            **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

            13) Rams 23, Seahawks 17-- St Louis sweeps Seahawks for first time in 11 years; at 7-8, Rams are finishing strong, but when they go 3-1 vs Arizona/Seattle and miss the playoffs, its an empty feeling. St Louis was +3 in turnovers; last two weeks, teams with +2 or better turnover ratio are 14-0 SU.

            12) Bears 26, Buccaneers 21-- Tampa Bay faded down stretch, losing four of last five games; in those five games, Bucs started 37 drives 80+ yards from goal line, their opponents only 20. Bad special teams, lousy on 3rd down (9 of last 29). Up 14-13 in third quarter with ball in red zone, Winston threw an awful INT, giving up an easy FG. Chicago dominated game from that point on.

            11) Falcons 20, Panthers 13-- First loss of season for Carolina; not sure it is worst thing, takes some pressure off- they can rest banged-up guys next week. Atlanta was eliminated when the Giants got beat in Minnesota last night- they started season 5-0, so missing the playoffs.makes this season a crummy one.

            10) Bills 16, Cowboys 6-- Buffalo hosts the Jets next week, with chance to knock Rex Ryan's old team out of playoffs. Dallas is 1-10 with backup QB starting this year, and they used three of them. Broncos (Week 5) are only team this year to win a game they didn't score an offensive TD in, when other team did- Broncos also won a game in Week 1 when neither team scored an offensive TD.

            9) Saints 38, Jaguars 27-- New Orleans had 10 drives; five TDs, three FGs, not good day for Jaguars, who have now lost four of last five games. If you're the Saints, would you trade your coach for a draft pick and if so, how high a pick would you want? Lot of rumors out there that the Dolphins/Colts are interested in Sean Payton.

            8) Lions 32, 49ers 17-- Detroit won five of last seven games; if they're smart, they get rid of Jim Caldwell anyway, hire a defensive-minded coach who will keep OC Cooter on his staff. 49ers are 2-9 vs spread in its 11 losses, 4-8 vs the spread as an underdog of 6+ points. They must've really not liked Jim Harbaugh to fire him.

            7) Chiefs 17, Browns 13-- Chiefs won last nine games (7-2 against spread) have made playoffs despite starting season 1-5. Cleveland lost nine of last ten games (2-8 against spread) as another dismal season comes to an end. This is good time to point out that all 16 games next weekend will be divisional rivalry games.

            6) Colts 18, Dolphins 12-- Miami lost seven of last nine games (1-8 vs spread); their next coach will be a big name- they had ball in red zone five times in this game, scored only 12 points. Indy is still alive for playoff spot; they host hapless Titans, Houston plays Jacksonville. Still baffled how Ryan Tannehill never gets benched.

            5) Jets 26, Patriots 20 OT-- I'm pretty sure last NFL coach who chose to kick off to start OT was Marty Mornhinweg, who got fired shortly thereafter; if defense keeps Jets out of EZ on first drive, no one says a word. They didn't.

Tom Brady used to date actress Bridget Moynihan- they had a kid together- the young man's name is John Edward Thomas, as in J-E-T. Not a coincidence. Apparently Ms Moynihan holds a grudge-- hope she bet the Jets in this game.

            4) Texans 34, Titans 6-- Houston won six of its last eight games, despite using five QBs this season- they could be tough out in AFC playoffs. Tennessee lost six of its last seven games (0-6-1 vs spread); they're 1-10 vs spread when scoring less than 33 points. How happy will Jerry Jones be when Brandon Weeden starts a playoff game?

            3) Cardinals 38, Packers 8-- Next week's Sunday night game: Vikings-Packers, so for second week in row, a game in frigid conditions gets moved from noon to 7:30pm local time kickoff. Does no one care about fans who buy tickets? Packers' OL was useless in this game. Arizona won last nine games; they were -3 in turnovers in both their losses- they're the best team in the NFL right now.

            2) Ravens 20, Steelers 17-- Steelers now need to win in Cleveland and get help from Buffalo next week to make playoffs. Ravens found a competent backup QB in Mallett, who was cut by Houston when he missed plane to Miami game, after he took a day off when Hoyer was named starter this summer.

            1) Vikings 49, Giants 17-- Tank job by Giants, who were eliminated when Redskins won Saturday night. If you owned the Giants and it was your money being spent, do you bring Tom Coughlin back as coach? It was pretty much assumed in the media last summer that if he missed the playoffs this year it was sayonara.

And if you do fire a coach who won two Super Bowls, who do you bring in who will be better? Do you fire the GM, who hasn't drafted well? Interesting questions.

Jets place F Scheifele on IR

The Winnipeg Jets placed forward Mark Scheifele on injured reserve Sunday with an upper-body injury.

Scheifele, 22, sustained a head injury in practice Saturday. He has 12 goals and 10 assists in 34 games this season.

The Jets also recalled forward Adam Lowry from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

Lowry, 22, has played 31 games with the Jets this season, recording eight points (one goal, seven assists) and 22 penalty minutes. Last season, Lowry played 80 games with the Jets and totaled 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists). He was drafted by Winnipeg in the third round of the 2011 NHL draft.

                      Sabres aware of Kane investigation

The Buffalo Sabres responded to a report in the Buffalo News on Sunday that star left winger Evander Kane is the subject of a sex offense investigation.

"We take the allegation made (Sunday) against Evander Kane very seriously," the Sabres said in a statement. "We are gathering facts and have been in touch with the NHL and Evander's representatives. Until we have more information we will not have any additional comment."

The alleged incident occurred Sunday morning in a downtown hotel room near the First Niagara Center, according to Buffalo News sources.

"We have an investigation ongoing," a Buffalo police source told the News. "We are not naming the suspect, and we do not expect it to be resolved in the very near future."

Kane, who currently has not been charged with a crime, was not at Buffalo's practice on Sunday for a reported personal reason.

The 24-year-old power forward, in his first season with the Sabres after coming over in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets last season, has eight goals and five assists in 25 games this season.

                          • Preview: Stars (26-7) at Blue Jackets (12-22)

                            Date: December 29, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

After a grueling stretch against three teams chasing them in the standings, the Dallas Stars draw a matchup against the NHL's worst.

The Stars can improve on their league-best record while extending their point streak to six games when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.

Dallas (27-7-3) is riding a 4-0-1 stretch with the last four games coming against its closest pursuers in the Central Division, beating Minnesota and Chicago last week before earning three points from a home-and-home set with second-place St. Louis.

The Stars regrouped from Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss with a dominating performance in Sunday's 3-0 win. Captain Jamie Benn scored his NHL-leading 23rd goal and Patrick Sharp extended his point streak to five games with a goal and an assist.

"Tough to give up the point in the shootout loss, but I thought our team bounced back with a great effort at home," Sharp told the team's official website. "Three of four points coming out of the (Christmas) break is good."

Now the Stars are tasked with righting the ship on the road, where they are 1-1-2 since Dec. 4. They still have a Western Conference-best 12-3-3 road record.

The NHL's top-scoring offense at 3.46 goals per game will take its second look this month at a Columbus defense allowing an average of 3.13, second-worst in the league. That mark is up to 4.00 since Dec. 10 with a 2-6-1 record since the Blue Jackets lost top goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to a groin injury.

Dallas ranks toward the top of the league with a 1.67 goals-against average since Dec. 11, allowing no more than three goals in 11 straight games. Two of the Stars' four shutouts have come within the last week as Kari Lehtonen logged Sunday's with 22 saves, and Antti Niemi made 20 in last Tuesday's 4-0 victory over the Blackhawks.

It's unclear who will start Tuesday, though Niemi earned the NHL's second star of the week after going 2-0-1 with a 1.02 GAA and .966 save percentage. But he is 1-4-0 with a 4.03 GAA in his last six games versus the Blue Jackets, while Lehtonen is 7-5-1 with a 1.85 GAA against them for his career.

Lehtonen made 34 saves in the first matchup between the teams Dec. 15, a 5-1 win in Dallas. Tyler Seguin tallied two goals and Johnny Oduya, Mattias Janmark and Alex Goligoski each scored.

The Blue Jackets (13-22-3), who have seven players on their roster at 23 years old or younger, have surrendered at least five goals four times in their last six games - all in regulation.

'It's very frustrating ... I see weakness,' coach John Tortorella said. 'I think we're weak mentally, and it's not the kids. I worry about the kids getting into bad habits by watching other people. That's frightening to me.'

Columbus was outshot 19-1 while taking 11 minutes in penalties during the first period of Sunday's 3-2 loss at Florida. The Blue Jackets have served 71 penalty minutes in the last three games.

Rookie Joonas Korpisalo was pulled after allowing four goals on 27 shots against the Stars earlier this month, and Curtis McElhinney allowed a goal on seven shots in relief. Korpisalo has a 3.65 GAA in five games since being called up from the AHL after the injury to Bobrovsky, who could be on the verge of returning but is listed as day-to-day.

                            • Preview: Hurricanes (15-16) at Devils (15-14)

                              Date: December 29, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Carolina Hurricanes are suddenly playing well defensively and on the road. Struggles in both areas played a role in them being at the bottom of the Eastern Conference earlier this month.

Coming off a major confidence builder, the Hurricanes can continue their climb up the East standings Tuesday night if they beat the New Jersey Devils for the second time in four days.

Following a 5-1 home loss to the Devils on Dec. 3, Carolina was tied for the fewest points in the league with 20. The Hurricanes have since recorded 15 points (7-3-1), and the only East team with more in that span is first-place Washington.

'We're going the right way,' coach Bill Peters said. 'We play more of a puck-possession game. Our D skate better and is very young. That's exciting.'

No win was more thrilling for his young players than they one they got Sunday, knocking off the defending Stanley Cup champions and handing Chicago just its fifth regulation loss in 20 home games. Justin Faulk and Victor Rask scored in support of backup Eddie Lack, who stopped 35 shots and had his shutout bid spoiled with 3 seconds left in a 2-1 victory.

The win was even more impressive considering the Blackhawks were coming off a four-day break while the Hurricanes (15-16-5) had to travel after beating New Jersey 3-1 the night before.

Cam Ward started that game, needing to make only 19 saves, and should be back in net for the rematch. Ward and Lack have helped limit opponents to seven goals over the past five games, prior to which Carolina was allowing a conference-worst 3.06 goals per game.

"Any time you have that going, you get a little bit more comfortable," Faulk said of the goaltending. "You can make a few more plays and not worry about turning it over too much when they're on their game.'

Sunday's victory made the Hurricanes 4-0-1 on the road after winning just four of their first 13. They've converted 8 of 17 power-play chances away from home this month after previously going 2 for 43.

Faulk has a league-high 12 power-play goals and didn't have an even-strength goal before scoring one in each of the past two games. The 23-year-old defenseman has 12 points in the last 10 games, helping Carolina into position to tie for 11th in the 16-team East and get within five points of a playoff spot with a win Tuesday.

The Devils (17-14-5) have fallen out by losing four of five, scoring one goal in each loss. The defeat to Carolina is their only game in the past week.

Kyle Palmieri scored his team-leading 15th goal early in the third period Saturday to tie the score before Faulk and Joakim Nordstrom answered for the Hurricanes.

'It just kind of got away from us in the third,' said Cory Schneider, who had 22 saves.

Schneider had been 4-1-1 with a 1.65 goals-against average in six previous starts against Carolina.

Adam Henrique is second to Palmieri with 13 goals but has none in seven straight games, and Mike Cammalleri is next with 12 goals despite having one in his last nine.

                              • Preview: Senators (15-12) at Bruins (17-12)

                                Date: December 29, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Since failing to solve Craig Anderson over the weekend, the Boston Bruins haven't had much time to prepare for a potential rematch when they face the Ottawa Senators back home.

That challenge could become more difficult if co-leading scorer David Krejci isn't available.

With the red-hot Anderson projected to be in net, the Senators will try to earn a sweep of this home-and-home set Tuesday night and avoid their longest road losing streak in four years.

Anderson has faced 973 shots, easily a league high, but he's held his own under duress by going 11-2-2 when he's faced 35 or more in a game. That was the case again Sunday when he finished with 38 saves in a 3-1 home win over the Bruins (19-12-4), who have averaged 35.8 shots in their last four games.

The 13-year veteran is 3-0-1 with a 1.72 goals-against average in his last four starts. Even though Anderson has stopped 77 of 79 shots in his past two, the Senators (18-12-6) know they've got to do a better job of keeping opponents from peppering the goal.

"Obviously Andy is playing great for us," right wing Mark Stone told the team's official website after scoring two goals Sunday. "Asking him to do that every night is not going to cut it. We realize he's a big part of our team, but at the same time we understand he can't do this every night."

Anderson seems likely to get an opportunity to help Ottawa avoid its first six-game road losing streak since Jan. 16-Feb. 9, 2011. He had dropped four of his previous five starts in Boston with a 4.93 GAA before finishing with 26 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory Jan. 3 in the clubs' last meeting there.

Krejci scored the lone goal against Anderson on Sunday, moving into a tie with Patrice Bergeron for the team lead with 33 points.

The center has a five-game point streak (two goals, five assists) against the Senators, but his status is uncertain after he did not play in the third period with an upper-body injury. Ryan Spooner played between Matt Beleskey and Loui Eriksson in Krejci's place.

Boston also lost defenseman Torey Krug to an undisclosed issue in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Buffalo.

"Krejci is a big part of our team," coach Claude Julien said, "and when you lose a guy like him â?? (and) Krug â?? and not to name the others (who) have been out for a while... We've just got to suck it up, and the guys have to step up and do the job. As simple as that."

Krejci has scored or assisted on three of the Bruins' five goals over the past four games, and they've dropped the last three to match their longest losing streak of the season.

Julien is expected to give the starting nod to Tuukka Rask after he finished with 19 saves Sunday. Rask owns an NHL-best 1.38 GAA this month among goalies with at least seven starts, but he's 1-2-2 with a 2.57 mark in his last five meetings with the Senators.

The Bruins will have to do a better job against Stone, who has three goals in the last two games. He has five points in his last two against Boston.

The Senators have won four of the past five meetings, including the last two at TD Garden.
