    • Caps rebound from early hole, crush Sens
      February 26, 2019
      By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) The reigning Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals spotted the NHL-worst Ottawa Senators an early two-goal lead before turning things around with the help of a pair of second-period scores from T.J. Oshie and winning 7-2 Tuesday night.

Oshie reached 20 goals in a season for the fourth time, while Evgeny Kuznetsov, Tom Wilson, Lars Eller, John Carlson and Brett Connolly also scored. Braden Holtby made 21 saves as Washington won for the fourth time in five games.

The Senators dropped their fifth straight and have lost seven of eight. They have the fewest points in the league and a roster depleted by a trade deadline sell-off.

The Senators jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 7 minutes, 10 seconds, with both scores coming courtesy of players that arrived in deals. Not just that, but the Senators took the game's initial nine shots; the hosts didn't get one until the first period was more than 10 minutes old.

Less than 3+ minutes in, newly acquired Oscar Lindberg scored off a pass from Brian Gibbons. Ottawa doubled its lead on Anthony Duclair's power-play goal. That gave the Senators twice as many goals as they had managed in their previous three games combined.

      BRUINS 4, SHARKS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Charlie McAvoy and Jake DeBrusk scored 37 seconds apart in the second period and Boston won for the eighth time in nine games.

Brad Marchand had a short-handed goal and two assists, David Krejci added a goal and an assist, and Jaroslav Halak made 19 saves. The surging Bruins have earned at least one point in 14 straight games.

Logan Couture scored for San Jose, and Martin Jones stopped 28 shots.

The Sharks, who lost to the Bruins for the second time in eight days, wrapped up a 2-2 Eastern Conference swing.

      FLAMES 3, ISLANDERS 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Mikael Backlund and Rasmus Andersson scored nearly three minutes apart in the third period and Calgary won its season-high sixth straight game.

Mathew Tkachuk also scored and Elias Lindholm had two assists for Pacific Division- and Western Conference-leading Calgary, which won both matchups between the first-place teams in a seven-day stretch. Mike Smith finished with 26 saves to improve to 5-0-1 in his last six starts, including a 4-2 win over the Islanders at home last Wednesday.

Josh Bailey scored for New York, and Robin Lehner stopped 24 shots. The Islanders are 1-2-1 in their last four.

      BLUES 2, PREDATORS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Tyler Bozak broke a scoreless tie with 7:25 left and Jordan Binnington earned his fifth shutout in two months as St. Louis beat Nashville.

Binnington stopped 19 shots. All his shutouts have come since Jan. 7, when he made his first NHL start. He is 14-2-1 in that span.

Bozak took a cross-ice pass from Vladimir Tarasenko in the third period and put the puck through the legs of Predators goalie Juuse Saros, who made 42 saves. Alex Pietrangelo added an empty-net goal on a power play with four seconds remaining.

St. Louis won the season series 4-1-0, taking the final four matchups from its Central Division rival. The Blues are 11-4-0 in their last 15 games against the Predators, who have a one-point lead in the division over Winnipeg.

St. Louis has won its past seven home games, the longest active streak in the league. The third-place Blues also set a franchise record with 12 wins in February and matched their mark for any month (April 2013).

      WILD 3, JETS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Jason Zucker and Joel Eriksson scored 26 seconds apart late in the third period, and Minnesota rallied past Winnipeg for its fourth straight win.

Zucker beat a screened Connor Hellebuyck at 18:33, and Eriksson's goal withstood a replay review and a goaltender interference challenge by the Jets at 18:59.

Brad Hunt had the other goal for the Wild, and Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves. Minnesota won all four games against Winnipeg this season.

Patrik Laine had a goal and an assist and Mark Scheifele also scored for the Jets, who are 1-4-1 in their last six games. Hellebuyck stopped 36 shots.

      PENGUINS 5, BLUE JACKETS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Jared McCann scored twice, Matt Murray made 21 saves and Pittsburgh beat Columbus.

Jake Guentzel, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby also scored for Pittsburgh, which snapped a two-game skid.

Oliver Bjorkstrand and Cam Atkinson scored, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 22 shots for the Blue Jackets, who lost after posting back-to-back shutouts last week and revamping their lineup just before Monday's trade deadline. Columbus started the day in third place in the division.

      HURRICANES 6, KINGS 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Dougie Hamilton had two goals and an assist and Carolina topped Los Angeles for its third straight win.

Teuvo Teravainen added a goal and three assists, Micheal Ferland had a goal and an assist and Sebastian Aho and Jaccob Slavin also scored for the Hurricanes. Jordan Staal finished with three assists.

Dustin Brown scored Los Angeles' lone goal. The Kings have lost nine straight (0-6-3) and are in last place in the Western Conference. The Kings haven't won since Feb. 7, and are in the midst of their worst losing streak since dropping a franchise-record 11 straight in 2004.

      FLYERS 5, SABRES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jake Voracek, James van Riemsdyk and Claude Giroux scored as Philadelphia kept its tenuous playoff hopes alive with a win over Buffalo.

Oskar Lindblom scored just 2:48 into the game and Travis Sanheim netted his sixth of the season just 46 seconds into the third for Philadelphia. Brian Elliott made 34 saves.

Jack Eichel scored his 22nd goal and Casey Mittelstadt had his ninth of the season for the Sabres, who began the day in 10th place (66 points), but were passed by the Flyers (67 points) in the chase for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

      CANADIENS 8, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Andrew Shaw recorded his first career hat trick and Max Domi had two goals and three assists for a career-high five points in Montreal's rout of Detroit.

Tomas Tatar, Brendan Gallagher, and Joel Armia also scored for Montreal. Jonathan Drouin had a career-best four assists, defenseman Jordie Benn added two assists and Carey Price made 28 saves.

Anthony Mantha scored for Detroit, which allowed a hat trick for the second straight game. Jimmy Howard returned after missing two games due to illness and made 16 saves and allowed six goals before being pulled after the second period. Howard has been pulled in three consecutive starts. Jonathan Bernier stopped 10 shots in relief.

            ************************

            Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

            13) Clippers’ coach Doc Rivers is a classy guy; with 0:09.4 left in the Clippers’ win over Dallas late Monday night, Rivers grabs the PA mike at Staples Center and asks the crowd to thank Dirk Nowitzki for his great career- that was Dirk’s last game against the Clippers at Staples. The crowd responded and gave him a warm ovation. Very cool moment.

            12) NBA has a problem; Pelicans lost 111-110 at home to Philly Monday night, but their star did not play in the 4th quarter. New Orleans is only playing Anthony Davis so the league doesn’t fine them, but they’ve capped his minutes and he often doesn’t play in the 4th quarter.

Why would you pay to see a New Orleans home game if they’re not trying to win? If Davis sits the whole 4th quarter in a one-point game, it is obvious they’re not trying to win.

            11) Nolan Arenado inked an 8-year, $260M extension with the Colorado Rockies, which is great news for Colorado fans and people who have Arenado on their fantasy team.

            10) MLB Network should have a weekly window to show a game from the Japanese leagues; you don’t need announcers over there, just good graphics and an analyst in the MLB Network studio talking us through the game. Would be interesting to see how good the play is in Japan.

            9) Headline in a newspaper last week: “Arizona psychic hit by a car, says he never saw it coming” Ummm, this is not America’s finest psychic.

            8) Timberwolves’ star Karl-Anthony Towns dodged a bullet over the weekend after a semi truck rear-ended the car he and the Wolves’ assistant strength coach were riding in. Towns had played in 303 consecutive games before that- he returned to the lineup Tuesday and scored 34 points with 21 rebounds in Minnesota’s win over the Kings.

            7) Great news for the LA Rams; LT Andrew Whitworth will return in 2019, for his 14th season in the NFL. Signing Whitworth as a free agent two years ago is a huge reason why the Rams have been so good under Sean McVay.

            6) Two of my favorite players to watch in the NBA: Montrezl Harrell of the Clippers and Stephen Adams of the Thunder. Not the most skilled players, but they play so hard and give great effort- they help their teams win.

            5) NHL’s Colorado Avalanche is 1-11 in OT/SO this season, 0-4 this month. Colorado’s only OT win this season was November 18, 4-3 over Anaheim.

            4) Good idea by the NBA; the best players in the G-League will join top college prospects at the NBA Combine every spring. Lets face it, lot of the best guys in the G-League should probably still be playing in college anyway.

            3) Alabama and Clemson each have 11 players at the NFL Scouting Combine this week; schools like Tennessee, Arizona and Purdue don’t have any.

            2) Eight members of the Portland Trailblazers were trapped in an elevator Tuesday for a half hour at their team hotel in Boston. Everyone eventually got out unscathed.

            1) Conference tournaments start Monday, when the Atlantic Sun tourney starts; on Tuesday, the Patriot, Big South and Horizon events kick off. Two fun weeks every year, heading into Selection Sunday, and then two more weeks of fun.

                  • Lightning win 10th straight, Flames streak to 7th in a row
                    February 27, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Victor Hedman scored at 3:25 of overtime and the Tampa Bay Lightning extended their winning streak to a franchise-record 10 games with a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Tyler Johnson, J.T. Miller and Dan Girardi also scored for Tampa Bay, which has an NHL-leading 102 points. Nikita Kucherov added three assists to give him a league-leading 74. Andrei Vasilevskiy had 33 saves.

Jimmy Vesey had a goal and assist for the Rangers. Mika Zibanejad and Boo Nieves also scored. Alexandar Georgiev had 26 saves, including stopping Hedman on a breakaway earlier in overtime.

                    FLAMES 2, DEVILS 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau set up two second-period goals and Western Conference-leading Calgary extended its season-high winning streak to seven games with a victory over New Jersey.

Elias Lindholm and Mark Giordano scored for the Flames, who have points in eight straight games. David Rittich made 19 saves in improving to 22-5-5.

Kevin Rooney scored a short-handed goal for the Devils. Mackenzie Blackwood, who spent the last three weeks in the minor leagues, was outstanding in making 33 saves in his return to the NHL.

The game was delayed about 10 minutes early in the third period after Devils defenseman Mirco Mueller crashed into the end boards on a rush and had to be taken on the ice on a stretcher. He moved his legs and gave a thumbs-up to fans.

                    MAPLE LEAFS 6, OILERS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Andreas Johnsson scored twice during Toronto's four-goal outburst in a seven-minute stretch to open the second period and the Maple Leafs cruised past Edmonton.

Mitch Marner added a goal and two assists, while John Tavares, William Nylander and Patrick Marleau all had a goal and an assist for Toronto. Frederik Andersen made 34 saves for the Maple Leafs, who turn their attention to Thursday night when they visit the Islanders in Tavares' return to New York.

Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for Edmonton. Mikko Koskinen allowed four goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Anthony Stolarz, who finished with 18 saves.

Oilers star Connor McDavid returned to the lineup after serving his two-game suspension for a hit to the head on Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy last week.

                    AVALANCHE 3, CANUCKS 2, SO

DENVER (AP) - Carl Soderberg scored in the sixth round of the shootout, Semyon Varlamov came up with big saves all night long and Colorado beat Vancouver.

Soderberg knocked in the winner off the glove of Jacob Markstrom as the Avalanche improved to 2-12 in games beyond regulation. Varlamov made 30 saves through overtime and five more in the shootout.

Mikko Rantanen had a goal and Nathan MacKinnon added his 33rd goal of the season to tie captain Gabriel Landeskog for the team lead. The Avalanche have gone 5-0-1 over their last six games to climb back into the playoff chase.

Josh Leivo tied the game at 2 with 3:02 remaining in regulation on a wrist shot. Antoine Roussel also scored for the Canucks.

                    BLACKHAWKS 4, DUCKS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Patrick Kane scored with 16.1 seconds remaining on an odd-man rush and the Chicago Blackhawks rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night.

Alex DeBrincat scored two goals, Artem Anisimov had a short-handed goal and Corey Crawford made 29 saves as the Blackhawks snapped a two-game losing streak.

Devin Shore, Carter Rowney and Troy Terry scored for Anaheim, which has dropped its last four. Miller stopped 31 shots.

                      ********************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…..
                      13) Here’s a question for us to consider; if Zion Williamson doesn’t play anymore this season. where do you seed Duke in the NCAA’s? How good are the Blue Devils without him?

I don’t have an answer to this, other than if he is indeed out for the year, Duke won’t say so before Selection Sunday, because that would diminish their seeding, maybe a couple of lines?

                      12) Virginia Tech 77, Duke 72— There is a kid on Duke who has missed 28 3-pointers in a row, and his 3-point %age (26.5%) is still better than Duke’s PG, Tre Jones (24.6%). Blue Devils are shooting 29.6% on the arc in conference games, 30.7% for the season.

                      11) Philadelphia Eagles are not franchise-tagging QB Nick Foles; he will be become a free agent, and I’m guessing a really highly sought-after one.

                      10) Villanova 67, Marquette 61— Two best teams in Big East hooked up here; chances are they’ll meet again on March 16, in Big East tournament final. Kid named Samuels on Villanova was averaging four points a game; he had 29 points in this one.

                      9) Tennessee 73, Ole Miss 71— Vols are tied with Kentucky/LSU atop the SEC; they host the Wildcats in Knoxville Saturday.

                      8) Baylor 84, Texas 83 OT— Horrific loss for Longhorns, who led by 19 with 14:56 left to play; leading 83-82, they turned ball over on an inbounds play with 0:07 left. Not good.

                      7) Trailblazers 97, Celtics 92— Boston is 1-8 vs spread if they played the night before.

                      6) West Virginia 104, TCU 96, 3OT— These teams battled it out for 55:00 Tuesday night and the Horned Frogs went home with a costly loss. West Virginia is having a lousy season but Derek Culver is developing into a pretty good player- he had 22 points, 21 rebounds in this game.

                      5) Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery got suspended for two games after he berated a ref after the Hawkeyes’ 90-70 loss at Ohio State Tuesday. If you’re going to berate a ref and curse him out multiple times, better not to do it where media people can hear you.

                      4) Was wondering about this today so I looked it up; Wayne Gretzky is the NHL’s all-time leader in empty net goals, with 56.

Marion Hossa is 2nd on this list, with 40, followed by Mario Lemieux and Alex Ovechkin, with 33 each.

                      3) Heat 126, Warriors 125— Dwyane Wade banked in the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer after his first shot was blocked. Miami is a half-game out of the last playoff spot in the East.

                      2) On Tuesday, Mets’ OF Brandon Nimmo ate undercooked chicken that he cooked himself and got sick- the team sent him home from their game on Wednesday. Mets’ plan to teach him how to cook. Ordering out would also seem to be a good idea.

                      Oy.

                      1) 80-year old Bobby Knoop retired this week as a coach/instructor with the Angels; he was in baseball for 53 years, playing nine years in the major leagues, mostly in Anaheim. He made one All-Star Game and won three Golden Gloves.

Why bring this up? Because when I was a kid playing in Little League, a long, long time ago, I used a baseball glove signed by Bobby Knoop. I sucked at baseball, but wasn’t a bad fielder at least, and that glove was awesome. So thank you Bobby Knoop, and enjoy your retirement!!!

                      • In the Crease - Week 23
                        Joe Williams

Johnny T Back To The Island

The New York Islanders host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night at the Uniondale Coliseum, and it should be looked at as a key Eastern Conference showdown between two top powers with playoff implications. However, all eyes will be focused on John Tavares, who makes his first return to New York after spurning the team in free agency to go play in his hometown of Toronto instead. Fans felt betrayed, and have even taken to social media to post asinine videos which, for all intents and purposes, are likely ignored by the star. However, the fans will have a voice inside the arena when Tavares skates against the team, and things could get really interesting when the organization shows a video tribute reflecting on Tavares' nine years in New York.

As far as the game itself is concerned, the Leafs are playing in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 (four games in six days) situation. In the fourth game they have excelled in the situation, going 8-0 in the past eight tries. They're also 6-0 in the past six road games against a team with a winning home mark, and 6-2 overall in the past eight against winning sides. For the Isles, they're 8-2 across the past 10 home games, while going 22-10 in the past 32 games overall. Toronto has won four of the past five in this series, although the home team is 6-2 in the past eight meetings, and the favorite has hit in six of the past seven. The 'over' is 10-2 in the past 12 meetings in New York, and 39-19-2 in the past 60 meetings overall.

                        Looking Ahead

                        Thursday, Feb. 28

                        Tampa Bay at Boston:
The Lightning have rolled up 41 victories in the past 52 games overall, and they're 41-11 in the past 52 games as a favorite, too. Boston could have an advantage facing the Lightning since Tampa just played last night, as they're 5-1 in the past six games playing on no rest. They have also won 39 of the past 56 games on the road, too. For the Bruins, they have won eight of the past nine games overall, while going 4-0 in the past four working on one day of rest. They have also tossed up 44 wins in the past 62 at home, but they're just 2-5 in the past seven against Eastern Confernce foes. Tampa is 9-29-3 in the past 41 trips to Boston, but they're 5-0 in the past five meetings in this series. The favorite is also 25-11 in the past 36. The under is 3-1-1 in the past five battles in Beantown, while the under is 7-2-2 in the past 11 in the series.

                        Vancouver at Arizona:
The Canucks limp into Arizona with just one win in the past five outings, while going 2-5 in the past seven against Western Conference foes, too. They're also 1-4 in the past five road contests against teams with a losing overall mark. Arizona has actually rattled off four wins in a row, and they're 6-0 in the past six against losing teams. They have also come away with victories in four of the past five at home. Vancouver has won just once in the past six in this series, and they're 1-4 in the past five trips to Arizona. The under is 13-2-1 in the past 16 skates in Glendale, too.

                        Friday, March 1

                        Washington at N.Y. Islanders:
The Islanders have another emotional battle on Friday night, as the defending Stanley Cup champs pay a visit to their former coach, Barry Trotz, who has done wonders with the Isles. The Caps were skidding around the All-Star break, but they're 4-1 in the past five overall. They're also 19-8 in the past 27 inside the Eastern Conference. New York has won just eight of the past 10 games at home, while going 9-1 in the past 10 when working on no rest. They're also 7-1 in the past eight in the third game of a 3-in-4 (three games in four days) situation. The 'under' is also 7-3-1 in the past 11 meetings in New York.

                        Colorado at San Jose:
The Avalanche are trying to stay in the Western Conference playoff picture, while the Sharks are trying to win a championship. They built up their roster at the trade deadline, and look like one of the four strongest teams out west. Colorado has owned the west lately, going 5-0 in the past five against Western Conference teams. They're also 5-1 in the past six overall, and 4-1 in the past five against winning teams. San Jose is 8-2 in the past 10 at home, while going 16-7 in the past 23 overall. SAP Center has been a house of horrors for Colorado over the years, as the Avalanche are just 4-22 in the past 26 trips to Silicon Valley. The 'over' is a solid 6-0-1 in the past seven in San Jose, and 15-5-2 in the past 22 meetings overall.

                        Saturday, March 2

                        Buffalo at Toronto:
The Maple Leafs have won both previous meetings, but it hasn't been easy. The last meeting was a 5-3 win in Toronto on Feb. 25, but it was a late empty-net goal that made it look worse than it was. The Sabres also fell on home ice by a 4-3 score in overtime back on Dec. 4 in the first meeting. In the past eight meetings the 'over' has connected in seven games, and Toronto has outscored Buffalo by a 30-25 margin.

                        Ottawa at Tampa Bay:
This might be the highest line we've seen all season, perhaps in excess of -400. Ottawa sold off all of their expensive assets at the trade deadline and they're turning it over to the kids. In their first game after selling off on Monday, they were smashed 7-2 in Washington. Tampa Bay won their franchise record 10th consecutive game on Wednesday night at N.Y. Rangers, and they're looking like the Golden State Warriors of hockey right now.

                        Minnesota at Calgary:
The Wild and Flames tangle in Calgary, and the Pacific leaders look to stay hot. Calgary has won the first two meetings this season, but its been a dogfight. They won 2-1 in St. Paul on Dec. 15, and 2-0 in Calgary on Dec. 6. In fact, the 'under' has cashed in four straight meetings in this series. Three of the past four in this series have resulted in one-goal games, and seven of the past nine contests have been decided by one goal. That's news puck-line bettors need to know.

                        Sunday, March 3

                        Chicago at San Jose:
The Blackhawks are trying to stay afloat in the chase for a playoff spot out west, but a trip to San Jose is a tall order if they want points. These teams have met just once, with San Jose embarrassing Chicago in the Windy City by a 7-3 score back on Dec. 16. San Jose has won three straight in this series, and the 'over' has connected in three in a row. The home team has also won five of the past seven in this series.
