    February 14, 2019
    By The Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 39th goal, T.J. Oshie had two goals and an assist, and the Washington Capitals beat the San Jose Sharks 5-1 on Thursday night.

Jakub Vrana and Tom Wilson each had a goal and an assist, and Nicklas Backstrom had two assists for Washington. Braden Holtby stopped 24 shots, and Ovechkin added an assist as the Capitals won for the fifth time in seven games after dropping seven straight.

San Jose ended a six-game winning streak, which began with a 7-6 overtime win at Washington on Jan. 22. Sharks goalie Martin Jones turned back 18 shots.

The Sharks took an early lead on Kevin Labanc's 11th goal at 2:06 of the first period, but it was all Washington after that.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Auston Matthews scored two goals, including the 100th of his career, to lead Toronto over Vegas.

The Maple Leafs, who improved to 36-18-3 this season and 19-7-2 on the road, are 15-7-0 against the Western Conference and 9-2-0 against Pacific Division opponents this season.

Morgan Rielly scored his fifth game-winner when his shot made its way through traffic to beat Marc-Andre Fleury and put Toronto ahead 4-3 at the midway point of the third period.

Vegas, meanwhile, has lost three in a row and a franchise-record five straight at T-Mobile Arena, including the first three of a four-game homestand.

    ISLANDERS 3, BLUE JACKETS 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Thomas Greiss stopped 31 shots for his fourth shutout of the season and New York beat Columbus.

Casey Cizikas scored twice on breakaways and Josh Bailey also had a goal for the Islanders, who cruised to their fifth win in the last seven games.

Greiss was outstanding in getting his 12th career shutout and the Islanders defenders showed why they are tops in the NHL in keeping opponents' pucks out of their net. New York, which began the night three points ahead of Washington atop the Metropolitan Division, snapped the Blue Jackets' four-game win streak.

Sergei Bobrovsky had 24 saves for the Blue Jackets, who is tied with Pittsburgh with 67 points but holds third place in the Metropolitan due to a game in hand. The game was a letdown for Columbus, which seemed to have momentum after shutting out the Capitals by the same score on Tuesday.

    LIGHTNING 6, STARS 0

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Steven Stamkos had two goals and an assist, Nikita Kucherov added a goal and three assists, and Tampa Bay beat Dallas.

Tyler Johnson, Mikhail Sergachev and Alex Killorn also scored to help the Lightning improve to 6-0-2 in the last eight games and reach 90 points in 58 games this season. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 32 shots for his fifth shutout of the season and 17th of his career to tie Ben Bishop for most in team history.

Dallas goalie Anton Khudobin was pulled from the game twice, allowing five goals on 21 shots. Landon Bow finished with four saves in 27:07 of ice time for Dallas, which fell to 1-2-1 in the past four games.

    BLACKHAWKS 5, DEVILS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Patrick Kane scored his 34th goal and added two assists to lead Chicago over New Jersey for its eighth victory in nine games.

Brandon Saad and Artem Anisimov each had a goal and an assist, and Jonathan Toews and Drake Caggiula also scored for the Blackhawks. Cam Ward stopped 41 shots.

Damon Severson and Travis Zajac scored to give the Devils a 2-0 lead with a little more than three minutes left in the first period before the Blackhawks took over. New Jersey has lost two straight and five of its last six.

Devils goalie Cory Schneider finished with 31 saves to extend his regular-season winless streak to 24 games. He is now 0-17-4 since his last win Dec. 27, 2017.

    BLUES 4, COYOTES 0

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Jordan Binnington matched a franchise rookie record with his seventh straight victory, Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice and St. Louis stretched its longest winning streak in 18 years to eight games.

Joel Edmundson scored early in the first and had an assist on Tarasenko's goal late in the period. Tarasenko put the Blues up 3-0 late in the second period with a power-play goal, giving him nine goals and eight assists during a career-high 10-game points streak.

Robert Bortuzzo scored his second goal of the third period for the Blues, who have their longest winning streak since 2000-01. St. Louis is 14-4-1 in 2019, including 9-2-1 on the road. Binnington made 21 saves.

    CANUCKS 4, KINGS 3, SO

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser scored in a shootout after Adam Gaudette tied it with 1:38 remaining in the third period to lift Vancouver.

Pettersson and Boeser also scored in regulation for the Canucks, who had lost four straight road games. Jacob Markstrom made 35 saves through overtime, before allowing a shootout goal to Ilya Kovalchuk and then stopping Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe.

Alec Martinez had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who had not played at home since Jan. 21 because of the All-Star Game, bye week and a six-game road trip while Staples Center hosted the Grammys. Jonathan Quick made 24 saves.

    PANTHERS 3, FLAMES 2, SO[/B]

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Vincent Trocheck scored in the third round of the shootout to lift Florida over Calgary.

Elias Lindholm scored for Calgary late in the third period to extend the game, but Matthew Tkachuk missed in the third round of the shootout with a chance to do the same.

Mike Hoffman had a goal and an assist, and Evgenii Dadonov scored for Florida. Mark Jankowski also had a goal for the Flames, who lost their fourth straight. Florida goalie James Reimer, pulled to start the third period in Sunday's 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay, stopped 41 shots. Mike Smith had 30 saves and lost his third straight.

    AVALANCHE 4, JETS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Gabriel Landeskog scored his team-leading 30th goal of the season as Colorado beat Winnipeg to snap its season-high eight-game losing streak.

Dominic Toninato got his first NHL goal, and J.T. Compher and Sven Andrighetto also scored for the Avalanche, who were 0-5-3 during their skid. Matt Nieto had two assists, and Semyon Varlamov stopped 24 shots.

Brandon Tanev scored his career-high 12th goal of the season for Winnipeg, which lost in regulation at home for the first time in 10 games (8-1-1). Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves.

    PREDATORS 3, CANADIENS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pekka Rinne made 34 saves, Viktor Arvidsson scored and Nashville beat Montreal.

Ryan Hartman and Brian Boyle also had the goals for Nashville, which snapped a three-game skid.

Tomas Tatar scored and Carey Price made 35 saves for Montreal, which has lost consecutive games for the first time since early January.

    RED WINGS 3, SENATORS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Andreas Athanasiou scored twice, including a penalty shot, and Jimmy Howard made 40 saves in his 500th game to lead Detroit over Ottawa.

Frans Nielsen scored to break a 2-2 tie late in the second period.

Brady Tkachuk and Matt Duchene scored for Ottawa, and Anders Nilsson stopped 26 shots.

        — Furman 67, NC-Greensboro 57— Spartans fall two games behind Wofford in SoCon.

        — Gonzaga 73, LMU 60— Lions played well, played their hearts out, but lost by 13.

        — Utah 83, Arizona 76— Parker Van Dyke was 7-10 behind the arc.

        — Omaha 85, South Dakota State 84— Mavericks hit a contested baseline jumper at the buzzer for the win.

        Quote of the Day
“I’ve loved every day I’ve been in this job, and I think there’s nothing but enormous opportunity ahead for this league. And ultimately, I realize I’m just passing through like every player who’s gone through this league and ultimately like every owner, and I feel an enormous obligation to the fans and to this greater NBA family to do my best and try my hardest every day. But that’s where 100 percent of my focus is.”
        NBA commissioner Adam Silver

        Friday’s quiz
Michael Jordan was the #3 pick in the 1984 NBA Draft; Hakeem Olajuwon was the #1 pick. Who was the #2 pick?

        Thursday’s quiz
Who was James Harden’s coach at Arizona State?

        Wednesday’s quiz
John Calipari used to coach the NBA’s Nets; he was 72-112 in 2+ seasons in New Jersey.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here….

        13) In the first 7.5 months of legalized sports gambling in New Jersey, a total of $1.63B was wagered; how much did those people also spend on restaurants/shopping while they were out gambling in the Garden State? It is time for New York State to wake up and legalize sports wagering.

        12) 76ers are a combined 1-7 against Toronto, Milwaukee and the Celtics, which doesn’t bode well for the Eastern Conference playoffs this spring.

        11) Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl odds before the Flacco trade: 60-1
Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl odds after the Flacco trade: 60-1

The guy who is the head of the Westgate SuperBook is a Broncos’ fan, by the way.

        10) Saw a video on Twitter the other day of a woman throwing a chair off a 45th story balcony along a busy downtown Toronto street; now that woman is facing charges, She is charged with mischief endangering life, mischief endangering property and common nuisance.

I’m watching this video and thinking “Why would someone do this?” Luckily, no one got hurt; if there had been a car accident and someone died, thats criminally negligent homicide, right?

        9) Golfer Matt Kuchar apparently paid his caddy $5,000 during his win at the Mayakoba Classic last fall, where he won $1.3M. Thats a 0.38% tip. Not good.

Going rate for caddies is 10% if the player wins, which obviously would be $130,000.

The caddy is not Kuchar’s normal caddy; he offered the guy an additional $15,000 later on, which the caddy (for some reason) turned down.

Weird story that basically makes Kuchar look like a cheap bastard.

        8) Lot of times, I rattle on in this space about things I think should happen, and it is just me typing stuff that has no chance of ever happening, but every once in a while……..

Late last month, the San Diego Padres informed MLB that starting in 2020, they’ll have new uniforms, and those uniforms’ main colors will be brown and gold!!!!!

This is excellent, the Padres returning to their Nate Colbert/Randy Jones roots, when they had very cool uniforms. Can’t wait to see them.

        7) Donald Trump played golf with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods couple weeks ago after not having left Washington since Thanksgiving; you know he had to have been practicing golf somewhere. Least surprising news ever: There is a golf simulator in the White House, where you can play simulated “rounds” on courses all over the world.

The new $50,000 simulator replaced an older one that President Obama used in the White House. Stressful job, the president needs an outlet to release his frustrations, and just to have fun with.

        6) San Francisco Giants signed Gerardo Parra to a minor-league deal, which could be a signal that they’re out of the Bryce Harper sweepstakes, seeing how Parra is a lefty-hitting OF, just like Harper.

        5) Oregon Ducks’ football team fired DC Jim Leavitt this week; he was making $1.75M after Willie Taggart wanted to bring him to Florida State, but Oregon boosters were mad at Taggart because he used one of their planes to fly to a job interview with FSU, so they overpaid Leavitt to prevent him from going to the Seminoles.

        4) Mississippi State DT Jeffery Simmons, projected to be a top 15-pick in the NFL Draft, suffered a knee injury during training that is thought to be a torn ACL. Simmons was already not invited to the NFL Combine; he was seen on video in 2016 striking a woman.

        3) Utah’s great point guard John Stockton missed a total of 22 games in his entire 19-year career, so I’m guessing he didn’t need “maintenance days” when the Jazz had games on consecutive nights.

        2) Unusual fact that annoys me a little; I pay for the NBA Full Court package, so I can see every NBA game live, but when games are re-broadcast late at night, those games get blacked out on the local cable channels, except for Knicks/Nets and anything on NBA TV. Since I’m paying a decent amount of money, shouldn’t I be able to watch those replays?

I do not have the NHL package, but their late night replays aren’t blacked out, I can watch any of those games I want to- it makes no sense. Too bad I like basketball better than hockey.

        1) Last three NFL teams who appeared on HBO’s Hard Knocks went a combined 16-31-1 that season; all three of those coaches have been fired, two during the season where they were on Hard Knocks. Of course, those two coaches were also breaking in rookie QB’s that year.

This year, looks like the final five are: Lions, Redskins, Raiders, Giants, 49ers. We’ll be seeing a lot of one of those teams next summer on HBO, and I’m guessing they’re saving the Raiders for 2020, when they move to Las Vegas.

          • Matthews heads back to the desert and this weekend's NHL odds and analysis
            Monty Andrews

Looking for some mid-February fireworks? The Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes might have what you need as they renew acquaintances as part of a fun-filled weekend of hockey. This weekend's docket includes Auston Matthews' return to his home state, and two Metropolitan Division rivals primed for a high-scoring affair in Pennsylvania. Here are the top games, betting trends and tips to monitor as the NHL schedule soldiers on.

            Fillin' Those Nets

The Oilers and Hurricanes don't have much of a head-to-head history since squaring off in the 2006 Stanley Cup final, but their recent encounters have been fun for fans and bettors alike. Edmonton heads to Raleigh for a Friday night encounter with a 'Canes team that prevailed in seven games back in '06 for their one and only championship. The teams have combined for a whopping 29 goals in three meetings dating back to the start of the 2017-18 season – and with the Hurricanes still leading the NHL in shots on goal per game (35.5), there's a chance we'll see plenty of scoring in this one.

            Running Hot and Cold

Two teams headed in completely opposite directions will face off Saturday night at the Pepsi Center as the reeling Colorado Avalanche face the red-hot St. Louis Blues. The Avalanche entered Thursday having lost eight of their past nine games – and offensive struggles are largely to blame, with Colorado averaging just over two goals per contest in that span. The Blues, on the other hand, enter Friday on an eight-game winning streak during which they outscored the opposition 33-14. St. Louis also has a significant edge in the recent head-to-head series, having won 11 of the previous 14 meetings.

            Matthews Heads Home

Arizona's most famous hockey player returns to his roots Saturday night as Auston Matthews leads the Toronto Maple Leafs into the desert against the Coyotes. But before you throw some money on Matthews' scoring props, consider that the 2016 No. 1 pick hasn't exactly been a slam-dunk offensive option against his hometown team. Matthews has just two goals and one assist in five career games vs. the Coyotes, and was held scoreless while registering a minus-two rating in their previous encounter Jan. 20 in Toronto. Bettors might, however, want to consider John Tavares, who has nine goals in 14 games against Arizona.

            Goaltenders Beware

Something about facing the Pittsburgh Penguins has brought out the best in the New York Rangers' offense – and the worst in its goaltending. The long-time division rivals write the next chapter of their storied feud Sunday afternoon at PPG Paints Arena, and if past history is any indication, it won't be a goalies' duel. The teams have combined for seven or more goals in each of their last five head-to-head encounters, and nine of their previous 10 overall. Sidney Crosby makes for an intriguing player prop option here, having racked up 83 points in 64 career games against the Rangers.

Goalie Profile: Thomas Greiss, New York Islanders

You know we love Robin Lehner in this space, as he continues his march toward an unlikely Vezina Trophy victory. But his backup is no slouch, either – particularly since the All-Star break. Greiss has been sensational in four starts, going 3-0-1 while stopping 128 of 130 shots and recording two shutouts. His resurgence comes at a great time for the Islanders, with Lehner (2-2-0, 2.51 GAA, .911 SV%) having come down to Earth a bit since his incredible start. Their play is a significant reason why New York remains the top value play in the league, having returned +14.74 units to date.
Injury Update: David Pastrnak, Boston Bruins

The Bruins can't seem to avoid an injury to a key player – and this one is the most bizarre of all. Pastrnak was placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss the next 2-to-3 weeks after injuring his thumb during a team dinner. Pastrnak required surgery, the latest blow for a Boston team that has already had to deal with significant absences from center Patrice Bergeron, defenseman Torey Krug and netminder Tuukka Rask. Pastrnak leads the team in goals (31) and ranks second in points (66); the Bruins are a scorching 24-9-5 SU in games in which Pastrnak hits the scoresheet.

            Hat Trick Trends

The race to be the top value bet in the NHL is officially a two-team affair. The Islanders continue to hold a commanding lead on the field, but the Tampa Bay Lightning are also in the hunt at +12.45 units while being the most profitable home team at +5.94 units. No other team in the league has produced a profit of more than 5.51 units through Thursday's games.

Similarly, the competition for worst value play in the league is down to a few teams. 21-28-8 New Jersey (-12.78 units) and Colorado (-12.22) bring up the rear, with the Florida Panthers next in line at -8.22. The Anaheim Ducks (-8.20) are the only other team to have lost eight or more units to date.

The Art Ross Trophy race remains close – and oddsmakers are loathe to pick one favorite, with Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov and Edmonton's Connor McDavid the co-No. 1 options at +120 as of Thursday. Kucherov leads the league with 92 points, seven more than Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and 10 clear of McDavid. Kane is the No. 3 choice at +175 as of Thursday; no other player is higher than +2,000.

              • Niederreiter helps Canes dump Oilers, 3-1
                February 15, 2019
                By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Jaroslav Halak made 30 saves in his fourth shutout of the season, and the Boston Bruins beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-0 on Friday night for their fourth consecutive victory.

Noel Acciari and Jake DeBrusk scored for the Bruins, who have earned at least a point in nine consecutive games. Chris Wagner added an empty-netter with 1:31 remaining.

Kevin Boyle made 26 saves for the Ducks, who have lost 20 of their past 23 games.

                DEVILS 5, WILD 4, OT

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Nico Hischier scored 3:19 into overtime and Cory Schneider got his first win in nearly 14 months as New Jersey rallied for the victory.

Hischier, Marcus Johansson and Kyle Palmieri each had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who won for the second time in eight games. Will Butcher and Ben Lovejoy also scored.

Schneider had 15 saves in relief, including three in overtime. He allowed five goals Thursday in Chicago and was 0-17-4 since his last win on Dec. 27, 2017.

Mikael Granlund and Brad Hunt each had a goal and an assist for Minnesota, which dropped to 1-4-3 in its past eight games. Joel Eriksson Ek and Nick Seeler also scored, and Ryan Suter had two assists.

                HURRICANES 3, OILERS 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Nino Niederreiter scored two goals for Carolina, and Curtis McElhinney stopped the final 40 shots he faced.

Lucas Wallmark also scored and Sebastian Aho had two assists for the Hurricanes, who have won 15 of 21 since Dec. 31 for the best record in the NHL in that span. Carolina moved a point behind idle Pittsburgh for the final wild-card playoff spot in the East.

Leon Draisaitl scored his team-leading 34th goal on the Oilers' first shot, and Mikko Koskinen stopped 24 shots while losing his sixth straight decision. Edmonton is 1-7-2 in its last 10.

McElhinney improved to 7-0-0 against Edmonton - his best career record against any opponent.

                RANGERS 6, SABRES 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Rookie Alexandar Georgiev stopped 31 shots, including 13 in the final period, and the Rangers rolled to the road win.

Vladislav Namestnikov scored twice in the final four minutes, while also adding an assist. Jesper Fast and Boo Nieves staked New York to a 2-0 lead in the first period, and Jimmy Vesey and Pavel Buchnevich also scored.

New York improved to 8-5-1 in its past 14 and earned its 58th point to move into 12th in the Eastern Conference standings.

Buffalo squandered a chance to close the gap on idle Pittsburgh in the race for the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff spot. The Sabres have 63 points and remain four behind the Penguins.

Jeff Skinner scored twice for Buffalo, including his team-leading 36th.

                    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

                    13) Sitting in the front row at basketball games seems fun and all, but it can be dangerous, too.

Thursday night in New York, Joel Embiid leaped into the stands after a loose ball, just barely clearing actress Regina King, but he did crash feet-first into Dave Fried, the MSG Network statistician working next to broadcaster Mike Breen. Fried was OK; he worked the Houston-UConn game in Hartford Thursday night.

Few years ago, Lebron James crashed into golfer Jason Day’s wife and she got hurt; these are really big guys and you have to pay attention if you’re that close to the action.

                    12) Rick Pitino is coaching pro ball in Greece this year; Pitino’s Panathinaikos team was up 40-25 at halftime in the semifinals of the Greek Cup, when the Olympiakos team went home and refused to play the second half, protesting the officiating in the first half.

Seriously, they didn’t play the second half because they were mad at the refs. Olympiakos is coached by former Cavaliers’ coach David Blatt.

I’m anxious to see if either UCLA or UNLV makes a run at hiring Pitino this spring.

                    11) Jamal Crawford is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer (19,218 points) amongst guys who never made an All-Star Game.

                    10) ACC is going to a 20-game conference schedule next year, to coincide with the start of the new ACC Network. Big money leagues are expanding their conference schedules to try and lock the mid-major schools from getting at-large bids to the NCAA’s.

                    9) It makes me laugh when I see major league hitters batting off a tee at the start of spring training. Understood that you start with the basics every year, but it just looks funny.

                    8) New Orleans Pelicans are firing GM Dell Demps, not really sure why. is it his fault that the Pelicans’ star player doesn’t want to be in New Orleans anymore?

Wonder if he’d still have his job if he had traded Anthony Davis to the Lakers?

                    7) Detroit Lions cut safety Glover Quin, who started every game for Detroit since 2013.

                    6) Pac-12 has only one team ranked in the KenPom top 50, and if Washington falters down the stretch, then the Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas becomes like a mid-major event, where the only team going to the NCAA’s is the winner of the tournament.

                    5) Yale 70, Columbia 64— Bulldogs lead Harvard/Cornell by a game in Ivy League; Princeton leads Penn by a game for 4th place and last spot in the Ivy’s postseason tournament.

                    4) Georgia State 90, South Alabama 81— Jaguars led by 14 at half, but lost for 8th time in last 11 games. Teams combined to go 27-66 on the arc.

                    3) We mentioned the other day how golfer Matt Kuchar gave his caddy $5,000 after he won a PGA event in Mexico last year; he finally ponied up $50,000 to the guy this week, which is still less than a 5% tip (standard rate for a caddy when the player wins is 10%).

                    2) Jameis Winston helped me win some picks when he was at Florida State, so I’ve pretty much ignored his antics since, but if I was a Bucs’ fan now, having Winston as the franchise QB would make me queasy, after reading some quotes from him that kind of blamed Dirk Koetter and his coaches for Winston’s struggles in the NFL.

If Winston doesn’t thrive under Bruce Arians, a noted QB guru, then what? Arians is going to speak the truth, probably less diplomatically than Koetter did. Can Winston take being coached hard? And at some point, do his off-field issues suggest a lack of character?

Winston has a 21-33 W-L record in four years for the Buccaneers; Arians will be his 3rd HC in five years.

                    1) Five people died Friday in a shooting in Aurora, IL, at a trucking company.

Last year in our country, there were 323 mass shootings in 365 days. I’ll just leave that number there, and let you draw your own conclusions.

The winning streak is St. Louis' longest since also winning nine in a row from Oct. 15-Nov. 5, 2002.

The Blues outshot Colorado 25-19 through the first two periods, but couldn't get one past Semyon Varlamov until Tarasenko broke through with his 25th goal at 4:01 of the third.

After Colorado nearly scored at the other end, Sanford scored on an ensuing odd-man rush, tipping Oskar Sundqvist's pass past Varlamov at 4:58 for his seventh of the season. Tarasenko also assisted on the goal.
