Preview: Predators (16-13) at Hurricanes (16-17)
      Date: January 02, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

After laboring through much of November, the Carolina Hurricanes changed their trajectory this past month and capped it off by beating the league's hottest team.

They'll try to open this one on a successful note as well by earning a fourth consecutive home victory against the Nashville Predators on Saturday night.

Carolina (16-17-5) bounced back from a 3-6-4 mark in November by going 8-5-1 in December. They finished off 2015 by snapping Washington's nine-game win streak with a 4-2 victory Thursday.

Eric Staal scored the tiebreaking goal, the first of the Hurricanes' three in the third period.

"I like the way we've been playing here the last month. We've got a good vibe going in our room. We've got a good vibe on the ice," the Carolina captain said. "Tonight, we played a team that has been rolling pretty good. It was a great effort. It was a big win and we have to keep going after it."

Carolina will seek its fourth win in five games and season-high third in a row at home against a team seeking to avoid its first five-game road skid in two seasons. The Predators (18-13-7) have been outscored 15-6 while going 0-3-1 in their past four contests away from home and were routed 5-1 in Dallas on Thursday.

Pekka Rinne was charged with all five goals, matching a season high, and coach Peter Laviolette pointed to his team's play in the neutral zone.

"It's the one thing that we harped," Laviolette said. "The neutral zone was going to be a big thing, and we turned the puck over too much."

Rinne stopped 25 shots while outdueling Cam Ward in his first start this season, a 2-1 victory Oct. 8. The Nashville netminder is 5-1-0 with a 1.65 goals-against average in six career matchups but has started in just one of his team's three consecutive losing visits to Carolina, a 2-1 defeat Dec. 2, 2014.

The Predators have won the past two overall matchups with Rinne in net each time, but the Predators goaltender is 1-2-0 with a 3.70 GAA in his last three starts.

Ward and Eddie Lack, meanwhile, have combined to give up 11 goals in the last seven games. Lack stopped 30 shots in beating Washington but has given up nine goals while splitting his last two starts against Nashville.

Ward is 2-0-1 with a 1.62 GAA in his past three home meetings.

"It's going to be another tight match. The (Predators) don't give up much," Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal said. "They've got a great D corps and goalie, and their forwards play solid defensively."

Carolina's Jeff Skinner has five goals and four assists in his last six games against Nashville. The Hurricanes' leading goal scorer (15) ended a six-game drought Thursday.

The Predators' James Neal has eight goals and five assists in 15 lifetime matchups with the Hurricanes, but doesn't have a point in his last three.

Nashville went 6-6-3 in December and is 11-12-5 following its 7-1-2 start.

Preview: Flames (16-18) at Avalanche (18-17)
        Date: January 02, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

The Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche made strides in December, though they are currently on the outside looking in at the playoffs.

They'll both be trying to shake off some recent defeats when they meet Saturday night in Denver.

Both teams tied for fourth last month with nine victories. Colorado (18-17-3) went 9-3-2 to match the best winning percentage in December in franchise history.

"If you told us at the start of the month that that is what we'll do, we'd take it, all players, all coaches," defenseman Erik Johnson said. "That is a really good month and something to build off going into the new year here. We've been playing a lot better as of late, and I think we can continue to keep playing better."

Calgary (17-18-2) had the league's seventh-best December winning percentage by going 9-4-0, though the club ended the month with consecutive regulation defeats.

That has the Flames emphasizing this contest, the only one on the road for them in a nine-game stretch.

"There are certain times in the year when you have to step up and this is one of them," center Joe Colborne said.

Calgary has 36 points and is in better shape of getting in the postseason in a crowded Pacific Division race. Colorado has 39 but is in a tougher position with five Central Division foes above it.

The Avalanche are tied for the league's third-worst home record and play six of their next seven there.

"We're going to have to dominate at home," coach Patrick Roy said. "We're going to have to maybe change a bit of our preparation that making sure that when we come to the rink (we have) a different mind-set. We need to be better at home, there's no doubt about that."

Those woes continued with Thursday's 4-3 overtime defeat to Chicago to open a five-game homestand. Johnson had a goal and an assist to give him six points in his last five games and Matt Duchene added two assists.

The Avalanche are 8 for 17 on the power play in their last five games. They have scored first in 11 straight - three shy of the franchise record.

The Flames were third in the league in December with an average of 3.1 goals behind Johnny Gaudreau, who led all players last month with 12. Gaudreau, however, seeks to avoid going pointless in three straight games for the first time since a four-game stretch Nov. 10-15.

Colorado would like to have defenseman Tyson Barrie back after he sat out Thursday due to the flu. Barrie leads the club's defensemen with 23 points.

Star Flames defenseman Mark Giordano has eight points in his last six games. He scored his 10th goal in Thursday's 4-1 home defeat to Los Angeles.

Calgary has totaled 38 shots in its last two games.

"Those are the games you've got to expect down the stretch," Giordano said. "They're going to clog everything up. They're going to play really well defensively."

Nathan MacKinnon has seven points in five career games against the Flames, with a goal and two assists in a 6-3 win Nov. 3, in the first 2015-16 matchup between these clubs.

          Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- TV ratings for national college football semifinals were down 36% from LY. Guy who decided to put the games on New Year's Eve may be looking for a job soon.

-- Weird seeing a Stanford player wearing #7; how is Elway's number not retired?

-- Gonzaga C Karnowski (back) is out for year; Arizona gets its C Tarczewski back tomorrow for its rivalry game with Arizona State.

-- Montreal 5, Boston 1-- Road team is now 12-4 in NHL's outdoor games.

-- ESPN football scout Todd McShay has five Ohio State Buckeyes in his top 32 players for April's NFL Draft.

-- Arizona State is an underdog tonight, first Pac-12 team to be a bowl underdog since Washington (+5) lost 28-26 to Boise State in 2012 Las Vegas Bowl.

          **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Some of this year's better bowl games.....

          13) Duke 44, Indiana 41 OT-- Hoosiers gained 667 yards but lost; their kicker missed a FG on last play; he thought he made the kick. Duke wins its first bowl in 54 years.

          12) Utah 35, BYU 28-- Rivalry game sold out Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, but in first quarter, Cougars turned ball over on their first five possessions and it was 35-0 Utah very early. I was in Westgate sportsbook sitting next to a guy who had bet on BYU- he was not happy. BYU wound up coming back- they had the ball late in game with a chance to tie the score, but Utah held on. Whittingham is now 8-1 in bowls.

          11) Washington State 20, Miami 14-- Wonder how many times a Mike Leach team has been shut out in a half? Not only that, they hung on to win. Unusual.

          10) LSU 56, Texas Tech 27-- You look at Texas Tech's chart for season; they allowed 300+ rushing yards in five of last eight games- it was evident that Leonard Fournette was going to run amuck in this game. He scored five touchdowns in an easy win.

          9) Virginia Tech 55, Tulsa 52-- Frank Beamer goes out with a bowl win; almost 30 years ago I was at a Virginia Tech-Syracuse game in the Carrier Dome-- Syracuse killed them, 35-0, something like that, an awful game. The job Beamer did to lift the Hokies into national prominence shouldn't be understated.

          8) Nevada 28, Colorado State 23-- Las Vegas Bowl wanted BYU-Utah instead of a Mountain West team, so these two schools from same league wound up playing each other- thats not supposed to happen. At least they hadn't played each other this year.

          7) Baylor 49, North Carolina 38-- Bears lost their top two QBs, so they just ran the ball all day-- 84 times for 645 yards, Baylor ran 102 plays for 756 yards with its #3 QB taking the snap and mostly just handing the ball off.

          6) The three 5-7 teams-- There are too many bowl games; lousy teams shouldn't be in bowls. So of course all three 5-7 teams won their bowl game.

          5) Wisconsin 23, USC 21-- Trojans had won 14 in a row against Big 14 teams, but got upset here. USC desperately needs some continuity in its program; somehow they've kept winning enough games to get to bowls, but they'll be breaking in a new QB next year. Curious to see how Clay Helton builds his coaching staff.

          4) Navy 44, Pitt 28-- QB Keenan Reynolds might've been Navy's best football player since Roger Staubach, its best athlete since David Robinson. He eneded his career with a home win; he has scored more TDs than any I-A player, ever.

          3) Pre-game hype-- Always bet the over on pre-game hype; too much talking since ESPN seemingly has an infinite amount of time dedicated to promoting these games. ESPN actually owns ten bowl games, so they have a vested interest in hyping them.

          2) Houston 38, Florida State 24-- Everett Golson missed his last college game due to a death in the family; he missed a year at Notre Dame because he got tossed out of the school. Disappointing career. Cougars had a great win here, both for themselves and the AAC, which went 2-6 in bowl games this year but won their biggest one.

          1) Alabama 38, Michigan State 0-- Spartans lost two bowls to Bama in last six years by a combined score of 87-7; in between, they went 4-0 in bowls, winning all four by 4 or less points- they were underdog in all six of those games..

Preview: Stars (27-8) at Islanders (18-13)
                        Date: January 03, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

The Dallas Stars own the most points in the NHL, thanks in large part to their success on the road. They're having a much tougher time there lately.

The Stars attempt to avoid their longest road losing streak in over a year Sunday night against the New York Islanders.

Dallas (28-8-4) is tied with Los Angeles and San Jose for the most road points in the league at 28. The Stars, though, have dropped three straight road games (0-1-2) and are 1-2-3 in their last six.

They salvaged a point Saturday, erasing a two-goal deficit in the third period before falling 3-2 in overtime at New Jersey in the opener of this three-game trip through the New York metropolitan area.

"You've got to find ways to win when you are down, find ways to get points," coach Lindy Ruff told the team's official website. "We found a point."

Dallas last dropped four games in a row away from home from Nov. 16-Dec. 4, 2014. The team has surrendered 14 goals while losing its last two road meetings with the Islanders, including a 7-5 defeat Oct. 25, 2014.

Jamie Benn failed score in that matchup, and he enters his first visit to Brooklyn looking to snap an eight-game goal drought on the road.

He's scored only six of his NHL-leading 24 goals in away venues. However, he's tallied 13 of his 28 assists outside Dallas.

Patrick Sharp is on the verge of matching his career-high nine-game point streak from Nov. 29-Dec. 18, 2011, when he was with Chicago. He's totaled five goals and six assists in his last eight games.

Sharp has nine points in his last seven meetings with the Islanders (21-13-5).

New York is in search of a bounce-back effort after surrendering the first five goals in Saturday's 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh. Re-establishing their superb play on the penalty kill could be just what the team needs.

The Islanders' penalty kill ranks third in the league with an 86.0-percent success rate. However, the unit has allowed three goals on eight occasions over the last two games after killing a franchise-record 42 straight penalties.

New York gave up two power-play goals and a short-handed tally against the Penguins.

"You're not going to win too many games when you give up two power-play goals and a short-handed goal," coach Jim Capuano told the team's official website. "At even strength shots were 39-33 for us. Special teams were the difference in the game and something we have to be better at."

The Islanders, 1 for 14 on the power play over the last six games, could also use some consistency from John Tavares. The captain's goal Saturday was his second in three games, matching his output over the previous 12.

Tavares has 10 points in eight career meetings with the Stars but none in the last two.

Frans Nielsen, though, got his only career hat trick in the last home matchup with Dallas.

The Islanders are expected to start Thomas Greiss in net for a fifth straight game while Jaroslav Halak nurses an upper-body injury.

Greiss has split the last four games with a 2.86 goals-against average, but he was pulled midway through the second period Saturday after allowing four goals on 26 shots. Christopher Gibson stopped 16 of 17 shots the rest of the way in his NHL debut.

Greiss has a 1.50 GAA while winning two career starts against Dallas.

"He's the hardest working guy that we have," coach Jack Capuano said. "He's going to be right back in for us."

Preview: Wild (20-10) at Panthers (17-12)
                          Date: January 03, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

After notching a couple more franchise firsts with their latest victory, the Florida Panthers look to record their most successful homestand ever.

The surprise Atlantic Division leaders close out a six-game residency seeking an unprecedented ninth straight win in Sunday's clash with the Minnesota Wild.

A perennial also-ran for most of their 22 seasons of existence, the Panthers (22-12-4) have risen into the NHL's upper tier behind a torrid 14-3-0 stretch. That includes a club-record eight consecutive victories following Saturday's 3-0 win over the New York Rangers that also established a new franchise best of six straight home wins.

The Panthers set the mark hours after announcing a contract extension for coach Gerard Gallant through 2018-19. The move came one day after the team extended general manager Dale Tallon's deal for three years.

'He has done an excellent job of creating a winning culture and developing our young players in his time with the Panthers,' Tallon said of Gallant. 'He is an ideal fit for our group and we look forward to having him lead our team as we work toward our goal of winning the Stanley Cup.'

Florida has reached the postseason only once in the previous 14 seasons and last won a playoff series in 1996. The franchise's previous best homestands of six games or more came in November 1995 - five wins and a tie - and a 6-0-1 span in March 2008.

"The last few games felt like playoff games, and that's the kind you want to play," goaltender Roberto Luongo said. "We want to keep on doing what we're doing."

Luongo has done his part during the unbeaten run, in which the Panthers have yielded a mere 10 goals. The veteran was at his best Saturday, recording a season-high 40 saves to break his own team record with his seventh consecutive win.

The 36-year-old has posted a 1.26 goals-against average and two shutouts during the streak.

Luongo hasn't started games on back-to-back days this season, though Al Montoya has been just as solid when his number's been called. The career backup owns a 5-1-1 record with a 1.79 GAA and .930 save percentage in eight starts and has allowed one goal in each of his last three - all wins.

Montoya also has yielded one goal in each of his four games against Minnesota and won them all. Luongo has lost his last four versus the Wild.

After halting a seven-game losing streak to the Rangers, Florida next faces another longtime nemesis. The Wild are 12-1-2 in the series' past 15 meetings and have won the last three in regulation.

Minnesota (20-10-7) also has received strong goaltending from Devan Dubnyk during a 2-0-1 stretch as he's permitted four goals on 93 shots. On the current four-game road trip, he followed a 33-save effort in Thursday's 3-1 win at St. Louis with 28 in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss at Tampa Bay.

Jared Spurgeon helped the Wild earn a point by scoring the tying goal with 2:39 left in regulation. Minnesota also had a third-period power-play goal from Ryan Suter overturned when Zach Parise, back from a knee injury that sidelined him against St. Louis, was ruled to have interfered with Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy.

"I think probably if we won the shootout, we might be feeling pretty good about ourselves, so we obviously have to find a way to make sure we're ready to start the game better (Sunday)," coach Mike Yeo said.

Dubnyk has registered a 1.46 GAA in winning all four career starts against Florida, including a 2-1 victory in the most recent matchup Feb. 12.

Preview: Jets (18-18) at Ducks (14-15)
                            Date: January 03, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

John Gibson's superb play has the Anaheim Ducks in good spirits for their longest homestand of the season.

They'll begin this important eight-game stretch Sunday night against one of the NHL's poorer road teams, the Winnipeg Jets, as Gibson vies for a third consecutive shutout.

Despite winning three of four and earning a point in five straight, Anaheim (15-15-7) still returns home 13th in the Western Conference with 37 points. The Ducks have an opportunity to gain ground with five conference foes set to visit the Honda Center, where they're 9-5-4 this season and 3-1-0 in their last four.

"We can make a big step here by winning a lot of games at home," coach Bruce Boudreau said.

The defending Pacific Division champions come back optimistic after going 2-0-1 on a road trip in which they yielded only three goals. Gibson set the tone by making 14 saves in Tuesday's 1-0 win at Calgary and followed with 21 in another 1-0 victory over Edmonton on Thursday.

Since being promoted from the AHL on Nov. 24, Gibson has recorded a league-best 1.68 goals-against average and four shutouts in 14 appearances. He's expected to play after Frederik Andersen worked Friday's 2-1 shootout loss at Vancouver.

The Ducks have needed Gibson to be great, they scored just three goals on their trip and have netted a league-low 68 overall.

"Hopefully we can score some more goals and give our goalies some help. They've been playing great," forward Andrew Cogliano said.

The Ducks' slumping offense took another hit when Cam Fowler injured his knee last Sunday against Philadelphia. The defenseman and power-play quarterback will miss at least three additional weeks with a Grade 2 sprain.

Scoring wasn't an issue in Anaheim's matchups with Winnipeg (18-18-2) last season. The Ducks amassed 12 goals in winning all three regular-season meetings and 16 in sweeping the Jets in the West quarterfinals. They've won eight straight against Winnipeg including the playoffs.

Ryan Kesler had three goals and two assists in the playoff series, but the one-time 41-goal scorer posted only his fifth in 37 games this season in Friday's defeat.

The Jets enter on a high note after Saturday's 4-1 win in San Jose ended a six-game road skid. They opened this season-high five-game trek with Thursday's 4-2 loss to Arizona after winning two straight at home.

Drew Stafford had a short-handed goal and Mathieu Perreault scored on the power play to back Connor Hellebuyck's 27 saves and boost a special teams unit that's been among the league's worst. Winnipeg ranks 29th on the power play at 14.4 percent and is 1 for 21 over its last seven on the road, where its dropped 11 of 13 and is 7-13-1 overall.

The Jets have surrendered a power-play goal in eight of 10 games, killing just 71.8 percent of short-handed situations over that span. They were 4 for 5 against the Sharks.

"We talked a lot about discipline and we did a better job of staying out of the box and getting the kills when we needed," Perreault said.

Hellebuyck has started 11 of the last 13 games, meaning the struggling Michael Hutchinson could get the nod Sunday. Hutchinson has posted a 3.79 GAA in losing seven consecutive starts, allowing at least three goals in six.
