      • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

        — Spurs 119, Lakers 98— San Antonio is a very quiet 45-13.

        — Clippers 124, Hornets 121 OT— Blake Griffin had 43 for the Clippers.

        — Thunder 118, Pelicans 110— DeMarcus Cousins got his 18th technical, has to sit out the next game.

        — Northern Kentucky 82, Valparaiso 78— Valpo’s best player is on crutches.

        — Monmouth 79, Iona 73- Hawks’ last loss was January 2 to St Peter’s.

        — Washington State 79, Washington 71— Markelle Fultz missed his third game with a bad knee.

        **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday

        13) Pretty soon the college basketball coaching carousel will start spinning, which begs the question: is it better to be a big fish in a small pond, or a smaller fish in a big pond?

Shaka Smart bolted VCU for Texas and more $$$, but now he is 30-32 in two years, 15-19 in conference games and Longhorn fans are wondering why Rick Barnes got fired.

Guys like Gregg Marshall (Wichita St), Eric Musselman (Nevada) and Archie Miller (Dayton) are winning big in smaller leagues and will surely get offers from schools like NC State, Missouri, Illinois or whatever other jobs open up, but they all make a lot of money now.

Is it worth it to coach in deeper waters for more money, when it is harder to win there?

        12) Watching Gonzaga lose at home to BYU late Saturday night, it occurs to you that they haven’t been tested enough by the lame WCC, which was way down this year, other than St Mary’s—even BYU is very young and isn’t as good as usual.

Gonzaga’s guards looked lost in the last few minutes, when the game was tight and a loss seemed possible. Zags hadn’t played a single-digit game since Dec 3, when they won by 7 over Arizona in Los Angeles. 84 days between close games isn’t that healthy for a team.

        11) San Antonio Spurs have had 20 consecutive seasons with a winning road record; that is really a great accomplishment.

        10) Arizona State 83, USC 82— ASU played starters 199 out of 200 minutes in their loss to UCLA Thursday; I’ve never seen that before. In this game, they played two subs, one 11:00, another 12:00, but they pulled out a win and improved to 7-10 in the Pac-12.

        9) Big West Conference is way down this year, but three of their four games Saturday went to overtime, and the fourth game ended 83-80, so solid night of entertainment in that league.

        8) Champ Week starts tonight, with four first-round games in the Atlantic Sun tourney at campus sites. Florida Gulf Coast is the #1 seed, Lipscomb the #2 seed.

Ohio Valley tournament will be next, starting on Wednesday.

        7) A U of Louisville sophomore thought he won $38,000 at a women’s basketball game Thursday by hitting a layup, foul shot, 3-pointer and half-court shot during a time-out, but he has been told he is ineligible to receive the prize because he played high school ball and the fine print of the contest says no one can collect if they played organized basketball within the last six years. Too bad- the sponsor would win back the $38K in goodwill if they gave the kid the $$$.

        6) San Diego State had a great running back this season, Donnel Pumphrey; the school honored the young man during a timeout in the Aztecs’ basketball game Wednesday, but there was one small problem.

Mr Pumphrey showed up wearing a Dodgers’ hat.

People in San Diego don’t like Los Angeles, and since the Chargers just bolted to LA, that feeling has ramped up a little bit, so Mr Pumphrey took some grief on social media for the hat. Took until the second half for someone at the arena to get him a red Aztecs’ cap.

        5) I’m a big fan of college basketball adopting the 8-second half-court rule; would encourage teams to press more and also to run the ball up the floor, instead of walking it up.

        4) Do you think Jack Nicklaus sits at home and quietly celebrates because Eldrick Woods’ career is in the dumper, which preserves Nicklaus’ record for most majors won?

        3) Toughing moment at Michigan State Sunday; senior Eron Harris blew his knee out earlier this year- his career is over, but he suited up for his last home game Sunday and with 0:11 left and the Spartans safely ahead, Harris checked into the game to get one last ovation.

He knelt down, which wasn’t easy with the big knee brace he had on, and kissed the Spartan logo at midcourt. I’m not sure the average fan realizes how much effort these kids put into their playing careers and how much it means to them. It was a pretty cool moment.

        2) I was trying to explain to a young person the other day what basketball was like before the shot clock; in short, it wasn’t as fun. Coaches could dominate the game; the game could have almost no flow at all. The shot clock and 3-point shot have made basketball a way better game.

Example: February 22, 1980— While the US Olympic hockey team was beating the Russians in the Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid, my college team was playing in the semifinals of their conference tournament, in Buffalo. People in the corner of the small gym were watching the hockey game on Canadian TV in the corner of the gym.

We lost the game that night in four overtimes; the team that won the tip of all four 5:00 OT’s held the ball for the last shot. I’m not kidding, it was that boring— tense is a better word.

In 1979, a North Carolina-Duke basketball game was 7-0 at halftime. Seriously.

1— Watching college hoop games this weekend, one thing is clear; people are tired. Season is a long one; players, coaches, and maybe most of all the officials are tired. Getting to Champ Week gives everyone a little jolt of energy.

            • NHL betting cheat sheet and odds: Matthews takes Tinseltown

Toronto rookie phenom Auston Matthews makes his first career visit to Los Angeles as the Maple Leafs continue their West Coast swing Thursday night against the Kings.

Our NHL cheat sheet breaks down the best NHL betting notes so you can handicap the week like a pro, including the Toronto Maple Leafs' young superstar Auston Matthews who makes his first visit to Los Angeles.

              Hello, Hanzal

Minnesota has made a splash ahead of the NHL trade deadline, and Wild fans will get their first look at the new acquisition as Martin Hanzal is expected to make his debut Monday night against visiting Los Angeles. Hanzal, who was acquired from Arizona over the weekend, should bolster the Wild's offense after recording 16 goals and 10 assists in 51 games with the Coyotes.

But it isn't like Minnesota needed much help: the Wild enter the week with the best record in the West, and have scored more goals (195) than any other team in the conference. That has helped Minnesota to a 30-21-8 O/U mark for the season.

              Matthews Takes Tinseltown

Toronto rookie phenom Auston Matthews makes his first career visit to Los Angeles as the Maple Leafs continue their West Coast swing Thursday night against the Kings. The Arizona native reached the 30-goal plateau in Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens, making him just the third Leafs rookie to do so.

Toronto has benefited greatly from Matthews' recent scoring barrage, having earned a point in 12 straight games (10-0-2) in which the No. 1 pick has lit the lamp. But he could find the sledding tough against a Los Angeles team allowing the fifth-fewest goals per game in the league (2.43).

              Tennessee Shootout?

Two of February's highest-scoring teams do battle in a Saturday night Central Division showdown as the Nashville Predators host the Chicago Blackhawks. Coming into the week, no team in the NHL has been more prolific this month than the 'Hawks, who have racked up 44 goals through 10 February games while going 9-1-0 over that stretch.

But they'll meet their match in the Predators, who have scored 43 goals in 12 games this month en route to a 7-4-1 record. The teams are 2-0-2 O/U through four meetings this season, with the Blackhawks having won three of the four games.

              Injury Updates

              * A debilitating mumps outbreak has decimated the Vancouver Canucks' dressing room - and it is having a predictably damaging impact on the team's flickering playoff chances. The Canucks come into the week having dropped back-to-back games and nine of their last 12, and have been outscored 36-24 in February.

              * The Winnipeg Jets are down three starting defensemen, and it has certainly showed. Joining Tyler Myers (lower body) and Tobias Enstrom (lower body) on the sidelines is Jacob Trouba, who will serve the second game of a two-game suspension this week against Minnesota. The Jets have struggled in February, allowing a whopping 3.50 goals per game.

              Player Notes

              * It has been a rough year for Jamie Benn and the rest of the Dallas Stars, but the team's scoring leader has caught fire in February, scoring seven goals and adding eight assists in 11 games. He ranks third in points for the month entering Monday, and has helped the Stars lead the league in scoring for the month at 3.73 goals per game.

              * Chicago Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews is coming off one of the most sensational weeks of his career. Toews had four goals and five assists in three Chicago victories last week, and leads the league with 18 points this month. Teammate Patrick Kane has also had a hot February with nine goals and seven assists in 10 games.

              * Nobody can blame Max Pacioretty for the Montreal Canadiens' offensive struggles this month. Pacioretty has been in on 11 of the Canadiens' 16 goals in February, scoring five times and adding six assists. Forward Alex Galchenyuk and defenseman Andrei Markov are the only other Montreal players with five points in February.

              Stanley Cup Futures

              * That red-hot February has surged the Blackhawks into contender range, at least from an odds standpoint. According to Sports Interaction, the Blackhawks are now +800 to hoist the Stanley Cup this June, second only to the Minnesota Wild among Western Conference teams. Chicago trails Minnesota by one point in the standings.

              * It will be interesting to see how the acquisition of netminder Ben Bishop will help the Kings in their quest for a third Stanley Cup championship in six seasons. Los Angeles, which acquired Bishop from the Tampa Bay Lightning over the weekend to provide relief for recently returned starter Jonathan Quick, comes into the week with +2,500 Stanley Cup odds.

              * Vancouver was a longshot even before its mumps outbreak - and now, only the hardiest bettors would dare put money on the Canucks to win it all. They're at an astronomical +15,000 to secure their first Stanley Cup championship this season - and even that might be generous, with 10 players on the injury report as of Monday.

              Over/Under Trends

              * Tight, low-scoring games have become the norm for the Ottawa Senators, who have played to the Under in eight of their last nine coming into the week. The Senators been one of the strongest Under plays in the league at 23-35-2 O/U for the season, including a remarkable 10-21-1 at home.

              * Referee Ghislain Hebert has been an Over magnet so far this season. Games he has worked have gone 34-24 O/U for a net Over profit of +1,016; Brad Watson is second among referees at +967, while Jean Hebert comes into the week ranked third at +888. Wes McCauley is ranked last at -1,512 in relation to the Over.

                • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

                  — Atlantic Sun tourney started Champ Week last night: both top seeds won easily. Only upset was a slight one, #5-seed Kennesaw State won at SC-Upstate.

                  — Virginia 53, North Carolina 43— Tar Heels are an ordinary 5-4 on ACC road.

                  — Baylor’s Jake Lindsey (#3) is the son of Utah Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey.

                  — Texas released PG Tevin Mack, who had been suspended; curious to see where he surfaces. Longhorns are 3-10 since Mack was suspended.

                  — Mississippi State gave football coach Dan Mullen a 4-year extension thru 2021. Guy makes $4.5M a year; I was stunned by that.

                  — 16 Miami Dolphins are in NYC this week, taking part in Miami owner Stephen Ross’ Business Combine that should help players manage and increase their wealth better.

                  **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                  13) Can be difficult to evaluate pitchers in spring training; take Sunday, when Daniel Gossett looked good pitching against the Angels. Gossett is a prospect, but……

Normally when you face the Angels, you’ll face Calhoun-Trout-Pujols-Maybin in the first two innings. Sunday, Halos’ #3 hitter was Cliff Pennington, not exactly their “A” lineup, so you have to take Gossett’s performance with a grain of salt.

                  12) I’m a big fan of the Showtime program Billions; turns out that two of the three co-writers on the show also worked together writing Rounders and Oceans 13, two excellent movies.

                  11) With closer Jeurys Familia due to be suspended (domestic violence) at the start of the season, Addison Reed will be the Mets closer on April 3 and for several weeks after.

                  10) Toronto Raptors lose G Kyle Lowry (wrist) for the rest of the regular season; they hope to have him back for the playoffs.

                  9) These stats are from Justin Ray of Golf Channel: Average age of PGA Tour winners this season is 28.7 years old.

From 2000-13, average age of winners on Tour was 33.4 years old. In 2014-15, it was 30.4.

                  8) Reese Maguire is a minor league catcher in the Blue Jays’ system; think catching is in his genes? His dad caught, his grandfather was a catcher for Duke in the College World Series.

                  In 1952.

                  7) Random food fact: I’ve never had Italian ice or a snow cone. Or coffee.

                  6) NFL Combine is this week, so we’ll see lot of 40-yard dashes and agility drills and no one will remind us that Tom Brady had an awful Combine workout and is one of the best QB’s of all time.

Game film means more than workouts, though I’m guessing the interviews teams do with prospects are REALLY helpful. Like the time Geno Smith fiddled with his cellphone during his interviews. Never should’ve been drafted high after that.

                  5) San Diego Padres have used 84 players the last two years. Thats a lot.

Seattle Mariners made 37 roster moves between the end of last season and the start of spring training; GM Jerry DiPoto has totally cleaned house, building a new team around his nucleus of Robinson Cano/Felix Hernandez/Hector Cruz

                  4) Saturday in Las Vegas, an astute gambler played $7 on a 10-team college hoop parlay and it hit, making him $5,040 (720-1 odds). He played four totals and six sides.

                  3) Texas Rangers are 28-10 against the Astros the last two years, with 13 one-run wins. If the Astros can just go 10-9 against Texas this year, thats a 5-game swing in the AL West race.

                  2) Only three big leaguers played 162 games last year: Alcides Escobar, Jonathan Schoop and George Springer.

1— Steelers signed WR Antonio Brown to a $17M a year deal, making him the highest-paid WR in the NFL. Maybe next year he can actually listen to his coach’s post-game speeches instead of playing them on Facebook Live.

Brown’s father is Eddie Brown, known here in Albany as Touchdown Eddie Brown, a great player in the Arena League. Eddie Brown once scored nine TD’s in a Firebirds game; he was great fun to watch. Hard to believe it has been 18 years since they won the Arena Bowl.

                          • Wild sign F Carter to two-way deal
                            February 26, 2017

The Minnesota Wild signed free agent forward Ryan Carter to a one-year, two-way contract for the remainder of the season, the team announced Sunday.

The deal is worth a prorated $575,000 at the NHL level and a prorated $250,000 when in the American Hockey League, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Carter, 33, skated in three games with the Iowa Wild of the AHL after signing a professional tryout agreement on Feb. 18. He tallied seven goals, five assists and 48 penalty minutes in 60 regular-season games with Minnesota last season and skated in two Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound native of White Bear Lake, Minn., owns 93 points (41 goals, 52 assists) and 444 penalty minutes in 473 career games during nine NHL seasons with Anaheim, Carolina, Florida, New Jersey and Minnesota. Carter has seven goals, five assists and 48 penalty minutes in 46 playoff games and won a Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007.

The Wild also recalled forward Zac Dalpe from their AHL affiliate. Dalpe, 27, has one goal and two assists in nine games with Minnesota this season and two goals and 40 shots in 12 games with Iowa.

--The Chicago Blackhawks recalled goaltender Lars Johansson from Rockford of the AHL.

Johansson, who has yet to appear in an NHL game, posted an 11-11-4 mark with two shutouts, a 2.66 goals-against average and .907 save percentage in 30 contests with the IceHogs this season. The 29-year-old Swede is rejoining the Blackhawks for the first time since serving as a backup during a nine-game, 16-day stretch in December.

--The Buffalo Sabres recalled goaltender Linus Ullmark from the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

Ullmark, 23, joins the Sabres for his fifth recall of the season, but he has yet to appear in a game with the team in 2016-17.

The Lugnvik, Sweden, native has a 20-20-2 record with a 2.90 goals-against average and .910 save percentage in 42 games for Rochester this season.

--The Florida Panthers recalled forward Denis Malgin from the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL.

Malgin, 20, has four goals and four assists in 39 games with Florida this season. He has 12 points (three goals, nine assists) in 15 games for Springfield.

--The Washington Capitals reassigned forward Riley Barber and defenseman Aaron Ness to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

Barber, 23, made his NHL debut on Feb. 24 against Edmonton and has two shots on goal in two games with the Capitals this season. He has 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in 18 games with the Bears in 2016-17.

Ness, 26, has been in two games with Washington this season and has two assists in 10 career games with the Capitals. The Roseau, Minn., native has 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 41 games with Hershey this season.

                            • Kings get G Bishop from Lightning
                              February 26, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings addressed their goaltending situation on Sunday by acquiring Ben Bishop from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bishop, a Vezina finalist last season and a pending unrestricted free agent, will back up Jonathan Quick, who returned Saturday from a 59-game absence to lead the Kings to win over Anaheim thanks to a 32-save performance.

Quick was also a Vezina finalist last season.

Los Angeles also received a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NHL draft for goaltender Peter Budaj and defense prospect Erik Cernak. To complete the deal, the Lightning picked up both a seventh-round and a conditional pick in the 2017 draft.

Tampa Bay will retain 20 percent of the prorated remainder of Bishop's $5.95 million salary, according to the Kings' official team site.

Bishop recorded a 16-12-3 mark with one shutout, a 2.55 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage this season. The 30-year-old pending unrestricted free agent has posted a 146-77-23 career mark with 19 shutouts, a 2.32 GAA and .919 save percentage in 263 contests with the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators and Lightning.

"Our plan was that at some point we were going to turn over the starting goaltending duties to (22-year-old Andrei Vasilevskiy)," Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman told the Tampa Times on Sunday night. "Ultimately the timing of the trade really is based on that we're able to acquire a goaltender (in Budaj) that can go in play games for us and help us win games this year. And Andrei will play a bigger load of games than he has.

Budaj fared well this season in place of injured Jonathan Quick, highlighted by a league high-tying seven shutouts. The 34-year-old owns a 27-20-3 mark with a 2.12 GAA and .917 save percentage this season and a 152-127-39 career record with 18 shutouts with the Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche and Kings.

Cernak, a second-round pick by L.A. in 2015, has three goals, 14 assists and a plus-27 rating to go along with 47 penalty minutes in 40 games with Erie of the Ontario Hockey League. The 19-year-old has scored seven goals and set up 25 others in 82 career contests with the Otters. At 6-foot-3, 221 pounds, the right-shot defenseman is a solid add to the Lightning prospect pool.

"He's big, strong, a good skater, a good strong defender," Yzerman told the Times. "With our depth chart and prospect pool, he fits in. We're very optimistic that with time he can develop into an NHL player."

                              • Wild give up picks to get Hanzal, White
                                February 26, 2017

The Western Conference-leading Minnesota Wild got stronger down the middle, but it came at a steep cost.

The Wild acquired a pair of centers in 6-foot-6, 226-pounder Martin Hanzal and 6-foot, 200-pound Ryan White from the Arizona Coyotes for a haul of draft picks on Sunday night.

The 30-year-old Hanzal is one of the top two-way centers in the NHL while White, 28, adds depth to the bottom-six of the Wild.

"On behalf of the entire organization, we would like to thank Martin for all of his contributions to the Coyotes on and off the ice over the past 10 seasons," said Coyotes general manager John Chayka in a release Sunday night. "We wish him the best of the luck in the future."

The Wild, who also received Arizona's fourth-round pick in this year's draft, sent a first rounder this year, a second rounder next year, a conditional pick in 2019, and minor leaguer Grayson Downing to the Coyotes.

"I can assure you this was the top price in the market for Martin Hanzal," Chayka said via Dave Vest of coyotes.com.

Arizona will also retain 50 percent of the prorated remainder of Hanzal's $3.1 million salary for the season.

"This is a deal that I've worked on tirelessly ... Minnesota clearly stepped up," Chaka said.

As far as the conditional pick, according to reports, if the Wild win one playoff round this season, the conditional pick becomes a third rounder; if they win two rounds, it becomes a second rounder.

"It's been a good 10 years, but I'm really looking forward to being in the playoffs and stepping on the ice to help Minnesota," Hanzal told The Sports Xchange's Craig Morgan in a phone interview.

Hanzal, a free agent after the season, said he has been expecting a trade for "the last two weeks" because the sides had not engaged in contract talks since the summer.

Hanzal has 16 goals and 10 assist this season after scoring 13 goals and a career-high 41 points in 64 games with the club last season. He spent his entire NHL career with the Coyotes franchise since being drafted 17th overall in 2005. He noted it is hard to say goodbye to longtime teammates Shane Doan and Czech countryman Radim Vrbata.

"He was like a second father to me," Hanzal said of Doan. "He's been helping me since Day 1."

White, who will also be a free agent after this season, has seven goals and six assists and 70 penalty minutes in 46 games this season.

The 24-year-old Downing has seven goals and 14 assists in 46 games with AHL Iowa Wild. He will report to the Coyotes AHL squad.

"It's a miserable feeling to be a seller at the deadline and it's something that I never want to do again," Chayka added.
