    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

NFL trends to ponder with Week 9 upon us..........

-- Buffalo is 3-8 in last 11 games as a home favorite; Ryan is 0-5 in his last five.

-- Washington is 5-12 in last seventeen games as a road underdog.

-- Green Bay won six of last eight games with Carolina, 5-2 in last seven visits to Charlotte; average total in last five series games is 54.6.

-- Broncos are 14-9 in last 23 games as a road favorite.

-- 49ers didn't score TD in their last two games, gaining 331 yards total, converting 4-28 on 3rd down

-- NFC South teams are 13-7 vs spread in non-divisional games.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

    13) BYU 17, San Jose State 16-- Spartans scored a TD with 0:45 left, went for two points and the win, but missed. If I'm coaching San Jose, I play for OT, just for the extra TV exposure- there is nothing else on TV at midnight on the west coast.

    12) This is how tenuous winning in the NFL is:
    Tom Brady's career won-loss record: 188-55.
Bill Belichick's head coaching record: 240-118.

    Belichick's record without Brady: 52-63

The smartest coaches are the guys with the best players.

    11) I'd love to know how much Billy Donovan, Fred Hoiberg and Brad Stevens like coaching in the NBA, as opposed to college ball. Doubt we'll ever find out.

    10) Indiana Pacers wore Hickory High uniforms last night, straight from the movie Hoosiers. Paul George played the role of Jimmy Chitwood, scoring 36 points, but he wears number 13, which benchwarmer Ollie wore in the famous movie.

    9) Augustana 76, Iowa 74-- Augustana is a D-II school, but a very good one; Iowa plays in the Big 14. Not a positive sign for the Hawkeyes.

    8) Dodgers turned down Chase Utley's $11M option for next year; would be funny (to me, at least) if the Mets signed him up to fill their upcoming gap at 2B.

    7) I can't stand the NBA rule where teams can use a timeout to advance the ball from the backcourt to the frontcourt-- it creates artificial excitement, but it also takes away chances for teams that are behind to trap in the backcourt after made baskets.

    6) If you care about such things, Rice Owls have played 31 freshmen this season, more than anyone else in America.

    5) Denver is a 5.5-point favorite at Indianapolis Sunday; if you bet this game back when schedule came out and early lines were posted, Colts were a 3-point favorite.

    4) Giants have allowed 315.4 passing yards/game, most in the NFL so far.

    3) So far this season, NBA teams are 21-11 vs spread if they played the night before; NHL teams are 32-36 if they played the night before.

    2) Temple 60, SMU 40-- Really bad beat if you took SMU and the points; game was 45-40 with 2:00 left, the Owls scored on a 36-yard pass, went for two and got it, then scored on a pick-6 with 0:55 for the cover. Much closer game than final score shows.

    1) I hope kids realize how much work Stephen Curry has put in to become as good a shooter as he is now. Thousands and thousands of jumpshots. Lot of time.
