    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Westgate Sportsbook listed spreads for some late season NFL games:

-- Baltimore @ Pittsburgh (-7.5)-- Christmas night in Steel City.

-- Denver @ Kansas City (-3)-- Nightcap of Christmas twinbill,

-- Detroit @ Dallas (-6)-- Monday Night Football night after Christmas.

-- Green Bay (-3) @ Detroit-- Pack won here on a Hail Mary LY.

-- Bears @ Vikings (-5)-- Fans will be glad for the domed stadium here.

    -- Raiders @ Broncos (-4)-- Mark Sanchez started 10 games (4-6) last 3 years.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

    13) Why is someone who never played baseball an analyst on Sunday Night Baseball? It is a fair question, but in this politically correct era, no one has the onions to address it.

    12) In ten quarters since Steph Curry hurt his knee, the Warriors are +72.

    11) Dodgers 1, Padres 0-- Clayton Kershaw pitched a complete game, knocked in the only run; last pitcher to win a 1-0 complete game and knick in the only run was Mat Latos, six years ago.

    10) Six sons of former NFL players were drafted by NFL teams this week.

    9) Minor league baseball is a good investment; Saturday night, they drew 7,079 fans for a Hartford-Richmond Eastern League game in Virginia.

    8) DeSean Murray, who led Big South in scoring this past year, bolted on his friends/teammates and will now play at Auburn. Poaching mid-major stars is how some high-major teams replenish their rosters now.

    7) Graduate transfer John Gillon bolts from Colorado State to Syracuse; he will be only the third scholarship guard on Syracuse's roster heading into next season- not a deep team at all.

    6) Northern Colorado named Boise assistant Jeff Linder as its new basketball coach, making Delaware the only team that hasn't got a coach-- Blue Hens aren't going to name a coach until they hire a new AD, and they haven't even done that yet. Good luck to the poor soul who gets that job; he's a year behind already and he hasn't got the job yet.

    5) Greedy bastard update: Apparently the new rule is that gas prices go up 10 cents a gallon on the first of each month, second month in row it happened here. Gas is $2.49 a gallon at Fuller/Central in beautiful downtown Colonie.

    4) Flipped on the NASCAR race Sunday and about 90 seconds later, the #20 car flips, goes on its head while going really fast. Scary stuff, but I'm told as long as the car is moving, the driver is fairly safe- it is when car comes to a quick, sudden stop that the driver could be in jeopardy.

    3) Royals 4, Mariners 1-- World champs snap a 7-game road losing skid.

    2) Why are the Toronto Raptors' uniforms so plain? They used to have great uniforms with the cartoon raptor on it. These uniforms are plain ugly.

    1) Last year, Milwaukee Brewers hired a 30-year old to run their franchise; because he went to an Ivy League school and worked for an Astros team that had suddenly become a contender. Last winter, the new GM traded 28-year old Khris Davis, who hit 49 homers the last two years, for two minor leaguers, one of whom is Jacob Nottingham, a catching prospect who the new GM made sound like the next Johnny Bench.

Problem is, Nottingham is hitting .159 in the AA Southern League; Davis is hitting 5th for a 13-13 Oakland team that is better than expected. Second guy the Brewers got is still pitching in A ball. But hey, the GM went to Harvard; he must be smarter than the rest of us, right?

Stanley Cup Playoffs NHL betting preview: Capitals at Penguins
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Penguins earned a thrilling victory in Game 2 and return home looking to keep momentum on their side.

The Pittsburgh Penguins return home after a successful split of the first two games in Washington. The Capitals will be attempting to snatch back home-ice advantage in this pivotal Game 3.

        Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (A: +120, H: -145, O/U: 5)

        Series tied 1-1

The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to overcome the loss of one of their top-tier defensemen to even their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Washington Capitals. With coach Mike Sullivan admitting that he's "probably not optimistic" about the availability of Olli Maatta (upper body), Pittsburgh faces an uphill task in Monday's Game 3 as the series shifts to the Steel City.

Washington also will be short-handed on the blue line as former Penguin Brooks Orpik, who lowered the boom on Maatta less than five minutes into Saturday's contest, received a three-game suspension from the NHL for the hit. Pittsburgh dominated play for the initial two periods before ex-Capital Eric Fehr redirected the puck past Braden Holtby with 4:28 remaining in the third of an eventual 2-1 win. "Call (it) what it was," Washington forward Justin Williams told reporters. "The first two periods, the ice was tilted a little bit, no doubt. ... We didn't answer until the third. It turned out to be too late." Superstars Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby have also been late to the party in the series, as the former has been held to just one assist while the latter has been held off the scoresheet in both contests.

        TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVAS

        PROBABLE GOALIES:

        Capitals - Braden Holtby (W/L 5-3, GAA: 1.24, SAVE %: 0.926)

        Penguins - Matt Murray (W/L 4-1, GAA: 1.74, SAVE %: 0.932)

        INJURY REPORT:

Capitals - D B. Orpik (Out Monday, suspension).

Penguins - G M Fleury (Questionable Monday, concussion), RW B. Bennett (Questionable Monday, shoulder), D O. Maatta (Out Monday, head).

        ABOUT THE CAPITALS (61-21-8, 40-50 ATS, 35-38 O/U):
Holtby isn't putting his feet up in this series, as the Vezina Trophy finalist has faced 80 shots in the first two contests versus Pittsburgh after seeing just 36 come his way in the final two games against Philadelphia. "We know we can play better. We have had periods but not 60-minute games. We can't give a team like that as much time and space," said Holtby, who has allowed five goals to the Penguins after yielding that same total in six games versus the Flyers. With Orpik set to miss Games 3-5, either Mike Weber or Dmitry Orlov will draw back into the lineup.

        ABOUT THE PENGUINS (53-27-9, 43-46 ATS, 40-34 O/U):
While Sullivan admitted he has questions about Maatta's availability for Game 3, he stopped short of revealing any answers should the defenseman be forced to sit out. Derrick Pouliot is one candidate despite having yet to play in the 2016 playoffs while fellow blue-liner Justin Schultz is another after competing in just under six minutes of Game 1 of the first-round series. "We've been working hard, the guys who haven't been playing," Schultz said. "Obviously, it's different being in a game situation, but you have to be ready. It's playoff time and if I have to go (Monday), I'll be ready."

        TRENDS:

        * Capitals are 13-3 in their last 16 Monday games.
        * Penguins are 21-5 in their last 26 games playing on 1 days rest.
        * Under is 10-2-4 in Capitals last 16 Conference Semifinals games.
        * Over is 7-1-3 in Penguins last 11 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
        * Under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings in Pittsburgh.
