Crosby stars in return, Pens beat Stars

PITTSBURGH (AP) Sidney Crosby returned from an upper-body injury to pick up a goal and two assists and the Pittsburgh Penguins drilled the Dallas Stars 5-1 on Wednesday night.

The Pittsburgh captain missed three games after getting hurt last week, the latest setback during a forgettable early opening quarter of the season for the perennial Stanley Cup contenders.

Crosby provided Pittsburgh with a needed spark. He set up Jake Guentzel for a goal less than 4 minutes into the game and provided a highlight-reel marker later in the opening period when he raced to the net and smacked in a rebound past Anton Khudobin to give Pittsburgh a three-goal lead.

Evgeni Malkin, Patric Hornqvist and Tanner Pearson also scored for the Penguins. Two days after letting a 4-1 advantage disappear in a loss to Buffalo, Pittsburgh clamped down on the Stars. Casey DeSmith was rarely tested early and finished with 18 saves.

Mattias Janmark spoiled DeSmith's bid for a shutout with a third-period goal. Khudobin was pulled after Pearson beat him with a slap shot on the breakaway made it 5-0. Khudobin stopped just 11 of 16 shots. Rookie Landon Bow stopped 14 shots in his NHL debut.

LIGHTNING 7, PANTHERS 3

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Steven Stamkos had a goal and three assists and Tampa Bay beat Florida to reclaimed the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

Nikita Kucherov and Ryan McDonagh each had a goal and two assists. Mathieu Joseph, Yanni Gourde, Adam Erne and Dan Giradi also scored, J.T. Miller had three assists, and Louis Domingue made 40 saves. The Lightning are 11-1-1 at home against Florida since the start of the 2013-14 season.

Panthers left wing Mike Hoffman extended his points streak to 17 games (10 goals, 20 points) with a late third-period power-play goal. He is the fifth player in NHL history to have a points streak of at least 17 games in his first season with a franchise.

Troy Brouwer and Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers.

RANGERS 5, ISLANDERS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Alexandar Georgiev stopped 29 shots for his first career shutout, Filip Chytil scored for the fifth straight game, and the Rangers beat the crosstown-rival Islanders.

Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, and Cody McLeod, Neal Pionk and Kevin Hayes also scored to help the Rangers win for the ninth time in 11 games (9-1-1). Kevin Shattenkirk and Mika Zibanejad each added two assists in the Rangers' seventh straight win at home, now by a combined 26-10 margin.

The Rangers ended an eight-game skid (0-7-1) to the Islanders, who had won 12 of the previous 13 meetings, including a 7-5 win at home last Thursday night.

CAPITALS 4, BLACKHAWKS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Tom Wilson, Andre Burakovsky and Michal Kempny scored to give Washington an early lead, and the Capitals held off Chicago.

Devante Smith-Pelly also scored and Braden Holtby stopped 37 shots to help Washington win its third straight. Brandon Saad, Erik Gustafsson scored for Chicago.

Wilson, playing in just his fifth game after sitting out the first 16 because of a suspension, scored his second goal of the season just 54 seconds in after upending Chicago goalie Corey Crawford.

SABRES 5, FLYERS 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Evan Rodrigues had a goal and an assist in Buffalo's four-goal first period, and the Sabres extended their NHL-best winning streak to seven games.

Buffalo has its longest run since taking 10 games in a row to open the 2006-07 season.

Jeff Skinner, Tage Thompson and Johan Larsson also scored in the opening period for the Sabres. Sam Reinhart added an empty-net goal in the third, and Carter Hutton made 23 saves.

Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds scored for Philadelphia.

HURRICANES 5, MAPLE LEAFS 2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Trevor van Riemsdyk and Justin Williams scored 22 seconds apart in the first period, sending Carolina past Toronto.

Curtis McElhinney made 30 saves to help Carolina snap Toronto's four-game winning streak. Micheal Ferland, Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov also scored.

John Tavares and Kasperi Kapanen scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs are 9-2 on the road.

RED WINGS 3, BRUINS 2, OT

DETROIT (AP) - Andreas Athanasiou tied it midway through the third period and scored 49 seconds into overtime to lift Detroit past Boston.

Jimmy Howard stopped 34 shots and Tyler Bertuzzi also scored for Detroit. The Red Wings have won nine of 11 and are over .500 (10-9-2) for the first time this season.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pekka Rinne made 28 saves to set an NHL record for wins by a goalie from Finland, and Nashville spoiled Craig Berube's first game as St. Louis' coach.

Rinne earned his 320th career victory, surpassing Miikka Kiprusoff for most by a Finnish-born goaltender. Frederick Gaudreau, Filip Forsberg, Austin Watson and Ryan Ellis scored for Nashville.

Robert Thomas had the lone goal for the Blues. Berube took over as interim head coach Monday night when Mike Yeo was fired.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal scored his second goal of the game with 5:58 left and Minnesota overcame a sloppy third period to beat Ottawa.

Matt Dumba also scored twice to help the Wild end a two-game slide and win for the 12th time in 17 games. Mikael Granlund had three assists.

Chris Tierney, Thomas Chabot, Christian Jaros and Colin White scored for Ottawa.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Max Pacioretty stuffed in a rebound at 3:36 of overtime to lift Vegas past Arizona.

Pacioretty also scored in the second period, Tomas Nosek had a goal and Marc-Andre Fleury made 19 saves. Derek Stepan scored twice for Arizona, and Darcy Kuemper had 20 saves.

13) Bears 23, Lions 16— Chicago won its last five games, beating Detroit twice in 12 days. Chase Daniel won his first NFL start in four years, and only the third of his 9-year career.

Chicago now has 29 takeaways, most in the NFL, and a +14 turnover ratio.

12) Cowboys 31, Redskins 23— Three weeks ago, Dallas was 3-5 and pundits were calling for coach Jason Garrett’s head. Now Dallas is in first place in the NFC East, a division that figures to have a wild finish. What if all four teams wound up 8-8?

11) Saints 31, Falcons 17— New Orleans won its last 10 games, covered its last nine. Some pundits are already awarding them the Lombardi Trophy.

Falcons have a running back named Ito Smith, a rookie from Southern Miss, and apparently, he was named after Judge Lance Ito, the judge who presided over OJ Simpson’s murder trial.

One of his parents thought young Mr Smith resembled Judge Ito right after he was born, so he was named after the then-famous judge, who was on TV almost every day for about a year.

10) Its funny, you hear about these college basketball teams who take international trips in the summer and how much it helps them the following season, which it usually does.

Except when it doesn’t; few years ago, a team I can’t remember who (USC maybe??) lost its point guard with a torn ACL on its international trip during the late summer and their season that winter was a total disaster. Goes to show you; there are no guarantees in life.

9) Basketball referee Ed Corbett worked the Maui Classic this week, then retired from being a basketball official— pretty good way to go out. Corbett was a D-I referee for 33 years.

8) Referee Ted Valentine, often known as TV Teddy for his tendency to attract attention while he referees, also worked the Maui Classic Monday-Wednesday, but then on Thursday, he was at Cal State-Fullerton working the Wooden Legacy tournament.

The best college basketball refs work 70-80 games a year from November-March and rake in a six-figure income from a job that usually isn’t their primary source of income.

3) Mississippi State 35, Ole Miss 3— Rebels lost their last five games, finished their season 5-7, on a night where a fracas broke out and every player on both teams was assessed a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Never saw that before.

2) North Carolina had a football game cancelled by weather on September 15; they’re not going to make the game up, for financial reasons.

Turns out the Tar Heels had game cancellation insurance worth $1.6M; with low fan interest in another game, only a few teams available to play, UNC chose not to pay to add a week to its second consecutive losing season- they weren’t going to a bowl game either way.

Skinner leads Sabres past Canadiens 3-2, winning streak at 8

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Jeff Skinner scored 3:06 into overtime after getting the tying goal late in regulation, and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Friday for their eighth straight victory.

Buffalo's win streak is the longest in the NHL and the team's best stretch since winning 10 in a row to start the 2006-07 season. Casey Mittelstadt also scored for the Sabres, and Carter Hutton made 31 saves.

Brendan Gallagher and Andrew Shaw scored the Canadiens, who have lost three straight. Phillip Danault had two assists, and Antti Niemi stopped 37 shots.

FLYERS 4, RANGERS 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Sean Couturier scored a pair of goals, Calvin Pickard made 31 saves in his 12th career shutout and Philadelphia snapped a four-game losing streak by scoring three goals in the final five minutes, 21 seconds.

Travis Konecny had a goal, two assists and got into fight, Jordan Weal scored an empty-net goal and Claude Giroux had three assists for Philadelphia.

Pickard was in net because starter Brian Elliott and backup Michal Neuvirth are sidelined with lower body injuries. Pickard has made 10 appearances and has a 4-1-2 record.

New York lost for the third time in 12 games. The Rangers entered with three wins a row.

WILD 4, JETS 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal scored with 2:31 remaining and Minnesota topped Winnipeg in an emotional, penalty-filled matchup.

Nino Niederreiter, Eric Fehr and Zach Parise also scored for Minnesota, which trailed 2-0 after two periods. Alex Stalock made 26 saves while filling in for Devan Dubnyk, who was scratched with an illness.

Patrik Laine scored for the sixth time in three games for Winnipeg, which has lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. Nikolaj Ehlers added his fifth goal of the season, and Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves.

DUCKS 2, OILERS 1, OT

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Rickard Rakell scored 14 seconds into overtime as Anaheim rallied to beat Edmonton.

The Ducks earned their second straight win after a pair of overtime losses to Toronto and Colorado. Nick Ritchie tied the game with 16.2 seconds remaining, and John Gibson made 27 saves.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored a power-play goal for the Oilers. Mikko Koskinen made 24 saves, and Connor McDavid extended his point streak to five games.

CAPITALS 3, RED WINGS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michal Kempny and Alex Ovechkin scored in a 1:56 span of the third period and Washington recorded its season-high fourth consecutive victory.

Kempny snapped a 1-1 tie with a slap shot at 6:38, and Ovechkin extended the lead to 3-1 with his 16th of the season.

Ovechkin and Tom Wilson each finished with a goal and an assist against Detroit. Washington goalie Braden Holtby had 31 saves.

Andreas Athanasiou scored his 10th goal of the season in the first period for the Red Wings, who were 9-2 in their last 11 games before the trip to Washington. Jonathan Bernier finished with 17 stops.

ISLANDERS 4, DEVILS 3, OT

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Mathew Barzal scored on a his own rebound after being stopped on a breakaway at 3:40 of overtime to lead the Islanders.

Jordan Eberle, Anders Lee and Nick Leddy also scored as the Islanders snapped a two-game losing streak and beat New Jersey for the second time this season. Thomas Greiss made 39 saves.

Taylor Hall, Brian Boyle and Marcus Johansson scored for the Devils, and Keith Kinkaid made 31 saves. The loss was the fourth in 11 home games (7-1-3), with only one coming in regulation.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2, FLAMES 0

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Alex Tuch had a goal and an assist in his 100th career game to lead Vegas.

The Golden Knights avenged a 7-2 loss at Calgary on Monday and marked the first time the Flames have been shut out this season.

Colin Miller scored his first goal of the season, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 saves in his fourth shutout of the season. It also was the 52nd shutout of his career, moving him into sole possession of 24th place on the NHL list, one shy of Nashville's Pekka Rinne.

Calgary goaltender David Rittich made 26 saves. He entered with a six-start win streak and an 8-1-0 mark on the year.

Ron Hainsey and Kasperi Kapenen scored for the Maples Leafs (15-8-0), and Frederik Andersen stopped 20 shots.

BRUINS 2, PENGUINS 1, OT

BOSTON (AP) - Joakim Nordstrom scored 1:57 into overtime to lift Boston past Pittsburgh.

Jake DeBrusk also scored and Jaroslav Halak made 36 saves for the Bruins.

Evgeni Malkin scored the only goal for Pittsburgh, which was trying to win back-to-back games for the first time in nearly a month.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - J.T. Compher scored a pair of short-handed goals in his return after missing 16 games due to injury for Colorado.

Philipp Grubauer made 36 saves in his fifth win and first shutout of the season. Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen each had a goal and assist, and Tyson Barrie also scored for the Avalanche.

Dylan Strome scored a power-play goal in the third period as the Coyotes lost for the fourth time in five games.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Erik Karlsson had a goal and two assists and Joe Thornton surpassed a big milestone for the second time this month for San Jose.

Thornton had two assists, moving him past Mario Lemieux for 11th place on the NHL list. The 39-year-old center scored his 400th goal on Nov. 13.

Logan Couture, Timo Meier and Melker Karlsson also scored in the win.

3) Marquette 77, Louisville 74 OT— Every November I’m reminded of how much I dislike Jay Bilas as an ESPN analyst; its like the swallows returning to Capistrano. Bilas should be a referee supervisor, because thats about half of all his analysis- ripping the officials.

To me, listening to really good announcers is like listening to a couple of friends talk about a game; we’re not going to agree on everything, but you enjoy the debate. When Bilas is on a game, half the time I feel like I’m being scolded.

This was an interesting game, but not sure how good these teams are. Marquette is 77-61 in Wolciechowski’s 4+ years as coach (31-41 in Big East games), Louisville is rebuilding with Chris Mack taking over as they start the post-Pitino era.

2) North Carolina 94, UCLA 78— Bruins led by 5 at halftime, so not only did UCLA lose both its game in Las Vegas, they were outscored by 20+ points in a half in both games. Safe to say that the natives in Westwood are getting a little annoyed with the Steve Alford era.

1) Kent State 77, Vanderbilt 75— Commodores were a 12-point favorite and lost, but thats not the worst news; star freshman Darius Garland hurt his knee- the exact extent of the injury is not yet known, but the loss of the 6-2 NBA prospect would be a huge blow to Vandy’s hopes.
