    Saturday's NHL Betting Preview

    New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (A: +151, H: -167, 5.5)

The New York Rangers appear to have escaped a potential devastating injury as they prepare to visit the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday in Game 2 of their best-of-seven first-round series. Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist was forced to exit Wednesday's 5-2 loss after taking an inadvertent stick to the right eye from teammate Marc Staal.

Lundqvist, who has started 111 consecutive playoff games for New York, was hurt in the final minute of the first period, but he practiced fully on Friday and is a game-time decision. "I felt pretty good," Lundqvist said. "Saw a specialist. There's no damage to the eye, it's the swelling making it uncomfortable." The Penguins have issues of their own in net with starter Marc-Andre Fleury and backup Matt Murray each dealing with a concussion. Pittsburgh could receive a huge boost, however, as standout forward Evgeni Malkin practiced Friday for the first time since sustaining an upper-body injury on March 11.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (46-28-9, 37-28 O/U): Lundqvist is expected to play as long as there are no adverse effects from Friday's practice and his importance to New York cannot be overstated - he entered the postseason winning his last four playoff starts at Pittsburgh while surrendering a total of four goals. Plus, the Rangers already have huge injury concerns among their defense corps, with captain Ryan McDonagh (hand) still sidelined and Dan Girardi ruled out after returning to the lineup for the series opener. Derek Stepan scored six times in the final nine games of the regular season and netted both goals Wednesday, prompting New York coach Alain Vigneault to tell reporters: "We need our top end players to play better. It’s time to make a difference.”

    ABOUT THE PENGUINS (49-26-8, 37-32 O/U):
Third-stringer Jeff Zatkoff made 35 saves in his first start since Feb. 20 while spelling Fleury, who suffered his second concussion of the season on March 31 and said of his availability for Game 2: "I don't expect it, but I hope so. It feels like it's been forever." It has been more than month on the shelf for Malkin, who was scoring at a point-per-game pace prior to his injury and adds another lethal weapon to an already-explosive offense, particularly on the power play. "He's one of the few players in the world that can change the game single-handedly," said Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan of Malkin, who was initially expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks. "We have more options with him in."

    TRENDS:

    * Rangers are 8-0 in their last eight games following a loss of three or more goals.
    * Penguins are 4-0 in the last four meetings.
    * Over is 5-1-1 in Penguins last seven versus a team with a winning record.
    * Over is 6-1-4 in Rangers last 11 road games.

    Philadelphia Flyers at Washington Capitals (A: +201, H: -225, 5.0)

After earning a share of the NHL's single-season wins record, goaltender Braden Holtby didn't see much work on his plate en route to helping the Washington Capitals draw first blood in their first-round series with the Philadelphia Flyers. Holtby looks to keep the Presidents' Trophy-winning Capitals cruising along when they host the Flyers in Game 2 on Saturday night.

The likely front-runner for the Vezina Trophy, Holtby prevented Philadelphia from gaining an early advantage by thwarting three first-period power plays and finished with 19 saves for his third career postseason shutout. "With a bunch of PKs, you have to rely on the goaltender quite a bit," forward Jay Beagle told reporters. "He obviously stood on his head again (Thursday). We had momentum coming (out of) the first." In addition to the scoreboard, the Flyers sustained a considerable loss as second-line center Sean Couturier suffered a reported AC sprain in his left shoulder and will be sidelined for two weeks, general manager Ron Hextall told reporters on Friday. "Obviously he is a huge piece of our team. He goes down, but someone else has to step up," fellow forward Wayne Simmonds told the team's website of the 23-year-old Couturier, who scored 11 goals and set up a career-high 28 others this season.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (41-28-14, 32-21 O/U): Versatile Brayden Schenn could shift from left wing to center on the team's second line and 21-year-old Scott Laughton could make his playoff debut in Couturier's absence. "If (Laughton) does go in, he's done a good job killing penalties for us so that's a potential role for him," coach Dave Hakstol said. "He hadn't spent a whole lot of time on the power play so I wouldn't expect that." Philadelphia has struggled with the man advantage of late, mustering little during its four chances on Thursday to push its run to 0-for-17 in its last five games - excluding a "meaningless" season finale versus the New York Islanders.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (57-18-8, 33-34 O/U): While captain Alex Ovechkin's crushing hit on Couturier along the boards garnered the majority of the headlines, Washington's players weren't shy about putting their bodies on the line throughout the contest. Ovechkin joined defensemen Brooks Orpik and Dmitry Orlov in posting a team-best four hits while 14 of the Capitals' 18 skaters notched at least one. In addition, Washington recorded 17 of its 23 blocked shots during the second and third periods of Game 1.

    TRENDS:

    * Flyers are 8-2 in their last 10 after scoring two goals or less in their previous game.
    * Capitals are 0-4 in their last four games following a win.
    * Under is 5-0 in Capitals last five games following a win.
    * Under is 3-0-1 in Flyers last four games playing on one days rest.

    Minnesota Wild at Dallas Stars (A: +182, H: -203, 5.0)

The Minnesota Wild knew they were facing a daunting task going up against the Western Conference's best team and that point was driven home by the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of their best-of-seven postseason series. Dallas breezed to a 4-0 victory on Thursday night and looks to take a commanding 2-0 lead in Saturday night's Game 2 over the visiting Wild.

Minnesota scored only six goals during a season-ending five-game losing streak and mustered only 22 shots on goal in Thursday's loss, prompting coach John Torchetti to shuffle his lines at Friday's practice. "The most important thing we got to understand is we can play with these guys, we can beat these guys," Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk said after the team's fifth consecutive postseason defeat. "There's no reason to think otherwise." Minnesota's task could become more daunting with the expected return of Stars forward Tyler Seguin to the lineup. Seguin, who missed the final 10 games of the regular season with a sliced Achilles tendon, finished tied for second on the team with 33 goals.

    ABOUT THE WILD (38-34-11, 29-36 O/U):
Minnesota's offensive woes are magnified by the injuries to leading goal scorer Zach Parise and Thomas Vanek, who combined for 94 points this season, but forward Erik Haula is planning to return to the lineup after missing the series opener due to a lower-body injury. “It’s a challenge," said Haula, who has registered 21 points in 27 games since Torchetti took over the coaching reins. "We came here for a split and I think everyone should just be positive and create a positive environment just overall everywhere of being able to accomplish the goal,” he said. Dubnyk was not as practice Friday, although Torchetti said his absence was simply due to "maintenance reasons."

ABOUT THE STARS (51-23-9, 45-37 O/U): Dallas has won 11 of 13 games since the injury to Seguin, who has amassed 107 goals in his three seasons with the Stars and said his condition is "night and day" since he returned to practice with the club on Monday. "Well, for me there's no comparison," coach Lindy Ruff said after Friday's practice. "Like I said, I thought his first day out on the ice he was OK, and today he just seems to be a lot more fluid, lot more jump, no hesitation. Like I said, those couple extra days are doing him well." Ruff did not disclose his starting goaltender for Game 2, but Kari Lehtonen's second career playoff shutout made it a toucher choice between him and the more experienced Antti Niemi.

    TRENDS:

    * Wild are 0-6 in their last six games overall.
    * Stars are 7-0 in their last seven home games.
    * Under is 5-1 in Stars last six games overall.
    * Wild are 4-22 in their last 26 meetings in Dallas.

    San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings (A: +129, H: -143, 5.0)

The San Jose Sharks set a franchise record when posting the best road record in the NHL during the regular season, and they continued their success away from home in their playoff opener. The Sharks look to take a firm hold on their first-round series when they visit the Los Angeles Kings for Game 2 on Saturday.

San Jose went 28-10-3 on the road during the regular season in 2015-16, recording the second-most victories away from home in league history, and carried over that success to Game 1 as it skated to a 4-3 victory. The opener featured several quick responses in the second period as Jeff Carter scored 40 seconds after defenseman Brent Burns gave San Jose a 2-1 lead and Los Angeles' 3-2 advantage lasted only 30 seconds thanks to Tomas Hertl's tally, before captain Joe Pavelski put the Sharks ahead for good 17 seconds into the third with his second goal of the game. The Kings certainly do not want to head to San Jose down 2-0 in the series but aren't likely to panic should it happen as they became the fourth team in NHL history to overcome a 3-0 deficit when these Pacific Division rivals last met in the postseason in 2014. Los Angeles would be wise to be more disciplined in Game 2 after giving San Jose's power play, which ranked third in the league during the regular season, four opportunities in the opener - one of which was converted.

    ABOUT THE SHARKS (47-30-6, 43-33 O/U):
It was no surprise that Pavelski, who recorded his sixth two-goal performance of his postseason career, scored the game-winner in Game 1 as he led the league in that category during the regular season with 11. "Big-game guy for us," coach Peter DeBoer told reporters. "He's our captain for a reason. He scores a lot of key goals. ... He's been clutch like that for us all season." Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic returned to the lineup Thursday after missing the last 12 regular-season contests with a knee injury and was none the worse for wear, logging a team-high 23 minutes, 23 seconds of ice time.

ABOUT THE KINGS (48-29-6, 29-32 O/U): Alec Martinez is a question mark for Game 2 as he left the opener after blocking a shot late in the second period and did not return for the third. The defenseman was playing his first game after missing the final four of the regular season with an undisclosed injury. Trevor Lewis scored a short-handed goal in the opener, Los Angeles' first in the postseason since Anze Kopitar tallied while down a player in 2012.

    TRENDS:

    * Sharks are 4-1 in their last five games overall.
    * Road team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
    * Over is 6-1-1 in Kings last eight Conference Quarterfinals games.
    * Under is 7-1-1 in Sharks last nine road games.

            Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- UNLV hired Marvin Menzies as its new basketball coach, its 4th coach since January 10, when they fired coach/alum Dave Rice.

-- Hawks 102, Celtics 101-- Boston was down 17 at the half, but scored 67 points in second half, still lost.

-- Pacers 100, Raptors 90-- Toronto last playoff series win was in 2001 (0-5 since)

-- Matt Harvey is 0-3, 5.71 this season; should the Mets be concerned?

-- Felix Hernandez has had 34 starts in his career where he didn't allow a run but still didn't win the game.

-- Oakland A's were 256-175 while they had Yoenis Cespedes; they're 95-134 since they traded him away on July 31, 2014.

            **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: More thoughts on the NFL schedule......

            13) New England is currently (even) in its season opener at Arizona; Patriots have been favored in their last twelve season openers.

            12) If you play fantasy football, Cleveland/Houston will be first teams since 2001 with Week 13 byes, which is often the last week of the fantasy leagues' regular season.

            11) Oakland Raiders get their first Sunday night home game in 10 years when Denver comes calling in Week 9.

            10) Miami Dolphins requested to be on the road in Weeks 1-2, because their stadium is being refurbished.

            9) Five teams opened with consecutive road games LY; of those five, Seattle was only one to make the playoffs.

            8) Washington (weeks 12-14), Green Bay (weeks 10-12), are only teams with three-game road trips this season. Teams playing their third week in row on road are generally very poor bets.

            7) If you want to draft Aaron Rodgers in fantasy, keep in mind his three playoff games (weeks 14-16) will be two games at Lambeau, one in Chicago, not the best weather scenarios.

            6) Tampa Bay's three away games in December: Dallas-New Orleans and San Diego- thats two domes and San Diego, so probably no weather issues.

            5) USC requested the Rams not have any primetime home games, because they generally fall on school nights- Seriously, they did- Rams/USC will share the LA Coliseum for the next three years. They must roll up the sidewalks pretty early in Tinseltown, so the kids can do their homework. .

            4) Texans/Jets will both play four games on short work weeks this season, most in NFL. Kansas City is the only NFL team with one game on short rest.

            3) Oakland Raiders have five 1:00 ET games this year, most in NFL; LA Rams have four, plus a game in England that looks like it is going to start at 6:30am LA time. Terrific.

            2) Carolina Panthers have already been bet down from +2.5 to +1 for their season opener in Denver. Line should move again when we finally figure out who the Broncos' QB is going to be.

            1) Ridiculous amounts of NFL mock drafts have been done the last few months; when the Rams/Titans swung their big trade the other day, every single one of them went in the ashcan.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Sunday's NHL betting preview
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberto Luongo and the Panthers will try to reclaim home ice advantage with a win over the Isle's Sunday.

                St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks (A: +131, H: -145, O/U: 5)

                Series tied 1-1

The Chicago Blackhawks found themselves on the fortunate side of a pair of coach's challenges en route to evening their first-round series with the St. Louis Blues at one victory apiece. The Blackhawks hope their good fortune travels up Interstate 55 to the United Center on Sunday afternoon as the bitter Central Division rivals play Game 3 of their set.

"When you play the defending Cup champions, you're going to have to fight through a lot of stuff," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said following a 3-2 setback on Friday. "Calls aren't going to go your way, you're not going to get the officiating you want. It's always going to seem like it's one-sided. Big deal, fight through it." Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 11th career playoff goal and seventh in his past eight games to open the scoring, but his apparent second tally of the game midway into the third period was overturned by an offside call. St. Louis' troubles continued 3 1/2 minutes later as Andrew Shaw's tally was upheld by review in Toronto and again following a coach's challenge for goaltender interference. The Blues failed to recover from the momentum shift and suffered the loss as the series heads to the United Center, which they have lost three straight playoff games.

TV: 3 p.m. ET, NBC, TVAS, SN

ABOUT THE BLUES: While Hitchcock's comments received plenty of airtime, center Paul Stastny told reporters on Saturday that the team has moved on from the result. "If you worry too much about it, those are the teams that will be unsuccessful and kind of use that as an excuse," Stastny told reporters. "It's early in the series. It's frustrating, yeah, but I think once we woke up this morning, we already forgot about it and we're focused on (Sunday)." Captain David Backes scored in overtime of the series opener and had an assist on Friday to extend his point streak to six games (three goals, five assists).

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Stud defenseman Duncan Keith returned with a flourish from his six-game suspension, collecting a goal and an assist on Friday while logging one second short of 31 minutes of ice time. "He's a horse back there, so useful in all areas and he's a threat in a lot of different ways," coach Joel Quenneville told CSN Chicago. The same can be said for captain Jonathan Toews, who has recorded a team-high 11 shots and won 27-of-47 faceoffs (57.4 percent).

                TRENDS:

                * Blues are 13-3 in their last 16 road games.
                * Blackhawks are 9-3 in their last 12 Conference Quarterfinals games.
                * Over is 8-1-2 in Blues last 11 games playing on one days rest.
                * Over is 10-2-6 in Blackhawks last 18 games playing on one days rest.

                Tampa Bay Lightning at Detroit Red Wings (A: +109, H: -120, O/U: 5)

                Lightning lead series 2-0

The Detroit Red Wings have not found the answer to slowing down Tyler Johnson in the playoffs over the last two seasons and are running out of time as they host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday for Game 3 of their first-round series. Johnson scored six times in last year’s seven-game battle and has a pair of goals to go with four assists in two victories to open the postseason in 2016.

Lightning center Brian Boyle told reporters after Friday’s 5-2 victory in Game 2 that Johnson “has found another gear. He’s flying out there.” Johnson, along with linemates Nikita Kucherov and Alex Killorn, have combined for 15 points in the first two games and Detroit forward Dylan Larkin told reporters: “They’re opportunistic. … They get a lot of free space and you have to back check hard and play the body a little more. We’re not making it hard enough on them.” The Red Wings are also 1-for-10 on the power play and continue to give up too many Grade A chances at even strength. “We’re going to make some mistakes, that’s the reality of life,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill told reporters. “But we’ve had opportunities in the last two games to win the hockey game and we didn’t win it.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CNBC, CBC, TVAS, FSN Detroit, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Johnson’s four points Friday tied a single-game franchise record in the playoffs set by Vincent Lecavalier in 2011, and Ryan Callahan told reporters: “He likes this time of year and he’s showing it.” The defense pairing of Braydon Coburn and Nikita Nesterov have raised their games, combining for three assists and a plus-5 rating in front of goaltender Ben Bishop (64 saves, 68 shots). Versatile forward J.T. Brown suffered an upper-body injury in Game 2 and is out indefinitely.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS: Larkin responded after a quiet Game 1 with his first playoff goal and three hits Friday while veterans Pavel Datsyuk (eight shots) and captain Henrik Zetterberg (three) are looking for their first point. The Red Wings’ defense has recorded six of their 11 points in the first two games, led by Mike Green with a goal and an assist. Goalie Jimmy Howard has allowed seven goals on 64 shots and Blashill told reporters any decisions on lineup changes would be decided Sunday.

                TRENDS:

                * Home team is 7-0 in the last seven meetings.
                * Red Wings are 0-6 in their last six versus a team with a winning record.
                * Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Detroit.
                * Over is 8-1-1 in Lightning last 10 games following a win.

                Florida Panthers at New York Islanders (A: +106, H: -117, O/U: 5)

                Series tied 1-1

Postseason hockey will be on display for the first time at Barclays Center as the New York Islanders look to get the upper hand in the first-round series on Sunday when they host the Florida Panthers in Game 3. The Islanders split a pair of encounters with Atlantic Division-champion Florida in Brooklyn this season en route to posting a 25-11-5 mark at their new home.

"We know what kind of environment our fans can create and we're counting on them and we want to feed off them," said New York captain John Tavares, who has scored a goal in six straight contests and has two tallies and two assists in the first two contests of this series. Tavares ended Roberto Luongo's shutout bid late in the third period of Friday's 3-1 setback, with the veteran goaltender recording 41 saves to snap a personal seven-game losing skid in the postseason. Reilly Smith continued his stellar series by joining Nick Bjugstad and defenseman Dmitry Kulikov with a goal and an assist in Game 2. "It seems like the puck is following me around a little bit," Smith told the Miami Herald of the five points he's record in the series, matching the sum total of his previous 12 playoff games.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, SN, TVAS2, FSN Florida, MSG-Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS: Veteran Jaromir Jagr may have lost a tooth during Game 2, but he was unable to gain a goal as Florida's leading scorer has gone 33 consecutive postseason games without a tally. "Maybe it will bring me luck," Jagr told the Miami Herald of the lost tooth as he's looking for his first playoff goal since scoring in Game 2 of Philadelphia's first-round series against Pittsburgh in 2012. Linemates Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau have yet to score in the series, but the former has a team high-tying 10 shots on goal while the latter has nine.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS: Defenseman Nick Leddy saw plenty of positives in his team despite the outcome of Friday's contest, his assist on Tavares' tally notwithstanding. "Our breakouts were good and we turned it on them (on Friday)," Leddy told Newsday. "We got pucks in deep, we worked their (defense). We're doing the things we did at the end of the regular season, playing how we need to play." Coach Jack Capuano had a harsher assessment of the game, going so far as to say that the team left Thomas Greiss "out to dry" on Florida's first two tallies.

                TRENDS:

                * Panthers are 5-1 in their last six games playing on one days rest.
                * Panthers are 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                * Over is 5-1-1 in Islanders last seven overall.
                * Over is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings in New York.

                Nashville Predators at Anaheim Ducks (A: +144, H: -160, O/U: 5)

                Predators lead series 1-0

Having wrested away home ice with a hard-fought victory in Game 1, the visiting Nashville Predators can put the Anaheim Ducks on the ropes when the teams continue their Western Conference first-round series Sunday night. Filip Forsberg's third-period goal off a fluke deflection proved to be the difference in Nashville's 3-2 victory on Friday night.

The Predators have a chance to take command of the series with a second straight victory on the road but coach Peter Laviolette does not want his team looking ahead. "We’ll have our work cut out for us in Game 2," Laviolette said. "To get off to the right start is a good thing. There’s so much hockey left to be played.” Anaheim, which clinched the Pacific Division title and No. 2 seed on the final day of the regular season, has not lost back-to-back home games since Nov. 11-13 and last faced the Predators on Nov. 17 prior to the series opener. "The one thing, when you haven’t seen a team since November and you get to see them now, at least you know what you’re up against," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "We’ll reset and hopefully come out and play an awful lot better Sunday.”

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TVAS, Sportsnet, FSN Tennessee (Nashville), FSN West (Anaheim)

                ABOUT THE PREDATORS
: James Neal, who netted 31 goals during the regular season, scored 35 seconds into Game 1 and never slowed down, registering a game-high nine shots to help Nashville to a 33-29 edge. "For us, we just want to be in the offensive zone getting looks and I think we did that," said Neal, who lauded linemate Ryan Johansen for his success. "He was making great plays. I like the way his game was. He gave me some great chances. I like the way our line played the first game." Colin Wilson, who set a franchise record with five goals in a playoff series a year ago but scored only six times in the regular season, continued his postseason magic with a tally in Game 1.

                ABOUT THE DUCKS:
Boudreau declined to announce his starter in net for Game 2 - "I don't want to talk about my goalies" - after John Gibson (30 saves) got the nod in the opener, getting victimized by a one-handed redirection by Wilson and Forsberg's tally that went off the skate of Ducks defenseman Shea Theodore. Fellow blue-liner Josh Manson (head/upper body) was knocked out of the game after absorbing a thunderous hit from Forsberg in the first period, leaving his status unknown for Game 2. Defenseman Kevin Bieksa, sidelined since March 24 due to an upper-body injury, was on the ice during Saturday's optional skate and is "eligible to play" if Manson is unable to go, according to Boudreau.

                TRENDS:

                * Home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                * Ducks are 6-1 in their last seven Conference Quarterfinals games.
                * Over is 17-4-5 in the last 26 meetings.
                * Over is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings in Anaheim.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

                      13) So which QB do the Rams take with the first pick in the draft? Spent an hour this morning watching Jon Gruden's TV shows with Goff/Wentz, trying to learn about both guys, while seeing if Gruden preferred either guy. Hard to tell.

One thing: Goff is a huge SF Giants baseball fan; you wonder if he's a 49er fan too; if he is, kind of awkward to make him the cornerstone of the Rams' franchise.

                      12) 18 years ago, Colts/Chargers had #1, #2 picks in the draft; there was a standoff in the media which QB rpsopect was the better one, no one seemed to know. Turns out that Peyton Manning was the right choice and Ryan Leaf wasn't. But make no mistake about it, at the time a lot of smart people thought Leaf was the better choice.

                      11) Apparently, Tennessee is using the extra picks it got from the Rams to try and get back in the top 10 of the first round.

                      10) Since 1999 in the NBA playoffs, #7 seeds are 1-33 in first round series against the #2 seeds. I've long believed that best-of-7 series are too long in these first round series. It just gets boring watching the #1, #2 seeds pummel inferior teams.

                      9) In 1981, Mike Schmidt was baseball's highest paid player; he made $2,130,000.

                      8) Disney has six Star Wars movies planned, all the way thru 2020; its like having this out-of-control printing press in your cellar that just constantly churns out money.

                      7) On July 2, 2013, the Orioles traded Jake Arrieta, Pedro Strop and cash to the Cubs, for Scott Feldman, Steve Clevenger. Oy. Arrieta hasn't allowed a run at Wrigley Field since last July, thats six scoreless home starts in a row.

                      6) Couple years ago, Steve Kerr turned down the Knicks' coaching job and went to the Warriors; now his assistant Luke Walton is doing the same thing.

                      5) Brooklyn Nets hired Hawks' assistant Kenny Atkinson as their new coach; he is said to be a very strong player development coach.

                      4) On Opening Day, there were 82 Dominican-born major leaguers, an average of three per team. You wonder how the language barrier affects players who weren't born in this country. If I owned a big league team, all my coaches would have to know how to speak Spanish. Communication is very important.

                      3) Former Iona star AJ English was VP of the Portsmouth tournament this weekend; we'll see if that helps him get drafted in June.

                      2) Dodgers started Howie Kendrick at 3B this week, first time he's started there since 2006; they also started him in LF, first time he's started there since 2011.

                      1) Florida State has played in 34 consecutive bowls, the longest current streak in college football; Virginia Tech is next at 23, then Georgia at 19. Funny that all three schools have changed coaches in the last six years, Va Tech and Georgia this year.

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Monday's NHL betting preview
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Entering the playoffs the Kings were one of the favorites to hoist the cup (6/1), but if they can't figure out a way to solve their former teammate Martin Jones they could be heading home early.

Eliminations from the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs are going to begin this week. Three teams hit the ice Monday night facing 2-0 series deficits but none are in a more dire situation than the Los Angeles Kings.

                            Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers (A: -150, H: +130, O/U: 5)

                            Capitals lead series 2-0

The Washington Capitals have benefited from stellar special teams play and a 101-foot goal to win the initial two contests of their first-round series with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Presidents' Trophy-winning Capitals look to push their Metropolitan Division rivals to the brink of elimination on Monday when the series shifts to Philadelphia for Game 3.

Defenseman John Carlson scored a power-play goal in each contest for the Capitals, who are 3-for-8 with the man advantage and thwarted all eight short-handed situations. Jason Chimera was credited with the game-winning tally in Saturday's 4-1 victory, albeit with a tip-in from center ice that somehow saw the puck squeeze between the pads of Steve Mason. The humiliating gaffe was so unfathomable that Washington's Braden Holtby admittedly felt for his fellow goaltender. "I couldn't even watch the replay of it," said Holtby, who has looked every bit the front-runner for the Vezina Trophy by stopping 60-of-61 shots in the series. "Even as an opposing team, you want to earn your goals and what-not (instead of) weird bounces like that. I feel for him."

                            MATCHUP CHART:

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (58-16-8, 38-45 ATS, 33-34 O/U): Captain Alex Ovechkin traditionally has tormented the Flyers with his scoring, but the 240-pound Russian has also lowered the boom with his physical play (11 hits). Ovechkin sidelined Sean Couturier for the rest of the series with a crushing hit in Game 1 and deposited Brayden Schenn over the boards and into the laps of his teammates on Saturday, signaling a shift in the momentum of Game 2. "Sometimes you just have to play physical," Ovechkin told the Washington Post. "If you don't have an opportunity to do something else, you play physical. You play simple and the other guys are going to follow you."

ABOUT THE FLYERS (41-29-14, 46-38 ATS, 32-31 O/U): Although held without a point in the first two games, captain Claude Giroux was encouraged by Philadelphia's 42-23 edge in shots Saturday and expressed optimism that the series shifts to the Wells Fargo Center. "We've been playing well at home this year," Giroux told Philly.com of the Flyers, who posted a 23-10-8 mark in the City of Brotherly Love - including a 2-1 shootout victory over visiting Washington on March 30. Jakub Voracek has scored the lone goal for the Flyers, who were unable to grab their first lead of the series after failing to convert during 67 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play late in the opening period of Game 2.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Capitals are 11-0 in their last 11 Monday games.
                            * Home team is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
                            * Under is 5-0-1 in Capitals last 6 games following a win.
                            * Under is 3-0-2 in Flyers last 5 games playing on 1 days rest.

                            Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild (A: -130, H: +110, O/U: 5)

                            Stars lead series 2-0

The Minnesota Wild already face an uphill climb against the Dallas Stars and it's becoming even more of a struggle when the bounces are not going their way. The Wild will be hoping to reverse the momentum when the first-round series shifts to Minnesota on Monday night after the Stars won Games 1 and 2 in Dallas.

A stunning goal that ricocheted off the skates of two players and caromed off the back of the head of Wild netminder Devan Dubnyk provided the impetus for the Stars in Saturday's 2-1 victory - the seven straight defeat overall for Minnesota and sixth in a row in the postseason. “The puck is kicked and somehow they have enough to overturn the ref’s call,” Dubnyk said of the opening goal by Antoine Roussel. “It’s mind-blowing that that’s the outcome of that play in the playoffs.” Minnesota scored its first goal of the series in the third period Saturday night and was buzzing for the equalizer in the waning moments, displaying an offensive spark that it hopes to carry over into Game 3. The Wild will need a huge effort against the top-seeded Stars, who have won 11 of 13 dating to the regular season and outscored Minnesota 6-1 in the first two games.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET; CNBC, Sportsnet, TVAS 2, FSN Southwest (Dallas), FSN North/Wisconsin (Minnesota)

                            MATCHUP CHART:

ABOUT THE STARS (52-23-9, 42-42 ATS, 45-38 O/U): While Roussel's bizarre tally was the main talking point of Game 2, Dallas captain Jamie Benn continued to torment Minnesota by providing the dagger with a third-period goal - his second of the series and ninth point in five meetings with the Wild this season. “Best scorer in the league,” Wild coach John Torchetti told the media after the game. “Can’t be letting him get a breakaway.” Stars coach Lindy Ruff said at Sunday's practice that Mattias Janmark will return to the lineup Monday while taking a wait-and-see approach on fellow forward Tyler Seguin, who played Saturday after missing 11 games due to an Achilles tendon injury.

ABOUT THE WILD (38-35-11, 40-44 ATS, 29-37 O/U): Minnesota needs to find a way to manufacture more offense during the continued absence of leading goal scorer Zach Parise, who is no closer to returning from a back injury that has sidelined him since the next-to-last game of the regular season, as well as that of 18-goal scorer Thomas Vanek. Captain Mikko Koivu, who topped the team with 56 points during the regular season, is mired in a 10-game goal drought, while forward Mikael Granlund did register a game-high seven shots on goal Saturday after he was shifted from center to wing. "I've got to put the puck in the net with those chances," Granlund said. "That's the bottom line."

                            TRENDS:

                            * Stars are 6-0 in their last 6 vs. Central.
                            * Wild are 0-7 in their last 7 overall.
                            * Under is 6-0 in Stars last 6 games following a win.
                            * Under is 4-0 in Wild last 4 vs. Western Conference.
                            * Stars are 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.

                            Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks (A: +100, H: -120, O/U: 5)

                            Sharks lead series 2-0

The Los Angeles Kings find themselves in an unenviable position in their first-round series against the San Jose Sharks, but it's nothing they haven't experienced before. The Kings look to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole versus San Jose for the second time in three years when they visit the Sharks in Game 3 on Monday.

Los Angeles was in that situation in 2014 and went on to become the fourth team in Stanley Cup playoff history to rally from the deficit and win the series, but the club knows how difficult the task was and does not want to be forced to repeat it. "It’s a completely different situation," Kings center Anze Kopitar told reporters after Saturday's 2-1 loss. "Our mind set’s got to be to go out there and win the next game and just build off that. That’s where we’re putting in our heads tonight, we’re going to prepare tomorrow and we’re going to go up there and be better." The fact the Kings dropped the first two contests at home - both one-goal decisions - should come as no surprise as the Sharks recorded a franchise-record 28 victories on the road during the regular season for the second-most in NHL history. San Jose captain Joe Pavelski continues to be a thorn in Los Angeles' side, recording three goals and an assist over the first two games after registering four tallies and 10 points in five regular-season meetings.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, CBC, TVA, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), CSN California (San Jose)

                            MATCHUP CHART:

ABOUT THE KINGS (48-30-6, 28-56 ATS, 29-33 O/U): Marian Gaborik returned to the lineup Saturday after missing the team's final 28 regular-season games with a sprained knee and had a solid game, recording four shots in 14 minutes, 32 seconds of ice time en route to being named the Third Star of the Game. "I thought after being off nine weeks, nine and a half weeks, I thought he played really well," coach Darryl Sutter told reporters. "I thought Gabby was our best winger." Defenseman Jamie McBain replaced the injured Alec Martinez in the lineup in Game 2 and blocked three shots in 16:14 of ice time in his first career playoff game.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (48-30-6, 40-44 ATS, 43-34 O/U): Joe Thornton notched his first point of the series Saturday as he helped set up Pavelski's game-opening goal. It was the veteran center's 77th career postseason assist, tying him with Claude Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, Bobby Clarke and Ken Linseman for 41st place on the all-time list. Martin Jones is 5-1-1 against his former team but credits his defensemen for his playoff success. "We’ve done a great job both games keeping them to the outside," he told reporters. "They’re a team that likes to crash the net and take pucks to the net, and we’ve done a really good job. The other thing is just shot-blocking. Throughout the year, it’s been great."

                            TRENDS:

                            * Kings are 1-5 in their last 6 road games.
                            * Sharks are 11-2 in their last 13 vs. a team with a winning record.
                            * Over is 6-1-3 in Kings last 10 after allowing 2 goals or less in their previous game.
                            * Over is 5-1 in Sharks last 6 home games.
                            * Road team is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.
