  • Preview: Blues (49-24) at Blackhawks (47-26)
    Date: April 23, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Providing bulletin board material for the defending Stanley Cup champions who just staved off elimination doesn't seem wise. Whether it's confidence or arrogance, though, Alex Pietrangelo doesn't mind having to head back to the United Center for Game 6 on Saturday night.

"It's going to be fun to win it in Chicago," the St. Louis defenseman boasted.

It's true that the Blues won Games 3 and 4 in the Windy City to put the Blackhawks in a 3-1 hole, having set up a chance to close out this first-round series Thursday at home and advance to the Western Conference semifinals for the first time since 2012. But that's also the last time Chicago was sent home in the opening round.

The following year, the Blackhawks came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat Detroit in their first series before winning their second of three Cups in the last six seasons. The year after that, they lost Games 1 and 2 to St. Louis in the first round before rallying to win four straight, then forced Game 7 against Los Angeles in the conference finals after falling behind 3-1 and lost in overtime.

All of that makes it seem Pietrangelo's comment is ill-timed after Patrick Kane kept Chicago alive with a put-back goal 3:07 into the second overtime of Game 5 for a 4-3 victory. The Art Ross Trophy winner's fifth career postseason overtime goal tied him for third on the all-time list and helped the Blackhawks recover from losing a two-goal lead in the third period.

It also marked Kane's first goal of the series. Captain Jonathan Toews has yet to score, though both of them assisted on Artemi Panarin's goal with 0.4 seconds left in the second that gave Chicago a 3-1 advantage. Marian Hossa and Artem Anisimov scored earlier in the period.

'Tough to give up another lead like that, but we didn't crack,' said Corey Crawford, who made 12 of his 43 saves in the OT periods. 'We stuck with our game, and we're excited to go back home now.'

One might wonder why. St. Louis scored the deciding goal there in Game 3 after Kane's four-minute high sticking penalty in the third, then held on to win Game 4 when Andrew Shaw's late interference penalty thwarted any hopes for a Blackhawks comeback.

Chicago won without Shaw in Game 5 after he was suspended for directing a homophobic slur at someone on the ice while entering the penalty box. He'll be back for this contest, which everyone is expecting to be another tight one.

Each game in the series has been decided by one goal, with both clubs taking one in overtime. It's part of the reason the Blues are still feeling good despite missing a chance to close out the series at home.

'Let's get playing,' coach Ken Hitchcock said. 'We've got to find another way to make them crack.'

St. Louis has outscored Chicago 8-4 in the third period and overtime and fought back in Game 4 with goals from Robby Fabbri and David Backes to send it to OT. It's the type of resolve the Blues might need again to keep Chicago from forcing a Game 7 on Monday in St. Louis.

'We've played in a lot of overtimes with this team and had some long stretches here in playoff runs, so when you get those opportunities sometimes you come up big,' Kane said. 'Sometimes you get lucky, too.'

And that's exactly how Pietrangelo feels the Blackhawks won Thursday after claiming the Blues "outplayed" the Blackhawks. He assisted on all three St. Louis goals, tying him with Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko for the team lead with five playoff points.

'I thought we played one of our better games,' Pietrangelo said. 'It's going to be a tough place to win. We won the last two there, though.'

-- Who gets drafted first? Treadwell -$135, Doctson -$105

-- Total Ohio State players drafted in whole draft: Over 13.5 (-$115), under -$125

          **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

          13) Hornets 96, Heat 80-- First playoff win for Charlotte in 14 years; they had lost their last 12 playoff games in a row.

          12) Charlotte coach Steve Clifford makes around $4M a year now working for Michael Jordan's team, but in 1994-95, he was an assistant coach at Siena College here just outside of Albany, where he made far less than $4M a year.

          11) Why did the Knicks let Jeremy Lin go? Never made sense to me; the team was winning when he ran the point, they were fun to watch-- everyone (except Carmelo Anthony) seemed happy. He would still be the best point guard on their roster.

          10) Twins' rookie OF Max Kepler was born in Germany; both of his parents are professional dancers over there.

          9) Atlanta Braves are 4-13, haven't homered in their last 12 games- could be a very long year on Peachtree Street, but they move into their new stadium next year and have lot of good young prospects down on the farm, not far from the big leagues.

          8) There have been 15 pinch-hit homers in the major leagues this month; Cardinals have seven of them.

          7) In Japan, the baseball season is 143 games long and Monday is a mandatory day off; during batting practice, they use two cages at once, placed next to each other.

          6) I'd watch a Japanese League Game of the Week; could have American graphics and maybe a couple of guys on MLB Network studios analyzing the game wthout going all the way over there. Am curious to see waht their games are like.

          5) When minor league teams play doubleheaders, both games are seven innings.

          4) A 29-year old African man is facing deportation from Canada after he posed as a 16-year old basketball star and was attracting interest from American colleges.

          3) New York Mets scored in top of first inning in six of the eight games on their current road trip- they have 38 games against Philly/Atlanta and 19 more with the dysfunctional Marlins- it must be nice.

          2) Dodgers 4, Rockies 1-- Japanese import Kenta Maeda has allowed one run in 25.1 IP in his first four American starts.

          1) Has to be hard for ESPN's Jeff Van Gundy to be calling the one-sided Detroit-Cleveland series, seeing as the losing coach is going to be his brother Stan. He does as well as he can hiding the fact that he is rooting for the Pistons.

Stars split last four road games; they allowed total of three goals in three series wins, 5-5 in losses. Dallas is 3-16 on power play in series, Minnesota is 2-12. Wild won Game 5 despite not having a power play the whole game.

Playoffs tally: Home: 20-21, Over: 15-13-13

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Sunday's NHL betting preview
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Panthers need a win Sunday or they're heading to the golf course for the summer.

It's win or go home for three teams in Sunday's Stanley Cup Playoffs, but if they can stay alive get ready for the best two words in sports "Game 7." We break down all the action in our betting preview.

              Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers (A: -171, H: +156, O/U: 5)

              Capitals lead series 3-2

With little margin for error, Michal Neuvirth has been nearly perfect in helping his current team claw back in its first-round series against his former one. Neuvirth looks to help the upstart Philadelphia Flyers even their set with the Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington Capitals on Sunday afternoon when the Metropolitan Division rivals play Game 6 in the City of Brotherly Love.

Neuvirth replaced an ineffective Steve Mason and made 31 saves in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday before turning aside all 44 shots he faced two nights later for his second career postseason shutout in a 2-0 win. "I like to face a lot of shots. It keeps me in the game," the 28-year-old Neuvirth said after his team was outshot by a 4-to-1 margin (44-11). Braden Holtby made 10 saves, but saw fourth-liner Ryan White receive credit for the Flyers' first goal after the puck caromed off the skate of Washington defenseman Taylor Chorney before Chris VandeVelde sealed the win with an empty-net tally. "We put a lot of pucks on net and didn't get any to trickle through," Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner said. "We have to hope the goalie over there cools off and some of those (shots) find a way in."

TV: Noon ET, NBC, CBC, TVAS

              PROBABLE GOALIES:
              Capitals - B. Holtby (0.924%), Flyers - M. Neuvirth (0.929%).

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (59-20-8, 34-36 O/U): Washington's disappointing postseason performances are well documented, so much so that Barry Trotz feels he's on the defensive even though he's only been the club's coach for one month shy of two years. "Everybody talks about all the past, the past, the past," Trotz said. "The only pressure that we'll have is on ourselves. We've got to go into Philadelphia and we've got to play really well and get a win there. If we don't accomplish that, then it will go to Game 7 (on Wednesday)." The Capitals have won just one of their past nine opportunities to close out a playoff series - with a 1-6 mark under Trotz.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (43-30-14, 33-33 O/U): Citing his team's "bend but don't break" mindset, rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere was quick to look for positives after seeing the ice tilted for much of Friday's contest. "Game 6 is back in our place, and we have a lot of confidence going forward with our group," Gostisbehere told Philly.com. "It doesn't go by shots. It goes by goals." Philadelphia has mustered just six of those and Gostisbehere's goal in Game 4 is the team's lone score on the power play in 21 chances.

              TRENDS:

              * Home team is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
              * Capitals are 3-9 in the last 12 meetings in Philadelphia.
              * Under is 4-1-2 in the last seven meetings.
              * Over is 22-8 in the last 30 meetings in Philadelphia.

              Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild (A: -125, H: +113, O/U: 5)

              Stars lead series 3-2

The Minnesota Wild seemingly have been on their heels throughout the first round of the playoffs, but they have a chance to knot up their postseason series when they host the Dallas Stars for Sunday afternoon's Game 6. Minnesota has clawed back from a 2-0 series deficit and staved off elimination with a 5-4 overtime win at Dallas on Friday night.

The Stars were just over three minutes from winning their first postseason series since 2008 when the Wild tied it on a goal by captain Mikko Koivu, who also delivered the game-winning tally in overtime to send the series back to Minnesota. "We will work to use the crowd and work hard to give them a good game in Game 6," Wild netminder Devan Dubnyk said. "We love playing in our barn and have a great feeling about it. That was the next step for us." Dallas coach Lindy Ruff did not have much to complain about, saying: "I think our team played our best game." The Stars have won four of five meetings in Minnesota this season - all by one goal and three in overtime.

TV: 3 p.m. ET, NBC, Sportsnet, TVAS

              PROBABLE GOALIES: Stars - A. Niemi (0.904%), Wild D. Dubnyk (0.916%)

ABOUT THE STARS (53-24-10, 47-38 O/U): Ruff has juggled his goaltenders - who each registered 25 victories - throughout the season and the same has held true in the playoffs after Kari Lehtonen started the first three games of the series before Antti Niemi got the nod in Games 4 and 5. Ruff said he did not think the one day off between Games 4 and 5 was a factor in Niemi's performance in Game 5 and expressed confidence in both of his netminders. "We'll just evaluate and move on," Ruff said. "We'll just keep doing what we've done all year. We're up 3-2, and they've both won us games in the playoffs."

ABOUT THE WILD (40-36-11, 31-37 O/U): Koivu entered the series mired in a deep postseason rut, scoring twice in his previous 28 games, but he has already surpassed that total against the Stars with what proved to be the game-winner in Game 3 before his dramatic pair of tallies on Friday night. "Of course, it's always nice to score," Koivu said. "It's more important in the bigger picture how you play individually and as a team. We're doing a lot of good things. We've been playing better as the series goes on here, and that's a good sign." Forward Jordan Schroeder made his series debut in Game 5 and scored.

              TRENDS:

              * Wild are 2-8 in their last 10 games overall.
              * Stars are 4-1 in the last five meetings in Minnesota.
              * Over is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings in Minnesota.
              * Under is 3-0-1 in Wild last four after scoring five goals or more in their previous game.

              Florida Panthers at New York Islanders (A: -105, H: -105, O/U 5)

              Islanders lead series 3-2

The New York Islanders can advance in the playoffs for the first time in 23 years on Sunday when they host Game 6 of their first-round series with the Florida Panthers. The Islanders survived several anxious moments on Friday as Thomas Greiss (47 saves) denied Aleksander Barkov on a penalty shot in the first overtime before rookie Alan Quine's one-timer beat Roberto Luongo exactly 16 minutes into the second extra session to secure the 2-1 win.

The back-and-forth series shifts to the Barclays Center, where New York posted an impressive 25-11-5 mark during the regular season before splitting Games 3 and 4 with Atlantic Division-champion Florida. The Islanders have won all six of their opportunities in franchise history when hosting a Game 6 with a chance to clinch a series. Although his team trails in the set, Panthers coach Gerard Gallant hasn't had much issue with his team's compete level in the series. "I can't tell them to play much better," Gallant told reporters. "They're playing their game, they're working hard and they're competing. It's not like we're not playing well."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVAS, SUN (Florida), MSG-Plus (New York)

              PROBABLE GOALIES: Panthers - R. Luongo (0.922%), Islanders - T. Greiss (0.927%)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (49-27-11, 35-34 O/U): Nick Bjugstad is listed as day-to-day after losing an edge and falling face-first into the boards early in the second overtime on Friday. "He got looked at (on Friday night), he got looked at (Saturday) morning like all the other players that are banged up, and then I'll know from there," Gallant told reporters of Bjugstad, whose four points (two goals, two assists) are second only to Reilly Smith (four goals, four assists). "But I haven't been told he's not (playing) and I haven't been told he is." Veteran Shawn Thornton and fellow forwards Quinton Howden and Gregg McKegg are candidates to play on Sunday should Bjugstad sit out.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (48-29-10, 36-43 O/U): Signed in the summer to be Jaroslav Halak's backup, Greiss has loomed large as New York is in position to clinch its first postseason victory since it defeated Washington and Pittsburgh to advance to the 1993 Wales Conference final. The 30-year-old German has stopped 74-of-77 shots in the last two contests and yielded just 12 goals in the series. "I'm seeing pucks just fine," said Greiss, who made a sparkling left pad save on Barkov's penalty shot. "Couple other games, the puck bounces in."

              TRENDS:

              * Panthers are 5-2 in their last seven road games.
              * Islanders are 4-1 in their last five games playing on one days rest.
              * Over is 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings in New York.
              * Over is 11-2-5 in Panthers last 18 games playing on one days rest.

-- Lakers fired coach Byron Scott; he is 102-292 in his last five years as a coach, but he did have success with the Nets/New Orleans. You need good players to win.

                    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

                    13) Tremendous day of games today, lot of good stuff. Washington beat the Twins in 16 innings, in a game with 516 pitches thrown, 27 players used, 14 pitchers. Game took 5:56, with 27 hits and 32 strikeouts. Great fun.

                    12) Cubs are already 6-1 against Cincinnati this year; they've outscored the Reds 60-20 in those seven games. Reds are not a good baseball team.

                    11) Yesterday's quiz answer was Hideo Nomo as author of the only no-hitter at Coors Field; Nomo pitched in Denver 10 times. In his other nine starts, aside from the no-hitter, Nomo was 2-1, 9.67, allowing 11 HRs in 44.2 IP.

                    10) Pitcher Shelby Miller wound up playing left field for Arizona in the 13th inning yesterday, as SS Nick Ahmed got thrown out for arguing balls/strikes and the Snakes were out of position players. Pitchers Zack Greinke and Jon Niese both had pinch-hits in the game.

                    9) Braves' catcher AJ Pierzynski has 1,999 hits; he will become the 10th catcher ever to get 2,000 hits. Pretty impressive; was surprised when I heard it.

                    8) Mat Latos is early leader for Comeback Player of the Year; he is 4-0, 0.74 in four starts for the White Sox. In 2014-15, he was a combined 9-15, 4.16 in 37 starts for four different teams.

                    7) Saturday night in Las Vegas, four guys bet a cab driver $100 he wouldn't drive thru the In 'n Out Burger drive-thru lane in reverse; they lost.

                    6) Hall of Fame pitcher Don Drysdale's widow, Anne Meyers, who was a great hoop player at UCLA, sold lot of her late husband's memorabilia; his 1963 and 1965 World Series rungs netted just under $200,000 combined.

                    5) Tanner Roark was awesome Saturday, whiffing 15 Twins in a 2-0 Washington win; he threw 121 pitches, most by any major leaguer this season.

There was a Twitter debate this weekend, where guys were talking about high school coaches having kids throw 160+ pitches in a game. No bueno.

                    4) Of the 183 NHL teams who trailed playoff series 3-0, only nine forced a Game 7; those nine teams went 4-5 in the Game 7.

                    3) Do big league teams shift too much? Some ex-players in TV booths this weekend were discussing this- their consensus seemed to be that a star pitcher like Kershaw should have veto rights over any shifts, but you have to earn the right to have veto rights over the manager. It is an interesting debate.

                    2) Los Angeles Clippers have never led a playoff series, 3-0. Ever.

                    1) Phil Simms came out and said Jared Goff is the 3rd-best QB in this week's draft; he may be right or may be wrong, but I don't give rat's ass what Simms says about QBs, despite his having been a very good player himself.

Long time ago, Simms shredded Ben Roethlisberger on Mike Francesa's Sunday radio show when Ben was a senior at Miami; he denies it now, but I remember listening to it and then laughing when Big Ben became such a good player.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Monday's NHL betting preview
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Blackhawks' offense came alive out of desperation Saturday night with five unanswered goals to push their series with the Blues to a seventh game.

It's Game 7 time! The Blues will host the Blackhawks in the final game of their, predictably, awesome first round series. In Monday's only other game the Predators will try to push their series to Game 7 with their backs against the wall against the Ducks.

                      Anaheim Ducks at Nashville Predators (A: -110, H: -110, O/U: 5)

                      Ducks lead series 3-2

The Nashville Predators flew home last week in control of their first-round playoff series and looking to push the Anaheim Ducks to the brink of elimination. Three straight losses later, the Predators returned home with a far different agenda - needing a victory Monday night to keep their season going as they prepare to host the Ducks in Game 6.

Since dropping a pair of one-goal decisions at home, Anaheim has outscored Nashville 12-3 to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. "Just like our season," Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf said. "We started off terrible and then got good. It's a race to four and we still have to win another game. But I don't think there's a single guy in this room that didn't think we'd be in this position." The No. 7 seed Predators also didn't expect to be in this position after taking their first two-game series lead in franchise history - on the road no less - before dropping three in a row to the Pacific Division champions. "It's do or die," Nashville center Ryan Johansen said. "It's about finding a way to get it in the net and keeping them from scoring. We have to throw them everything we've got."

                      PROBABLE GOALIES: Ducks - F. Andersen (0.922%), Predators - P. Rinne (0.906%).

ABOUT THE DUCKS (49-27-11, 42-45 ATS, 33-35 O/U): Every move seems to be working for Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau, including the surprise top-line promotion of Ryan Garbutt, who put his team ahead to stay in Game 5 with a second-period goal that accounted for his first point of the series. "He's as good a forechecker as we have, he's responsible defensively, and if people take liberties, he's not afraid to mix it up," Boudreau said of the decision to pair Garbutt with Getzlaf and David Perron. "I just thought it was a good fit." Frederik Andersen has been spectacular since taking over for John Gibson in net, turning aside 84-of-87 shots for a .966 save percentage.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (43-30-14, 36-51 ATS, 34-34 O/U): Forward Craig Smith, who finished third on the team with 21 goals, has essentially missed three contests after suffering a lower-body injury in the opening minutes of Game 3, but he was back at practice Sunday and remains listed as day-to-day. Nashville must find a way to solve Anaheim's penalty-killing unit, which ranked No. 1 during the regular season and has snuffed out 14 straight power-play chances over the past three games and 21-of-22 in the series. The Predators led the league with 55 goals from their defensemen but have managed only a pair of assists from captain Shea Weber in the past three games.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Ducks are 9-2 in their last 11 Conference Quarterfinals games.
                      * Predators are 0-4 in their last 4 games following a loss of 3 or more goals.
                      * Under is 3-0-1 in Ducks last 4 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
                      * Over is 4-1-3 in the last 8 meetings in Nashville.

                      Chicago Blackhawks at St. Louis Blues (A: -105, H: -115, O/U: 5)

                      Series tied 3-3

The Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues are no strangers to many elements of the current script, with the former ultimately overcoming a two-game deficit in 2014 to defeat the latter in a hard-hitting first-round playoff series. The reigning Stanley Cup-champion Blackhawks look to repeat the feat on Monday when the bitter Central Division rivals play a winner-take-all Game 7 at Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo did his best to put a positive spin on the position of the Blues, who are perilously close to being bounced in the first round of the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season - despite having home-ice advantage in each series. "We worked 82 games this year to get that home ice," Pietrangelo said after seeing Chicago score five unanswered goals en route to a 6-3 victory in Game 6 on Saturday. "If there's a time to use it, it's right now." The Blackhawks overcame a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate a rival in 2013, having done so versus Detroit in a second-round matchup.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVAS, CSN-Chicago

                      PROBABLE GOALIES: Blackhawks - C. Crawford (0.923%), Blues - B. Elliott (0.930%)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (50-28-10, 39-49 ATS, 33-33 O/U): Although Brent Seabrook scored the overtime goal to oust the Red Wings three years ago, the defenseman isn't taking his team's success for granted heading into Monday's pivotal contest. "I don't think you ever learn how to play in a Game 7," Seabrook told the Chicago Sun-Times. "When you play in more of them, you get — comfortable's not the right word — but you get not as nervous, I guess." Seabrook has recorded at least a point in all four of his previous Game 7s, including a goal to help Chicago oust Anaheim in the 2015 Western Conference final.

ABOUT THE BLUES (52-26-10, 39-49 ATS, 35-41 O/U): Vladimir Tarasenko scored his series-leading fourth goal and 14th in 19 career playoff games on Saturday to give St. Louis a 3-1 lead before the roof caved in. The 24-year-old Russian reportedly was upset after seeing limited time during a power play despite scoring 12 of his career-best 40 goals with the man advantage, but coach Ken Hitchcock told reporters that St. Louis had the puck in the offensive zone and couldn't get Tarasenko on the ice. Veteran Troy Brouwer will play in his seventh consecutive Game 7 on Monday, having competed in one with Chicago in 2011, two with Washington the following year, one in 2013 and two more with the Capitals in 2015.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Blackhawks are 8-2 in their last 10 when their opponent allows 5 goals or more in their previous game.
                      * Over is 9-2-6 in Blackhawks last 17 games following a win.
                      * Over is 11-2-3 in Blues last 16 games playing on 1 days rest.
                      * Road team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

                        St Louis-Chicago (3-3)
Chicago won last two games to force Game 7, rallying from down 3-1 in Game 6; Blues won five of last eight games with Chicago, with four wins by one goal, three in OT/SO; but you have to wonder if the Blues believe they can win. Chicago lost five of their last eight games overall, with three losses in OT. Over is 6-2-3 in last 11 Chicago games. Blues won ten of their last 15 games- they're 5-16 on power play in series, but had only one last game; Chicago is 5-18 on power play in series, 2-3 in last game. Five of six games in series have been decided by one goal.

                        Nashville-Anaheim (A 3-2)
Anaheim won last three games after falling behind 2-0 in series; they won last two games 4-1/5-2, killing all nine Nashville power plays. Over is 10-1-4 in last 15 series games; Under is 5-2-3 in last nine Anaheim games overall, 4-2-3 in last nine Nashville games. In 17 years of existence, Nashville has only won two playoff series, first round series in 2011, 2012; they've been over .500 in 11 of last 12 years, so you know there is doubt in their minds now. Ducks are 3-2 in last five visits here. Anaheim is 2-19 on power play in series, Predators 1-22.

                          • Preview: Ducks (46-25) at Predators (41-27)
                            Date: April 25, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The Anaheim Ducks' first-round playoff series is following the same pattern as their regular season.

Surging toward the second round after dropping the first two games, Anaheim looks to complete the comeback in Game 6 as it visits the Nashville Predators on Monday night.

Much like their stumbling first six weeks of the season which preceded a scorching stretch that lifted them into the playoffs, the Ducks looked all but done in this series with a pair of 3-2 home losses to open it. They promptly headed to Nashville and won both games by a combined 7-1, then earned a 5-2 victory at Honda Center on Saturday.

"Those first two games we lost at home were rock bottom for us," said forward Ryan Garbutt, who scored the go-ahead goal in the second period. "We definitely want to finish it off in six."

A major reason for the turnaround has been Frederik Andersen, who took over for John Gibson after Game 2 and stopped 27 shots Saturday in a third straight excellent performance.

Anaheim scored three times in the third period to overcome a 1-for-7 effort on the power play, which hasn't been very effective in this series. That power-play goal was a timely one, though, as Cam Fowler scored with 3:23 left to give the Ducks a two-goal lead.

"We have a chance to go there and close it (out), and we've got to do it," said forward David Perron, who had the tying goal in the second and assisted on Garbutt's tally.

The Ducks, tops in the league on the power play and penalty kill during the regular season, are 2 for 19 in this series with the man advantage. But they've extended their exceptional work while short-handed into the playoffs, holding the Predators to 1 for 22 on the power play.

"We had the most looks and the most chances, but there's not a lot of room out there," Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said after Saturday's contest. "After Game 1, they really clamped down."

Getzlaf has created plenty of problems for the Predators with two goals and three assists, and four other Ducks have two goals in the series as Anaheim's depth appears to be taking its toll on Laviolette's club.

Puck-moving defenseman Sami Vatanen recorded a goal and an assist Saturday and was a plus-3, improving him to plus-6 in the series. That ties defense partner Hampus Lindholm - with whom Vatanen was paired when Josh Manson was injured in Game 1 - for tops on the team.

"You look at any team that's won the (Stanley) Cup and it's never been smooth sailing though the playoffs," Predators center Ryan Johansen told the team's official website. "Adversity is going to hit and our backs are against the wall now. One thing in our favor is we're going home to a city that's going to be buzzing to try and help us and be there with us and support us.

"Our job is to throw on the jersey at home and try and bring it back here to Anaheim."

Johansen got his first goal of the series to open the scoring in the second period, but Perron's and Garbutt's goals followed in the next 2:10.

Nashville is 0-8 when losing three of the first five games in a playoff series. The Predators have dropped four of their last six postseason games at Bridgestone Arena, totaling four goals in the defeats and getting shut out twice.

They went 0 for 11 on the power play in Games 1 and 2.

"We're going to take the good things from this game, we're going to go home and regroup and be ready to play," Laviolette told the team's website. "I have no question that our guys will be ready."

                            • Preview: Blackhawks (47-26) at Blues (49-24)
                              Date: April 25, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

The St. Louis Blues had no Game 7 predictions late Saturday night. They were too busy fending off questions about their impending collapse.

While the Chicago Blackhawks are doing what they always seem to do, the Blues are facing a familiar first-round flop, one they will try to avoid when they head back to St. Louis for Monday night's series finale.

"It's going to be fun here to win it in Chicago."

That Game 6 prophecy of sorts from Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo suddenly sounds more like a Chicago rallying call.

It tanked hard Saturday night when the defending Stanley Cup champions scored five unanswered goals for a 6-3 win at United Center to force a winner-take-all finish.

Dale Weise capped a three-goal second period with the eventual winner, and Andrew Shaw scored in his return from a one-game suspension for hurling a gay slur at officials in Game 4. Those tallies helped the Blackhawks rally from a 3-1 deficit - just like they could in this series with one more victory.

Chicago improved to 45-15 in Games 4-7 and 15-1 in Game 6s in eight seasons under coach Joel Quenneville. The Blackhawks are 2-2 in Game 7s in that time, including a win and loss on the road.

"It's a testament again to our experience and the guys who haven't been here ... to really buy in and play the right way when we've been in this do-or-die position we've been in the last couple games," captain Jonathan Toews said. "You see what can happen when we all buy in, we all play the right way."

Toews is still yet to score in this series, but he had two assists Saturday. A Chicago attack that totaled eight goals through the first four games has 10 in the last two - starting with Thursday's 4-3 double-overtime win in Game 5.

St. Louis seemed to have the Blackhawks' number, winning three of five regular-season meetings and outplaying them early in this series.

However, a massive hit advantage shrank Saturday to 40-38, the narrowest yet. The physical play, which resulted in a fight from Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford and Shaw's outburst in Game 4, amounts to a 249-187 St. Louis advantage through six games.

While St. Louis has bested Chicago in the first and third periods, the middle 20 minutes has resulted in a 10-3 Blackhawks scoring edge.

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock also had to defend his use of star forward Vladimir Tarasenko, whose ice time was down in Game 6. Tarasenko appeared to confront Hitchcock when the team left the bench after the second period.

"Knowledgeable hockey people don't look at time, they look at shifts, and shifts matter," Hitchcock said. "The game he plays is a physical game. It's at the puck, it's around the puck, it's one on one and it's very demanding."

Brian Elliott was great the opening four games but has surrendered nine goals in the last two with an .871 save percentage. He was beaten three times on 19 shots in Saturday's second period, but Hitchcock is sticking with him.

"There's no bad goals," forward Paul Stastny said. "He's made the big saves when he's had to, and sometimes whether it's an odd-man rush or a rebound or we just lose our coverage, the goalie's not at fault."

The Blues have been knocked out in the opening round in each of the last three seasons, including a 2014 six-game series against the Blackhawks that they led 2-0.

"It's going to change eventually, so why not do it tomorrow?" Stastny said. "I think in here, we have that mentality that what happened in the past happened in the past. I think we all believe in each other."

                              • 'Hawks, Ducks try to close out on road
                                April 25, 2016

ST. LOUIS (AP) The Chicago Blackhawks have big-time momentum heading into Game 7.

It's not a must-win situation yet for the Anaheim Ducks, who'll also be trying to wrap up their first-round series on the road.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks are trying to climb back from a 3-1 series deficit. They erased an early two-goal deficit in Game 6 and then some, scoring five unanswered goals in a rout that evened the series against the Blues.

Plus, they've won two straight in St. Louis.

''We put ourselves in an awful spot a little while ago,'' Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said Sunday. ''We put ourselves exactly where we want to be (now).''

On the flight home, Blues coach Ken Hitchcock pondered what went wrong in the 6-3 loss and felt better before the plane landed. He said momentum means nothing entering Game 7.

''You have a visual of the game and then you start looking at the game,'' Hitchcock said. ''I really believe this: It's never as bad as you think it is, it's never as good as you think it is, and that was the feeling after watching it.''

Heading into Monday's showdown (8 p.m. EDT, NBCSN), history is against the Blues, who have lost in the first round the last three seasons. Roster turnover means not everybody is carrying around that burden, though.

''It's going to change eventually, so why not do it tomorrow?'' forward Paul Stastny said. ''I think in here, we have that mentality that what happened in the past happened in the past. I think we all believe in each other.''

The Blackhawks escaped deep deficits their last two Cup seasons, coming back from 3-2 down to beat Anaheim in the Western Conference finals last spring, and beating Detroit in the conference semifinals in 2013.

So, they've got a big experience edge: just three Blues have played a Game 7.

''I love playing in big games,'' Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook said. ''The bigger the game, the better I feel like I get ready or up for. This is the best time of the season.''

Now, the pressure perhaps shifts to the Blues.

''They're going to be excited,'' defenseman Duncan Keith said. ''So I think we've got to draw upon that experience and use some of the momentum we've got from last game and try to carry it over and take it from there. First shift, first five minutes, and keep it going.''

The Blues have blown a 3-1 series lead just once, in 2003 to Vancouver in the first round. But in the last four series they've lost since 2012 they've bowed out meekly.

Hitchcock hinted at possible lineup changes. But he's sticking with goalie Brian Elliott, who's played every game after a dominant finish to the regular season.

''There's no bad goals,'' Stastny said. ''He's made the big saves when he's had to, and sometimes whether it's an odd-man rush or a rebound or we just lose our coverage, the goalie's not at fault.''

Hitchcock defended his use of star forward Vladimir Tarasenko, whose ice time was down in Game 6. Tarasenko appeared to confront Hitchcock when the team left the bench after the second period Saturday night.

Hitchcock said Tarasenko plays a heavier game so needs shorter shifts, and noted he doesn't kill penalties. Nobody thought there would be lingering animosity.

''Knowledgeable hockey people don't look at time, they look at shifts, and shifts matter,'' Hitchcock said. ''The game he plays is a physical game. It's at the puck, it's around the puck, it's one on one and it's very demanding.''

                                ---

Ducks at Predators (8:30 p.m. EDT, CNBC).

Anaheim's 5-2 victory Saturday was the first by a home team in this series, so that could mean there's not much of an advantage for Nashville in Game 6.

Still, the Ducks realize it'll be tough to close this one out.

''We know we're going into a hornet's nest,'' coach Bruce Boudreau said. ''I'm sure they're sitting over there saying, `If we get it to a Game 7, we win.'''

Before Game 5, the road team had outscored the home team 13-5.

The key for the Ducks has been goalie Frederick Andersen, who has won three straight games.

''There have been pockets of time where you just know nothing is going to beat him unless it's something he can't see,'' Boudreau said. ''Hopefully, he can continue playing like that.''

The entire team enters Game 6 with confidence.

''I don't think a single guy in this room didn't think we'd be in this position,'' forward Ryan Kesler said.

The Predators have lost three straight since losing right wing Craig Smith (lower body) in Game 3. He skated Sunday in Nashville but is still listed as day to day.

Getting Smith back would be a big boost for Nashville given he has eight points in 11 career postseason games.

''We have to throw everything we've got,'' forward Ryan Johnson said.
