76— Coming into this game, Gophers scored 22.2% of their points behind arc, 4th-least in country; they were 11-27 on arc in this game, scoring 38.4% of their points behind arc, and that is how upsets happen.

Bill Murray’s son Luke is an assistant coach for Louisville; his team lost to the Gophers, a bitter pill for Carl Spackler (Caddyshack reference) to swallow. Bill Murray was at this game, too.

LSU 79, Yale 74— LSU jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead, was up 16 at the half, then held for dear life as the gritty Bulldogs fought hard until the end. Yale was only 8-37 on the arc, but four of the makes came near the end, as Yale covered thru the backdoor- they got within 77-74 in last 0:30.

Auburn 79, New Mexico State 78— Auburn got really lucky here; leading by 3 at the end, they fouled a 3-point shooter with 0:01.7 left, but the kid missed two of three FT’s, then the Aggies missed an open 3-pointer at the buzzer. Huge sigh of relief for the Tigers.

Tigers led this game 65-52 with 7:54 left; they made only six of their last 13 foul shots. Auburn didn’t handle time/score situations well at all- their point guard fouled on purpose when he didn’t know he had four fouls. No bueno.

Florida State 76, Vermont 69— Spunky effort by the Catamounts falls short; Florida State has won 15 of its last 17 games. If you laid 8.5 points with the Seminoles, it was a bad beat- kid on FSU had the ball by himself under the basket with 0:06 left but dribbled out the clock instead. Vermont made 16-32 on the arc; not many teams shoot that well from the arc and lose.

Last spring, Seminoles poached grad transfer David Nichols from Albany of America East; kid gets to the NCAA’s and plays against the Catamounts, America East’s best team. Now he and his teammates move on to play Murray State Saturday.

Michigan State 76, Bradley 65— Final score is misleading; three Spartans played 38:00+, thats how tough this was for Izzo’s team. Bradley led by a point with 6:47 left. Since 2012, MVC teams are 9-2-1 vs spread in first round games.

Maryland 79, Belmont 77— Its been seven years since an OVC team won a first round game, but since 2005, they’re 11-4 vs spread in this round. Belmont was up 40-34 at halftime, was up six with 6:36 left.

Kansas 87, Northeastern 53— Except for the championship game, each NCAA tournament win this year will be worth $1.81M to the conference of the school that wins it. The money gets divided up amongst the league’s schools, with team that wins the game getting more $$$ than the other schools.

Murray State 83, Marquette 64— Complete ass-kicking; Marquette didn’t even try to press in the second half, thats how thoroughly beaten they were. Golden Eagles wound up losing six of their last seven games, as Wojciechowski is proving to be a fraud of a coach who got this job because he sat next to Mike Krzyzewski for a few years.

Five years at Marquette, and two NCAA games; losses by 20, 19 points.

Ja Morant had the first triple double by a guard in the NCAA’s since Dwayne Wade.

                            • Wild edge Capitals 2-1 to move into playoff position
                              March 22, 2019

WASHINGTON (AP) Jordan Greenway pumped his fist, and Luke Kunin held out his arms waiting for teammates to join him.

They celebrated like kids after performing like seasoned veterans.

With the Minnesota Wild outside a playoff position with little margin for error, the kid line of Kunin, Greenway and Ryan Donato pumped in two crucial goals to beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals 2-1 on Friday night. Minnesota snapped a two-game skid and leapfrogged the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche to move into the second wild-card spot in a competitive Western Conference race.

''When we have the focus that we did tonight, the confidence, the commitment, I think we can do a lot of good things, and we can beat anyone,'' Greenway said. ''Whether it's Washington or whoever, I think we can beat them.''

Minnesota fed off the confidence of the second line of 21- and 22-year-olds to hand the Capitals their second consecutive loss. Devan Dubnyk made 21 saves, but more impressive was the Wild holding Washington to 22 shots a game after it put up 58 on NHL-leading Tampa Bay.

''That was just a playoff game,'' Dubnyk said. ''The focus was there.''

Donato - acquired from Boston in February - was the best player on the ice for much of the night and assisted on the Greenway's goal in the first period and Kunin's go-ahead goal with 7:35 left in the third. Coach Bruce Boudreau believes having three young players on a line together gets rid of the expectation to pass to a veteran, and this mix is working lately.

''We're learning from each other,'' Donato said. ''I think we're starting to get each other's habits, where we're going to be on the ice, where the other guys are going to be, where they like to pass to. Being able to learn with each other, it makes you feel comfortable on the ice. You don't feel like you're doing anything wrong.''

It wasn't a masterpiece, but Minnesota needed two points in any way possible. Returning to face the team that gave him his start in the NHL, Boudreau knew full well that with only two games Friday night, the Wild were the only ones who could gain ground after getting some help from a Coyotes loss on Thursday.

Remembering his team's recent roller-coaster play, Boudreau said the victory only ''means temporarily we're in a playoff spot.''

The Capitals are in a good spot atop the Metropolitan Division, but have now lost four of six. They missed an opportunity to add to their division lead and still lead the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins by four points.

''We didn't play our game at all,'' captain Alex Ovechkin said. ''We knew they were going to play desperate - they need points as we do - but I think the sense of urgency was on their side, not on our side.''

Brett Connolly scored his 21st goal of the season and Braden Holtby made 25 saves for Washington, which didn't have the same intensity as its showdown against the Lightning two days earlier.

''After coming off some emotional games lately, I think we didn't ramp it up enough for this one, for their situation, how they were playing,'' Holtby said.

Despite losing seven of their previous nine games, the Wild remain in control of their playoff hopes with seven games remaining.

''It's never easy when it's out of your control, so for us having it in our control and getting a win like that, it's definitely a feel-good win,'' Donato said.

NOTES: Minnesota improved to 20-15-2 on the road. ... Donato's primary assist on Greenway's goal was the 10,000th point in Wild franchise history. ... Connolly has 13 points in his past 16 games. ... Washington's power play went 0 for 3 with just one shot in those six minutes. ... Capitals D Christian Djoos returned to the lineup to replace Michal Kempny, who's out indefinitely with a lower-body injury. ... LW Carl Hagelin was a late scratch with an illness and was replaced by Chandler Stephenson. ... Ovechkin remained two goals away from his eighth career 50-goal season.
