            • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Hornets 129, Kings 128 2OT-- DeMarcus Cousins scored 56 before fouling out.

-- Miami 80, Duke 69-- Simply put, Duke isn't very good right now.

-- Iowa State 85, Kansas 72-- Third straight road loss for the Jayhawks.

-- This is Peyton Manning's 4th Super Bowl, under four different head coaches.

-- Zach Ertz gets $42.5M ($20M guaranteed) for five years from the Eagles.

-- Warriors 120, Spurs 90-- Curry didn't even play in fourth quarter.

              **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

              13) TV ratings for Sunday's football games were up 8% from LY, despite the NFC game being a lousy game to watch, so good for the league there.

              12) Carolina LB Thomas Davis broke his arm Sunday, but expects to play in Super Bowl, reminiscent of Jack Youngblood playing in Super Bowl XIV with a broken leg he suffered in a playoff game.

              11) Obscure fact of the day: This is the 11th Super Bowl in a row with at least one Texas Longhorn alum playing in it.

              10) There are 33 undrafted free agents playing in the Super Bowl this year- it isn't ridiculous to suggest an NFL team's personnel guy is more important than the team's coaching staff. You have to have good players to coach.

              9) In two games against Denver this season, the Patriots were 4-28 on third down. In the regular season, New England was 88-215 (40.9%) on third down.

              8) Southern Mississippi needs a new football coach; Todd Monken is the new OC of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Signing Day for college football recruiting is eight days away, so this is an awkward time for that to happen.

              7) Bulls' coach Fred Hoiberg is so popular in Ames, Iowa that he is known as The Mayor; he played and was later the coach at Iowa State. Hoiberg's daughter goes to rival Kansas, where she works part-time in the basketball office.

              6) There are obviously 12 teams in the Pac-12; eight of their 12 basketball teams are either 5-2 or 4-3 in the standings right now. Cluttered race.

              5) Washington Huskies are getting more points from their freshmen than any team in the country. Lorenzo Romar has done a tremendous rebuilding job this year- they basically blew up their team from LY and started over, and it has worked.

              4) Siena's Lavon Long made all seven of his shots at Canisius Sunday; he was also 11-11 on the foul line, the first college player to put up numbers like that since 2001.

              3) Reading a lot about the Lebron James/David Blatt stuff from last week, it dawns on me that Blatt might be better suited as a college coach. He seems to have a fairly big ego and in the NBA, until you've won an NBA title, coaches don't get a whole lot of respect from the players. College hoop is more of a coaches' game.

              2) Sales at McDonald's were up 5.7% in the 4th quarter of 2015, the first quarter in which McDonald's offered 24-hour breakfasts. Smart idea that was long overdue.

              1) Place called Glengary, WV had 42 inches of snow last weekend- thats 3.5 feet of snow!!!!! New York City had 26.5 inches, their 2nd-most ever.

                        • Preview: Flyers (18-18) at Capitals (33-8)
                          Date: January 27, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

With two weather postponements and the All-Star break, the Washington Capitals will end up playing one game in 13 days before returning to action Feb. 2.

That one game might prove to not be all that taxing, with the Philadelphia Flyers visiting Wednesday night needing to beat the best team in hockey to avoid entering the break with a four-game losing streak. The Capitals, meanwhile, are in position to match the longest home winning streak in franchise history.

Washington (35-8-3) had the first two of a five-game homestand straddling the break postponed due to the East Coast snowstorm over the weekend, so it hasn't played since a 6-3 win in Columbus on Jan. 19.

Nicklas Backstrom scored twice and Evgeny Kuznetsov had four assists, giving the him seven in his last two games and 10 points in four. Andre Burakovsky scored and has seven of his 17 points in the last five games, while Marcus Johansson has a goal in three straight.

"Right now it feels like we have good balance in the group," Backstrom said. "We're working hard, all four lines."

The power play was 2 for 2 with goals from Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin, giving the Capitals an 11-for-32 mark in the last 11 games. Even so, coach Barry Trotz probably isn't displeased with the extra time off.

"I thought we lacked a little bit of juice today," Trotz told the team's official website. "I think the three (games) in four (nights) caught up with us a little bit. And I thought (the Blue Jackets) came out really well. I thought (goaltender Braden Holtby) was really good.

" ... Obviously our power play set the tone; we scored right away so we just kept them out there and we got two. That gave us some separation."

Refreshed, the Capitals are in position to match a 13-game home winning streak from 2009-10 as their longest ever.

Washington opened the season series with a 5-2 win at Philadelphia on Nov. 12, though the Flyers have taken six of the last eight meetings.

Philadelphia (20-18-8) also had a game postponed Saturday but returned Monday to similar results - a 3-2 home loss to Boston for its third straight one-goal regulation defeat. The Flyers fell behind 2-0 in the first period before Wayne Simmonds scored twice, but they were denied a point on Brett Connolly's goal with 1:54 left.

"You push so hard all night to try and get a point out of it and come up empty-handed," center Brayden Schenn told the team's official website. "So we have to try and throw this one behind us because if we dwell on this one too much, we're going to go into Washington and it's not going to be a pretty game if we keep thinking about this one."

The losing streak has come with the Flyers going 5 for 13 on the power play, but they've wiped that out in the last two games by going 4 for 8 on the penalty kill.

Steve Mason is expected to be in goal for the Flyers. He's faced an average of 35.8 shots in his last four games and is in danger of matching a season-worst four-game losing streak.

He's gone 5-4-2 with a 3.34 goals-against average in his last 12 games against Washington.

Holtby is 24-2-2 with a 1.94 GAA over his last 29 games but has posted a 3.26 mark and 3-4-3 record in his last 11 appearances in the series.

                          • Preview: Maple Leafs (13-20) at Lightning (24-18)
                            Date: January 27, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Ben Bishop and the Tampa Bay Lightning took a step back last time out after a dominant stretch by the team and its trusty goaltender.

A matchup with the punchless Toronto Maple Leafs could be exactly what both need to bounce back.

While the Lightning attempt to enter the All-Star break with some renewed momentum, the Maple Leafs simply hope to build some when the teams meet Wednesday night.

The Lightning's season-high seven-game winning streak came undone by one bad period Saturday at Florida, where the upstart Panthers increased their lead on their in-state rivals in the Atlantic Division with a 5-2 victory. Four of those goals came during a second period in which Tampa Bay (26-18-4) was outshot by a 19-5 margin.

'We got away (from) what's made us successful the past couple games,' captain Steven Stamkos said.

After allowing just four goals total in winning his four previous starts, Bishop permitted four on 30 shots before being removed at the second intermission.

The All-Star netminder likely won't see such a barrage from a Maple Leafs team that's scored a mere 11 goals in losing eight of nine, and none in 23 power-play chances over the last eight.

'We have lots of work to do,' coach Mike Babcock said. 'When you see the really good teams play and you see their talent base, you see where we've got to get to and we all understand that. It's going to be a process. That doesn't make it any easier on game night.'

Toronto (17-21-9) had showed signs of slight progress by earning at least one point in three straight prior to Tuesday's 5-1 defeat at Florida, now seven points ahead of the fourth-place Lightning in the Atlantic. The Maple Leafs were outscored 5-0 over the final two periods in dropping a third straight.

'They got going, we made mistakes and they capitalized,' Babcock said. 'We had lots of chances, too, but we didn't capitalize. We've seen that before.'

Toronto hasn't recorded a power-play goal since James van Riemsdyk fractured his foot on Jan. 9, though it's lacked production from most of its top healthy forwards of late. Leo Komarov has scored just one of his team-leading 16 goals in the past 15 games, Tyler Bozak has none in 13 straight and P.A. Parenteau has two assists over his last nine.

Nazem Kadri has scored in two straight, however, after registering the game's first goal on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay continues to get consistent offense from Nikita Kucherov, who assisted on Victor Hedman's goal Saturday to extend his point streak to eight games. The 22-year-old has six goals and five assists over that span and 28 points in 22 games since Dec. 5, second only to Patrick Kane's 32 for most in the league during that period.

Hedman has 10 points over his last eight games while remaining a vital part of a penalty kill that's 41 of 45 during a 15-game stretch.

After James Reimer started Tuesday's loss, Jonathan Bernier will get the nod for this one. Bernier owns a 2.57 goals-against average over his past five starts but has lost two straight, coming up with 42 saves in a 3-2 defeat at Boston on Jan. 16 and surrendering seven goals at San Jose a week earlier.

Bernier made 22 saves in Toronto's 5-4 home overtime loss to the Lightning on Dec. 15, in which Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov each posted a goal and an assist.

The Maple Leafs have lost three straight at Tampa Bay and five of the last seven overall in the series.

                            • Preview: Predators (21-18) at Flames (20-23)
                              Date: January 27, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

While the Calgary Flames can boast some very impressive accomplishments this season, they would surely exchange those for being in better position at the All-Star break.

Calgary heads into its final game before the layoff Wednesday night looking to rebound from a disappointing road trip in a matchup with the Nashville Predators.

The Flames ended a five-year playoff drought last season and surprised many with a first-round win over Vancouver before falling to Anaheim in the Western Conference semifinals.

With that success came expectations, and Calgary has been unable to meet those through the first half.

Although the Flames (21-23-3) won seven straight in December - their longest streak in 10 years - and set a franchise record with 11 consecutive home victories, they are 13th in the conference and 10 points out of a playoff spot.

A slow start and failure to capitalize on the power play sent Calgary to a 2-1 loss at Dallas on Monday, capping a 1-3-1 trip. Joe Colborne scored early in the third period after Karri Ramo allowed two goals 80 seconds apart in the second.

'We kind of woke up too late to play,' said Ramo, whose team was outshot 10-3 in the opening period. 'Against a team like that, you have to start pushing right away.'

Calgary was scoreless on five power-play chances for the second straight game and is 2 for 21 in the past six.

"We got to start from the get-go next game," captain Mark Giordano said. "We have one more before the break that we have to have, and then we'll get some rest and go from there."

It's no surprise that Johnny Gaudreau's production is tied directly to Calgary's success. The Flames are 11-2-0 in games Gaudreau scores at least one goal and 10-21-3 when he fails to find the net.

He's also been a much more productive player at home, tallying 17 goals and 33 of his team-leading 46 points there. He has just three goals and 13 points in 24 road contests.

Nashville (23-18-8) has an opportunity to head into the break with its longest win streak of the season after beating Vancouver 2-1 on Tuesday. James Neal snapped a tie with 4:44 remaining and Pekka Rinne turned aside 28 shots to keep the Predators perfect on their four-game trip through Canada.

'We're fighting to play for a Stanley Cup here," Neal said. "And right now with how tight the West is, you have to do anything you can to grab points to get into the playoffs. That's where our team is at.'

Defense and goaltending have keyed Nashville's three straight wins. After allowing 3.5 goals during a 2-6-2 stretch, the Predators have surrendered one in each game during the run.

Rinne has a .963 save percentage in those three games but has only played once this season on consecutive days. He's also never fared well in Calgary, going 1-5-0 with a 3.48 goals-against average in nine starts.

Backup Carter Hutton stopped 29 shots in a 3-0 victory over Minnesota on Jan. 16 in his most recent appearance.

He could be asked to help the Predators win four consecutive road games for the first time since Dec. 31, 2010-Jan. 8, 2011.

Kris Russell's overtime goal lifted the Flames to a 2-1 victory at Nashville on Dec. 15, their fourth consecutive win in the series.

The Predators are 8-1-3 against Canadian teams this season.

                              • Preview: Avalanche (25-22) at Kings (28-15)
                                Date: January 27, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

Though Semyon Varlamov has yet to know the extent of his legal troubles, they've already impacted the Colorado Avalanche in the short term.

With their No. 1 goaltender still away from the team, the Avalanche attempt to shake off a lopsided loss when they visit the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Kings Wednesday night.

Varlamov's superb play carried Colorado (26-22-3) to four consecutive wins entering Tuesday's game at San Jose, which he missed as a defendant in a civil trial brought by his ex-girlfriend over an alleged domestic violence incident in October 2013. In his absence, fill-ins Calvin Pickard and Roman Will surrendered five goals on 23 shots as the Avalanche were routed 6-1.

Varlamov had yielded only four goals total during the streak, and his performance has been instrumental to Colorado's rise in the standings over the past two months. He's amassed a 13-4-2 record and a 2.23 goals-against average in 19 starts since Dec. 7.

Near the bottom of the league in points entering December, the Avalanche have gone 17-8-2 since to climb to eighth in the Western Conference.

After turning in two straight solid efforts that included a 27-save shutout of New Jersey on Jan. 14, Pickard allowed four goals on 20 shots in two periods against the Sharks. He's expected to draw another start Wednesday despite dealing with a flu bug that's also affected a few other Avalanche players.

'I don't want to use the word `distraction' but we had three guys sick this morning," coach Patrick Roy said. "It's hard enough to play when you're 100 percent.'

Pickard was pulled in the first period of his lone career meeting with Los Angeles (30-15-3), a 5-2 Colorado home loss on March 10 that extended the Kings' recent success in this series. The 23-year-old allowed three goals on eight shots.

The Kings won their sixth straight over Colorado with a 2-1 victory at Staples Center on Oct. 18, but Varlamov recorded 30 saves and Tyson Barrie had two goals and two assists as the Avalanche won 4-1 in Denver on Jan. 4.

Colorado went 3 of 5 on the power play in that matchup but is 2 of 23 over its last nine games. The Avalanche have 10 goals total in their past six as they face longtime nemesis Jonathan Quick.

Quick is 13-4-1 with a 2.25 GAA in 19 career starts against Colorado and owns a 1.32 GAA in winning his last six. The All-Star has been particularly dominant on home ice, where he's 8-1-1 with a 1.57 GAA in 10 starts and registered 22 saves in the most recent matchup at Staples Center.

Quick does enter this one having allowed three goals each in consecutive losses to Minnesota and Arizona. He hasn't lost three straight since season-opening defeats to San Jose, Arizona and Vancouver.

The Kings avoided their own three-game skid with a comeback Sunday in San Jose. After Vincent Lecavalier tied the game with 12.2 seconds left in regulation, Marian Gaborik scored with 53.8 seconds remaining in overtime to give Los Angeles a 3-2 victory.

'To pull off a win like this, it showed the character of this team and being resilient and getting timely goals,' center Anze Kopitar said. 'We'll certainly take it.'

Gaborik ended a 10-game goal drought while the rejuvenated Lecavalier scored his fourth in six games, matching his total in his final 45 with Philadelphia. The 35-year-old was acquired from the Flyers on Jan. 6.

The Kings' Tyler Toffoli and Colorado's Matt Duchene, both of whom lead their teams with 22 goals, each have two in the season series.
