Monahan, Lindholm net 3rd-period goals, Flames top Leafs 3-1

TORONTO (AP) Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm scored in a 55-second span of the third period to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

Lindholm and Monahan each added an assist as Calgary snapped a three-game losing streak. Michael Frolik added an empty-net goal to seal it. Mike Smith made 24 saves.

Nazem Kadri, playing his 500th NHL game, scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen stopped 31 shots.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Rough week to be a coach in Cleveland; Browns fired Hue Jackson Monday, as well as OC Todd Haley. DC Gregg Williams is now the interim coach.

Freddie Kitchens is the new OC; saw an NFL Films segment on Kitchens Monday, on how beloved he is by players he has coached. In these turbulent times, it was great to see.

12) Cleveland Cavaliers started 0-6, then quickly fired coach Tyronn Lue, like it was Lue’s fault that Lebron James skipped town. What did they think was going to happen? Lue gets $13M to take a hike, so at least he walks away with a championship ring and a smile on his face.

11) Terry Francona, John Farrell and Alex Cora all won the World Series in their first year managing the Red Sox.

10) Mets hired agent Brodie Van Wagenen to run their franchise; not sure if that is a good idea or not, but Van Wagenen’s wife’s stepfather is Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, so he has that going for him.

9) Dallas Cowboys fired offensive line coach Paul Alexander less than halfway into his first season with the team, the first time HC Jason Garrett fired an assistant coach during a season.

Former Cowboys OL Marc Colombo, who had served as assistant OL coach since 2016, will take over as OL coach. A former Cowboys’ OL coach, 75-year old Hudson Houck is back to work with Colombo and the offensive staff in an advisory role.

USC also fired their offensive line coach Monday; HC Clay Helton is taking over play calling duties, too.

8) Buccaneers named Ryan Fitzpatrick as its starting QB for Sunday’s game at Carolina.

7) On Sunday, Los Angeles became the first city ever to host an MLB (Dodgers), NFL (Rams), NBA (Clippers), and NHL (Kings) game, all on the same day. Those games all happened within five miles of each other.

6) Syracuse football team is ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since 2001.

5) The Mets hired Yoenis Cespedes’ agent to run their franchise; he has never run a ball club before, but obviously has dealt with the Wilpons before, dealing with the Cespedes contract.

I’m guessing that behind closed doors, the Mets’ front office would make a great reality show, and that isn’t a compliment.

4) Game 3 of the World Series lasted 7:20; in 1939, New York swept the Reds 4-0 in the Series- the four games COMBINED lasted 7:04. Seriously.

Boston’s 1-4 batters Friday went a combined 0-28 at the plate; the most hitless AB in any baseball game – regular or postseason, since 1920 by a team’s 1-4 hitters was 0-24 by the 1963 Milwaukee Braves against the Houston Colt 45’s (now the Astros).

3) It surprised me that no team down 3-0 in a World Series has ever even forced a Game 6, much less won the Series. You’d think by this time, just about everything has happened.

2) Red Sox won the World Series, won 119 games; their GM west to Western Michigan, a state school. Just thought I’d mention that.

1) Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts is a free agent; his contract is up. If you owned the Dodgers, would you give him a new deal? Guy just won the NL pennant two years in a row-I’d re-sign him, but the longer he goes without a deal, the more you wonder.

This week's NHL betting predictions and picks: Sharpen your sword

The Calgary Flames travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres in a game with all of the betting trends favoring the home side. We cover this game and much more in our NHL betting cheat sheet with need-to-know betting notes, goalie profiles and injury news to help you crack the NHL odds for the early week matchups.

Sharpen Your Sword

The Buffalo Sabres host the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night and will be well rested against Calgary who played Monday night in Toronto. The Flames are 2-11 in their last 13 trips to Buffalo and the home team is 20-6-1 in the last 27 meetings between these two teams. Buffalo isn’t getting a ton of love in Vegas, but they are a much improved team and always seem to give their best playing at home. With David Rittich expected to get the start for the Flames the Sabres will take advantage of Calgary’s backup goalie and net a big win on home ice.

Ducks Fly Together

Anaheim is in the midst of a five-game losing streak, but no fault of that can be placed on John Gibson who has been absolutely surreal in the Ducks’ crease and will give them a huge edge in goal Tuesday. The Ducks are 12-2 in last 14 meetings with Philadelphia, and the Flyers are 3-13 in last 16 when playing on two day of rest. Anaheim has also made it a habit of beating up on the Metropolitan division as they have won eight in a row, and match up very well against a Flyers side who doesn’t have a ton of offensive weapons. The Ducks end their losing ways and get back in the win column at home against the Flyers.

Special Teams

The Blackhawks and Canucks meet up in Vancouver on Wednesday night as these bitter rivals renew hostilities at Rogers Arena. Chicago’s offense has been on fire so far this season and Vancouver has some of their top scoring threats back in the lineup, which sets the stage for what should be an entertaining, high scoring affair. The Hawks have the top even strength offense in the league but they have also conceded the second most goals in the NHL, while the Canucks aren’t far behind sitting in 4th. The offense will be the focal point on Wednesday night in a game that goes Over the number.

Extra Attackers

As discussed above, the Sabres and Flames face off in Buffalo on Tuesday night and after analysing the trends and evaluating the circumstances the Sabres look to be a solid bet. However, the total is a great opportunity to cash as well, as these two teams are 2nd and 3rd respectively in power play time this season meaning they will spend a decent amount of time with an extra attacker in this matchup. Add in the fact that Calgary is on a back-to-back and will be starting a backup goaltender this looks to be a high scoring contest. The Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings between these two sides and the Over is 6-0 in Calgary’s last six in the tail end of a back-to-back. Take the Over on Tuesday night.

Goalie Profile

Keith Kinkaid New Jersey Devils

The Devils are expected to welcome starting goaltender Corey Schneider back from injury very soon, but backup Keith Kinkaid has done an excellent job filling in to start the season. Kinkaid is 5-2-1 with 2.12 goals against average and a .925 percentage. He has also registered two shutouts so far this season and will go face-to-face with Andrei Vasilevskiy on Tuesday night. New Jersey plays a defensive style of game and will need to focus on keeping the Lightning offense in check on Tuesday, which should keep this game close and low scoring. The Devils have also gone Under in four of their five against the Eastern Conference which should give plenty of confidence playing the Under on Tuesday night.

Injury Update:

Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman is out at least two games and may not be available this weekend either, which will force the Lightning into adjusting their game plan defensively. Hedman is one of the best blue liners in the NHL and while his absence may lead bettors into hammering the Over it is wise to think twice as Tampa will have to change their style of play. Expect Tampa coach Jon Cooper to have his other defensemen and his forward groups play a little more defensive to make up for Hedman’s absence and as such they won’t venture forward with as much flexibility.

Betting trends of note:

* Stars are winless in last five trips to Montreal and the home team is 7-1 in last eight meetings
* Red Wings are 5-17 in last 22 meetings with CBJ and 2-8 in their last 10 trips to Columbus.
* The Minnesota Wild are 13-3 in last 16 trips to Edmonton and the road team is 10-4 in last 14 meetings. Minnesota is also playing in a back-to-back and will likely start backup Alex Stalock.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Jordan Eberle scored twice in the second period to help the New York Islanders pull away from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 6-3 victory Tuesday night.

The Penguins held a ceremony before the game to honor the victims of Saturday's synagogue shooting in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Squirrel Hill. It included an 11-second moment of silence in memory of the 11 people slain.

Eberle scored his second and third goals for the Islanders, who swept a three-game road trip. Brock Nelson scored his sixth of the season and fifth goal in five games, while Tom Kuhnhackl, who won two Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh, scored his first as an Islander. Andrew Ladd and Matt Martin also scored for New York, which has won four of six after starting the season 2-3.

The Islanders are playing eight of their first 11 games on the road for the first time in team history.

Robin Lehner stopped 23 of 25 shots, but he left the game after the second period. Thomas Greiss stopped 12 shots. No reason was immediately given for the change.

Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Dominik Simon scored for Pittsburgh, which ended its four-game winning streak.

Marchand scored the tying goal with 18 seconds left in the second period and the eventual game-winner just over five minutes into the third period as Boston improved to 11-0-5 in its last 16 meetings with Carolina. The Hurricanes haven't beaten the Bruins in regulation since April 2013.

David Pastrnak scored and Patrice Bergeron had three assists for the Bruins. Jaroslav Halak made 42 saves.

Micheal Ferland and Dougie Hamilton scored for the Hurricanes, who have lost five of seven after a 4-0-1 start. Sebastian Aho recorded an assist for the 12th straight game, tying the NHL record held by Wayne Gretzky and Ken Linseman for most consecutive games with an assist to open a season.

Scott Darling stopped 28 shots in his first start of the season after returning from an ankle injury.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Tyler Bertuzzi scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period and Jimmy Howard had 34 saves for Detroit.

Dylan Larkin got an empty-net goal - his second tally of the night - with 43 seconds left to cap the scoring and give Detroit its second straight win after losing nine of first 11.

Nineteen-year-old Michael Rasmussen got his first NHL goal and Anthony Mantha also scored for the Red Wings, who snapped the Blue Jackets' two-game winning streak.

Columbus goalie Joonas Korpisalo, who made his third straight start, had a horrific 13+ minutes, giving up three goals on Detroit's first seven shots. Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 23 saves.

Josh Anderson, Markus Nutivaara and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for the Blue Jackets.

FLAMES 2, SABRES 1, OT

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Matthew Tkachuk scored with 55.3 seconds left in the third period, Johnny Gaudreau followed with an overtime goal and Calgary rallied past Buffalo.

David Rittich made 28 saves for the Flames, who have won two straight.

Center Jack Eichel put the Sabres on the board first with a power-play goal with 3:30 left in the first period. Carter Hutton was terrific for Buffalo throughout, coming up just short of his first shutout as a Sabre. He made 36 saves.

The Sabres have points in five straight games (3-0-2) for the first time since a nine-game point streak in 2012.

LIGHTNING 8, DEVILS 3

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Brayden Point had a career-high five points with a goal and four assists, defenseman Braydon Coburn scored twice, and Tampa Bay rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat New Jersey.

Steven Stamkos got his 350th career goal and added two assists for Tampa Bay, which was coming off a 3-1-1 trip. Nikita Kucherov had two goals and an assist, and Tyler Johnson and Ryan McDonagh had the other Lightning goals. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves.

Miles Wood, Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri scored for the Devils, who started a seven-game trip. Keith Kinkaid stopped 31 of 38 shots before being replaced five minutes into the third by Cory Schneider, who allowed a goal on six shots in his first game after offseason hip surgery.

STARS 4, CANADIENS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Devin Shore had a goal and two assists, Ben Bishop stopped 34 shots for Dallas.

Esa Lindell and Miro Heiskanen also scored, and Alexander Radulov added an empty-netter for Dallas, which won on the road for the first time this season. This was the second stop on the Stars' six-game road trip.

Brendan Gallagher scored for the Canadiens, and Carey Price stopped 18 shots.

PREDATORS 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Ryan Hartman scored twice in a 57-second span and Juuse Saros made 23 saves to lead Nashville.

Calle Jarnkrok and Viktor Arvidsson also scored, and Kevin Fiala had a pair of assists for the Predators, who have won two of their last three.

Reilly Smith had the lone goal for Vegas, which has lost three of its last four.

WILD 4, OILERS 3

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Mikael Granlund scored with 5:48 left, Eric Staal had a goal and two assists, and Minnesota beat Edmonton.

Grandlund sneaked a power-play goal past netminder Cam Talbot for his sixth of the season. The game had been tied at 3 since Staal scored on a power play late in the second period.

Zach Parise and Jared Spurgeon also scored for the Wild (7-3-2), who have won six of seven.

Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Alex Chiasson scored for the Oilers (6-4-1), who ended a three-game winning streak.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) Hard to believe that Sunday night’s Packer-Patriot game will be only second time that Aaron Rodgers-Tom Brady have faced each other in a regular season game. Green Bay won the first meeting, 26-21 at home four years ago.

12) Giants’ backup QB Kyle Lauletta was arrested in New Jersey Tuesday morning for a third-degree offense of eluding police as well as obstructing justice and resisting arrest. Lauletta has a history of dangerous driving, according to the Weehawken PD in New Jersey.

The kid hasn’t taken an NFL snap, but drives a Jaguar and apparently not very well; he wasn’t at practice Tuesday, so doubtful he replaces Eli Manning anytime soon.

11) Ben Roethlisberger is playing thru a broken LEFT index finger; non-throwing hand makes it whole lot better, but I’m sure that taking snaps from center still hurts like hell.

10) NFL trades at the deadline Tuesday:

— Broncos traded WR DeMaryus Thomas to the Texans, who they play Sunday.
— Rams acquired pass rusher Dante Fowler from Jacksonville.
— Eagles acquired WR Golden Tate from Detroit.
— Packers traded RB Ty Montgomery to Houston.

9) Buffalo Bills’ QB Derek Anderson (concussion) is out Sunday, meaning that Nathan Peterman gets another start. Line opened at 8.5, is up to 9.5 as I type this (10 at the Wynn), By kickoff on Sunday, line could get to 11 or 12— not lot of support for Peterman out there.

Matt Barkley was signed to be Buffalo’s backup QB; Terrelle Pryor was also signed; he could be a wildcat QB, seeing how he once played QB for the Raiders, before moving to WR. Going to be a long couple months for Bills coaches/fans.

8) Denver QB Case Keenum was with the Texans in 2014; apparently that year coach Bill O’Brien told Keenum that he “would never be more than a 3rd string NFL QB.”

Now that Keenum is making $18M a year playing for the Broncos, wonder what he’ll say to O’Brien Sunday when the Texans visit Denver?

7) A college football player at Maryland passed away during off-season workouts; the coach was suspended, but Tuesday DJ Durkin got his job back, and not everyone is happy about it.

When Durkin addressed the players for the first time, several players walked out, including some starters. Saturday’s home game with Michigan State should be interesting.

6) Marlins’ catcher JT Realmuto has let it be known that he wants to be traded, and will not sign a long-term deal with Miami. He is by far their best player, should bring back a pretty good haul. Good catchers are hard to find.

5) Chicago White Sox turned down P James Shields’ 2019 option, paid him $2M to go away; same thing for Milwaukee with Mike Moustakas, Joakim Soria ($1M each).

4) This isn’t a criticism or a complaint, just a statement of fact: 41.9% of runs scored this in postseason scored on home runs; during the season, 40.3% of runs scored via taters.

3) I don’t think Stephen Curry is getting enough credit for how much he has helped basketball, as a whole; kids see how great a shooter he is and they work more on their games, and now shooting has become so much better. Skilled basketball players are way more fun to watch.

Curry isn’t a dunker; he isn’t huge (6-3, 190), but he is incredibly skilled because he works his butt off on those skills, and that has caught on all over the country. Good for him.

2) Klay Thompson was 14-24 from the arc Monday night in Golden State’s 149-124 win over the Bulls, who are not good. 14 treys is one game is an all-time NBA record. Coming into the game, Thompson was 5-36 from the arc for the season.

Golden State led the Bulls 92-50 at halftime…..at HALFTIME!!!!!

How about competing? Chicago has an awful team…..embarrassing.

1) On NBA.TV, Isiah Thomas was killing the Bulls at halftime; Chicago’s own PR people put out a tweet mocking the team’s first half. No bueno.
