The Jets were the league’s best first period team last year when it comes to goals in the opening frame. While the Blues were the second worst.

        READY FOR TAKEOFF

The Winnipeg Jets head into the season as one of the more popular selections to win the 2018-19 Stanley Cup and they begin their quest Thursday night on the road in St. Louis. Winnipeg has dominated this series taking five of the last six meetings in St. Louis and have won eight of their last 10 against the Blues overall. Connor Hellebuyck is coming off a Vezina Trophy nomination and should be in line for another run at some hardware as the Jets get a win to start the season.

        EARLY BLUES

Speaking of the Blues, they were the second worst team in the NHL in terms of first period goals and there is no indication that this season will change that. The Blues return much of their core from a season ago and they’ll be in tough against a Jets team who were the league’s best first period team last year. There is great value on the Jets moneyline in the opening 20 minutes as Winnipeg will continue their early game success while the Blues will struggle to find the back of the net.

        KEEP YOUR ENEMIES CLOSE

The Blue Jackets and Red Wings developed quite a rivalry before the Wings were shipped back to the Eastern Conference a few seasons ago and they renew hostilities on Thursday night for their respective season openers. This game figures to be a tight, hard fought battle and that plays right into Columbus’ hands and right out of Detroit’s. The Jackets have the better goaltender and had the league’s third best record in one-goal games last season while the Wings were dead last in that category. Take this into consideration when placing your bet on the Blue Jackets on Thursday night.

        FADING STAR

The Arizona Coyotes and Dallas Stars do battle in Texas on Thursday night, but for those in attendance looking for late game fireworks they best look elsewhere. The well documented offensive struggles for the Coyotes last season were lowlighted in the third period as they were third to last in the league in goals scored in the final frame. The Stars meanwhile have plenty of offensive fire power, but were too quiet in the final 20 minutes a season ago with the fifth worst mark in third period scoring. These two teams meet up on Thursday night and with these trends in mind and the early season rust bound to play a factor, be confident playing the under.

        GOALIE PROFILE

Antii Raanta, Arizona Coyotes: Raanta quietly had one of the best seasons in the league last year and in some circles was robbed of a nomination for the Vezina as the league’s best net minder. Raanta took over as the team’s starter just before the mid way point of the regular season and had the best goals against average among goaltenders who started at least 40 games with a sparkling 2.24 mark and a .930 save percentage. He has gone from a journeyman backup to Arizona’s answer in the crease and his play this season will be a huge determinant of the team’s success.

        KEY INJURY

The absence of one of Boston’s top defensemen, Torey Krug, should shift the style of play for the B’s in the first three weeks of the season. Without having the security blanket of Krug on the blue line the Bruins will alter their aggressiveness going forward and should be taken into consideration when playing the over for the Bruins early on. Boston plays the Caps on Wednesday before heading to Buffalo on Thursday. The under in both games is a great play.

        HAT TRICK TRENDS

        * The Over is 17-6 in Chicago’s last 23 road games. Ottawa has gone over in 5 of their last 6 games at Scotiabank Place. Take the over in the season opener for both teams in a goaltending matchup that should feature Cam Ward and Craig Anderson.

        * The Under is 7-1-1 in the last nine meetings between the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks. Both teams are among the league’s best in the defensive zone and a tough, low-scoring Pacific division classic is what we can expect on opening night.

        * The Over is 20-8-2 in Toronto’s last 30 against the Eastern Conference. The addition of John Tavares makes this Leafs team one of the most explosive offenses in the NHL and they will show why on Wednesday. Take the over as the Leafs should clip the mark on their own against a very bad Montreal team.

Capitals' winger Tom Wilson has been suspended 20 games for another vicious hit, this time on Blues' Oskar Sundqvist.
This is his 4th suspension in his last 105 games, including preseason and playoffs. He will forfeit $1.26 million.
Caps are -118 faves tonight vs. Bruins.
