Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

      13) Tulsa 88, UConn 80— Both head coaches got tossed at the same time in this game, which doesn’t happen a whole lot. Don’t think I’ve ever heard of it before.

Tulsa led 61-47 with 11:19 left in the game when the refs lost control of things; the delay wound up being 6-7 minutes, with both coaches pleading their cases to stay on the bench, but the refs clearly had enough of listening to them.

Tulsa was 26-36 on foul line in this game, Huskies 12-15.

      12) Iowa State 68, Texas Tech 64— Kansas’ top two challengers in the Big X hooked up here; these are two really good teams. This easily could’ve been an Elite 8 or Final Four game.

Cyclones led 41-33 at halftime; they didn’t turn ball over once the whole half.

      11) St John’s 81, Creighton 66— Bluejays are in top 5 in country in 3-point shooting, but were just 11-35 in this game, and they lost their 4th game in a row. Ponds scored 22 for St John’s after he missed the Red Storm’s last game

      10) South Carolina 74, Vanderbilt 71— Commodores led 68-63 with 1:38 left before a technical foul for taunting on Vandy helped swing this foul-filled game, where both teams took 35+ foul shots.

Gamecocks are a surprising 4-0 in SEC, after a 5-7 pre-conference record; their bench outscored Vandy’s subs 28-12.

      9) Illinois State 59, Southern Illinois 58— Redbirds blew a 16-point second half lead, then outscored SIU 8-5 over final 4:55 for the win. State’s last three games were decided by a total of five points.

      8) Drake 69, Bradley 52— Homestanding Braves went 5-33 in first half of this game; they’re now 0-5 in MVC, despite being one of most experienced teams in league.

      7) Upsets of the Week:
      Tuesday:
      — Wake Forest (+9.5) 71, NC State 67
      — Central Michigan (+7) 78, Northern Illinois 69
      — St Joe’s (+5) 61, Davidson 60
      — Kent State (+5) 66, Ohio U 52
      — LSU (+5) 83, Ole Miss 69

      Wednesday:
      — Kansas State (+6.5) 74, Oklahoma 61
      — George Washington (+6) 59, LaSalle 56
      — Iowa State (+5) 68, Texas Tech 64
      — South Carolina (+5) 74, Vanderbilt 71

      6) Warriors 142, Nuggets 111— Golden State scored 51 points in the first QUARTER.

      5) Nevada 72, Boise State 71— Red flag for the Wolf Pack, who were life/death here after losing at New Mexico earlier this month. Nevada isn’t playing that well away from Reno- they take bad shots.

      4) Iowa 89, Penn State 82— Iowa ended this game on an 8-0 run. Nittany Lions are 0-7 in conference; their coach got suspended for a game for shoving a player during a timeout. Sounds like they’re not having much fun.

      3) Campbell 70, NC-Asheville 53— Camels get a win on a Wednesday (Hump Day).

      2) Temple 85, East Carolina 74— Owls are quietly 14-3 this season, 4-1 in AAC.

      1) Nets 145, Rockets 142 OT— James Harden scored 57-58 points in his last two games.

          • In the Crease - Week 17
            Joe Williams

            Toothless Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks are fading fast, going 0-8-4 across the past 12 games. Despite the ugly skid they're still just two points behind the Edmonton Oilers for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference with plenty of time to turn things around. In the past they're slide and 47 points through 47 games might be a death knell, but the last few playoff spots in the West this season might go to teams with point totals slightly lower than we've seen in recent seasons. The road trip continues at Minnesota on Thursday, at New Jersey on Saturday and at N.Y. Islanders on Sunday before returning home Wednesday against St. Louis to finish up before the All-Star break. If they don't break the skid then, they'll have to wait all the way until Feb. 2 due to the All-Star break, when they embark on another five-game road trip.

            Calgary...On Fire
The Calgary Flames have fired to the top of the Pacific Division with an 8-1-2 mark across the past 11 outings, although they certainly haven't done it with a lot of attention. The Flames have posted a 15-4-5 mark at home this season, but they're a respectable 15-9-0 in 24 outings away from home to lead the Western Conference in road victories. Their plus-39 goal differential is also good for second in the NHL behind only the Tampa Bay Lightning (plus-58). The Flames face the Detroit Red Wings at home on Friday, and have a quick turnaround in Edmonton on Saturday night. Head coach Bill Peters will also face his former employer, the Carolina Hurricanes, in a pair of games on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in Calgary, and Sunday, Feb. 3 in Raleigh.

            Looking Ahead

            Thursday, Jan. 17

            Toronto-Tampa Bay:
The Maple Leafs hit the road for the Sunshine State stretch against the Lightning and Florida Panthers. The public is investing heavily in the home side despite the fact the Maple Leafs are an impressive 15-6 in the past 21 road games while going 10-1 in their past 11 while playing on two or more days of rest. The Lightning will be playing in their fourth game in six days, and they're 23-6 in the past 29 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation. The public is likely backing the Lightning heavily, either straight-up or on the puck line, because of Toronto's woes in this series recently. The Leafs are 2-8 in their past 10 trips to Tampa, and 1-5 in the past six meetings overall. The 'under' is also 8-3 in the past 11 metings in this series.

            Winnipeg-Nashville:
The Jets roll into the Music City with five victories in the past six games overall, and they're 7-2 in the past nine attempts against a team with a winning overall record. In addition, Winnipeg has posted an 8-3 record across the past 11 on the road. The Predators are equally hot, going 4-0 in their past four against teams with a winning percentage over .600. Total bettors might be slapping the 'over', which is 4-0 in Smashville's past four overall and 5-2 in the past seven against the Western Conference. While the over is 8-1-2 in the past 11 road games by a team with a home winning percentage over .600, the under is 7-3-1 in the past 11 overall and 3-1-1 in the past five against winning teams. The over is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings in Nashville, and the road team has claimed four of the past five.

            Los Angeles-Dallas:
The Kings are Stars are both struggling, so something's gotta give in this one. The Kings are 2-5 in the past seven overall, while they're just 7-19 in the past 26 games away from home. For Dallas, they have dropped four of the past five overall, although they're a solid 11-4 in the past 15 against Pacific Division foes. The Kings are just 1-5 in the past six against the Stars, although the road team is 4-1 in the past five. While the under has been the play for both teams lately, going 8-2 in L.A.'s past 10, and 5-0-1 in the past six for Dallas, the 'over' is 7-3-4 in the past 14 meetings in this series.

            Friday, Jan. 18

            N.Y. Islanders-Washington:
It might be rather overlooked, but the Capitals will welcome Stanley Cup champion head coach Barry Trotz to town on Friday night. It will be his first visit to D.C. since leaving after last season's title, failing to agree to terms on a new deal after the franchise's first championship. Washington greeted him rudely on the Island in the first meeting on Nov. 26, winning 4-1 behind Braden Holtby. He has been on the shelf with an injury, so it's likely Pheonix Copley gets the starting nod. The Capitals are 0-2-1 over Copley's past three starts, getting outscored 13-4 in the process.

            Buffalo-Vancouver:
The Sabres continue their road trip against the Canucks in the Pacific Northwest, and the home side is a slight favorite over the skidding side from Buffalo. The Sabres picked up a much-needed win, and a rather impressive one, in Calgary on Wednesday. Buffalo posted a 4-3 win in overtime thanks to superstar Jack Eichel just 70 seconds into the extra session. Vancouver is looking to bounce back after a 3-2 setback against the Edmonton Oilers in a shootout on Wednesday. They're looking for revenge after losing a 4-3 shootout in Buffalo on Nov. 10 earlier in the season, too. The Canucks are 5-2-2 over their past nine at home.

            Saturday, Jan. 19

            Anaheim-New Jersey:
The Ducks and Devils will drop the puck at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday in Newark, or 10:00 a.m. PT, the local clock of the Ducks. It could be a sluggish start for a team not playing all that way lately. Anaheim enters 0-5-2 in their past seven against Eastern Conference teams, last winning in Pittsburgh of all places on Dec. 17 by a 4-2 count. They also were able to beat the Devils in a shootout by a 6-5 count back on Dec. 9, as John Gibson outdueled Cory Schneider. The Ducks lost 5-3 last season in Newark on Dec. 18, and they haven't won in New Jersey since Dec. 19, 2015.

            Philadelphia-Montreal:
The Flyers and Canadiens do battle for the first time this season, and they're set to meet three times between now and March 19. Philly might be showing signs of snapping out of their funk, winning back-to-back games Monday and Wednesday. It's the first time the Fly Guys had consecutive wins in regulation since Dec. 18-20. Their season high, accomplished once, was a three-game run from Nov. 5-10, sweeping a home-and-home with Arizona before blanking Chicago. All-Star goaltender Carey Price is back, posting a solid 18-13-4 mark with a 2.65 goals-against average and .912 save percentage as of Thursday AM. He also has three shutouts to his credit.

            Pittsburgh-Vegas:
The Golden Knights welcome the Penguins to town, and Marc-Andre Fleury will likely be in the crease for this one. Malcolm Subban started the first meeting the Steel City back on Oct. 11, as the Pens posted a 4-2 victory behind Casey DeSmith. Matt Murray will likely be holding down the fort in this one. In the only previous meeting in Sin City last season, Fleury bested Murray, his former understudy, by a 2-1 margin on Dec. 14, 2017. The 'under' is 7-2-1 across the past 10 outings heading into Saturday's showdown. On the flip side, the Pens have a 4-0 'over' mark across their past four road games heading into Friday's battle in Arizona. They have the difficult task of back-to-back desert games, while Vegas enters well rested and off since Tuesday.

                    January 17, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Mitch Marner scored a go-ahead goal late in the second period, Nazem Kadri and Patrick Marleau each had a goal and an assist, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the NHL-leading Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 on Thursday night.

Frederik Andersen stopped 36 shots, and Zach Hyman added an empty-netter for the Maple Leafs.

Brayden Point and Victor Hedman scored for Tampa Bay, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves. Nikita Kucherov, the NHL points leader with 76, had an assist after two straight games without a point.

The Lightning have a 14-point lead in the Atlantic Division over Toronto. Tampa Bay's nine-game home winning streak ended.

                    BRUINS 5, BLUES 2

BOSTON (AP) - Chris Wagner scored the go-ahead goal 5:27 into the third period, Tuukka Rask tied a Boston record with his 252nd career victory and the Bruins beat St. Louis.

Rask made 28 saves and matched the franchise mark set by Cecil ''Tiny'' Thompson, who was 252-153 with 63 ties. Rask, the 2014 Vezina Trophy winner, is 252-145-56 in 474 games with Boston.

Torey Krug, David Backes, Brad Marchand and Sean Kuraly also scored for the Bruins.

Ryan O'Reilly and Carl Gunnarsson scored for St. Louis. Blues left wing David Perron extended his NHL-leading and career-best points streak to 13 games with an assist on O'Reilly's goal.

                    DUCKS 3, WILD 0

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - John Gibson made 37 saves for his second shutout of the season, Adam Henrique and Rickard Rakell scored 11 seconds apart in the first period and Anaheim beat Minnesota to end its franchise-record 12-game losing streak.

Brian Gibbons added his second goal of the season for Anaheim, which made four trades in the previous three days. Alex Stalock allowed three goals on eight shots for the Wild before being pulled in favor of Devan Dubnyk, who stopped 15 shots after he was expected to get another night of rest.

                    JETS 5, PREDATORS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Connor Hellebuyck made 37 saves and Winnipeg beat Nashville to stay alone atop the Central Division, four points ahead of the Predators.

Brendan Lemieux scored twice, and Mason Appleton, Bryan Little and Brandon Tanev added goals to help the Jets win their fourth straight. Viktor Arvidsson scored for Nashville.

                    KINGS 2, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Dustin Brown scored a rare Los Angeles power-play goal, goalie Jack Campbell beat the team that drafted him and the Kings moved out of the NHL basement.

Brown's goal came in the first period when he deflected in a shot by Drew Doughty. Carl Hagelin added a goal in the second. Campbell made 29 saves, allowing only Esa Lindell's goal with 1:04 left and Dallas goalie Ben Bishop off for an extra skater.

                    RANGERS 4, BLACKHAWKS

NEW YORK (AP) - Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, Henrik Lundqvist moved into a tie for sixth place on the NHL victory list and New York beat Chicago.

Mats Zuccarello, Filip Chytil and Mika Zibanejad also scored to help New York win for the third time in four games after a five-game skid. Lundqvist stopped 24 shots to tie Terry Sawchuk with 445 wins.

Brandon Saad, Alex DeBrincat and Dominik Kahun scored for Chicago. The Blackhawks have lost five straight and seven of eight.

                    ISLANDERS 4, DEVILS 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Anders Lee scored twice and New York beat New Jersey for its ninth victory in 11 games.

Michael Dal Colle had his first NHL goal and Jordan Eberle also scored, Nick Leddy had two assists and Robin Lehner made 16 saves to improve to 10-1-0 in his last 11 appearances.

Andy Greene scored for New Jersey.

                        ************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                        13) Not that I’m paranoid or anything, but since 2012, Rams are 0-8 (0-2 this year) when Bill Vinovich’s crew referees their games (Saints are 5-3).

Vinovich is a good official (he’s also done the Final Four in college hoop) but would it kill the NFL to send him to the AFC game?

                        12) Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it: FOX signed Urban Meyer to be a college football analyst next season.

Meyer was an analyst on ESPN for a year before he went to Ohio State, and he was incapable of humor or laughter- I actually felt bad for the guy. We’ll see next fall if he’s lightened up at all.

                        11) Thursday night’s college hoop upsets:
                        — FIU (+12.5) 77, Western Kentucky 76
                        — Manhattan (+6) 58, St Peter’s 56
                        — Oregon (+4.5) 59, Arizona 54

                        10) Bill Belichick’s first NFL coaching job (assistant special teams coach) was with the Detroit Lions, in 1976; Also on that staff? Jerry Glanville, who went on to coach the Oilers/Falcons, one of the all-time great characters. Hard to imagine both of those guys in the same meeting.

Belichick was a special assistant with the ’75 Colts, but technically not a member of the staff.

                        9) For some reason, I became curious about this yesterday, so I looked it up. Last year, the average WNBA salary was $71,635, and this year will be closer to $75,000. The maximum veteran salary is $113,500.

                        8) Reason why VCU is a better college basketball job than most mid-majors: Rams have had 126 consecutive sellouts at home. Basketball is sports priority #1 at VCU, by far.

                        7) Sounds like Cam Newton has a chance to miss all of 2019 with shoulder issues, much like Andrew Luck missed all of 2017. If so, where do the Panthers turn for a new QB?

                        6) Former Alabama QB Jalen Hurts is taking his 26-2 record as a starting QB to Oklahoma, which should prove to be very interesting.

                        5) Speaking of Alabama’s football team, five of their assistant coaches from this past season have already found new jobs; was reading an article during bowl season- pro scouts were saying that this was Saban’s worst coaching staff in his many years with the Crimson Tide, so you wonder if guys jumped ship or got pushed overboard?

                        4) Jets’ DC Gregg Williams is now working for his ninth NFL team; he could write one hell of a book someday.

                        3) Once Oklahoma signed up Alabama transfer QB Jalen Hurts, they released backup QB Austin Kendall, who quickly bolted to West Virginia, where he will play against the Sooners next year.

                        2) Michigan Wolverines offered a college scholarship to a 7th grade QB in Michigan, which is highly unusual and even a little weird. What are the odds that Jim Harbaugh is still coaching there when the kid graduates from high school, five years from now?

                        1) Cincinnati basketball coach Mick Cronin got tossed from a game Tuesday when his team was winning; not sure I’ve ever seen that before. AAC had a rough week with its refs; Tulsa/UConn game the next night saw both head coaches get tossed at the same time, even stranger.

                              • Battle of Alberta highlights this weekend's NHL odds and analysis
                                Monty Andrews

The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are well apart in the standings, but it's been a long time since the Flames tasted victory in enemy territory. The latest chapter in the Battle of Alberta highlights this weekend's NHL slate, which includes a Vegas Golden Knights team looking to improve its puck luck against Pittsburgh, and the Arizona Coyotes looking to continue a bizarre trend in Toronto. Here are the top matchups and betting trends to monitor as we enter a fun-filled weekend on NHL ice:

                                Who Needs Rest?

Certainly not the surprising New York Islanders, who will face the host Washington Capitals on Friday – one night after cruising to a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils at Barclays Center. The Islanders have been the best team in the NHL this season when it comes to playing on the tail end of a back-to-back, having gone 6-0 SU entering Friday night's showdown with the Capitals. And it gets better: The Islanders have outscored the opposition by a combined score of 25-6 in those games despite surrendering 35.5 shots per game in that span and being outshot by an average of nine shots per contest.
                                Advantage: Oilers

The Calgary Flames are one of only three teams to have reached the 30-win plateau to date – but none of those victories have come in Edmonton. The Flames make the trip up Highway 2 this Saturday night having lost six consecutive games at Rogers Place dating back to the 2015-16 season. And the Oilers have put together some of their best defensive efforts of the past few years in those home encounters with the Flames, having limited Calgary to one or fewer goals in four of those six contests. The road team hasn't scored in the third period in four consecutive meetings between the teams.

                                Unlucky in Vegas

An incredible hot streak has made the Vegas Golden Knights a virtual lock to finish in the top-3 in the Pacific Division – but goals have been hard to come by so far this month, at least compared to the number of shots taken. The Golden Knights enter Saturday's showdown with the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins having racked up a league-high 37.1 shots per game so far in January, but they've managed just 2.71 goals per game for the month, a rate that ranks 21st out of 31 teams. Pittsburgh hasn't been nearly as unlucky, having averaged 4.29 goals in January despite ranking ninth with an average of 31.9 shots per outing.

                                Home Ice Disadvantage

Sunday night should hold special meaning to Toronto forward Auston Matthews as his Maple Leafs entertain his hometown team, the Arizona Coyotes. The visiting side is on a tear in the head-to-head series, having won four consecutive meetings and seven of the previous nine. And recent meetings haven't been all that close, with the last three encounters decided by three goals. As for bettors considering a player prop play on Matthews, he hasn't faced his native franchise all that often but has been mostly effective, with two goals and an assist in four career games vs. the Coyotes.

                                Goalie Profile

Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche: It has been a trying eight days for Varlamov, who has been torched for 16 goals over his previous four games to extend what has been a concerning stretch of subpar goaltending for the Avalanche. Colorado netminders Varlamov, Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz have combined to past an .830 save percentage in January, the worst in the league over that span. And those struggles have spoiled a strong offensive showing by the Avalanche, who are averaging 3.57 goals in January but have just two wins to show for it. On the plus side, Colorado's 26 over conversions are the most of any Central Division team.

                                Injury Update

Ryan Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg, Anaheim Ducks:
Even after ending a 12-game losing skid Thursday night in Minnesota, there's more bad news in Anaheim. The struggling Ducks will be without forwards Ryan Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg indefinitely as both players nurse lower-body injuries. It has been a dismal season for Kesler, who has just four goals, two assists and a minus-15 rating in 44 games with Anaheim this season; Silfverberg has been slightly better with 12 goals and seven assists in 42 games. Anaheim has been one of the most injury-riddled teams in the league, and it shows: The Ducks are at -5.66 units won on the season, good for 21st overall.

                                Hat Trick Trends

The tide has finally turned on road favorites following an incredibly lucrative month. Teams favored away from their home arenas have gone a dismal 4-9 SU over the past seven days, good for a 30.8-percent success rate. Home favorites have also cashed in less often than expected over that stretch, winning SU just 57.1 percent of the time (20-11-4).

Bettors looking for a totals edge didn't find one this past week. The Overs and Unders have been split right down the middle over the previous seven days, with each outcome converting 24 times. The under is still king over the past 30 days, converting at a 53.9 percent clip, while the season to date has seen 349 under results compared to 343 overs.

While totals play was a 50-50 proposition this past week, one NHL official remains a terrific Under option. Graham Skilliter has provided plenty of profit for under bettors, with his games having gone 14-25 O/U to date; his -12.84 over units won are the lowest in the NHL. Teams are averaging just 5.48 total goals in the games he has worked.
