  • Sunday’s 6-pack

    — North Dakota State (Carson Wentz’s alma mater) won its 7th I-AA football title in the last eight years.

    — Bronx signed reliever Zach Britton to a three-year, $39M deal

    — Tampa Bay Rays are going to shut down their upper deck, reduce seating capacity to around 25,500; will the Rays be heading to Montreal soon?

    — Blazers 110, Rockets 101— Harden scored 38 points, but it wasn’t enough.

    — Warriors 127, Kings 123— Curry scored 42; Golden St was down 7 after third quarter.

    — ESPN’s Seth Greenberg called Michigan St’s Cassius Winston the best passer in country.

    Quote of the Day
“You can shear a sheep many times, but you can skin him only once.”
    Old proverb

    Sunday’s quiz
Who was Dallas Cowboys’ coach before Jason Garrett?

    Saturday’s quiz
Matt Nagy, Jay Gruden are the two NFL head coaches who used to play QB in Arenaball.

    Friday’s quiz
There are 15 basketball teams are in the ACC, with Notre Dame a basketball-only member.

    Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

    13) Colts 21, Texans 7— Indy was 9-14 on third down, Houston was 3-13. Colts scored TD’s on three of first four four drives, going 70-75-65 yards for scores. 76 of Texans’ 105 rushing yards were gained by QB Watson, who completed only 29-49 passes- not his best effort.

Colts head to Arrowhead next weekend; winner of Charger-Raven game will visit Foxboro.

    12) Cowboys 24, Seahawks 22— Dallas ran ball for 164 yards, ran 16 more plays than Seattle, held Seahawks to 11 first downs. Elliott ran for 137 yards; giving him last week off looks like a really good idea now.

Dallas heads to New Orleans if the Bears win Sunday; they head to Los Angeles if the Eagles pull the upset in Chicago.

    11) San Francisco 49ers had a lot of injuries the last two years; scapegoat for those injuries is strength coach Ray Wright, who was fired this week. Wright had been with coach Kyle Shanahan in both Houston/Washington, so doubtful it was Shanahan who made this decision.

    10) In last few years, I wonder how many times Kansas/Kentucky both lost on the same day? Jayhawks lost at Iowa State, Wildcats lost at Alabama. Go figure.

    9) New Mexico 85, Nevada 58— Wolf Pack was #6 in country, then went to Albuquerque and got eviscerated by a New Mexico squad that had lost to Penn and North Texas.

    8) St John’s 97, Georgetown 94 OT— Hoyas play lot of high-scoring games; St John’s had lost 13 straight games at Georgetown, but pulled this game out on Lou Carnesecca’s 94th birthday.

    7) Upsets of the Day:
    — Portland State (+16.5) 77, Montana 74 OT
    — East Carolina (+15) 73, Cincinnati 71
    — New Mexico (+14.5) 85, Nevada 58
    — Southern Utah (+13.5) 90, Weber State 82 OT
    — South Carolina (+13) 71, Florida 69
    — Northern Arizona (+9.5) 81, Idaho State 69
    — LaSalle (+8.5) 69, UMass 60
    — Rice (+7.5) 78, Louisiana Tech 66
    — Youngstown State (+7.5) 76, Milwaukee 51
    — Western Carolina (+7.5) 76, Samford 69

    6) Quite a night in the Big Sky Conference; underdogs went 4-1 vs spread, three of the five games went OT, and three underdogs of 9.5+ points won SU. Competitive league.

    5) Odd fact of the day; There are ten players who won a Super Bowl ring and also played on a Grey Cup champ in the CFL. One guy won both and also won a title in the XFL’s only year of existence— Bobby Singh.

    4) Miami Dolphins were 7-1 this season in games decided by 8 or fewer points; they were 0-8 in games decided by more than eight points.

    3) Dallas (9-3), Steelers (6-5-1) and Giants (4-8) played most games decided by one score; New England (3-2) played the fewest.

    2) Former Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury is the new OC at USC, but Trojans are blocking him from interviewing for NFL jobs, so there rumors that he may quit so he can do the interviews.

    1) A gambler at the Hollywood Charlestown sportsbook in West Virginia played $5 on a 15-team parlay last week, and when all 15 teams he picked beat the spread, the guy won $100,000, not a bad weekend. It is really, really hard to go 15-0 in one day.

            • Kuemper, Garland help Coyotes beat Rangers 5-0
              January 6, 2019
              By The Associated Press

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Rookie Conor Garland scored twice, Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves for his first shutout of the season and 12th overall and the Arizona Coyotes beat the New York Rangers 5-0 on Sunday to end a three-game losing streak.

Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and two assists, and Mario Kempe and Clayton Keller also scored to help give coach Rick Tocchet his 100th NHL victory. The Coyotes won for the second time in their last nine home games.

Galchenyuk has 10 points in his last eight games, and Garland has three goals in his last two games and five in his last seven. Garland was recalled from Tucson of the American Hockey League early last month.

New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist stopped 27 of 32 shots before being replaced by Alexander Georgiev with 3:22 left in the second period. Lundqvist also was pulled in his last start, a 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh, on Wednesday night.

The Rangers have been outscored 18-3 while losing three straight games and have lost six of eight and nine of 12. They were shut out for the third time this season.

              CAPITALS 3, RED WINGS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Michal Kempny scored with 3:52 remaining, and Washington beat Detroit to snap a three-game losing streak.

Tom Wilson and Travis Boyd also scored for the Capitals, who overcame another fruitless night for their power play and improved to 9-0-2 in their last 11 games against Detroit. Anthony Mantha and Filip Hronek scored for the Red Wings.

The Capitals trailed 2-1 heading into the final period, but Boyd tied it off a pass from Alex Ovechkin. Goalie Jimmy Howard nearly made the save sliding from right to left, but the puck made it through. Kempny's winner came on a wrist shot from the blue line that sailed through traffic.

              GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3, DEVILS 2

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Max Pacioretty broke a tie with 4:14 left in the second period and Malcolm Subban made 36 saves in his first home start since March 30 to help Vegas beat New Jersey.

Set up in front of the net, Pacioretty redirected Shea Theodore's shot from the point past goalie Keith Kincaid. After missing seven games because of a lower-body injury, Pacioretty also had the winner Friday night in his return at Anaheim.

Ryan Reaves added his career-high eighth goal, and Brayden McNabb scored his first goal of the season. Vegas overcame a 2-0 deficit to improve to 17-3-3 since Nov. 21.

Nico Hischier and Ben Lovejoy scored for New Jersey.

              HURRICANES 5, SENATORS 4

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Justin Williams broke a tie with a power-play goal at 7:34 of the third period and Carolina beat Ottawa for its fourth straight victory and Senators' eighth loss in a row.

Justin Faulk and Brock McGinn each had a goal and an assist, Jaccob Slavin and Dougie Hamilton also scored, and Petr Mrazek made 27 saves.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau tied it at 4 in his return from a torn Achilles. Rudolfs Balcers scored his first NHL goal, and Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel also scored.

              JETS 5, STARS 1

INNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Kyle Connor ended a 10-game pointless streak with a goal to help Winnipeg beat Dallas.

Adam Lowry, Tyler Myers, Bryan Little and Josh Morrissey, with an empty-net goal, also scored. Morrissey added an assist, Jacob Trouba had two, and Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves. The Jets rebounded from a 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday night.

Alexander Radulov had a power-play goal for the Stars. They lost for the first time in regulation in their last six games (4-1-1).

Blackhawks end Penguins' winning streak at 8 games
              January 6, 2019

PITTSBURGH (AP) Dylan Strome broke a tie 1:48 into the third period and the Chicago Blackhawks beat Pittsburgh 5-3 on Sunday night to end the Penguins' winning streak at eight games.

Strome scored seconds after a power-play expired, beating fallen goalie Casey DeSmith off a pass from Patrick Kane. Jonathan Toews added an empty-net goal and had an assist to run his points streak to six games.

Alex DeBrincat scored on a power play for his 19th of the season, and Chris Kunitz and Duncan Keith both scored their first for the Blackhawks. They won their 10th straight against the Penguins, including five straight in Pittsburgh. The Blackhawks haven't lost to the Penguins since March 30, 2014, in Pittsburgh.

Chicago snapped a two-game skid and has won three of five and six of nine following an eight-game losing streak in November.

Kane had three assists. He's the 20th player in NHL history and the first American-born skater to begin his career with at least 12 straight seasons with 30-plus assists. Cam Ward stopped 31 shots.

Jake Guentzel, Patric Hornqvist and Derick Brassard scored for the Penguins, and DeSmith stopped 26 shots.

Pittsburgh scored twice in the first 4:33.

Hornqvist opened the scoring at 2:43 with a blocker-side, one-timer from the right faceoff dot, and Guentzel gave Pittsburgh a two-goal lead when he swept a rebound underneath Ward from the top of the crease.

DeBrincat put Chicago on the board with a power-play goal. He scored his eighth goal in 13 games on a one-timer from Kane.

Kunitz tied it for Chicago at 6:46 of the second period. Kunitz, who won three Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh, scored on a night when the Penguins honored their 2009 Stanley Cup championship team.

The Penguins regained the lead at 9:49 of the second when Brassard squeezed a one-timer from Phil Kessel between Ward's pads from the right circle. Keith tied it at 3 with a slap shot from the left point just as a power play expired.

NOTES: Penguins' D Kris Letang played in his 722nd career game, tied with Rick Kehoe for sixth on the franchise list. Letang's assist gives him a seven-game points streak. ... Chicago D Erik Gustafsson has a five-game points streak after registering an assist. . F Drake Caggiula made his Blackhawks debut after he was acquired in a trade with Edmonton on Dec. 31. ... Penguins D Justin Schultz, who has not played since Oct. 13, skated on his own for the first time before Pittsburgh's practice Saturday.

                  **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                  13) Chargers 23, Ravens 17— Baltimore’s offense was totally inept for three quarters, then Lamar Jackson came alive in 4th quarter; after being down 23-3, Ravens had ball in last 2:00 with shot at a miraculous comeback, but Jackson fumbled ball away and the Chargers advance.

Same referee worked the Ravens-Chargers game in LA two weeks ago; end of 3rd quarter and beginning of 4th were dominated by the replay official, who had couple of tough calls to make and didn’t necessarily get them right.

                  12) Chargers are 9-0 this season outside of LA; they go to Foxboro next Sunday, their third straight week on the road.

                  11) Eagles 16, Bears 15— Chicago missed a 43-yard FG with 0:05 left; ball clanked off the left upright, then hit the crossbar and bounced back, as the defending champs posted an upset win.

Eagles trailed 15-10 but drove 80 yards in 12-plays, scoring winning TD on a 4th-down pass with 0:56 left. Nick Foles may soon be called Mr January.

Eagles visit New Orleans next Sunday; Dallas plays the Rams in LA Saturday night.

                  10) Foles’ restructured contract pays him $500k for playing 33% of snaps in a playoff game and another $500k if the Eagles win that game, so he banked $1M Sunday night.

                  9) Kansas Jayhawks’ star Udoka Azubuike is out for the season with a torn ligament in his right hand, very bad news for the Jayhwawks’ national title hopes.

                  8) Minnesota Timberwolves fired coach/GM Tom Thibodeau Sunday, after the Timberwolves beat the Lebron-less Lakers; not sure how teams in smaller NBA markets are supposed to win- they traded their best player to Philly, then fired their coach a few weeks later. What coach are they hiring to turn things around?

                  7) Early lines on next week’s NFL games:
                  — Kansas City -5.5 (56.5) vs Indianapolis
                  — Rams -7 (49.5) vs Dallas
                  — New England -4.5 (47.5) vs LA Chargers
                  — New Orleans -9 (51) vs Philadelphia

                  6) Houston 90, Memphis 77— Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars are 15-0, best team in the AAC.

                  5) Temple 85, Wichita State 81 OT— Owls scored last 11 points of regulation, then won game in OT. Third straight loss for a young Wichita team, tough one to bounce back from- they led by 13 at the half.

                  4) Xander Schauffele shot a final round 62, won the Tournament of Champions in Kapalua Sunday, by a shot over Gary Woodland, in the first PGA Tour event of 2019.

                  3) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Lakers’ coach Luke Walton; he is talking about Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram:

“They’re trying, but they’re young. At some point, we need more passion. We need more fight. And that’s not scoring more. That’s more diving for loose balls, communicating loudly, grabbing [rebounds].

“Brandon had some really nice crack-back rebounds tonight that we can get out and run [from]. We need that all the time from him. So, it’s not just them, but until we get healthy again, you got to play in this league with some passion and fire. It’s hard to win in this league when you are healthy. So you need to double that effort when guys are down.”

                  2) Cleveland Cavaliers signed G Patrick McCaw to a two-year, $6M deal; his old team (Golden State) didn’t match the deal, but then Cleveland waived McCaw Sunday, after only three games, apparently hoping to sign him for a much lower salary later on. Had they just offered him the lower salary right away, the Warriors would’ve been more likely to have matched the offer.

                  1) Right now, looks like the Oakland Raiders will have the 4th, 24th and 27th picks in April’s draft, which takes place in Nashville. Raiders have Bears’/Cowboys’ first round picks in that draft, as result of trading Kahlil Mack and Amari Cooper.

                    • Flames take goal-scoring to Chicago, and this week's NHL predictions and picks
                      Monty Andrews

The Calgary Flames remain one of the highest-scoring teams in the NHL – and that run of offensive dominance isn't likely to end Monday night, at least according to oddsmakers. The Flames' latest shot at a net-filling party highlights this week's action on the ice, a stretch that includes the Buffalo Sabres looking to end a devilish trend against New Jersey and the Anaheim Ducks well-positioned to end their eight-game slide. Here are the top games and trends to monitor in early week NHL action:

                      Playing With Fire

The Chicago Blackhawks have been solid of late, going 6-3-1 SU in their previous 10 games – but that trend could very well shift Monday night as they welcome the dangerous Flames to United Center. Calgary ranks third in the league in goals per game and has kept up that blistering pace so far in the new year, having scored 12 goals through its first three January games. Flames games are averaging nearly eight total goals so far this month, while the Blackhawks have seen an average of 6.33 goals scored in their three January contests; Monday's total is up from 6 to 6.5.

                      Puckline Problems

The Tampa Bay Lightning are far and away the top team in the NHL as we roll into 2019 – but they haven't been all that successful on the puckline as they host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. The Lightning have won seven of their previous eight games but are just 3-5 against the puckline over that stretch, with four of their outright victories coming by a single goal. The Blue Jackets are on a tear, having won six of their past eight overall. But there's a silver lining for Tampa Bay puckline bettors: the Lightning have won four straight meetings between the two sides, three of those games by multiple goals.

                      Devils Dig Buffalo

Road teams haven't fared well at KeyBank Center so far this season – but you could hardly blame the New Jersey Devils for ignoring that trend as they venture to upstate New York for a Tuesday night encounter with the Buffalo Sabres. The hosts come into this one having gone 13-5-3 at KeyBank, a major reason for their half-season resurgence. But the Devils have won six consecutive games in Buffalo, while limiting the Sabres to two or fewer goals five times over that stretch. And New Jersey has been particularly dominant of late, outscoring the Sabres 9-3 in the last two meetings in Buffalo.

                      Eight is Enough

The Anaheim Ducks have lost eight consecutive games entering the week – but recent history suggests that cold snap is about to break as they host the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night. The home team has prevailed in eight of the past 11 meetings between the 1990s expansion cousins – and that bodes well for the Ducks, who haven't allowed more than one goal in a home game against the Senators since Game 5 of the 2007 Stanley Cup finals. Ottawa has also lost eight in a row, and has allowed four or more goals in seven of those defeats.
Goalie Profile: Marc-Andre Fleury and Malcolm Subban, Vegas Golden Knights

We're highlighting both of Vegas' sensational netminders in this space, since both players have contributed significantly to the Golden Knights' return to the upper echelon of Western Conference teams. They've combined to allow just seven goals over the course of Vegas' six-game winning streak, and are major reasons for the Golden Knights coming into the week with a sizzling 10-1-3 SU mark over their past 14 games. Once considered a longshot to return to the Stanley Cup final, the Golden Knights are now an incredible +1200 to win it all in their second season.

Injury Update: Elias Pettersson, Vancouver Canucks

Canucks fans are recoiling, while Under bettors are no doubt rejoicing with word that super-rookie Pettersson is expected to miss a couple of weeks with a slightly sprained MCL in his knee. Pettersson leads all first-year players in scoring by a wide margin with 22 goals and 42 points through 38 games, and his absence represents a major blow to a Vancouver offense that has underperformed without him. The Canucks are just 2-4 SU and 1-5 O/U in six games without Pettersson this season, failing to score more than two goals in any of them.

                      Hat Trick Trends

The Under is back in charge as we watch the calendar flip to 2019. Teams have gone below the total in 26 of 49 games (53.1 percent) over the previous seven days, with seven of 11 extra-time games going Under. The season trend is too close to call, with 308 Unders compared to 307 Overs.

The hottest trend continues to be the road favorite. Away faves have gone a sizzling 42-17-7 SU over the previous 30 days, good for a 63.6-percent success rate that easily dwarfs that of home favorites (57.5 percent) over the same span. But home faves still reign supreme for the season at 58.9 percent compared to away faves at 56.2 percent.

Goal-scoring continues to be the story of the NHL season – but someone forgot to tell Kevin Pollack. The veteran official has been a totals bettor's dream, returning a whopping 12.72 units to the Under with an 11-22 O/U record through his 33 games. Teams have combined to score an average of just 5.3 goals in that span.

                        • Binnington gets shutout in 1st start, Blues beat Flyers 3-0
                          January 7, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Brayden Schenn and Vladimir Tarasenko scored and Jordan Binnington stopped 25 shots in his first NHL start to lead the St. Louis Blues past the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 on Monday night in a listless game between two of the worst teams in the league.

David Perron scored an empty-netter in the final minutes for St. Louis.

The 25-year-old Binnington had played just two games in mop-up duty this season behind Jake Allen. He was sent to the minors in December to keep fresh and earned three wins with a shutout to earn AHL player of the week honors. He was called up - and got the call to start against the hapless Flyers.

The win gave the Blues 38 points and moved them past Los Angeles, out of last place in the Western Conference. Only Ottawa has fewer points than the Flyers (36) in the East after Philadelphia's seventh straight loss. Both teams fired their coaches this season.

The Flyers have scored only 12 goals over their seven-game losing streak, their longest losing streak since they went 0-5-5 over November-December last season.

                          PREDATORS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Pekka Rinne made 18 saves for his third shutout of the season and the 54th of his career as Nashville blanked Toronto.

Mattias Ekholm, Kevin Fiala and Colton Sissons each had goal and an assist for Nashville, and P.K. Subban also scored.

Rinne is now tied with Marc-Andre Fleury, Bernie Parent and Ed Giacomin for 21st on the all-time shutout list.

Michael Hutchinson stopped 28 shots for the Maple Leafs, who hit the post three times and had a goal called back for offside.

                          WILD 1, CANADIENS 0

MONTREAL (AP) - Mikael Granlund scored and Devan Dubnyk stopped 32 shots for his first shutout of the season for Minnesota.

The Wild have won three straight games, all on the road.

Carey Price stopped 24 shots for the Canadiens, who have dropped two in a row.

Montreal lost Shea Weber to injury. The Canadiens' captain was hit in the face by a puck while blocking a shot six minutes into the first period. He played seven more shifts in the period, but did not return for the second.

                          FLAMES 4, BLACKHAWKS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau scored two goals, David Rittich made 32 saves and Calgary edged Chicago.

Sean Monahan had a goal and an assist as Western Conference-leading Calgary closed out a 3-1 trip with its second straight win. Garnet Hathaway scored an empty-net goal with 50 seconds left, and Elias Lindholm finished with two assists.

Gaudreau extended his goal-scoring streak to five games.

Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks in the opener of a three-game homestand. Alex DeBrincat and Brandon Saad also scored, and Collin Delia made 39 stops.

                          SHARKS 3, KINGS 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Erik Karlsson had three assists, Tomas Hertl scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period and surging San Jose defeated Los Angeles.

Joonas Donskoi and Joe Thornton also scored for San Jose. Martin Jones made 22 saves as the Sharks won their fifth in six games.

Anze Kopitar had a goal and Jack Campbell turned back 26 shots for the Kings, who have lost three of four.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                              13) Philadelphia Eagles were -2 in turnovers at Chicago Sunday; over the last 40 years, NFL road playoff teams who were -2 or worse in turnovers went 4-112 in those games.

Make that 5-112. Turnovers are important.

                              12) Turns out the Chargers used seven defensive backs on every snap but one against the Ravens Sunday, which neutralized Lamar Jackson’s speed when he scrambled.

                              11) Underdogs covered the last ten NFL playoff games.

                              10) How is it that Kliff Kingsbury gets the boot at freakin’ Texas Tech, but is a hot commodity with NFL teams? Mike Leach won at Texas Tech, but doesn’t get any NFL looks. Having coached Pat Mahomes elevates his resume; would Lincoln Riley be a hot commodity now if he showed interest in an NFL head coaching job?

                              9) Ohio State hired Michigan DL coach Greg Mattison as its new co-defensive coordinator; he will team with former San Francisco 49ers DB’s coach Jeff Hafley, as new HC Ryan Day tells former Rutgers/Bucs’ HC Greg Schiano to take a hike.

                              8) Speaking of the Buckeyes, QB Dwayne Haskins declared for the NFL Draft, which figures since QB Justin Fields transferred from Georgia to Ohio State last week. If Haskins was staying in Columbus, Fields would’ve transferred somewhere else.

                              7) Is Haskins a first round draft pick? The last QB from a Big 14 school to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft was Kerry Collins, way back in 1995. Tom Brady/Drew Brees weren’t first round draft picks.

                              6) Things can change quickly. Three years ago, golfer Xander Schauffele started his season by missing nine of 12 cuts on the Web.com Tour; he wound up earning his PGA Tour card by only $11,687. Now he leads the race for the FedEx Cup (worth $10M).

                              5) #1 seeds in this round of NFL playoffs are 5-1 vs spread the last three years, but there is a quirk in there; Eagles were actually a home underdog to Atlanta in this round LY, because of Carson Wentz being hurt and his backup (the now-famous Nick Foles) starting in his place.

                              4) Major league baseball had a 4% drop in attendance last year, blamed in large part on bad weather in the spring and a change in how the Marlins and the Blue Jays accounted for sales (Marlins were lying about attendance before their sale).

Overall, the major leagues topped the $10B mark last year in total revenue.

                              3) Movie recommendation; Molly’s Game is playing on Showtime this month, a terrific movie (and a true story) about a woman who ran an underground poker game for celebrities and rich people in Los Angeles, and later New York. Tremendous movie.

                              2) Favorites covered eight of first nine ACC conference basketball games this season.

                              1)Clemson 44, Alabama 16:
                              — Sixth straight year underdog covered the national title game.
                              — Alabama didn’t score in last 44:18 of this game.
                              — Clemson ran a pick-6 in for a TD 1:40 into this game
                              — Tigers converted 10-15 on third down, Alabama only 4-13.
                              — Clemson WR Justyn Boyd looked like freakin’ Fred Biletnikoff, catching six balls for 153 yards and two TD’s; kid has tremendous hands.
                              — Clemson won two of the last three national titles; Alabama is still damn good.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
