Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)

Most popular picks 2-7 in Week 15 season record: 46-44-2

Jets (-3.5) were most popular pick; they played last night- L.

          7) Bengals -4.5 (358)-- Lot of faith in first time starter, QB McCarron- W

          6) Bears +5.5 (383)-- Chicago has played lot of close games this year- L

          5) Broncos +6.5 (411)-- Will Osweiler lose starting job if Denver loses? - L

          4) Cardinals -3.5 (442)-- Lot of trust in dome team; was 37 degrees at kickoff- W.

          3) Giants +4.5 (505)-- It is comical how underrated the Panthers are.- L.

          2) Packers -3 (551)-- Aaron Rodgers returns to Bay Area; he played at Cal.- W

          ----------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

          13) Steelers 34, Broncos 27-- Denver led 27-13 at half, never scored again; in second half, they ran nine drives: 35 plays, 72 yards, zero points. Bad news for Jets, Chiefs as teams scramble for AFC Wild Card position.

          12) Panthers 38, Giants 35-- In 2001, Vince McMahon owned XFL, a minor league football operation that was part football, part-WWE. This game resembled that, with Norman/Beckham swatting each other throughout the first quarter as officials refused to police the action and Troy Aikman bitched about it in the FOX TV booth.

Carolina led this game 35-7, blew the lead, won on a last-second FG, but not before both sides were an embarrassment to their employers, with Norman/Beckham swatting each other during/after most every play. Beckham had three personal foul penalties, scored the tying TD, both of which I'm guessing will lead to more commercials.

          11) Chiefs 34, Ravens 14-- "More games are lost than won."- George Allen. Chiefs had two defensive TDs, one of their two TD drives was 24 yards, as Jimmy Clausen falls to 0-3 this season with losses by 26-0/35-6/34-14 scores. Chiefs haven't lost since the Royals won the World Series- they still have work to do to make the playoffs.

          10) Texans 16, Colts 10-- Houston takes over first place in AFC South behind 5th-string QB Weeden, who was cut by Dallas earlier this season. Texans are 7-7 after 1-4 start, so they'll have positive momentum if they make the playoffs, and a home game in the first round. Colts and Giants are both going to be looking for new coaches soon.

          9) Falcons 23, Jaguars 17-- Atlanta ends six-game skid by going 7-14 on 3rd down; Jags were 0-8. Game swung in last 0:10 of first half; down 14-3, Jax had ball on 1-yard line but pass was picked and run back 86 yards, where Falcons kicked FG on last play of half to go up 17-3. 6 or 10-point swing was the difference.

          8) Vikings 38, Bears 17-- Minnesota-Green Bay could be playing for first round bye in Week 17; Minnesota was +2 in turnovers here. This week, teams that were +2 or better in turnovers are 6-0 so far. When Vikings average 10.5 ypa, they will win, since that is one of weaker parts of their game.

          7) Patriots 33, Titans 16-- Now there are rumors that Bill Polian is going to come to Nashville to run the Titans and bring in Peyton Manning to work with him in the front office. Chicago OC Adam Gase is rumored as a probably head coaching candidate.

          6) Redskins 35, Bills 25-- Washington has leg up on winning NFC East; they threw for 10.6 yards/attempt in this game, as rumors persist that Rex Ryan and front office aren't getting along. Buffalo just played five road games in six weeks, which is unkind scheduling; they get Kellen Moore's Dallas Cowboys in Orchard Park next week.

          5) Packers 30, Raiders 20-- Green Bay scored two TDs in 0:15 to take an early 14-0 lead on a rainy, dismal day in Oakland. Raiders are 2-5 at home and could be playing their last game ever in the Coliseum against the Chargers next week.

          4) Seahawks 30, Browns 13-- Russell Wilson is so valuable because of his mobility; Seattle was 9-12 on third down, ran ball for 182 yards and is a team no one wants to face in mid or late January. As for the Browns, they'll be a curious team to follow in winter/spring months. Not sure they know what they're doing.

          3) Chargers 30, Dolphins 14-- Female blackjack dealer in casino here had a great Dan Fouts throwback jersey on today, the light blue one with big gold lightning bolts on each shoulder. Sad day for San Diego, probably their last game ever in Qualcomm, and that doesn't seem fair. San Diego supported the team, deserves to keep it.

          2) Bengals 24, 49ers 14-- AJ McCarron is first Alabama QB since 1987 to start/win an NFL game (Rutledge); they scored three TDs in 4:23 near end of first half, on three scoring drives totalling 67 yards, with two 49er turnovers involved. 49ers are 0 for 6 on replay challenges this year, while former coach Harbaugh has his Wolverines in a New Year's Day bowl game. Maybe they should've kept him.

          1) Cardinals 40, Eagles 17-- If I was an Eagles fan, I'd seriously question what the hell Chip Kelly is doing; they've gotten worse in Years 2-3 of his regime, but they could create chaos in NFC East by beating Washington Saturday night. Best part of the big Foles-Bradford trade for me is this: Rams get a mid-round draft pick in April. .

                      • Rangers 'Over'-whelmed on defense, topping the NHL betting totals

The New York Rangers have allowed an average of more than five goals per game in their last six, playing Over the total in each of those games.

Team to watch: Florida Panthers (18-12-4)

The Panthers are home for the holidays after a successful road trip earlier this month. Florida went 3-1 on a recent four-game trip, winning the final three games of that leg and added a fourth straight win at home over Vancouver Sunday. The Panthers picked up +4.33 units during this span, backed behind an offense that netted a total of 17 goals in just those four games.

Florida can ride this momentum into 2016, with its next five games being played inside the BB&T Center, including Tuesday’s date with the Ottawa Senators. The Panthers then enjoy the holiday break and don’t hit the ice again until Dec. 27 versus Columbus. Then, Florida hosts a staggering Montreal team and a struggling N.Y. Rangers squad. The moneyline value should stick around for the Panthers into the New Year.

Team in trouble: New Jersey Devils (16-13-15)

The Devils have been an inconsistent club for most of the season but are dragging their skates as 2015 comes to a close, bringing a three-game losing skid into this week. New Jersey had alternated wins and losses for seven games before dropping three straight to Florida, Anaheim and Boston, burning bettors for -3.27 units.

The Devils complete a three-game road trip at Detroit on Tuesday, then pause for the holiday before a home-and-home set with Carolina, then travel to Ottawa immediately following that matchup with the Canes to finish off the calendar year. New Jersey has scored only one goal in each of those three losses and has record more than two goals only four times in the last 10 games.

Total team: New York Rangers (15-16-4 O/U)

The Rangers have been one of the most consistent Under teams in hockey in recent years but their current funk has been brought on by a porous defense, which has allowed an average of more than five goals per game in their last six. New York, not surprisingly, has gone Over the total in each of those games.

The Blueshirts have put it all on goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who is facing 31 shots a night and has allowed 20 goals in his last five starts. The Rangers have countered this weak blueline with 20 totals goals of their own in those six games (an average of 3.3 per night), tipping the final score Over the total. New York could get back Under the number before the New Year, however, facing Anaheim, Tampa Bay and Nashville, who have a combined O/U record of 31-50 on the season.

Injury to note: Bobby Ryan, LW Ottawa Senators

Ryan left Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay with a finger injury, a previous ailment that has plagued him this month. Ryan is currently listed as out indefinitely, taking the Sens’ second-leading scorer off the ice. Ryan is tied with teammate Mike Hoffman with 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists, 5 plus/minus). Ottawa will miss his production, scoring two or fewer goals in five of its last eight games.

Schedule to note: Anaheim Ducks (12-14-4)

The Ducks are on the opposite coast, wrapping up a four-game road trip in New York this week. Anaheim takes on the Islanders in Brooklyn on Monday then travels to Manhattan for a date with the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. That game with the Blueshirts will be the Ducks' third in four nights.

While that spot is tough, Anaheim must also keep its players focused on the final two games before the holiday break. With their close family and friends back home in California and players' extended families spread out over the continent, the Ducks could be busy trying to make holiday plans in the days before Christmas. Anaheim is just 4-9-1 on the road this season.

                          • NHL TUESDAY'S MATCHUPS:

Preview: Blues (19-10) at Bruins (17-9)

                            Date: December 22, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Boston Bruins are knocking at the door.

Riding their hottest stretch of the season and looking to take advantage of another team's slump, the Bruins can take over first place in the Atlantic Division on Tuesday night when they host the St. Louis Blues.

A month ago that might have seemed impossible. Boston (19-9-4) opened the season 8-8-1 and fell far behind the hot Montreal Canadiens. Since, the Bruins are 11-1-3 and have taken advantage of a prolonged Montreal slump.

Boston clawed within one point of the division lead with Sunday's 2-1 shootout win over New Jersey, and the Bruins can leapfrog Montreal with a fourth straight victory Tuesday.

Loui Eriksson scored for the second straight game against the Devils and Ryan Spooner's shootout goal clinched Boston's fifth win in six games.

"You know, it's easy to be feeling comfortable," Zdeno Chara told the team's official website. "It's easy to be feeling complacent at this point, but that would be the biggest mistake we can make. We've just got to look at it as one game at a time, no matter what's happening. We're getting results, that's nice to see, but it's our job to be winning and doing the job."

Positive results have been tough to come by for the Bruins in this series, however. One glance at St. Louis' record against Boston over the last 15 years reveals the Blues' dominance.

How they achieved it is a different story.

The Blues are 12-4-0 against the Bruins since 2001, but nine of those games went into overtime - all St. Louis wins. Of the nine overtime victories since Feb. 24, 2001, five were decided in the extra period while the other four came via shootout.

Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask has rebounded from a troubling start and is 8-0-2 with a 1.42 goals-against average since Nov. 21. He has three shutouts and a .953 save percentage in that span.

Rask's turnaround comes after posting a 3.18 GAA and .890 save percentage in his opening 13 starts, five of which he surrendered five or more goals. He is 2-0-3 with a 1.76 GAA lifetime against St. Louis.

St. Louis (20-11-4) had its three-game winning streak snapped with Monday's disheartening 4-3 loss at Philadelphia. The Blues were up 3-0 midway through the second period but wilted down the stretch.

'There were a lot of poor puck decisions in the second period," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "They dialed it up in the second period and we started turning it over. We didn't manage it very well at all."

However, the Blues did continue their hot stretch on the power play, converting one of two opportunities. St. Louis has scored on seven of 13 power plays in the last seven games to follow an 0-for-10 drought in the previous four.

Brian Elliott will start in net for the Blues, hoping to build on his first win in over a month on Saturday. The 3-2 victory over Calgary was his first in nine appearances after opening the season 4-0. He is 3-6-3 with a 2.90 GAA and .897 save percentage in 12 career starts against Boston.

The Bruins will be without Max Talbot after the NHL gave the forward a two-game suspension Monday for interference against New Jersey's Jiri Tlusty on Sunday, saying Talbot "delivered a late, violent hit."

                            • Preview: Ducks (11-14) at Rangers (18-12)

                              Date: December 22, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Strong defensive play and stingy goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist were keys to the New York Rangers winning the Presidents' Trophy last season.

That's reason enough for coach Alain Vigneault to believe there's a solution to their current slump.

While Lundqvist is likely to get a chance to shake out of his own funk, the Rangers attempt to avoid their longest slide in two years Tuesday night against the Anaheim Ducks.

New York (19-12-4) was among the best defensive teams in the league last season, yielding 2.28 goals per game. The Rangers were even better through the first 21 games of 2015-16, averaging 1.76 goals against while going 16-3-2.

They're not even close to that during a 3-9-2 stretch, surrendering an average of 3.71 goals. New York has been outscored 17-7 while losing three straight and gave up the final six goals in Sunday's 7-3 loss to Washington.

The Rangers last dropped four straight from Dec. 7-12, 2013.

"I'm not sure it's as much mental as much as it is execution. It's probably a combination of both," Vigneault said. "There's no doubt in my mind that the answer is in that dressing room.

"I know that this group knows how to defend and can defend. They've proved it in the past. We're obviously not doing it at this point in time. We gotta regroup, stick with one another and get back at it on Tuesday."

Lundqvist is having his own problems, going 1-3-0 with a 4.86 goals-against average over his last five games. The 2012 Vezina Trophy winner has been pulled twice over that stretch, including Sunday when he gave up five goals on 24 shots through two periods.

"I have to look at my own game," Lundqvist said. "I have to be better. I know that."

Lundqvist and the Rangers had little trouble with the Ducks last season. Lundqvist made 24 saves in a 4-1 win at Anaheim on Jan. 7 before New York scored four unanswered goals to win 7-2 at home March 22.

Like New York, the Ducks (12-15-5) were among the NHL's best teams last season, finishing atop the Western Conference. However, they're at the bottom of the league this season and rank last with 1.84 goals per game.

"You feel like you're not going to score," captain Ryan Getzlaf said. "We have to be mentally stronger."

Anaheim lost for the fourth time in five road games Monday, falling 5-2 to the New York Islanders. The Ducks failed to score on their only power-play opportunity and are 0 for 14 over the last seven games.

The finale of this four-game trip includes Carl Hagelin's return to Madison Square Garden, where he spent the last four seasons with the Rangers before being traded to Anaheim over the summer.

Hagelin had 130 points in 266 games over that stretch, helping the Rangers reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2014. He has just eight points in 32 games with the Ducks after scoring his third goal Monday.

Corey Perry is Anaheim's top scorer with 10 goals and 20 points. However, he's only managed one assist over the last four games. He has five goals and six points in six career visits to MSG, scoring twice in the March loss.

The Rangers' Mats Zuccarello had one goal and two assists against the Ducks last season. He leads New York with 14 goals and 28 points, but he has just one assist and is a minus-8 over the last three games.

                              • Preview: Senators (14-12) at Panthers (14-12)

                                Date: December 22, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Spending 2 1/2 weeks at home could take even more stress off a Florida Panthers team that already is enjoying its best stretch of the season.

The Ottawa Senators haven't had much to be happy about on the road since the last time they visited the Panthers.

Florida looks to win a fifth straight game by dealing Ottawa a fifth consecutive road loss Tuesday night.

The Panthers (18-12-4) have won 10 of 13 since Nov. 27 and began their current winning streak by taking the last three of a four-game road trip. Jaromir Jagr then moved into fourth place on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list with his 732nd in Sunday's 5-4 shootout win over Vancouver.

'That goal is sweet but the win is even sweeter,' Jagr said. 'It is special. I've played with a lot of great players; that makes it a lot easier for me. I started with great players in Pittsburgh and I'm going to finish here with great players.'

Aaron Ekblad, Shawn Thornton and Vincent Trocheck also scored for the Panthers, who began a six-game homestand that will take them through Jan. 5.

Roberto Luongo made 30 saves against his former team and is 7-3-0 with a 1.88 goals-against average during Florida's hot stretch.

"It's been a real good run," coach Gerard Gallant said. "We have one more huge game coming up here Tuesday before the break. ... We battled back, the last 20 games have been really good for our club."

The Panthers have won three of their last four at home, with the lone setback a 4-2 loss to Ottawa (17-12-5) on Dec. 8. Zack Smith scored in that contest for the Senators, who have been outscored 14-5 on the road since that win.

They've dropped four of six overall after falling 5-2 at Tampa Bay on Sunday. That marked their sixth loss in seven road games after starting 7-2-1 away from home.

'It's a little different for us,' Smith said. 'We're usually pretty strong on the road. Too many mistakes, too many turnovers.'

Injuries didn't help either. Forward Bobby Ryan left early with a hand injury, and defenseman Cody Ceci played only five shifts in the first period before leaving with an upper-body issue.

Ottawa also played most of the game without defenseman Mark Borowiecki, who received a game misconduct less than two minutes in for an interference major.

Erik Karlsson scored but played nearly 37 minutes with Ceci and Borowiecki out. The Senators failed on all five power-play chances and are 1 for 20 with the man advantage over their last six.

"Just tough one to swallow. When you get down short bodies as early as we did, especially on defense, makes it a tougher game to play," said Andrew Hammond, who stopped 30 shots. "We had a lot of guys playing more minutes than they are used to and it just makes it really hard to sustain for 60 minutes."

Former Panther Craig Anderson is expected to be in net for this contest. He's 7-2-0 with a 1.56 GAA in his last nine starts at Florida after making 25 saves to win the last meeting.

Luongo stopped 19 shots in that contest and has lost three straight starts against the Senators after winning his previous 10.
