Bruins snap Blackhawks' 7-game win streak
February 12, 2019
By The Associated Press
BOSTON (AP) David Krejci, Danton Heinen and Brad Marchand each scored during a four-minute span at the end of the first period and the Boston Bruins beat the Blackhawks 6-3 on Tuesday night to snap Chicago's seven-game winning streak.
Krejci scored again in the third period, when Marchand picked up his third assist, to help the Bruins win for the fifth time in six games. Jake DeBrusk and Heinen each had a goal and two assists, and Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots for Boston. Peter Cehlarik also scored for Boston, and Patrice Bergeron had a pair of assists.
Collin Delia made 31 saves, and Alex DeBrincat and Duncan Keith scored for Chicago, which hadn't lost since Jan. 17. Patrick Kane had an assist for the 14th straight game, tying Stan Mikita for the longest assist streak in the history of the Original Six franchise.
The Bruins have not lost in regulation in eight games.
STARS 3, PANTHERS 0
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Anton Khudobin recorded his second shutout of the season and Tyler Seguin had two goals and an assist as Dallas topped Florida.
Esa Lindell also scored, and Alexander Radulov had two assists for Dallas, which snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the sixth time in eight games.
With Stars goalie Ben Bishop out, Khudobin made his third consecutive start, stopping 30 shots and winning for just the second time in six starts. It was the eighth shutout of Khudobin's career.
Roberto Luongo recorded 16 saves for Florida, which lost its second straight, both at home at the start of a seven-game homestand. The Panthers were shut out for the first time this season - the last team in the NHL to be blanked.
LIGHTNING 6, FLAMES 3
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - NHL points leader Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists, Brayden Point added a goal and two assists, and Tampa Bay doubled up Calgary.
Kucherov has 88 points, including seven over his last two games. Kucherov and Point (72) are the second pair of Tampa Bay teammates to reach 70 points in 57 team games. Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier did it in 2006-07.
Cedric Paquette, Anthony Cirelli, Yanni Gourde and Steven Stamkos also scored for the NHL-leading Lightning, who are 5-0-2 over the last seven games. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 19 saves.
Calgary, 1-3-1 in its last five games, got two goals from Sean Monahan. Mark Giordano had the other Flames goal, and David Rittich stopped 21 shots.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jack Eichel set up two goals in leading Buffalo to a win over Metropolitan Division-leading New York.
Jason Pominville scored the go-ahead goal 6:49 into the second period. Jeff Skinner scored off a faceoff draw won by Eichel, and Johan Larsson sealed the victory with 2:25 left. Linus Ullmark stopped 24 shots to improve to 3-0-1 in his past four starts.
The Sabres improved to 3-2-1 six games into a seven-game homestand. Overall, Buffalo improved to 28-21-7 and picked up its 63rd point, one more than last season.
Casey Cizikas scored for the Islanders, who had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost in regulation for just the second time in 13 games (9-2-2). Robin Lehner stopped 19 shots in dropping to 13-3-1 in his past 17 starts.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Alex Pietrangelo and Ivan Barbashev each scored twice and St. Louis won its seventh straight game.

Rookie Jordan Binnington made 20 saves to win his sixth straight start, becoming the second goalie in Blues history with a winning streak of at least six games. Brent Johnson twice won seven in a row in 2000 and 2001.
Pavel Zacha, Kyle Palmieri and Mirco Mueller scored for the Devils, who have lost 10 straight to St. Louis.
St. Louis' Vladimir Tarasenko had two assists, extending his point streak to a career-high nine games (seven goals, seven assists).

Wednesday’s List of 13: A snowy list of mid-week musings…….
13) We talk now and then about the football handicapping contests in Las Vegas, the best one being at the Westgate SuperBook, and another really good one at the Golden Nugget.
Signups for the Golden Nugget contest start March 8, $1,000 an entry; you pick seven games a week, college or NFL. Each person can have three entries. Seems like football season just ended; oh wait, it did…….
More and more of these contests are going to pop up around the country, as legalized gambling spreads. Good way to get people in the door of your casino.
12) Cleveland Browns signed former Chiefs’ RB Kareem Hunt, who got into trouble with the NFL after he got into a scuffle with his girlfriend in a hotel last fall, a scuffle that was captured on camera.
11) Jacob deGrom informed the Mets that he will not negotiate a new deal during the season; deGrom’s camp has set Opening Day as the deadline to complete any potential long-term deal.
deGrom can become a free-agent after the 2020 season; he wants a contract that would buy out his remaining arbitration year and extend his agreement with the Mets long term.
10) You can wager one of these four teams (Duke, Michigan, Gonzaga and Kansas) to win the national title at -$125 vs the field (+105). Interesting wager. Gonzaga/Kansas have injury issues, but someone is going to have to beat Duke for you, if you play the field.
9) Surprising fact; according to Wikipedia, El Paso has 683,577 citizens; Boston has 685,094. Wouldn’t have thought that.
8) In case you were wondering, Las Vegas sportsbooks took $145,939,025 in bets on the Super Bowl, 2nd-most of all time; the bettors lost $10,780,319 on those wagers.
7) Atlanta Falcons added former Chiefs’ DC Bob Sutton to its stuff, to help coach Dan Quinn with game management. Quinn is expected to run the Falcons’ defense next year.
6) TCU basketball coach Jamie Dixon grew up in the Los Angeles area; when was a kid, he starred in several TV commercials, including ads for Volvo, Rice Krispies, Mattel and Bud Light.
5) AAF’s Memphis Express signed QB JaMarcus Russell, who last played in the NFL in 2009; he went 7-18 as a starter in three years with the Oakland Raiders. Memphis got shut out in its AAF opener; they could use some help, but I’m not sure if Russell will help.
4) A’s signed oft-injured lefty starter Brett Anderson; it’ll be his third stint with Oakland.
3) Virginia 69, North Carolina 61— Solid road win for the Cavaliers Monday night, 48 hours after they lost at home to Duke.
2) Nine of 32 NFL teams will have new offensive coordinators next season.
Rich Scangarello is he new OC in San Francisco; he’s made coaching stops at Carleton (2001), Milsaps (’10-’11), Northern Arizona (’12-’14), Wagner (’16). Not exactly football hotbeds.
1) Understood that Kyler Murray is free to choose his own career path, but when a team pays you $210,000 like the A’s did for basically doing nothing, you owe them a phone call or a text to clue them in on your decision before you go in the other direction.
It is common courtesy; Murray’s advisors made him look bad Monday.

Boyle gets shutout, Ducks top Canucks 1-0 in Murray's debut
February 14, 2019
By The Associated Press
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Kevin Boyle made 35 saves in his first career start and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Vancouver Canucks 1-0 Wednesday night in general manager Bob Murray's first game as interim coach.
Jakob Silfverberg scored to help the Ducks end a seven-game losing streak, a skid which prompted Murray to fire coach Randy Carlyle on Sunday and take over for the rest of the season.
Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves for the Canucks, who have lost four straight road games.
The 64-year-old Murray had never coached professionally at any level but got the response he had been looking for, with Silfverberg scoring 6:30 into the first period to give the Ducks their first lead since getting the opening goal in a 5-1 loss at St. Louis on Jan. 23.
PENGUINS 3, OILERS 1
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Murray robbed Connor McDavid on a penalty shot for one of his 38 saves as Pittsburgh beat struggling Edmonton.
Bryan Rust, Teddy Blueger and Jared McCann all scored as Pittsburgh picked up two vital points despite playing without suspended center Evgeni Malkin, forced to sit while serving a one-game suspension for an illegal high stick. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby finished with one assist and spent large portions of the night going head to head with McDavid.
McDavid picked up an assist on Leon Draisaitl's first-period goal but was otherwise held in check. Mikko Koskinen stopped 31 shots for the Oilers but couldn't stop Edmonton from falling for the eighth time in nine games.

Armadillo: Thursday's Den: We’re changing things a little, starting today…….
Starting today, we’re starting something different here, something that hopefully you like and hopefully something that won’t drive me crazy.
I’ll post a selection EVERY DAY going forward, whether it be a college game, an NBA game, a futures bet or even an NHL or AAF game. Picks will be posted by noon each day.
Only exceptions will be during the baseball All-Star break, and the short time in October between the end of baseball season and the beginning of the NBA.
Been debating this for several months, but Wednesday, while shoveling snow (oddly enough) I decided that this was the way to go. So if this doesn’t go well, blame my snowplow guy, who for some reason, is on vacation this week.
Wrapping up college hoop games the last two nights…….
13) Duke 71, Louisville 69— Cardinals led by 23 with 9:20 left, then collapsed down stretch, turning ball over nine times from that point on as Duke ratcheted up their pressure.
Chris Mack has some serious psychology work ahead of him the rest of this week.
12) Nets 148, Cavaliers 139, 3OTs— D’Angelo Russell scored 28 of the Nets’ 39 points in the OT’s; he had only 8 points in regulation. Kenny Atkinson is doing a great job to have the Nets a 29-29 with two of his best players missing large chunks of the season with injuries.
Jordan Clarkson scored 42 for Cleveland in this game, and he didn’t start.
11) Miami 65, Clemson 64— Hurricanes tore Clemson’s heart out, hitting an off-balance jumper with 0:00.4 left for the unlikely win. Tigers had fought their way into being “in” projections of the Field of 68, but this bad loss likely drops them back out.
10) Kansas State 71, Texas 64:
Texas coach Shaka Smart to his team during a first half timeout: “This is a basketball game against a team we’re better than!!!”
Well, maybe not. K-State is 19-5, 9-2 in the league; Texas is 14-11, 6-6 in the league. You tell me which team is better.
Matthew McConaughey was sitting on the end of the Longhorns’ bench, which I’m assuming is legal, since its not the first time he’s done it, but since when do boosters sit on the bench during the freakin’ game?
9) Western Kentucky basketball coach Rick Stansbury will miss Thursday, Saturday games this week; he is having back surgery Friday. Assistant coach Mark Hsu, who served as interim coach in Stansbury’s place last week, will continue in that role.
8) LSU 73, Kentucky 71— Outstanding game ended on an LSU tip-in at the buzzer, that was really close to being offensive goaltending. Two very good, young teams; this game had a March feel to it.
7) Xavier 64, Creighton 61 OT— Bluejays lose third straight game, two of them in OT. Xavier ends a 6-game losing streak.
6) UCLA 75, California 67, OT— Bruins were down 7 at half, came back and kept Golden Bears winless in Pac-12 play. Last Pac-12 team to go 0-18 in conference was Oregon State 11 years ago, but league was a hell of a lot better then than it is now.
5) St Bonaventure 76, St Joe’s 51—Bonnies won for 4th time in last six games, climb over .500 (6-5) in the A-14- they’ve won their last four road games.
Coach Mark Schmidt has now tied Larry Weise for the most coaching wins in St Bonaventure history, with 202, and he did it on his birthday, which is nice.
4) Ole Miss 60, Auburn 55— Rebels were 13-33 on arc, only 6-18 inside arc, which is weird. Auburn was 5-20 on arc, which is how upsets happen.
3) Quinnipiac 98, Rider 88 OT— Rider just played three games in five nights and lost all three, the first two by 1-2 points, then this; they led this game by 9 with 0:49 left, by 7 with 0:24 left.
2) There was a big NFL trade Wednesday; Ravens traded Joe Flacco to Denver, for what is expected to be a 4th round pick in April’s draft.
Flacco was a Raven for 11 years, winning Super Bowl XLVII; he was 96-67 as a starter, 10-5 in playoff games, so a very productive Raven.
By way of comparison, Eli Manning is 116-114 as a starter, 8-4 in playoff games; I’ve never heard anyone suggest that Flacco is a Hall of Famer, so why would Manning be one?
Ravens-Broncos do not play next season, which is too bad for the NFL’s schedule makers.
1) Then there is Case Keenum, who could be playing for his 4th team in four years in 2019, as he dashes towards the Ryan Fitzpatrick career path.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
The St. Louis Blues fired their coach earlier in the season and appeared to be dead in the water. A lengthy slump at any point of the season in the Western Conference usually means you can sound the death knell. However, the West is not as deep as in the past, and it might only take 85-90 points to qualify for the postseason when teams in the past have missed with so many more. The Blues travel to Arizona on Thursday, putting a seven-game winning streak on the line. They're 5-0 in their past five road games, too, and 4-0 in the past four as a favorite.
The Coyotes haven't been a pushover this season, but lately they're starting leak oil. Arizona has won just two of the past seven games overall, and they're 2-5 in the past seven as an underdog, too. At home, the Coyotes have managed to scratch out just five of their past 18 games, and they're 3-8 in the past 11 as a home 'dog, too. To make matters worse for Arizona, the favorite is 21-5 in the past 26 meetings in this series, with St. Louis 9-2 in their past 11 trips to the desert and 19-7 in the past 26 overall. If you like parlays (and really, who doesn't?), the 'over' has connected in seven of the past nine meetings in this series.
Looking Ahead
Thursday, Feb. 14
Dallas at Tampa Bay: The Stars are coming off a 3-0 road victory against the Florida Panthers, as G Anton Khudobin stopped all 30 shots he faced in that one on Tuesday. Now, he'll have a much bigger test against the high-octane Lightning. He is 2-1-1 with a 1.76 goals-against average with a .947 save percentage across his past four outings since the All-Star break. The Stars have won six of their past eight games overall, but they're 0-4 in the past four meetings with the Lightning and 2-5 in their past seven trips to Tampa. The 'over' is also 14-3 in the past 17 in this series, with the over hitting in each of the past seven played on the Suncoast.
Washington at San Jose: The Capitals and Sharks could very well be a potential Stanley Cup Finals preview, although the Caps have shown signs of mediocrity lately. The Caps have won four in a row against Western Conference teams, although they're just 4-10 in the past 14 games overall. They're also 1-4 in the past five as a road 'dog, and 0-4 in the past four overall on the road. Washington has won just once in the past eight games against teams with a winning overall record, too.
For San Jose, they're 6-0 in the past six as a home favorite, while cashing in five in a row against Metropolitan Division foes. They have also won seven of the past eight against teams with a winning overall mark. The Sharks have connected in 10 of their past 12 games as a favorite, while going 17-4 in the past 21 following a victory. SAP Center has also been difficult for opponents, as the Sharks are 40-19 in the past 59 on home ice. To make matters worse, All-Star D Erik Karlsson (groin) could potentially return after eight games out.
Friday, Feb. 15
Boston at Anaheim: The Ducks surprised the Canucks on Wednesday night by a 1-0 score. It wasn't terribly surprising that they won in interim coach/general manager Bob Murray's debut behind the bench, but it was surprising that Kevin Boyle was able to post a shutout in his first NHL start. He is likely to get the starting nod again with John Gibson (head) on the Injured Reserve list, and Chad Johnson also sidelined. It will be interesting to see if Boyle can do it again versus one of the top offenses in the Eastern Conference.
Saturday, Feb. 16
Calgary at Pittsburgh: The Flames roll into the Steel City looking to be mightier than the Pens. Pittsburgh has actually been pretty solid against the Western Conference, going 7-4 in the past 11 against the West. The Flames have likely had this one circled on their calendars for a while after being emasculated by the Pens in Calgary by a 9-1 count back on Oct. 25. The Flames enter this one 6-3 in the past nine vs. Eastern Conference clubs.
St. Louis at Colorado: The Blues and Avalanche hook up for the third time this season, and each of the previous two meetings have resulted in St. Louis wins in overtime. That includes the most recent matchup on Dec. 14 in Denver. It's par for the course for the Avalanche, as they have dropped eight straight in overtime dating back to Nov. 18.
Montreal at Tampa Bay: The Lightning were expected to be a contender this season, and they're certainly championship caliber and among the favorites to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup. The Canadiens are a surprise contender in the Eastern Conference, hanging around in the playoff picture and exceeding expectations. If they're to get over the hump, they need to beat the good teams, though. They're 0-2 in the first two meetings with the Lightning this season, including a 6-5 loss on Dec. 29 in Tampa. The Habs are 1-6 in the past seven against the Lightning, last winning in Tampa on April 1, 2017.
Nashville at Vegas: The Predators are certainly not fazed by the Golden Knights. They have won both of the previous meetings this season, and three in a row overall in the series. They have outscored Vegas 7-2 in that three-game run, including a 2-1 win on Jan. 23 at T-Mobile Arena right before the All-Star break. Each of the past four meetings in this series have cashed the 'under', too.
Sunday, Feb. 17
Washington at Anaheim: The Capitals and Ducks will tangle in Southern California. The Ducks have had a difficult time of it against the Eastern Conference, going 1-9-2 in the past 12 against the East heading into Friday's battle against the Bruins. Oddly enough, they were able to beat the defending champs by a 6-5 count in D.C. in the first meeting back on Dec. 2, and that was during a six-game road winning streak against Eastern Conference teams. Can they sweep the Caps for a signature win?
