Kadri scores 1st goal, Leafs beat Jets

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Nazem Kadri had his first goal of the season and John Tavares, Kasperi Kapanen and Tyler Ennis also scored in the Toronto Maple Leafs' 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night.

Frederik Andersen stopped 38 shots to help Toronto snap a two-game losing streak to improve to 7-3-0.

Nikolaj Ehlers and Mark Scheifele scored for the Jets, and Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves. The Jets were 4-1-1 on a six-game homestand, leaving them 6-3-1 overall.

The teams will meet again Saturday night in Toronto.

LIGHTNING 1, AVALANCHE 0

DENVER (AP) - Nikita Kucherov scored on a power play with 13:36 remaining, Andrei Vasilevskiy outperformed Semyon Varlamov in a goaltender showdown, and Tampa Bay beat Colorad.

Kucherov lined in a pass from Steven Stamkos for his 150th career goal. This after Kucherov nearly scored late in the second period, only to have the puck glance off a stick.

Vasilevskiy turned back 23 shots for his 13th NHL shutout. Varlamov made 23 saves.

PANTHERS 3, ISLANDERS 2, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Mike Hoffman scored a power-play goal 33 seconds into overtime to lift Florida past New York.

Frank Vatrano and Evgenii Dadonov added goals, and James Reimer made 20 saves. Brock Nelson and Jordan Eberle scored for New York.

CANUCKS 3, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2, SO

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Markus Granlund scored in the shootout, leading Vancouver past Vegas.

Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped all four shots he face in the shootout, and made 33 saves.

Bo Horvat kept his hot streak going, scoring both of Vancouver's goals. He now has nine points (seven goals, two assists) in the last nine games.

Max Pacioretty and Ryan Reaves scored for the Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 of 26 shots.

13) Cam Newton’s Sunday in Philadelphia:
Quarters 1-3: 9-of-17, 68 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs, not much of anything
4th quarter: 16-22, 201 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs— He looked like Dan Fouts

Once he got hot, the Panthers were unstoppable, but it was like someone flipped the on-switch and he started playing better.

12) Denver Broncos released backup QB Chad Kelly after he was arrested on trespassing charges Monday night. He was forcibly removed from the players’ Halloween party before he entered another person’s home where he didn’t belong.

11) There are whispers coming out of Ohio that at this time next year, Urban Meyer could be coaching the Cleveland Browns. We’ll see about that; not sure how Meyer would do dealing with the losing NFL coaches do, much more than college coaches.

10) College basketball starts November 6; on Opening Night, 52 D-I teams play a non-D-I opponent, which is embarrassing. Last year, D-I teams went 453-11 against non-D-I teams.

9) Darius Bazley is a young man who signed to play basketball at Syracuse this winter, but he won’t do that or play in the G-League, instead he is going to train on his own— he has signed an endorsement contract with New Balance, which will play him at least $1M.

Bazley will also intern at the company’s marketing, digital, footwear and apparel departments from January to March. Chances are he will go from April 2018 to July 2019 without playing in a competitive basketball game. Not sure how that is a good idea for his development as a player, but good luck to him.

8) Raiders supposedly turned down a 2nd round pick from the Eagles for Amari Cooper, before dealing him to the Cowboys Monday; Jon Gruden talked to the team Wednesday about the trade, but that seems kind of late, no? The trade was Monday.

7) Los Angeles Angels hired former Tiger skipper Brad Ausmus as their next manager.

6) This is just the third World Series where all four starting pitchers in Games 1-2 were lefty:

1963 – Koufax vs Ford, Podres vs Downing
1973 – Matlack vs Holtzman, Koosman vs Blue
2018 – Kershaw vs Sale, Ryu vs Price

5) James Harden left Houston’s 100-89 loss in Utah Wednesday with a hamstring issue that he says “isn’t serious). Harden missed seven games LY with a similar injury.

4) Nets 102, Cavaliers 86— Cleveland coach Tyrone Lue coached in the NBA Finals the last two years, but the Cavs are 0-4 already and Lue might get fired before Christmas. Losing to the Nets by 16 at home isn’t a good sign.

3) Red Sox 4, Dodgers 2— None of LA’s top four home run hitters have started a game in this WS yet, because they’re all lefty and God forbid a lefty hitter face a lefty pitcher.

2) Rams signed WR Austin Proehl to the practice squad, which sounds like an obscure note, except if you’re a Ram fan, the Phoehl name is royalty— Austin’s dad Ricky Proehl caught the game-winning TD pass in the 2000 NFC title game the year the Rams won the Super Bowl, and he also caught a TD pass in the Super Bowl two years later.

1) According to Psychology Living magazine, being sarcastic on a regular basis can add up to three years to your life, which means you’re stuck with me for three more years than you thought you were. Sarcasm is extremely healthy for the mind. Ha!!!

Vegas signs suspended D Nate Schmidt to $35.7 million deal

LAS VEGAS (AP) Suspended defenseman Nate Schmidt and the Vegas Golden Knights agreed to a $35.7 million, six-year contract extension Wednesday that runs through the 2024-25 season.

The team announced the move late Wednesday night after losing 3-2 to the Vancouver Canucks in a shootout. Schmidt's new deal is worth $5.95 million per year.

The 27-year-old Schmidt was banned 20 games last month for violating the NHL's performance-enhancing drug policy. He can return to the Golden Knights on Nov. 18.

''He is the kind of defenseman that every team in this league is looking for now,'' Vegas general manager George McPhee said. ''He is unique, excellent defensively and has become a shutdown defenseman for us playing against the other clubs' top players. But he also brings a lot of pace to the game and he brings offense.''

Schmidt led the Western Conference champions in ice time last season at 22:14 per game. He had five goals, 31 assists and 19 penalty minutes in 76 games. He added three goals and four assists with four penalty minutes in 20 playoff games for the expansion Golden Knights, who lost to the Washington Capitals in the Stanley Cup Final.

In five NHL seasons, Schmidt has 13 goals, 66 assists and 64 penalty minutes in 276 career games. The native of Minnesota was selected by Vegas from Washington during the 2017 expansion draft.

''He means a lot,'' coach Gerard Gallant said. ''He's a top player for us. He's done a great job playing defense for us last year. Obviously he got a real nice contract that he deserves, and we miss him a lot. So he's a big player for our group and we're happy to have him for long term.''

Schmidt insisted he didn't intentionally take a banned substance and couldn't have gotten any performance benefit from the ''trace amount'' that got into his system.

He and the Golden Knights released statements disagreeing with the penalty, though neither specified the substance. Schmidt said one of the experts testifying on his behalf at the appeal hearing likened the amount to a pinch of salt in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The appeal, which was heard by a neutral arbitrator, was denied.

Chara, Halak lead Bruins past Flyers, 3-0

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Patric Hornqvist and Phil Kessel each scored twice and the Pittsburgh Penguins pounded the Calgary Flames 9-1 on Thursday night.

Sidney Crosby, Bryan Rust, Jack Johnson, Jake Guentzel and Matt Cullen also scored, and Matt Murray made 38 saves to help the Penguins improve to 5-1-2 overall and 3-0 on a four-game Canadian trip.

Crosby has scored three times in his last two games after going six without a goal to start this season. Evgeni Malkin had a pair of assists to extend his point streaks to six straight games.

James Neal spoiled Murray's shutout bid late in the third period.

Flames starter Mike Smith was pulled for David Rittich midway through the second period after allowing six goals on 21 shots. Rittich turned away 12 of 15 shots.

BRUINS 3, FLYERS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Zdeno Chara scored twice, Jaroslav Halak stopped 26 shots in Boston's victory over Philadelphia.

Halak had his second shutout and 44th of his career.

Jake DeBrusk also scored to help the Bruins improve to 6-0-2 in their last eight against Philadelphia and 9-0-1 in the last 10 meetings in Boston. The Bruins improved to 4-0 at home, where they last played Oct. 13 in an 8-2 rout of the Detroit Red Wings.

PREDATORS 4, DEVILS 3, OT

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Kyle Turris made a length of the ice rush and snapped a shot past Keith Kinkaid 3:35 into overtime to lift Nashville past New Jersey.

Viktor Arvidsson, Filip Forsberg and Yannick Weber also scored for the Predators, and Jusse Saros made 33 saves to help send the Devils to their third straight loss.

Nico Hischier scored twice, and Damon Severson added a goal for the Devils.

BLACKHAWKS 4, RANGERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Nick Schmaltz set up Alexandre Fortin's tiebreaking goal in the second period in Chicago's victory over New York.

Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Alex DeBrincat also scored to help Chicago win for the third time in four games, Corey Crawford made 18 saves in his fourth game after suffering a concussion last year.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Rookie Evan Bouchard scored his first goal, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist and Edmonton beat Washington.

Alex Chiasson and Connor McDavid also scored, and Cam Talbot made 31 saves. Andre Burakovsky scored and Braden Holtby stopped 28 shots for the Capitals.

BLUE JACKETS 7, BLUES 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Boone Jenner and Anthony Duclair each scored twice and Columbus overcame a two-goal deficit to beat St. Louis.

LAS VEGAS (AP) J.T. Miller scored his third goal of the season, Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 on Friday.

Tyler Johnson and Brayden Point also scored for Tampa Bay. The Lightning are 6-0-1 in their last seven to improve to 7-1-1.

Shea Theodore and William Karlsson scored for Vegas, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 20 saves.

Ten games into their inaugural season, Vegas was 8-2-0. It didn't lose its fifth game until Nov. 7. Now, the defending Western Conference champions are 4-5-1 and sixth in the Pacific Division.

JETS 2, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien got his 500th career point when he snapped a tie with 6:45 left, and Winnipeg beat Detroit.

Winnipeg won for the fourth time in five games. Kyle Connor scored in the second period, and Laurent Brossoit stopped 27 shots.

Andreas Athanasiou scored for Detroit and Jimmy Howard made 38 saves. Red Wings defenseman Mike Green made his season debut after recovering from a virus that attacked his liver.

HURRICANES 4, SHARKS 3, SO

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Brock McGinn scored in regulation and had the lone shootout goal in Carolina's victory over San Jose.

Carolina outshot San Jose 23-6 from start of the second period to the midpoint of the third and finished with a 41-23 edge. It was the first time the Sharks had been outshot this season.

McGinn, Teuvo Teravainen and Dougie Hamilton scored for Carolina in the second period, and Teravainen assisted on Hamilton's goal. Antti Suomela, Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl scored for the Sharks.

Petr Mrazek made 20 saves for Carolina, and Aaron Dell stopped 38 saves for San Jose.

AVALANCHE 6, SENATORS 3

DENVER (AP) - Gabriel Landeskog broke a tie in Colorado's four-goal third period and the Avalanche beat Ottawa to spoil a two-goal performance from Matt Duchene in his return to Denver.

Landeskog gave Colorado the lead for good by knocking in his ninth goal of the season off a feed from Mikko Rantanen. Colorado outscored the Senators 6-1 after falling behind 2-0 midway through the first.

Samuel Girard, Carl Soderberg, Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Nieto also scored for Colorado.

Ryan Dzingel also scored for Ottawa.
