    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 12 season record: 34-31-2

    6) Giants -3 (385)-- Washington won its last four home games.

    5) Patriots -3 (407)-- Lot of opinions on this game, both ways.

    4) Browns -2.5 (409)-- Not a lot of faith in Matt Schaub as Ravens' QB.

    3) Broncos +3 (415)-- I'm guessing this game will get huge TV ratings.

    2) Steelers +3.5 (531)-- Roethlisberger's first-ever game in Seattle.

    1) Buccaneers +3.5 (567)-- Not lot of faith in 40-year Colt QB Hasselbeck.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) Ohio State 42, Michigan 13-- Buckeyes ran ball down Michigan's throats for 369 yards; no one complained about the play-calling.

Interesting that Ohio State put its co-offensive coordinators up in booth today, instead of one upstairs and one on the field-- maybe Ezekiel Elliott was right last week-- there were changes made and they had positive results.

    12) Stanford 38, Notre Dame 36-- Cardinal lost 38-36 at home to Oregon two weeks ago, returns favor here vs Notre Dame, knocking them out of playoff talk. Looks like there might not be much drama next week-- Big 14 winner will be the fourth team, to go to playoff with Clemson-Alabama-Oklahoma.

Unless Alabama loses to Florida, then Ohio State could weasel its way back into the picture, which would cause chaos.

    11) Alabama 29, Auburn 13-- I laugh when people talk some about some other series being the biggest rivalry in college sports. Someone poisoned a freakin' tree in Auburn because of this rivalry-- who poisons a tree because of football?!?!?!? I didn't even know it was possible to poison a tree-- you have to be a sick bastard to do that.

    10) Southern Mississippi 58, Louisiana Tech 24-- Golden Eagles were 4-32 the last three years; now they're in the C-USA championship game- solid work done by coach Tood Monken. Hopefully he won't bolt for greener pa$ture$.

    9) Oklahoma 58, Oklahoma State 23-- Big X games are like Arenaball, in that any defensive stop is like breaking serve in tennis-- doesn't happen much. This game was 44-20 at the half as OSU's season crumbles with two bad losses after a 10-0 start.

    8) Indiana 54, Purdue 36-- Hoosiers are 6-6, going bowling for first time since 2007; they've lost games when scoring 52-41 points ths year and gave Michigan/Ohio State fits this year in tough losses. Their bowl game will be fun to watch.

    7) Memphis 63, SMU 0-- Tiger QB Paxton Lynch had seven TD passes-- at the half. Memphis won a game today but lost its coach-- Justin Fuente is off to Virginia Tech to replace Frank Beamer. Its too bad a team like Memphis having a breakthrough 9-3 season can't totally enjoy it because the coach leaves, but it is a business.

    6) Cincinnati 19, East Carolina 16-- Credit to Bearcats' players/coaches; they were down 51-3 at the half last week, in a game they were favored to win, but they sucked it up and came back this week and won a tough road game. Good for them.

    5) Louisville 38, Kentucky 24-- Wildcats led this game 21-0, were up 24-7 at half; the good news for Kentucky fans-- basketball team hasn't lost yet.Football team lost six of last seven games after a 4-1 start for second year in row.

    4) USC 40, UCLA 21-- Jim Mora is now 3-1 vs USC; weird thing is that in those four games, Trojans had a different head coach in all four. Freshman QB Rosen is very good for UCLA but he got rattled by blitzing today and starting throwing off his back foot,

    3) Michigan State 55, Penn State 16-- Hopefully Texans coach Bill O'Brien will write a book when he retires and explain why he left Penn State, because the current coach James Franklin isn't as good a coach as he is-- O'Brien's departure hurt Penn State a lot. Michigan State-Iowa is your Big 14 championship game next week.

    2) Florida State 27, Florida 2-- Florida State has to be a little relieved that LSU got wise and didn't fire Les Miles, because Jimbo Fisher was probably their first target, and LSU has more re$ource$ than Florida State. As for Florida, they can cause chaos next week if they beat Alabama in the SEC championship game, but they've won a lot of games this year for a team with a terrible offense.

    1) LSU 19, Texas A&M 7-- Players carried Les Miles off the field after the game, fans chanted his name and the school apparently recanted on firing him and will keep him. Miles is 111-32, won a national title and you're firing him? Why? The next coach could easily fare a lot worse- someone saw the light and kept a successful coach.

Side note: Auburn fired Gene Chizik two years after he won a national title when he had Cam Newton at QB. Maybe boosters in the SEC are just insane rich people.

NHL roundup: Devils come back to beat Habs in OT

MONTREAL -- John Moore scored at 2:31 of overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.

Cory Schneider, making his first start at Bell Centre, stopped 30 shots for New Jersey and Mike Condon made 28 saves for the Canadiens.

Patrik Elias and Kyle Palmieri scored third-period goals for the Devils, with Palmieri's coming with 22 seconds left in regulation. Alex Galchenyuk scored both Montreal goals.

        Kings 3, Blackhawks 2 (OT)

LOS ANGELES -- Marian Gaborik scored two goals, including the winner, as Los Angeles defeated Chicago lackhawks 3-2 in overtime.

Gaborik took a long lead pass from Anze Kopitar and sped in alone to beat Scott Darling with a wrist shot at 2:04 of overtime. Jonathan Quick stopped 20 shots for the win. Gaborik also scored at 14:05 of the third period to send the game to overtime.

Chicago's Patrick Kane set an NHL record with his 14th goal of the season on the power play at 11:10 of the first period to give Chicago a 1-0 lead. He became the first American-born NHL to earn a point in 19 consecutive games, eclipsing the mark set by Eddie Olczyk (Toronto Maple Leafs, 1989-90) and Phil Kessel (Boston Bruins, 2008-09).

        Avalanche 5, Jets 3

DENVER -- Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and an assist each, and Colorado held on to beat Winnipeg.

Semyon Varlamov rebounded from a tough game Wednesday to stop 25 shots as the Avalanche won for just the third time in 10 home games. Carl Soderberg, Blake Comeau and Chris Wagner also had goals.

        Sharks 5, Flames 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Five different skaters scored goals and Martin Jones made 25 saves as San Jose overwhelmed Calgary.

The Flames denied Jones' fourth shutout of the season at 9:42 of the third period when Markus Granlund scored his first goal of the season with a wrist shot.

        Coyotes 4, Senators 3

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona's Mikkel Boedker had three goals for his second hat trick against Ottawa in as many games this season.

Boekder scored in the first minute in each of the first two periods and put in a rebound with 6:31 remaining for a 4-2 lead.

Boedker had three goals in a 4-1 win in Ottawa in the other meeting between the two on Oct. 23. He has nine goals this season for the Coyotes, who have won three in a row.

        Islanders 3, Lightning 2

TAMPA, Fla. -- John Tavares scored the winning goal on a power play with 3:36 remaining for New York.

Tavares' 11th goal of the season came after Lightning winger Erik Condra was sent off on a hooking call. With the Islanders putting a lot of traffic in front of Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop, Tavares poked a rebound off a shot from center Frans Nielsen past Bishop.

The Islanders trailed 2-0 early in the second period after Lightning forward Alex Killorn and defenseman Anton Stralman scored.

        Flyers 3, Rangers 0

NEW YORK -- Wayne Simmonds scored twice and goaltender Steve Mason stopped 24 shots as the Flyers earned their second straight victory.

The Flyers won at Madison Square Garden in the regular season for the first time since March 6, 2011 -- a span of 10 games.

The Rangers (16-6-2), meanwhile, have lost three straight in regulation for the first time this season after winning 11 of 12.

        Capitals 4, Maple Leafs 2

TORONTO -- Left winger Jason Chimera scored a goal and added an assist Washington won for the fifth game in a row.

Right winger Tom Wilson, left winger Marcus Johansson and right winger Justin Williams also scored for Washington. Center Peter Holland and center Leo Komarov scored for Toronto.

Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier stopped 19 shots. Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby made 31 saves.

        Oilers 3, Penguins 2 (SO)

PITTSBURGH -- Centers Matt Hendricks and Jordan Eberle scored in a shootout for Edmonton.

Center Leon Draisaitl, on a play set up by left winger Taylor Hall's hard work, and left winger Lauri Korpikoski gave the Oilers a 2-0 lead.

Center Evgeni Malkin forged a 2-2 tie for Pittsburgh, including a highlight-video goal.

        Blues 3, Blue Jackets 1

ST. LOUIS -- Right wing Scottie Upshall broke a 1-1 tie with a third-period goal to lead St. Louis over Columbus.

Upshall scored his fourth goal of the season on a wrist shot from the slot 6:02 into the period, beating goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, to hand the Blue Jackets only their second loss in their last five games and snap the Blues' three-game losing streak against Columbus.

Left wing Alexander Steen added an empty-net goal in the final minute, his ninth goal of the year.

        Stars 4, Wild 3 (OT)

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Center Tyler Seguin scored in overtime and Dallas completed an impressive comeback.

Dallas trailed 3-0 with just over 15 minutes to play in regulation but got goals from defensemen Alex Goligoski and John Klingberg and a short-handed goal from left winger Jamie Benn in less than 10 minutes to draw even.

Goaltender Antti Niemi finished with 23 saves for the Stars (19-5-0), who had lost their previous five games in Minnesota.

The Wild got a 40-save performance from goaltender Darcy Kuemper, who was making just his third start of the season and his first in more than a month.

        Sabres 4, Predators 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Recording the first two-goal game of his career, Sam Reinhart helped Buffalo knock off Nashville.

Reinhart put his team ahead to stay late in the second period with the second goal of a five-minute power play, then added insurance 58 seconds into the third period as his point-blank attempt slipped behind goalie Juuse Saros and barely trickled over the goal line.

It was the second win after a six-game losing streak for the Sabres (10-12-2), who got 28 saves from goalie Chad Johnson (6-7-1). Center Ryan O'Reilly finished the scoring with an empty-net tally at 17:47.
