Grand Salami - October

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Rantanen scored twice, leads Avalanche past Flyers 4-1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Mikko Rantanen had two goals, Matt Nieto and Gabriel Landeskog also scored, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Monday night.

The Avalanche continued their early-season hot streak and finished 3-0-1 on their four-game road trip. Landeskog had a hat trick on the trip against New Jersey and clinched this one with his eighth goal of the season early in the third period.

Semyon Varlamov was solid in net and stopped 37 shots.

The Flyers suffered their third home loss of the season.

Rantanen needed only 3:23 to beat Brian Elliott for his third goal of the season and the quick lead. Nathan MacKinnon set up Rantanen for the power-play score, and they became the first players in franchise history with concurrent nine-game point streaks to start the season.

Nolan Patrick scored a third-period goal for the Flyers. Brian Elliott finished with 29 saves.

HURRICANES 3, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Michael Ferland scored in his fourth straight game and Sebastian Aho had an assist and set a franchise record for points in consecutive games to start a season as Carolina snapped a three-game losing streak.

Defenseman Justin Faulk also scored, and Jordan Martinook added an empty-net goal for the Hurricanes.

Petr Mrazek, who was drafted by Detroit in 2010 and played a number of seasons with the Red wings, made 20 saves.

Sebastian assisted on Ferland's second-period goal. The assist stretched his season-opening points streak to nine games (four goals and 10 assists), surpassing the franchise record of eight by Victor Rask (2016-17).

Andreas Athanasiou scored for Detroit.

JETS 5, BLUES 4, OT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Bryan Little tied it late in the third period and Jacob Trouba scored in overtime to help Winnipeg overcome a two-goal deficit.

Trouba took a pass from Kyle Connor and shot into an open side of the net behind goalie Jake Allen. It was Trouba's first goal of the season.

Mark Scheifele scored twice and Ben Chiarot added a goal Winnipeg.

Ryan O'Reilly had a goal and two assists for St. Louis, and David Perron, Vince Dunn and Colton Parayko also scored.

Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves for Winnipeg (6-2-1), which has points in five straight games (4-0-1).

Allen stopped 31 shots for the Blues (2-3-3), who finished a three-game trip (1-1-1) through Canada.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) Oakland Raiders traded Khahil Mack to the Bears for two #1 picks before the season, then started season 1-5; Monday they traded WR Omari Cooper to Dallas, for another #1 pick, as they continue to plot for the future, when they’ll be playing home games in Las Vegas.

Raiders now have three #1 picks in the 2019 Draft, which will be held in Nashville; too bad it isn’t in Las Vegas, because Raiders are going to be the center of attention. Raiders also have two #1 picks in the 2020 Draft.

12) One of the values of Twitter is getting lot of diverse opinions; almost everyone said that the Raiders did very well getting a #1 pick for Cooper, but then on Monday Night Football, those guys are all saying the Cowboys made out on the deal. What gives?

Ed Werder, who has covered the Cowboys for decades, pointed out that this is the third time Jerry Jones has traded draft picks for a star WR— the other two WR’s he got were Joey Galloway and Roy Williams. When your owner/GM is in his 70’s, draft picks tend to mean less.

10) Denver Broncos haven’t had consecutive losing seasons since 1971 (4-9-1) and ’72 (5-9); they were 5-11 LY, are 3-4 this year. I’m guessing they’ll be a coaching change if they don’t finish at least .500 this season.

9) Only three NFL teams haven’t played a regular season game outside this country; the Eagles, Packers, and Panthers. Philly plays Jacksonville in London this week.

8) Would Auburn really cough up $32M to tell football coach Gus Malzahn to take a hike? Malzahn is 28-19 in conference games; the guy was a high school coach not that long ago, but do people at Auburn really have $32M lying around to get rid of a fairly successful coach? Wow.

7) Oklahoma Sooners haven’t lost consecutive regular season games since 1999; they’re 39-0 SU in the games following their last 39 regular season losses.

6) According to Astros beat reporter Brian McTaggart, Houston 2B Jose Altuve had surgery Friday to repair a patella (kneecap) avulsion fracture in his right knee. According to the Mayo Clinic website, an avulsion fracture occurs when a small chunk of bone attached to a tendon or ligament gets pulled away from the main part of the bone.

Altuve played thru that injury since August 21, hitting .276; he is one tough dude.

5) Cincinnati Reds showed very little imagination and hired David Bell as their new manager. Bell is a Cincinnati native and the son of current Reds executive Buddy Bell, and grandson of Gus Bell, both of whom played for Cincinnati.

David Bell played for seven big league teams, but never for the Reds.

Weird thing is that Bell doesn’t get to pick his own coaches; he will make recommendations, but the front office has the final say. Being a manager isn’t as big a deal as it used to be.

4) If you read this space a lot, you know I love basketball, and I have the NBA package on DirecTV- its fun to watch the games, but it is becoming more difficult to actually follow the league.

Everyone who plays/coaches in the league is pretty rich or really rich, but so few of them appear to be remotely happy— so much anger, and the season is a week old.

I mean, Rondo/Paul got into a scuffle in their game Saturday night , and then Rondo’s girlfriend shoves Paul’s wife afterwards; seriously? Time for everyone to grow up some.

Chris Paul got a two-game suspension for the fracas, that’ll cost him $491,962; the others, much less. Lakers’ Brandon Ingram ran into the scuffle and threw a punch; he got a longer suspension than either Paul or Rondo, but he doesn’t make as much $$$ as they do.

3) College basketball has these “closed/secret” scrimmages between teams; I don’t understand why they’re kept secret, when there is money to be made showing them on TV.

This weekend, North Carolina/Villanova scrimmaged, as did Minnesota/Creighton. Teams all over the country do it, but it is information being hidden and that hurts the sport.

2) Weird doings at the U of Arizona; back in January, the Wildcats fired football coach Rich Rodriguez after six years after a sexual harassment allegation against the coach.

Kevin Sumlin is the new coach; Arizona is 3-5 after a 31-30 loss at UCLA Saturday, when they used their backup QB in place of injured starter Khalil Tate- that backup is Rhett Rodriguez, son of the former coach.

The kid played alright; 15-34 for 231 yards, with two TD’s, two INT’s, but it had to be so odd, a kid playing for the coach who replaced his fired father.

1) Before Rodriguez got the Arizona job, he worked a season in the CBS Sports studio doing college football Saturdays; as soon as the Wildcats hired him, he was off recruiting; the first day CBS Sports had a show after Rodriguez quit, the crew had RichRod on as a guest via remote from Tucson.

Here’s the thing; the whole one-hour show, they left the chair Rodriguez had sat in all season empty, thats the regard they held him in. After that I always rooted for his teams. Saturday night, I was rooting for his son.

A head-to-head battle featuring two of the game's best players goes Tuesday in Edmonton when Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins take on Connor McDavid and the Oilers. Pouncing Panthers

The Florida Panthers look to take advantage of Henrik Lundqvist being on the bench Tuesday night, and continue their recent success playing at Madison Square Garden, as they take on the Rangers. The road team is 5-1 in last 6 meetings between these two teams and while the Panthers haven’t looked like a playoff contender just yet, they are miles ahead of the Rangers on paper. New York is 1-9 in last 10 against Atlantic division opponents and so far they have just five points in eight games and are looking like a lottery team. Florida is 7-2 in their last nine road games against teams with a losing home record and are 5-1 in their last six games on two day of rest. They keep those trends moving in their favor with a convincing win on the road Tuesday night.

Superstar Showdown

Rogers Place in Edmonton will feature two of the league’s best players going head-to-head Tuesday night as Connor McDavid and the Oilers host Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. Much discussion has been made lately regarding which of the two is the league’s top player and, while McDavid might have the edge in terms of talent at the moment, it is Crosby who has the championships - and the Pens have a shot again this season. Pittsburgh is 16-5 in their last 21 meetings with the Oilers and they have won 4 games in a row in Edmonton. Look for that to continue on Tuesday night as the Penguins come out on top in a contest that is sure to feature plenty of offence and a few highlight reel plays.

Special Teams

Chicago has been one of the highest scoring teams in the NHL this season, but surprisingly most of their goals have come at even strength as they have netted just two goals at 5-on-4 and two more at 4-on-4. The Hawks take on an Anaheim team that is 24th in the league in goals per game and 12th in terms of goals against, which factors into what should be a very low scoring affair between these two sides. Anaheim has gone Under in 14 of their last 19 road games while Chicago has gone Under in four of their last five after a home loss of three or more goals. Take this into consideration and play the Under on Tuesday night.

Extra Attackers

The Stars have been one of the best power play units in the league so far this season, operating at 33.3% clip through seven games, and will look to take advantage of a woeful Kings penalty kill Tuesday. Los Angeles sits 26th in the league with a very pedestrian 71.4% efficiency when short handed, and if they give the Stars too many chances with the man advantage it could come back to haunt them. Dallas has had their issues with the Kings with a 6-13 record at home in their last 19 meetings, and the road team has won 4 in a row in this series, but if L.A. gets into penalty trouble this one could be over early.

Goalie Profile

Alex Georgiev New York Rangers

The Rangers have gotten off to a slow start but it doesn’t fall on the shoulders of veteran goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. "King Henrik" has a serviceable 2.55 goals against average playing behind a team that has scored just 18 goals in 8 games, meaning the former Vezina Trophy winner is doing all he can to keep the Rangers in games. However, the Blue Shirts are starting backup Alex Georgiev on Tuesday night against Florida and that is a night-and-day transition as the Bulgarian national is among the league’s worst backups. Georgiev gave up seven goals in his only start this season and has a career .908 save percentage and a 3.56 GAA. Georgiev’s numbers in the AHL haven’t been much better and against a Florida side that has a ton of weapons up front that have been held in check so far this season, look for this to be their coming out party.

Injury Update:

The Columbus Blue Jackets get a huge shot in the arm on Tuesday night as defenceman Seth Jones will make his season debut after missing the first seven games due to injury. Jones chipped in with 16 goals and 57 points last season and helps a Columbus blue line that has given up 27 goals in seven games - that puts them 24th in the NHL in that category. The return of Jones should help Columbus’ defence in a big way while providing a spark on the power play and at even strength.

Betting trends of note:

* Sharks are 3-13 in their last 16 in Nashville. The Predators and Sharks are pretty evenly matched but this doesn’t look like a great spot for San Jose as they can’t seem to find a way to win at Bridgestone Arena.

* Under is 18-7-1 in last 26 meetings in Chicago with Anaheim and is 19-9-5 overall in this series. Add in the fact that Chicago can’t score on the power play and the Ducks don’t concede a ton of goals and this one looks like a low scoring contest.

Fischer hat trick sends Coyotes past CBJ

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Sidney Crosby made a slick move through two defenders, skated through the slot and lifted a backhander into the net at 2:12 of overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 6-5 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

Crosby opened the scoring in the first period and his second goal of the season was the winner. Crosby moved from the left boards, slipped the puck through a defender's legs, moved past Oilers goalie Cam Talbot and lifted a backhand shot over Talbot's glove for the win.

Jamie Oleksiak and Patric Hornqvist also had two-goal games for the Penguins, who have won two straight.

Leon Draisaitl and Alex Chiasson each scored twice, while Connor McDavid had the other for the Oilers (3-3-1), who lost their second straight.

Matt Murray had 41 saves in the win, while Talbot kicked out 25 shots in the loss.

COYOTES 4, BLUE JACKETS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Christian Fischer got his first career hat trick, Darcy Kuemper stopped 35 shots and Arizona rallied to beat Columbus.

Fischer scored in all three periods to help the Coyotes beat Columbus for the first time in the last seven tries dating to 2015. Derek Stepan got the primary assist on all three.

Dylan Strome also scored for Arizona as backup Kuemper got his first win of the season in two starts.

Pierre Luc-Dubois scored and Sergei Bobrovsky had 22 saves in what was mostly a lackluster game for the Blue Jackets, even though they had 10 more shots on goal.

Columbus defenseman Seth Jones made his season debut after spraining a medial collateral ligament in his right knee on Sept. 25. He was expected to miss up to six weeks but made it back in less than a month. He logged four shots on goal.

RANGERS 5, PANTHERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Mats Zuccarello and Mika Zibanejad each scored twice and New York snapped a two-game losing streak.

Kevin Hayes also scored, Neal Pionk added two assists and Alexandar Georgiev made 36 saves for New York, which collected its third win of the young season.

Vincent Trocheck and Mike Hoffman each scored their third goals of the season, and Jonathan Huberdeau had two assists for the Panthers, who fell to 1-3-3 despite holding the lead in each game.

Michael Hutchinson stopped 15 shots in his fourth game for Florida.

CANADIENS 3, FLAMES 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Jeff Petry and Jonathan Drouin each had a goal and an assist as Montreal won for the fourth time in five games.

Brendan Gallagher also scored for the Canadiens, who have lost once in eight games this season. Carey Price made 21 saves and tied Patrick Roy for second place in team history for most wins by a goaltender with 289.

Michael Frolik and Elias Lindholm scored for the Flames, and David Rittich made 37 saves.

BRUINS 4, SENATORS 1

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - David Pastrnak had two goals and two assists, Patrice Bergeron added a goal and two assists for Boston.

The Bruins (5-2-2) snapped a three-game skid and beat the Senators for the second time this season. David Krejci scored his second of the season, and Tuukka Rask made 38 saves.

Thomas Chabot scored the lone goal for the Senators (4-3-1), who saw their three-game winning streak end to wrap a season high five-game homestand with a 3-2-0 record as they depart for a three-game trip Thursday.

Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots.

STARS 4, KINGS 2

DALLAS (AP) - Jason Spezza and John Klingberg each had a goal and an assist, and Dallas snapped a three-game losing streak.

Blake Comeau and Tyler Pitlick scored their first goals of the season. Eight Dallas players had at least one point; Devin Shore finished with two assists. Ben Bishop made 31 saves for Dallas, which never trailed.

Anze Kopitar and Tyler Toffoli scored second-period goals for the Kings, who lost their fifth straight. Jonathan Quick stopped 19 shots for Los Angeles.

BLACKHAWKS 3, DUCKS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Patrick Kane scored in the third period, Corey Crawford made 24 saves and Chicago handed Anaheim its third straight loss.

Brandon Saad also scored his first two goals of the season, helping Chicago improve to 1-1 on a three-game homestand.

Rickard Rakell scored for Anaheim, and John Gibson finished with 35 saves. The Ducks have just four goals during their slide.

SHARKS 5, PREDATORS 4

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Brent Burns scored with 2:52 remaining to cap a rally from a late two-goal deficit, and San Jose beat Nashville.

The Sharks cooled off the NHL's hottest team, ending the Predators' five-game winning streak.

Tomas Hertl, Timo Meier, Brenden Dillon, and Joe Pavelski also scored for the Sharks, who won their third straight.

Nashville's Viktor Arvidsson had two goals and one assist. Filip Forsberg and Craig Smith added goals.

San Jose's Martin Jones had 25 saves. The Predators' Juuse Saros finished with 27 saves.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

13) According to ESPN.com‘s Darren Rovell, at William Hill sportsbooks in Nevada, 73% of the money on Monday night’s NFL game was on the Falcons, so the swing on the Giants’ 2-point conversion with 0:05 left was large in favor of the house.

Would be fun to know nation-wide, how much $$$ changed hands with Giants covering the spread like that. Had to be a huge chunk of change, right???

12) The greatest compliment any coach can give to a player is to have him on the court/field at the end of a close game; actions speak a hell of a lot louder than words.

Wizards-Trailblazers were 108-108 in last minute Monday night; Portland had Nick Stauskus on the court— Stauskus didn’t start, but he played 30:00 and he finished, tying the game with a 3 late in 4th quarter. Stauskus scored 15 points and had 8 rebounds. When a coach lets you finish, that shows true belief in your ability.

11) While we’re somewhere near the subject, I think assists on 3-point shots should count as 1.5 assists, since they’re 3-point assists, not 2-point assists. Same goes for passes that lead to made foul shots.

10) Since 2001, New England is 38-37 (.507) when losing the turnover battle.

9) From Ralph Michaels: Jacksonville Jaguars are only the 11th team since 1989 to lose back-to-back games as a favorite while scoring 7 or fewer points in both games.

7) NC State 103, Maryland 100 in OT— 1974 ACC title game was one of the greatest college basketball games ever played, just a fantastic game that helped change the future of college hoops. I was 14 years old and remember lying on my bed listening to the game on radio— 103-100 with no shot clock or 3’s.

People don’t realize; back then, only one team from each conference made the NCAA’s, so the loser of the ACC tournament didn’t even make the NCAA tournament. NC State was #2 in the country, Maryland was #3 in the country, so the ’74 ACC title game was an elimination game just to get in the tournament!!!!

In 2002, Maryland won the national title in basketball after losing in the ACC tournament, so the bigger tournament has obviously proven to be a much better thing.

6) Former NFL special teams star Steve Tasker is a sideline reporter for CBS now; when he broke into the NFL in 1987, Jerry Glanville was the Houston Oilers’ defensive coordinator.

31 years later, Glanville is an assistant coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL, where one of the Ti-Cat players is Tasker’s son Luke.

5) When Wade Phillips started coaching in the NFL, neither Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan had been born yet.

1) Random political numbers; as of October 2017, Gallup polling found that 31% of Americans identified as Democrat, 24% identified as Republican, and 42% as Independent. I was curious about that at 5am one night, so I looked it up and now you know, too.
