Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

13) Lot of college basketball games in November are awful; mismatches and teams just scheduling easy wins, but Tuesday I was highly entertained by two excellent games.

Memphis-LSU was great entertainment; Penny Hardaway will build a power with the Tigers, and LSU has a strong young team, also. Both teams played fast and played well.

Georgetown-Illinois was fun to watch; Illini PG got a concussion during the afternoon walk-thru and didn’t play, which brings up a pet peeve of mine.

12) Some coaches are insane; they have these “walk-thrus” on game day but there are guys who turn them into practices— put it this way, you can’t get a concussion while walking. Having a practice on game day takes energy away from the game, which is all that matters. Getting your point guard hurt during a practice on game day is bleeping stupid.

Patrick Ewing’s team has upgraded its talent in his second year on the job, but they got a gift here when the other team’s point guard got hurt.

11) Draymond Green’s one-game suspension cost him $120,000, which is pocket change to Green, but the public nature of it makes it way more significant than that. Green has been the heart of this Warrior dynasty; the most important player isn’t always the best player.

10) Chiefs-Rams line is now 3.5, moving up from 2 or 2.5 when game was scheduled to be played in Mexico City. Total doesn’t seem to have moved, staying at 63.5, the highest NFL total ever.

9) Michigan 73, Villanova 46— Some alum gave Villanova so much money they named their gym after him, then they had FS1 interview him during the game. Too bad he couldn’t play; Michigan avenged (somewhat) their loss to Villanova in the national title game last April.

This game was 44-17 at halftime. Wow.

8) SEC decided to make Nashville the permanent home of its conference basketball tourney, signing a deal to keep the event in Music City thru 2035.

7) IUPUI 76, Boston College 69— Jaguars from the Horizon League were 16-point underdogs; a 6-3 guard named Camron Justice torched the Eagles for 29 points.

6) Magic 111, 76ers 106— Philly led by 16 early in 4th quarter, losing Jimmy Butler’s debut with the 76ers. Orlando is 7-8 and appears to be an improved team- their last winning season was seven years ago.

5) Timberwolves 107, Pelicans 100— Minnesota’s first game with Saric/Covington; from this point on, their record will be measured against Philly, because of the big trade.

4) Pistons 106, Raptors 104— Reggie Bullock scored on an out-of-bounds play at the buzzer as Dwane Casey won his return to Toronto after the Raptors fired him last spring, despite a regular season record of 320-238 (21-30 in playoffs).

3) Radford 63, Notre Dame 60— Not as big an upset as we’d think; Radford won the Big South LY, won a play-in game, then lost to Villanova in NCAA’s. Highlanders were only a 12.5-point underdog; they’re in top 20 nationally in experience, top 50 in minutes continuity and they play a slow tempo, so they’re hard to guard.

2) Singer Billy Idol became a US citizen this week; good to see people who are so happy when they become citizens. This country was built by immigrants, something we shouldn’t forget.

1) NFL flexed the Steelers-Raiders game out of the Sunday night slot on December 9 (Week 14) and instead will show Rams-Bears on NBC. Should be nice and balmy in Chicago for a night game on December 9th. Do they think of the fans in Chicago who pay to go to these games?

PITTSBURGH (AP) Brayden Point scored three straight power-play goals in 1:31 - the sixth-fastest three goals in NHL history - and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Thursday night.

Bill Mosienko holds the record, scoring three times in 21 seconds for Chicago against New York in 1952. Point's 91-second burst was the second-fastest three goals since 1967-68.

Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby sat out after sustaining an upper-body injury Tuesday night at New Jersey. Coach Mike Sullivan confirmed the injury is not a concussion.

Yanni Gourde also had a power-play goal, Nikita Kucherov added three assists, and backup goalie Louis Domingue made 28 saves to help the Lightning win for the fifth time in seven games. Starting goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is out indefinitely.

Patric Hornqvist scored twice for Pittsburgh, Phil Kessel also connected, Evgeni Malkin had two assists and Matt Murray stopped 22 shots. The Penguins have lost seven of eight following a four-game winning streak.

SENATORS 2, RED WINGS 1

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Craig Anderson stopped two third-period penalty shots and Drake Batherson scored in his NHL debut to help Ottawa beat Detroit.

Anderson stopped 34 shots in his NHL-leading 17th appearance of the season, allowing only Michael Rasmussen's goal. Cody Ceci also scored for the Senators.

Detroit had a chance to tie it midway through the third when Andreas Athanasiou was awarded a penalty shot after Ceci held him on a breakaway. Anderson read the play well and made a pad save.

Seven minutes later, Anderson came up big on another penalty shot after Rasmussen was pulled down by Chris Wideman. Anderson denied Rasmussen's attempt to go through the leg pads.

ISLANDERS 7, RANGERS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Anthony Beauvillier had three goals and an assist, and the New York Islanders held off the Rangers 7-5 to keep up their recent mastery over their cross-town rival.

Leo Komarov had a goal and an assist, Anders Lee, Brock Nelson and Cal Clutterbuck also scored and Thomas Greiss stopped 36 shots to help the Islanders beat the Rangers for the 12th time in 13 meetings.

Chris Kreider had two goals and Fredrik Claesson and Filip Chytil also scored for the Rangers.

CANADIENS 3, FLAMES 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Carey Price made 43 saves and Artturi Lehkonen broke a tie midway through the third period to help Montreal beat Calgary.

Lehkonen scored his first goal in 18 games on a harmless-looking 40-foot wrist shot from off the wing that leaked through goalie Mike Smith's pads.

Tomas Tatar and Jonathan Drouin also scored for Montreal, and Max Domi had an assist to extend his points streak to eight games. Matthew Tkachuk scored twice for Calgary, and Smith finished with 19 saves.

WILD 6, CANUCKS 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Mikko Koivu had a goal and two assists and Minnesota beat Vancouver.

Eric Staal had a goal and an assist, and Charlie Coyle, Nino Niederreiter, Matt Dumba and Jason Zucker also scored in the Wild's highest-scoring game of the season. Devan Dubnyk made 25 saves.

Bo Horvat and Markus Granlund scored for Vancouver.

BLUE JACKETS 7, PANTHERS 3

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Joonas Korpisalo stopped 38 shots and Columbus routed Florida.

Markus Hannikainen, Anthony Duclair, Josh Anderson, Pierre Luc-Dubois, Cam Atkinson, Brandon Dubinsky and Boone Jenner scored. Columbus is 4-0-2 in its last six.

Nick Bjugstad, Aaron Ekblad and Keith Yandle scored for Florida.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Darcy Kuemper had a career-high 44 saves and Arizona Coyotes held off Western Conference-leading Nashville.

Kuemper, starting in place of injured Antti Raanta, kept a shutout going until Nick Bonino scored with 7:51 to play. Michael Grabner and Jason Demers scored to help Arizona improve to 9-8-1.

DEVILS 3, FLYERS 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Keith Kinkaid made 29 saves for his third shutout of the season and seventh of his career, leading New Jersey past Philadelphia.

Kyle Palmieri, Joey Anderson and Blake Coleman scored. The Devils have won consecutive games for the first time since opening the season with four straight victories.

13) Annual tradition here in not-so-beautiful upstate New York. When it snows outside, and it is snowing now, I get on the Interweb and price condos in Las Vegas, where snow is merely a rumor.

Snow is the only bad part of living here; nothing is quite as much fun as getting up on a step-ladder to sweep the snow off my satellite dish.

12) Last year at this time the Miami Marlins sold off their whole outfield; Stanton, Ozuna and Yelich. Wonder what the odds were that of those three guys, Christian Yelich would be the MVP this season? He had a great year, leading Milwaukee to a playoff berth.

11) San Diego Union-Tribune writer John Maffei is the only one out of 30 voters who didn’t vote for Jacob deGrom for the NL Cy Young Award. Mr Maffei values W-L record as a stat, so deGrom’s 10-9 record for a dismal Mets team didn’t impress him much.

10) UConn 83, Syracuse 76— Huskies made 12-21 behind arc; Syracuse was playing without G Howard; things aren’t as easy when you play away from home.

9) DePaul 72, Penn State 70 OT— Nittany Lions jumped out to 11-0 lead, trailed 36-31 at half, then forced OT, where they missed wide open, game-tying jumper at end of OT. DePaul is 3-0 for first time in ten years.

8) Ohio State 69, Creighton 60— Second quality road win for the young Buckeyes, who won at Cincinnati last week.

7) Seahawks 27, Packers 24— Seattle outrushed Green Bay 173-48; Packers converted only 3-11 third down plays. 46-yard FG Crosby missed when Packers led 7-0 turned out to be painful.

6) Houston Rockets and Carmelo Anthony parted ways after 10 games; who thought this pairing was going to be a good idea? Anthony didn’t want to come off the bench, but when you get older and your skills decline, what did he think was going to happen?

5) Lakers’ G Rajon Rondo broke his hand, is out 3-5 weeks.

4) Former LSU football coach Les Miles took a one-time lump sum payment of $1.5M from the school, reduced from the $6.5M he was scheduled to get over the next five years, but that tells me that Miles is going to be a head coach somewhere else next season. If he took the $6.5M, he would’ve had to stay out of coaching until 2023.

3) Someone on Twitter posted a list of their ten favorite airports, and it started a firestorm of responses; since I only fly to one place, and it is usually a non-stop flight, my list is short:

2) Cal Bears postponed their basketball game with Detroit Mercy Thursday night because of poor air quality in the area due to the wild fires. San Francisco also postponed Friday night’s home basketball game with Arizona State.

1) Jim Boeheim has been the basketball coach at Syracuse for 43 years; he played for the Orange, was an assistant coach there before being head coach. Boeheim’s son Buddy is a player for Syracuse now; how the hell do they spell the kid’s last name wrong on his orange jersey?

This weekend's NHL betting predictions and picks: Preds paralyzed on power play?

The Western Conference leading Predators take on the cellar dwelling Kings, as they try to keep rolling. We cover this game and much more in our NHL betting cheat sheet with need-to-know betting notes, goalie profiles and injury news to help you crack the NHL odds for the weekend's matchups.

Not so Special on Special Teams

The Nashville Predators are among a handful of teams considered a serious Stanley Cup contender this season but if there is one knock on them it's their power play. The Preds rank dead last in the NHL with a paltry 11.6 % success rate with the man advantage and that number is sure to decline without P.K. Subban in the lineup. The Nashville defenseman is an integral part of the their power play and will be on the shelf for at least 3 games, including their showdown with the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. The Kings, meanwhile, are 26th in the league on the power play with a 14.3% success rate. The ineptitude on special teams for both of these offenses makes this game look like an easy Under.

Snowball Effect

Boston is 5-0 in their last five meetings in Dallas and will be out to avenge a 6-3 drubbing against the Avalanche on Wednesday. Dallas is coming off a loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets and face a stiff test against Boston as the road team is 9-2 over the last 11 meetings. The Stars are 2-11 in their previous 13 games against the Atlantic Division, while the Bruins are 9-3 in their last 12 after allowing goals in a previous game. The goaltending matchup will be exciting to watch as both Tuukka Rask and Semyon Varlamov are capable of posting a shutout but there is also a ton of offensive firepower in this game. In the end, look for the recent success of the Bruins in Colorado to continue and consider Boston a strong play heading into the weekend.

Wild Night in Minnesota

The Sabres head into Minnesota on Saturday and will need to find a way to solve Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk. The Over is 5-1-1 in the last seven road games for Buffalo and is 17-6-3 in their last 26 games against Central Division opponents. Buffalo made some key acquisitions in the offseason and are currently hanging onto a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Wild are coming off an offensive display at home against the Canucks and should carry that into their showdown against Buffalo on Saturday. Take the Over as the Sabres and Wild keep the goal judges busy at the Xcel Energy Center.

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take"

The Golden Knights are 30th in the NHL with a shockingly low 26.2 shots per game and will head into Edmonton looking to improve on their subpar road record. The Oilers meanwhile are not too far behind with 29.8 shots per game which puts them 26th in the league. With so few shots, it should be little surprise that the Oilers and Knights are 21st and 28th in the NHL respectively in goals scored. Vegas is expected to start Marc-Andre Fleury who has an impressive 2.51 goals against average this season. He will face off against Cam Talbot eho has a 3.09 GAA and will need a strong game if Edmonton is going to get the win. This is shaping up to be a defensive struggle despite the presence of one of the best players in the game in Connor McDavid.

Goalie Profile - Cory Schneider, New Jersey Devils

Cory Schneider was once considered one of the best goalies in the NHL but so far has struggled mightily for New Jersey in his few appearances between the pipes. The American netminder is 0-3 with a 4.82 GAA and a woeful .849 save percentage which is highly uncharacteristic for him. His play will go a long way in determining the success of the Devils this season. The Devils face off against the Red Wings and Jimmy Howard on Saturday. Howard is playing well with a 6-5-2 record, a 2.69 GAA and .920 SP. Detroit is worthy of consideration as a huge road underdog in this spot as Schneider tries to find his groove.

Injury Update

Andrei Vasilevskiy suffered a foot fracture earlier this week and will be out for a while according to team personnel. This is a huge blow for the Lightning, who are among a small group of teams capable of winning the Stanley Cup and will miss having one of the best goalies in the NHL. Louis Domingue is expected to take over as the interim starter, which is great news for Over bettors as the career backup has struggled mightily in relief this season. With the Lightning coming off a high scoring affair with the Penguins on Thursday, expect another against the Flyers on Saturday and take the Over.
