    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Good card of NBA games last night; here are some of the highlights..........

-- Wizards 102, Spurs 99-- Parker tied game with a 3 with 0:07 left; Beal won it with his own 3 with 0:00.3 left. Spurs were down 19-2 early on. Good ballgame.

-- Raptors 103, Thunder 98-- Toronto took 39 FTs on road, Thunder took 14.

-- Rockets 119, Magic 114 OT-- Grab Evan Fournier for your fantasy team; he had 29 points for Orlando.

-- Bucks 91, 76ers 87-- Okafor was -4 in 35:00; every other Sixer starter was plus.

-- Cavaliers 96, Knicks 86-- Thompson had 10 points, 15 boards off the bench.

-- Warriors 112, Clippers 108-- NBA at its very best; seemed like a playoff game.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) The glow of victory doesn't last too long in baseball: Alex Gordon turned down $13.75M for next year, is now a free agent, while Royals paid Alex Rios $1.5M to go away and paid Jeremy Guthrie $3.2M to disappear. Thanks for that title, though.

    12) Pitching coach Mike Maddux leaves Texas to be Dusty Baker's pitching coach in Washington, which means I'm now spared from hearing the A's TV guys make fun of Maddux for always putting his hand on the pitcher's shoulder when he visits the mound. Much better to be a pitching coach in the league with no DH.

    11) Underrated stat: Carolina Panthers won their last 11 regular season games.

    10) Many years ago, maybe the mid- 90's, I rode up an elevator in Madison Square Garden with the refs who were working the Knicks' game that night. I am 6-3 and all three guys were bigger than me-- we forget how tall NBA officials are. I'm wondering if there are college refs who couldn't go to the NBA because they're not tall enough.

    9) It is funny to me how close fans are to the action at NBA games; lot of those fans by the benches can actually talk to the coaches who walk in front of them during the action. It is probably surprising there has never been an incident between players/fans in that scenario. Don't think the big fight in Detroit way back when was by the bench.

    8) Pistons rookie Spencer Dinwiddie was eating a candy bar on the bench Tuesday night. During the game. While in uniform. Someone needs to tell him these games are on TV and very little happens that the cameras don't capture. Oy.

    7) North Carolina's star guard Marcus Paige broke a finger on his non-shooting (right) hand, will miss 3-4 weeks. College hoops starts a week from Friday.

    6) There have been 30 missed PATs in NFL thru eight weeks; in the last four years combined, there were 26 PATs missed, so moving the kick back has worked.

    5) Washington Huskies play Texas over in China next week; they play three games in the Bahamas later this month, but do not play a true road game until January 9, when they visit Pullman to play Washington State.

    4) Edmonton Oilers lost star rookie Connor McDavid for a long time with a broken collarbone. Kid had 12 points in his first 13 NHL games.

    3) Jared Cunningham plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers; he has a sneaker collection with 1,600+ pairs; where the bleep do you put 3,200+ sneakers?

    2) Remember Michael Graham, the Georgetown Hoya who was the enforcer on the Patrick Ewing-era teams? Apparently he won $1M in the DC Lottery-- he is on a TV commercial for the lottery that plays during Wizards games.

    1) St Thomas Aquinas 90, St John's 58-- This was one of those exhibition games, but Aquinas is a D-II school; St John's plays in the freakin' Big East. Could be a very long winter for rookie head coach Chris Mullin, who is building from scratch.

NHL roundup: Ducks earn shootout win

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Right winger Corey Perry scored his first goal of the season with five seconds to play, and the Anaheim Ducks earned a 3-2 shootout win over the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night in front of 15,169 at the Honda Center.

Perry scored on a power play 35 seconds after Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell received a penalty for high sticking. Center Ryan Kesler's slap shot from the top of the slot was deflected to Perry, who converted from near the left-wing post.

After he scored, Perry fell to his knees with his arms raised, then fell backward in relief as his teammates mobbed him.

Goalie Frederik Andersen prevented Florida from winning in overtime when he used his left pad to stop a wrist shot from right winger Reilly Smith on a 2-on-0 breakaway with about 2 minutes, 52 seconds left in the extra period.

During the shootout, Anaheim forwards Jakob Silfverberg and Chris Stewart converted against Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo, who finished with 37 saves. Brandon Pirri scored on the Panthers' first attempt but after Vincent Trocheck shot wide, Andersen stopped Nick Bjugstad and Jonathan Huberdeau.

            Penguins 3, Canucks 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- David Perron scored his first goal of the season, and Phil Kessel collected two assists as Pittsburgh defeated Vancouver.

Sidney Crosby scored his second goal of the season on a power play for the Penguins, who won their fifth consecutive game. Eric Fehr added a short-handed goal for Pittsburgh.

The Penguins, who started the season 0-3-0, won for the eighth time in the past nine games. They built a 3-0 lead before Vancouver mounted a third-period rally that fell short.

Daniel Sedin and Jannik Hansen scored for the Canucks, who saw a two-game win streak end.

            Blues 6, Blackhawks 5

CHICAGO -- Vladimir Tarasenko scored in overtime, lifting St. Louis to a win over Chicago.

Tarasenko's wrist shot with 1:06 remaining in the extra session capped a four-goal comeback by the Blues. Alexander Steen scored twice, and Robby Fabbri, Jay Bouwmeester and David Backes each netted one goal for St. Louis.

The Blackhawks tallied five goals in the first period but could not hold on to a 5-2 lead. Marko Dano, Andrew Shaw, Teuvo Teravainen, Brent Seabrook and Patrick Kane each scored for Chicago.

St. Louis goaltender Jake Allen stopped 27 of 28 shots after relieving starter Brian Elliott early in the game. Elliott allowed four goals on 15 shots before he was replaced with 2:16 remaining in the first period.

            Jets 4, Maple Leafs 2

TORONTO -- Alexander Burmistrov scored late in the third period, giving Winnipeg a victory over Toronto.

The Jets added a short-handed goal at 19:34 of the third by Bryan Little. Dustin Byfuglien and Mark Scheifele also scored for Winnipeg.

Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau and Leo Komarov scored for the Maple Leafs.

Ondrej Pavelec made 24 stops in the Winnipeg goal. Toronto goaltender James Reimer made 29 saves.

                  Thursday, November 5

Halak puts up strong numbers versus old team

New York Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak has posted impressive numbers against the Montreal Canadiens, his former team. In five career starts since being moved from the Habs, the Slovak puck stopper has gone 4-1 with a 2.01 goals against average and .925 save percentage.

Halak's loss did come last season, however, when he allowed six goals on 33 shots in a 6-4 defeat.

The Isles are presently +118 underdogs when the visit the Habs Thursday evening.

Lightning failing to score, Unders cashing

Prior to the puck dropping on the 2015-16 NHL season, the Tampa Bay Lightning were one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Fourteen games into the season, however, and many are wondering what is going wrong with the Bolts.

Tampa Bay is 6-6-2 with 14 points - good for seventh in the Eastern Conference - but heads into Thursday's meeting with the Buffalo Sabres with just one win its last six games, including a 2-1 loss at the Detroit Red Wings its last time out.

The main reason is simple: a lack of goals. The Bolts have tallied just seven goals in those six games, with four of those coming in a 4-3 win at the Carolina Hurricanes on Nov. 1. The Under has been profitable with the Lightning failing to light the lamp, going 6-1 in those games.

The Lightning will be happy to see the Buffalo Sabres at the other end of the ice Thursday. Tampa has beaten the Sabres twice so far this season and is presently -160 for Thursday's meeting in Buffalo.

Bruins cashing tickets in road games

It hasn't been the most spectacular start to the NHL season for the Boston Bruins, but they have been on fire away from home so far this season.

The Bruins visit the Washington Capitals Thursday evening and will look to improve and already-stellar 5-0 record away from home. To put that in a bit more perspective, the Bruins have 13 points so far on the season, so 10 of those have come on the road.

If you had wagered $100 on each of the Bruins' five road games, you'd be up a $630.30.

The B's are currently +134 at the Capitals, but you can click here to keep eye on the moneyline - and more - on our NHL live odds page.
