      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's NHL Playoffs betting cheat sheet
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals vs. New York Islanders (-125, 5)
      Capitals lead series 3-2

The Washington Capitals can punch their ticket into the second round of the playoffs and put the final nail in the coffin for the New York Islanders at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum when the Metropolitan Division rivals play Game 6 on Saturday afternoon. Evgeny Kuznetsov collected two goals and an assist as Washington posted a 5-1 triumph over New York on Thursday to seize a 3-2 edge in the series.

The Islanders could be playing their last game at the Coliseum, as the team is slated to move to Barclays Center in Brooklyn (N.Y.) next season. "It's obvious that there's a lot of emotion in the building," New York coach Jack Capuano said after Friday's practice. "At some point, it was going to come to this ... We want to play our best in front of this crowd." The Islanders posted a 25-14-2 record at home this season, equaling their most such victories since 1984-85.

      TRENDS:

*Islanders are 6-13 in their last 19 overall.
*Home team is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.
*Capitals are 7-3 in their last 10 road games.
*Islanders are 3-9 in their last 12 home games.

Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning (-182, 5)
      Series tied 2-2

Fueled by the momentum of a stirring comeback, the Tampa Bay Lightning look to seize control of their Eastern Conference first-round series with the Detroit Red Wings when the Atlantic Division rivals reconvene at Amalie Arena for Game 5 on Saturday. Petr Mrazek saw his shutout streak of more than 119 minutes come to an end late in the third period, and the Lightning overcame a two-goal deficit to post a stunning 3-2 overtime victory on Thursday.

After scoring twice in Game 2, Tyler Johnson netted his second goal of the contest 2:25 into overtime and Ondrej Palat also tallied late to tie the series at two victories apiece. "It's always nice when you're 2-2 instead of 3-1. That’s a big shift there," Johnson said. "I think especially going back in front of our crowd now, it’s a best of three, we have home ice again." Tampa Bay owned the best home record during the regular season (32-8-1), although Detroit claimed a 3-2 road victory in Game 1.

      TRENDS:

*Lightning are 5-2 in their last 7 overall.
*Under is 3-1-1 in Red Wings last 5 overall.
*Under is 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings.
*Home team is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.

Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks (-168, 5)
      Blackhawks lead 3-2

After failing on their initial attempt, the Calgary Flames take a second shot at winning their first playoff series in 11 years when they host the Vancouver Canucks in Game 6 of their Western Conference first-round matchup on Saturday. Calgary, which hasn't advanced past the opening round since making a trip to the Stanley Cup final in 2004, split the first two games of the series in Vancouver before capturing the next two contests at Scotiabank Saddledome to grab a 3-1 lead.

With a chance to set up a second-round showdown with Pacific Division-rival Anaheim, the Flames were unable to seal the deal Thursday, dropping a 2-1 decision at Rogers Arena despite scoring first. David Jones gave Calgary an early lead as he scored his second goal of the series 2:40 into the contest, but Nick Bonino forged a tie in the middle period and Daniel Sedin snapped it 1:47 into the third. Ryan Miller made 20 saves in his first start since the regular-season finale as the Canucks avoided their third first-round exit in as many postseason appearances. Vancouver has not won a playoff series since 2011, when it lost to Boston in seven games in the Stanley Cup final.

      TRENDS:

*Predators are 2-9 in their last 11 overall.
*Over is 4-1-1 in Blackhawks last 6 overall.
*Predators are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings in Chicago.
*Over is 9-2-3 in Predators last 14 overall.

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames (-126, 5)
      Flames lead series 3-2

After failing on their initial attempt, the Calgary Flames take a second shot at winning their first playoff series in 11 years when they host the Vancouver Canucks in Game 6 of their Western Conference first-round matchup on Saturday. Calgary, which hasn't advanced past the opening round since making a trip to the Stanley Cup final in 2004, split the first two games of the series in Vancouver before capturing the next two contests at Scotiabank Saddledome to grab a 3-1 lead.

      TRENDS:

*Under is 5-1-2 in the last 8 meetings.
*Canucks are 0-4 in their last 4 road games.
*Home team is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
*Flames are 22-7 in their last 29 vs. Pacific

Under continues to sizzle in Rangers' playoff games

The New York Rangers ended the Pittsburgh Penguins' season thanks to a 2-1 overtime victory in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series Friday, while continuing a red-hot totals trend in doing so.

Dating back to the 2011 NHL Playoffs, the Under is 16-32-19 in 67 postseason games for the Blueshirts.

New York will face the winner of Washington and the cross-town rival Islanders in the next round.

Blackhawks to stick with Darling in net for Game 6

Despite allowing four goals on 28 shots in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Nashville Predators, Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Scott Darling will be between the pipes in Game 6 Saturday.

Darling, who relieved struggling incumbent starter Corey Crawford in Game 3, has led his squad to three wins in the first-round series. The Hawks own a 3-2 lead with the Windy City set to play host once again on the weekend.

Books are dealing Chicago as healthy -165 moneyline favorites for the postseason clash.

Blackhawks cashing the Over with ease in postseason games

The Chicago Blackhawks have been a boon for Over bettors in postseason clashes as of late, evidenced by the Over going 17-7-2 in the Hawks' playoff games over the last two years.

Chicago holds a 3-2 series lead over Nashville and can send the Preds golfing with a win in the Windy City Saturday. So far in the first-round series, the Over has paid out in four out of the five contests.

Despite having a rough outing in Game 5, Scott Darling will return to the crease for the Blackhawks in place of regular starter Corey Crawford.

Oddsmakers currently list Chicago as a -168 moneyline favorite with a total of 5.

          Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Warriors 109, Pelicans 98-- Golden State first NBA team to advance.

-- Bucks 92, Bulls 90-- Good side out of bounds play got Bucks winning hoop.

-- Grizzlies 115, Blazers 109-- Is Memphis the most obscure good team in all of professional sports?

-- Calgary 7, Vancouver 4-- Flames' first playoff series win since 2004.

-- Orioles 5, Red Sox 4 (10)-- Weird night in Baltimore; fans were told to stay inside the ballpark, even if the game ended, due to protests outside the stadium. Then the Orioles tied the game; extra inning gave cops enough time to quell the protests.

-- Cardinals 5, Brewers 3-- St Louis may have lost Wainwright for season.

          **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

          13) There are rumors about that the Bulls will fire coach Tom Thibodeau when the season ends, despite his 255-139 regular season record; Scott Brooks got canned despite a terrific record, Lionel Hollins, Vinny Del Negro and George Karl all got sacked two years ago-- they all had won 56+ regular season games.

To paraphrase Vince Lombardi on that NFL Films clip, "What the hell's going on out there?!?!" Seems like there is too much politics in NBA coaching.

          12) New York media has already declared Matt Harvey to be the next Koufax, but Al Leiter had a good tidbit during Saturday's game; when CC Sabathia was Harbey's age, he had already started 178 big league games and won a Cy Young. award-- he got a much earlier start and may be finished earlier, too.

          11) The dimensions in Yankee Stadium are a joke; its a softball park in right field and its going to prevent them from having good pitchers, because who in their right mind wants to pitch half their games there? It is every bit as bad as pitching in Coors Field.

          10) Minnesota Twins scored a total of four runs in losing Phil Hughes' first four starts; Toronto scored 13-12-12 runs in Mark Buehrle's first three starts.

          9) I'm not a big fan of strict platooning in baseball; one team pinch-hit for a lefty hitter in the 4th inning of a game last summer, because the other side put a lefty pitcher in. If a guy isn't good enough to play the first five innings of a game, then he shouldn't be starting in the first place.

          8) Through Friday's games, the major league batting average was .245; if the first pitch of an at-bat was put into play, that went up to .318.

          7) Ben Zobrist is out 4-6 weeks after getting his knee scoped; A's got taken by Tampa Bay on this trade; Zobrist is damaged goods, a 33-year old who played several years on artficial turf. Go figure.

Oakland's season is already headed for the ashcan; their bullpen sucks, they can't hit lefties-- they're 30-45 since trading Yoenis Cespedes last July 31.

          6) Speaking of the Rays, they're 0-10 on replay challenges this season.

          5) Mets' rookie catcher Kevin Plawecki hit his first career homer in the Bronx yesterday; my question is this-- if you caught that ball in the bleachers, how much you charging him for it? You have him over a barrel, its his first career home run ball-- HE HAS TO HAVE IT!!!

Let me know what your ideas are....I have my own idea.

          4) Steve Stricker missed the cut in New Orleans this week, meaning longest current streak of consecutive cuts made on Tour is Matt Kuchar, at 22.

          3) Wow I was watching the Houston-Dallas game on TV Friday night; I'd get tired of the Dallas PA guy pretty darn quick if I went to games there. Tone it down a little, big fella. No need to make everyone deaf.

          2) There are betting lines out on some NFL games already; draft is next week, so how you betting games so long before the season starts, before you even know who all the starting quarterbacks are?

          1) Peyton Manning donated $3M to Tennessee's football program; thats three million, with an M. How much money does this guy have?

NHL roundup: Blackhawks eliminate Predators, advance

CHICAGO -- Duncan Keith scored the tiebreaking goal to lead Chicago to a series-clinching 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night.

Chicago advanced to the second round of the playoffs after eliminating Nashville in Game 6 of the best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal.

Patrick Sharp, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane also scored for the Blackhawks.

James Neal scored two goals for Nashville. Matt Cullen added a goal.

              Flames 7, Canucks 4

CALGARY, Alberta -- Jiri Hudler and Michael Ferland each scored twice and Matt Stajan scored the first playoff goal of his 12-year career as the Flames eliminated their Canadian rivals 4-2 in the Western Conference playoff series.

The Flames will face the Anaheim Ducks in the second round.

Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan also scored for the Flames. Jannik Hansen and Radim Vrbata, Brandon McMillan and Luca Sbisa scored for the Canucks.

              Islanders 3, Capitals 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Nikolay Kulemin scored just beyond the midway point of the third period as New York staved off elimination in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

To advance to a conference semifinals series against the rival New York Rangers and ensure at least two more games at the Coliseum, the Islanders will have to win Game 7 against the Capitals on Monday night at Verizon Center.

The Islanders also got goals from John Tavares and Cal Clutterbuck. John Carlson scored for Washington.

              Red Wings 4, Lightning 0

TAMPA, Fla. -- Detroit bounced back to beat Tampa Bay and take a 3-2 series lead.

Tampa Bay had rallied in the final minutes Thursday and won in overtime in Detroit to tie the series, but it couldn't find the same spark Saturday.

Detroit got goals from center Riley Sheahan, left wing Drew Miller and center Pavel Datsyuk, plus an empty-net score from defenseman Danny DeKeyser with 1:36 remaining.

Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek got his second shutout in the series, stopping all 28 shots.

                  Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Wizards 125, Raptors 94-- Gutless tank job by Toronto, which was favored to win series but got swept instead, not even bothering to compete in Game 4.

-- Clippers 114, Spurs 105-- Best series on paper has turned out that way.

-- Cavaliers 101, Celtics 93-- Love got hurt, JR Smith got tossed/suspended.

-- Minnesota 4, St Louis 1-- Wild faces Chicago in next round.

-- Montreal 2, Ottawa 0-- Senators had a terrific year, nonetheless.

-- Orioles 18, Red Sox 7-- Think Ben Cherington called Philly last night?

                  **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

                  13) Kevin Love separated his shoulder Sunday, is expected to miss 2+ weeks, which is pretty much the entire next playoff series. JR Smith will be suspended for Game 1 of next series. Expensive win for Cleveland.

                  12) Mike Conley has multiple facial fractures, is out for the Grizzlies' game in Portland tonight; he flew back to Memphis over the weekend.

                  11) If I designed a golf course, there would be a lot of water on it, maybe small streams running parallel to the fairways. Sand traps look nice but are a waste of time. Water is intimidating, makes the course a lot harder.

                  10) Dodgers' Alex Guerrero has 13 RBI in 23 plate appearances; why doesn't he play more? Its not like they have Mike Schmidt at third base.

                  9) Dodgers put Yasiel Puig on the DL and replaced him with Andre Ethier, who makes $18M a year. Must be nice to have such well-paid subs.

                  8) Max Scherzer hurt his thumb batting yesterday, says he now favors using the DH. Adam Wainwright hurt his ankle/achilles batting Saturday, is probably out for the year. I'm against the DH; why can't pitchers be better at hitting?

                  7) Tampa Bay's Chris Archer allowed one earned run in his last four starts (26.2 IP). Rays get Matt Moore back from injury, they might be better than all of us thought this spring.

                  6) Bronx 6, Queens 4-- ESPN's Sunday night game was a defensive horror for the first few innings. Mets have to shore up their middle infield defense if they're going to be a serious postseason contender.

                  5) Curt Schilling brought up a great point last night; it takes 32-35 good major league players to make the playoffs. I remember in 2012, the A's got help from guys like Brandon Hicks (two walk-off HRs), George Kottaras, Seth Smith- they were in first place for one day that year. Fortunately, it was the last day.

Teams only have 25 guys on their active roster, but over the six-month season, all teams will have injuries and need replacements. The teams that compete for championships have solid depth, even in AAA.

                  4) Former Boston College basketball coach Al Skinner has resurfaced as the coach at Kennesaw State; within 2-3 years, he's going to scare the hell out of some big-name team in the first round of the NCAAs. He can recruit.

                  3) Indiana got very good news when Yogi Ferrell said he is coming back for his senior year; stuff like that gives a program positive momentum.

                  2) *********** has posted spreads for NFL games for Weeks 1-16; Oakland is not favored to win any of its games.

                  1) I love pro football, but good lord I'm sick of all this draft buildup; just wake me up when the draft starts Thursday night. There is too much media and they do way too much speculating. Just tell me what really happens.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff.......

                        13) Another baseball game was cancelled at Camden Yards Tuesday due to the rioting/curfew in Baltimore. Wednesday's game is at 2pm and will be the first big league game ever played with no fans.

Baltimore's weekend series against Tampa Bay has been moved to the Trop; the Orioles will be the "home team" for those games.

                        12) Rockets 103, Mavericks 94-- Houston advances to second round for first time since 2009. Enjoyed listening to Chris Webber on this game, talking about how improved foul shooting is the product of one thing-- good practice.

                        11) Spurs 111, Clippers 107-- Speaking of which, DeAndre Jordan was 7-16 on the foul line and this led directly to San Antonio grabbing a 3-2 series lead. Asked a few people who coached last night if they would foul on purpose if they were in Spurs' shoes- when million$ of dollar$ are at $take, the an$wer i$ ye$. You find an opponents' weakness, you exploit it.

                        10) Match Play tournament starts today; since 1999, the average seed of the winner has been 19.6; Brooks Koepka is #19, Kevin Na #20.

                        9) Blue Jays 11, Red Sox 8-- Boston allowed 34 runs in its last three games, as the price tag for Hamels/Kazmir, even Bud Norris keeps going up. Boston's five starting pitchers have an ERA of over 6.00, worst in major leagues.

                        8) Speaking of which, Masahiro Tanaka is on the DL, as trends point to him needing Tommy John surgery. Forearm strains are often a precursor to issues with the UCL, which is what just sidelined Brandon McCarthy for the season.

                        7) Senator from Vermont named Bernie Sanders is running for President; never heard of the guy, but at first glance, he looks like Verne Lundquist.

                        6) John Daly turned 49 years old this week, which means that a year from now, the Senior Tour is going to get a big boost, if Daly chooses to play there.

                        5) Bo Jackson is 51 years old, has an artificial hip; he won a long drive contest at a charity golf tournament this week, hitting a golf ball 331 yards. You never hear about him anymore, which means he has a good life. Good for him.

                        4) Nationals 13, Braves 12-- Atlanta led 10-2 after the 4th inning; Washington has been playing terrible baseball. Teams combined to allow nine unearned runs in this game. The NL East is wide open for the Mets to win, especially is the Nationals keep playing this sloppily.

                        3) When the NBA holds its draft in June, shouldn't the D-league draft be immediately after it, starting at midnight and shown on the NBA Network? It would be obvious to everyone then what kids got bad advice and maybe more kids would stay in school instead of coming out when they should not.

                        2) My point is this-- there are 30 NBA teams, it is a two-round draft, so that is sixty selections. 48 college players, 43 international kids applied for this year's draft- thats not counting the college seniors. It just does not add up-- lot of kids could still be in college, getting better-- college teams practice more.

                        1) Since Kevin Durant helped get Scott Brooks fired, I hope he at least got Brooks' cellphone bill reduced, the way he does on that TV commercial.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....

Preview: Red Wings (43-25) at Lightning (50-24)

                              Date: April 29, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

One more game in the first round of the NHL playoffs. One last chance to catch a memorable duel between Tampa Bay forward Tyler Johnson and Detroit goaltender Petr Mrazek.

Johnson and the Lightning host Mrazek and the Red Wings in Game 7 of their seesaw series on Wednesday night. The winner then travels to Montreal for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Friday night.

'This is Game 7. We worked extremely hard to get ourselves in this position,' Tampa Bay star Steven Stamkos said Tuesday. 'No one remembers what happened in Game 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. We have to be a lot better than we have been. They've come in here and beat us twice. We have that mentality we were the best team at home in the league for a reason, and we have to show that.'

Detroit had a chance to eliminate Tampa Bay at home on Monday night, but Johnson collected two more goals to lead the Lightning to a 5-2 victory. Jason Garrison, Alex Killorn and Cedric Paquette also scored as the league's highest-scoring team in the regular season got untracked after being held in check by Mrazek and the Red Wings for much of the first round.

But Detroit won at Tampa Bay in Games 1 and 5, and the teams have alternated wins in the series. Each team has scored 15 goals, as well.

'I'm not surprised in hindsight that we're here,' Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. 'I thought we were going to be good in this series. I thought it was going to be competitive contrary to what the experts thought. I thought we were going to be a real tough out and we are, and I also think we're going to win tomorrow. That's just the way I think.'

The Red Wings will be without Niklas Kronwall after the veteran defenseman was suspended for the game by the NHL for charging Tampa Bay forward Nikita Kucherov late in the second period in Game 6. Kronwall knocked off Kucherov's helmet with the huge hit.

No penalty was called and Kucherov took seven shifts in the third, finishing with three assists.

'I thought it was a good hit,' Babcock said. 'Kucherov was leaning back trying to get out of the way. Kroner's foot was on the ice when he made contact.'

The last time Detroit played in a Game 7, it lost 2-1 to Chicago when Kronwall had a shot by Brent Seabrook go off his leg and into the net in overtime in the 2013 Western Conference semifinals. It will be the first Game 7 for Tampa Bay since it lost to Boston in the 2011 Eastern Conference finals.

Jimmy Howard was in goal for the Red Wings for that difficult loss to the Blackhawks, but Babcock has gone with the 23-year-old Mrazek against the Lightning. The Czech goaltender has two shutouts and a 2.30 goals-against average in his first postseason series.

Mrazek had 23 saves in Game 6, including a spectacular stick stop on Brian Boyle in the second period.

Six of the 15 goals allowed by Detroit have gone to Johnson, who is tied with Vladimir Tarasenko of St. Louis for the playoff lead. Stamkos, who was second in the league with 43 goals during the regular season, has yet to score in this postseason.

Babcock said Johnson has been 'the driving force' for the Lightning in the series.

'He's a competitive guy,' Babcock said. 'He's got good speed. He's competitive defensively. He plays 200 feet.'
