    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Prop bets for tonight’s national championship game:

    — points scored by Luke Maye: over/under 6.5

    — points scored by Joel Berry: over/under 14.5

    — points scored by Jonathan Williams: over/under 9.5

    — points scored by Zach Collins: over/under 9.5

    — points scored in first half by Gonzaga: over/under 36

    — points scored in first half by North Carolina: over/under 36.5

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Happy Opening Day!!!

    13) Diamondbacks 6, Giants 5— SF bullpen blew two saves on Opening Day, ruining a great day by Madison Bumgarner, who struck out 11 and homered twice, the first pitcher ever to do that on Opening Day.

    12) Sat next to a guy Friday night who bet Mississippi State on the money line against UConn in the girls’ basketball semifinals. He put $10 on a parlay with MSU and South Carolina and he pocketed $345. He is a good guy and was excited; takes onions to bet against UConn.

    11) Some genius at a William Hill sports book risked $7,000 to win $100 making the exact opposite bet, taking UConn on the money line. I’m sure he assumed it was an easy $100, but he was wrong, with a capital W.

If someone ever writes a book on how NOT to gamble, this should be in Chapter 1.

    10) Watched the second half of the game without sound in the SouthPoint sports book; ESPN kept showing this guy cheering wildly for Miss State, I’m assuming it is a player’s husband, brother or boyfriend- turns out it was Dak Prescott, the Cowboys’ QB/Miss State alum. He was excited, even moreso than the guy who won $335 on the parlay.

    9) If you’re in Las Vegas, the sports book here at South Point is excellent, I’d rank it #2 in town behind the Westgate, but the food options are better here and the hotel is nicer.

    8) San Diego Padres are apparently starting the season with three Rule 5 players on their roster; those are minor leaguers plucked from other teams, but they have to stay in the majors all year or get offered back to their original team. Basically, they’re prospects who aren’t ready yet.

ESPN’s Keith Law says the only other team to carry three Rule 5 guys in one year were the 2003 Tigers, who went 43-119, but were in the playoffs three years later.

    7) Colorado Rockies start season with seven guys on the DL, which seems excessive even for baseball, where guys drop like flies.

    6) TV ratings for the Final Four Saturday were a huge success; much better games than last year. Gonzaga-UNC game figures to get good ratings, too.

    5) San Antonio Spurs have had a winning road record 20 years in a row, which is remarkable.

    4) If they ever make a movie about Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder, Andrew McCarthy has to play Snyder- they look so much alike they could be brothers.

    3) College hoop referee Ted Valentine worked his 10th Final Four Saturday, but his first since 2010; does that make him Comeback Ref of the Year?

    2) Youngest teams in the major leagues? Cincinnati Reds, then the Padres.

1— Madison Bumgarner has 16 career homers, most of any active pitcher; he has hit two HR’s off of two pitchers— Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. Not bad.

    Happy Opening Day, everyone!!!!

NHL betting cheat sheet and odds: No bite in these Sharks at home

The Sharks have been one of the weakest Over plays at home, entering the week at just 9-20-9 in their own arena.

Monte Andrews' NHL cheat sheet breaks down the best NHL betting notes so you can handicap the week like a pro, including the San Jose Sharks who finish their season on home ice where they have struggled to score all season long.

          Leafs Playoff-Bound?

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue their unlikely charge toward an Eastern Conference playoff berth as the NHL enters the final week of the regular season. The Leafs have five games to wrap up their schedule as they look to protect their third-place standing in the Atlantic Division heading into the week. Of note to bettors: Toronto will finish the regular season with four straight home games, and earned moneyline victories in the previous meetings against each of the teams it will host - Washington, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and Columbus. The Maple Leafs are 20-10-7 SU and 16-20-1 at home so far this season.

          No Bite in These Sharks

The San Jose Sharks also finish their regular season with a little home cooking, playing their final three games at SAP Center as they jockey for position in the crowded Western Conference. And for Under bettors, that means three more shots at capitalizing one one of the most bizarre trends in the league. The Sharks have been one of the weakest Over plays at home, entering the week at just 9-20-9 in their own arena. And on top of that, the three teams San Jose will face have all played more Unders than Overs this season entering Monday - Vancouver (30-34-14 O/U), Edmonton (29-42-7) and Calgary (34-35-10).

          Detroit's Dazzling Shootout Success

The Detroit Red Wings have just one more week of games standing between themselves and an incredible shootout run. The Red Wings enter the home stretch as the only team in the league without a shootout loss this season, going 8-0 through the first 78 games of the season. No other team this decade has won as many as five shootouts without a defeat. Detroit has four games left in its first non-playoff season since 1990, and three of those come against teams with winning shootout records on the season - the Ottawa Senators twice (5-3) and the Montreal Canadiens (3-2).

          Injury News

          * The Tampa Bay Lightning are hoping to have forward Steven Stamkos back in the lineup sometime this week as they frantically try to keep pace with the Boston Bruins for the second East wild-card spot. Stamkos has been limited to 17 games this season due to a knee injury, with the Lightning going 10-6-1 SU in those contests.

          * Forward John Tavares might have played his final game in a New York Islanders uniform. The free-agent-to-be will miss the remainder of the season with a hamstring, cutting short a frustrating campaign in which the 26-year-old finished with 28 goals and 38 assists in 77 games; the Isles have made the playoffs just three times in his eight seasons there.

          Player Notes

          * The NHL's Art Ross Trophy race is all but settled thanks to Edmonton Oilers mega-star Connor McDavid, who enters the week with a seven-point advantage over runner-up Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks. McDavid has saved his best for last, fashioning a 10-game point streak (six goals, 13 assists), during which the Oilers are 9-1-0 SU and 4-4-2 O/U.

          * Maple Leafs phenom Auston Matthews is on track to finish not only as the league's top rookies, but as one of the leading goal-scorers in the NHL. Matthews has a Maple Leafs rookie-record 38 goals going into the final week of the season; Toronto is 17-5-8 SU and 14-16 O/U in games in which Matthews has scored in 2016-17.

          * When it comes to predictability, Columbus netminder Sergei Bobrovsky has been one of the league's best in recent games. Bobrovsky has won nine consecutive decisions in games in which the Blue Jackets have been installed as the favorite, and has dropped three games in a row when Columbus has gone in as the underdog.

          Stanley Cup Futures

          * The Montreal Canadiens are a near lock to enter the postseason as the top team in the Atlantic Division. The surging Habs have won four consecutive games and own a seven-point lead over the second-place Boston Bruins; the Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators are both eight points behind. Montreal is sitting at +1,000 to win the Stanley Cup, according to Sports Interaction.

          * Montreal isn't the only team that has positioned itself well in the latter stages of the season. The Edmonton Oilers are back in the postseason for the first time in 11 years, and continue their charge toward first place in the Pacific Division as they carry a five-game winning streak into the final week of the season. Edmonton is installed at +1,500 to win its first Stanley Cup since 1990.

          * The Nashville Predators have a long road to hoe if they hope to secure their first-ever NHL championship. The Predators (+2,800) will enter the postseason as a Western Conference wild-card team if they can't find a way to surge past the St. Louis Blues, who own a two-point edge for third place in the Central Division and have a game in hand on Nashville.

          Over/Under Trends

          * Entering Monday, the Under play has been slightly stronger league-wide in 2016-17, with 522 Unders compared to just 505 Overs. Interestingly, overtime games have gone Under nearly 60 percent of the time this season, while non-overtime games have actually favored the Over play (51.9 percent).

          * The Blue Jackets are ending the season with a nice streak of low-scoring games, putting together five consecutive Unders prior to Sunday's push in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Washington. But Columbus' next two games come against teams who each have more than 40 Overs this season - Pittsburgh (45) and Winnipeg (41).
