NHL Western Conference playoffs: Round 1 preview and picks

No. 1 Vancouver Canucks (-190) vs. No. 8 Los Angeles Kings (+165)

The Canucks have picked the right time to play their best hockey. Vancouver earned its second consecutive President’s Trophy by winning eight of its last 10 games, allowing just 16 goals over that stretch.

The two clubs split the season series, with the Kings out-shooting the Canucks in three of the four games. The Kings’ penalty kill was the fourth best in the league but will be tested by the fourth-most dangerous power play.

Daniel Sedin’s status for this series remains up in the air. There have been reports that Sedin is skating by himself and that he will likely return in the first round. Goaltender Roberto Luongo will start the playoffs for the Canucks but the team won’t hesitate to turn to Cory Schneider, who finished the season with a 1.96 GAA and a .937 save percentage.

Anze Kopitar and Co. have been struggling offensively all season and if that doesn’t change they won’t have a shot at stopping the Canucks.

Season Series: Vancouver (2-1-1), Los Angeles (2-2)

Series prediction: Canucks in six games


No. 2 St. Louis Blues (-150) vs. No. 7 San Jose Sharks (+130)

St. Louis dominated a number of teams this season and the San Jose Sharks were no exceptions. The Blues won all four meetings between the two clubs, shutting them out twice and outscoring the Sharks 11-3.

The Blues are by far the stingiest club in the league allowing just 165 goals which lead to Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott sharing the William Jennings Trophy. But Ken Hitchcock’s club isn’t exactly riding a high heading into the playoffs. The Blues dropped four of their last five games allowing the Canucks to lock up the top spot in the Western Conference.

San Jose swept home-and-home series with both Dallas and Los Angeles to secure seventh place in the West but has been far too inconsistent in 2012. The bottom line in this series is that the Blues are simply too good on home ice (30-6-1-4) for the Sharks to have a legitimate shot of winning four games.

Season Series: St. Louis (4-0), San Jose (0-4)

Series prediction: Blues in five games


No. 3 Phoenix Coyotes (+120) vs. No. 6 Chicago Blackhawks (-130)

You won’t find a goaltender playing better than the Coyotes’ Mike Smith. Smith allowed just two goals in his last five games, powering the Coyotes to their first division title.

"He's embraced the No. 1 goaltender role with our team and he's played excellent," Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett told reporters. "He had a few games there where he was basically willing us into the playoffs. His game is top-notch right now. Hopefully it goes into the playoffs and that continues."

Smith won all three games he started against the Blackhawks this season. Chicago picked up a victory the one time they faced backup Jason Labarbera.

At the other end of the ice, bettors will likely see both Corey Crawford and Ray Emery at some point. Chicago finished 22nd in goals against but relied on a lethal offense to finish sixth in the conference.

Chicago captain Jonathan Toews missed the final 22 games of the regular season with a concussion and, at this point, there are no guarantees he returns for this series.

Season Series: Phoenix (3-1), Chicago (2-2)

Series prediction: Coyotes in six games


No. 4 Nashville Predators (+105) vs. No. 5 Detroit Red Wings (-125)

While it wasn’t confirmed until the Red Wings picked up a point against the Blackhawks Saturday, everyone had been expecting to see this matchup for the past month.

It was critical for the Predators to finish fourth in the West and keep the Red Wings away from home-ice advantage. Detroit has the worst road record (17-21-2-1) of any playoff team. The Predators are a respectable 26-10-2-3 at home.

Shea Weber’s heavy shot anchors the deadliest power-play unit in the league, firing at a 21.6-percent clip. Late-season addition Alexander Radulov has made the power play even more dangerous with seven points in nine games since joining the team.

The Red Wings lead the league in even-strength goals, with a 1.44 for/against ratio. If the two sides stay out of the penalty box, Detroit could have the advantage. It also has much more playoff experience than the Predators.

Much like the rest of this series, the goaltenders are evenly matched. Pekka Rinne had a league-best 43 wins during the regular season but Jimmy Howard’s GAA was significantly better with their save percentages looking nearly identical.

Season Series: Nashville (3-3), Detroit (3-3)

Series prediction: Predators in seven games

Ottawa Senators at Montreal Canadiens (-150,5)

With respect to Devan Dubnyk, Carey Price and Andrew Hammond arguably were the two most discussed goaltenders in the NHL this season. A Vezina Trophy favorite and likely Hart Trophy candidate, Price looks to guide the Atlantic Division-champion Montreal Canadiens past the upstart Ottawa Senators when the teams open their Eastern Conference first-round series at the Bell Centre on Wednesday.

Price led the league with a franchise-best 44 wins while his goals-against average (1.96) and save percentage (.933) were second to none in the NHL. The 27-year-old Price was less than spectacular while splitting his two decisions versus Ottawa while the Senators emerged victorious in the two other meetings. Ottawa, which resided 14 points out of a playoff berth on Feb. 10, posted a 23-4-4 mark to secure the top wild-card position - and Hammond (20-1-2, 1.79 GAA, .941 save percentage) played an integral role in that surge. The first-year sensation won his first start with a 4-2 triumph over Montreal on Feb. 18 and became the first goaltender in the NHL's modern era to earn at least one point in each of his first 12 career road starts, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

New York Islanders at Washington Capitals (-145,5)

The Washington Capitals claimed home-ice advantage over the New York Islanders on the final day of the regular season, and that edge could prove pivotal as the Metropolitan Division rivals open their Eastern Conference first-round series at the Verizon Center on Wednesday. The home team won each of the four meetings this season, with Washington captain Alex Ovechkin scoring four goals against New York and 53 overall to become the sixth player in league history with at least six 50-goal campaigns.

Ovechkin also added an assist against the Islanders, who ventured into overtime before winning both of their home meetings with the Capitals. Captain John Tavares matched Ovechkin by recording five points (two goals, three assists) - including an overtime tally on Nov. 26 - and his career-high 86 points fell one shy of Dallas' Jamie Benn for league lead in that department. Both goaltenders etched their names into their respective franchise's record books, with Washington's Braden Holtby (41-20-10, 2.22 goals-against average, .921 save percentage) matching Olaf Kolzig in wins and appearances (73) while tying Jim Carey's single-season mark with nine shutouts. New York's Jaroslav Halak (38-17-4, 2.43, .917) set the franchise record in wins and recorded 11 more than his previous career high, which was set with St. Louis in 2010-11.

Chicago Blackhawks at Nashville Predators (-115,5)

The Chicago Blackhawks stumbled to the finish line during the regular season but will head into the playoffs on an upbeat note after learning that All-Star forward Patrick Kane will return to the lineup for Wednesday's playoff opener at the Nashville Predators. Chicago scored only five goals during a season-ending four-game skid to finish in third place in the Central Division - two points behind the Predators, who enter the postseason riding a six-game losing streak.

Kane was tied for the league lead in scoring and was among the front-runners for MVP honors when he suffered a broken collarbone on Feb. 24 - an injury that was expected to sideline him for 12 weeks. "He was having an MVP-type of season," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "Getting him back just makes you have so many more options. His versatility in all areas certainly enhances our team." Nashville owned the league's best record for much of the season and was running away with the Central until dropping 15 of its last 21, a stretch that featured a pair of six-game slides. The Predators have lost nine of 11 (2-6-3) at home in that span, including four in a row.

Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks (-150,5)

After closing out the regular season with a three-game winning streak that helped them secure second place in the Pacific Division, the Vancouver Canucks attempt to continue their successful ways when they host the Calgary Flames in the opener of their first-round playoff series Wednesday. Vancouver - which ranked second in the league on the penalty kill - wrapped up the campaign with a three-game homestand and made the most of it, defeating Los Angeles, Arizona and Edmonton by a combined 12-6 score.

The Flames finished strong to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2009, winning five of six contests before dropping a 5-1 decision at Winnipeg in the season finale. After falling to Vancouver in the 2014-15 opener, Calgary finished the season series 2-0-1 - coming up short in overtime before posting a pair of one-goal victories. The Canucks and Flames have met six times - all in the first round - in the postseason, with Calgary capturing four series. The Flames won the most recent matchup in 2004, emerging victorious in seven games and advancing all the way to the Stanley Cup final before losing to Tampa Bay.

One betting stat you need to know about the Senators

The Ottawa Senators finished the regular season with an 11-0-3 record in their final 14 road contests, the longest such point streak in franchise history.

Ottawa closed the regular season and clinched their playoff birth with two victories away from home - a 3-0 win at the New York Rangers and a 3-1 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on the final day.

The Eastern Conference series against the Montreal Canadiens begins in Montreal Wednesday evening. The Sens are currently priced at +130.

-- Miami Heat played four starters 48 minutes last night; I've never seen that before in an NBA game. Fifth starter played 41 minutes; one sub played 7:00. Weird.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Chicago 4, Nashville 3 OT-- Not often a winning goalie in an NHL playoff game is a non-starter; Predators led 3-0, blew the game, now Chicago has home ice in this series. Nashville has only won two playoff series in franchise history this is no way to win #3.

12) How great is overtime in playoff hockey? Nothing else like it in sports.

11) USA Network has NHL playoff games for first time in 30 years, when Al Albert (now is Phoenix Suns' announcer) and former coach Gary Green did the games. Why doesn't ESPN have any NHL games?

10) NFL Draft is in two weeks in Chicago; 26 players will be there, but neither of the top two picks, QBs Winston/Mariota will be there. You would hope their agents will at least make them available for TV interviews that night.

9) There is a guy who travelled to see all 82 Knick games this year, at his own expense, and now he wants to write a book about it. If nothing else, he should get a free pass into a mental ward for doing this.

8) Brooklyn Nets have to pay $11M in luxury tax, most of any NBA team. At least they got into the playoffs-- ironic that Lionel Hollins got into the NBA playoffs when his old team the Grizzlies knocked Indiana out last night.

7) Lance Stephenson made 18-105 (17.1%) from arc this season, the worst %age ever for an NBA player who took 100+ 3's in a season.

6) We live in an impatient society; Boston Bruins fired their GM Wednesday, four years after they won the Stanley Cup, one year after they had the best record in the NHL's regular season. No one has patience anymore- they missed out on the playoffs by a game and now heads have rolled. Doesn't seem fair.

5) Atlants Hawks went 60-22 this season, despite no player scoring 30+ points in any game this season. Elias says that has never happened before for any team that won 50+ games-- the Hawks won 60 games!!!!

4) All three of VCU's incoming recruits begged out of their letters of intent after Shaka Smart bolted for Texas. New coach Will Wade has his work cut out for him mantaining the Rams' talent level in the near future.

3) Bad week for the Arkansas Razorbacks, with Portis/Qualls both going pro; Mike Anderson hasn't had to deal with early departures very often. Anderson's system is dependent on depth and talent; these departures greatly reduce both.

2) Flames 2, Canucks 1-- Calgary scored with 0:29.6 left to upset Vancouver 2-1 and grab home ice advantage in their first round series.

1) Houston Rockets got the #2 seed in the West; James Harden got a triple double last night in their 117-91 win over the Jazz Wednesday.

Letdown spot

The Pittsburgh Penguins squeaked into the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, finishing No. 8 in the Eastern Conference and lining up a date with the President Trophy winners, the New York Rangers, in the opening round. The Penguins run the risk of being “just happy to be there” as they head into Game 1 in Madison Square Garden Thursday.

Pittsburgh punched its postseason ticket with a 2-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres in the regular season finale – anything but a sure thing with the team stumbling into that game on a five-game losing skid. Now, after that close call, the Pens are set up for a letdown in Game 1 of this first-round series, especially after dropping three of their four meetings with the Blue Shirts this season.

Lookahead spot

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been counting down to the postseason since LeBron James announced he was on his way back home last summer. And for LeBron, the first round of the NBA Playoffs have been a formality. According to ESPN, James is a perfect 9-0 in opening round series for his career and is undefeated in each of those nine series openers. But while those career playoff stats are impressive, Cleveland could get caught looking past opening-round opponent Boston and to a conference semifinal showdown.

The Celtics have a young team and are outclassed when it comes to postseason experience. However, Boston enters its season finale with Milwaukee on a five-game winning streak, going 5-0 ATS, including two wins over the Cavs in that span – one with starters and one without. The Celtics are just young and dumb enough – 30-17 ATS as underdogs - to ride that confidence into this series, with heaping handfuls of points, and catch Cleveland with its guard down in Game 1.

Schedule spot

Spring in Chicago is a lot different than spring in San Diego. The change in temperature kick starts those famous Windy City gusts, which still have a leftover chill from winter. The San Diego Padres visit Wrigley Field for a weekend set, starting Friday, and they may want to pack their long-sleeve shirts. This will be the first time this season the Padres have left California.

Temperatures in Chicago are in the mid-40s while back home in San Diego, temps are peaking in the mid-70s. Friday’s forecast doesn’t look too bad with sun for this 2:20 p.m. ET start but things will cool off as the weekend goes on, with a chance of rain come Sunday. Last season, the Padres got to visit Chicago in July and avoided the cool spring weather.

Crashing Penguins face poor matchup in Rangers

The Pittsburgh Penguins are limping into the playoffs, with just one win in their past six games, and may be facing off against the last team they've wanted to see in the New York Rangers.

The Pens have dropped six of the last seven against the Broadway Blueshirts, while being outscored 26-11. The slumping Pittsburgh offense has only averaged 1.7 goals per game over their past 15 games.

The Penguins are currently +155 when they travel to Madison Square Garden Thursday.



NHL roundup: Isles stun Caps in series opener

WASHINGTON -- Center Brock Nelson, right winger Ryan Strome and left winger Josh Bailey all scored their first career playoff goals and goaltender Jaroslav Halak stopped 24 of 25 shots to lead the New York Islanders to a series-opening 4-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Nelson completed his night by slam dunking an empty-netter with 1:19 to play for his second of the game.

The Islanders are looking for their first playoff series victory since 1993 and started this one in convincing fashion, outshooting the Capitals 27-25 and controlling the play for long stretches.

Winger Marcus Johansson scored the lone goal for the Capitals, who, like the Islanders, are returning to the playoffs after a one-year absence.

Canadiens 4, Senators 3

MONTREAL -- Right winger Brian Flynn scored a goal and added two assists to lead Montreal over Ottawa in Game 1 of their quarterfinal series.

Goaltender Carey Price stopped 30 shots for the Canadiens while netminder Andrew Hammond made 35 saves for the Senators.

Centers Torrey Mitchell, Tomas Plekanec and Lars Eller also scored for the Canadiens. Left winger Milan Michalek and centers Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejad replied for Ottawa.

Blackhawks 4, Predators 3 (2OT)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Defenseman Duncan Keith ended it for Chicago with a slapper at 7:49 of the second overtime against Nashville for a 1-0 series lead.

Making his return from a 21-game absence with a fractured left collarbone, Chicago right winger Patrick Kane set up two power-play goals in the second period to help his team rally from an early three-goal deficit. Backup goalie Scott Darling stopped all 42 shots he faced in relief of Corey Crawford to earn the win for the Blackhawks. Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, left winger Patrick Sharp and center Jonathan Toews scored in regulation for Chicago.

Nashville led 3-0 after one period and got 38 saves from goalie Pekka Rinne while center Colin Wilson scored twice, and left winger Viktor Stalberg once.

Flames 2, Canucks 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Defenseman Kris Russell scored with 29.6 seconds left in the third period to give Calgary a victory over at Vancouver in the opening game of their Western Conference quarterfinal playoff series.

Right winger David Jones also scored for the Flames who battled back from a 1-0, second-period deficit. Center Bo Horvat scored for the Canucks.

Calgary goalie Eddie Lack, making his first ever playoff start, stopped 28 shots. Calgary goalie Jonas Hiller, making his 27th playoff start, made 29 saves.

13) Cubs finally brought Kris Bryant up to big leagues; he stayed in minors for 12 days, meaning the Cubs keep him until club control for an extra year, which is a terrible rule. Its also against the rules for Cubs to do that, but they did it.

12) Odd thing is that Bryant never played a home game this year in AAA; his team won on road in Memphis/New Orleans. Wonder where all his stuff is? He has gone from spring training to AAA and now to the big leagues.

11) NHL has done an excellent job miking its players, showing locker room scenes after games, doing NFL Films-type stuff. Well done. Playoff hockey is first-class entertainment.

10) If you care about such things, there are 3,073 names on the Stanley Cup.

9) One last hockey note: the St Louis Blues made the Stanley Cup finals their first three years in existence (1968-70), went 0-12 in those three series but have not been back in the finals since.

League expanded from six to 12 teams in 1967; all six new teams were in the Western Conference, meaning one of the new teams would be in the finals every year. St Louis was the best of those teams, but their fans have had a very long wait to win a Stanley Cup.

8) There is a Senator from Oklahoma named James Lankford; I know nothing about the guy, but I'm hearing him on TV as I type this-- he has a tremendous voice. He could make a fortune doing voiceovers on commercials.

7) Adrian Peterson was re-instated by the NFL; next question is, will he stay on the Vikings, or get traded somewhere else (Dallas???)?

6) There are four NBA teams who finished in the top 10 this year, in efficency on both offense and defense: Spurs-Hawks-Warriors-Trailblazers.

5) High school athletes sign with the college head coach more than they do with the college itself; Dominic Green signed with Arizona State last fall, but he has re-opened his recruitment, with Herb Sendek getting fired. Green shoots it well, is considered a top 150 recruit.

4) UNLV is having a very good week; Stephen Zimmerman signed with the Rebels this week- he is a local 7-footer who played for Dave Rice's brother in high school at Bishop Gorman. Nigel Williams-Goss may also go to UNLV after transferring from Washington- he would be a tremendous get for the Rebels, and he has two years left in college.

I'm told that when local boosters were clamoring for Rice's head right after the season ended, Zimmerman's mom sent UNLV's AD an e-mail that said her son wouldn't play for the Rebels if Rice got fired. Take that, boosters.........

3) There will soon be a college basketball tournament in the Cayman Islands, much like the event in Atlantis every November. More basketball is good!!!!

2) Do you think these NFL prospects get tired of all these interviews they do with teams? They're only going to play for one team, but half the league has been picking their brains. Has to be tiring for a young person.

1) If NFL Network ever wants to do a great reality show, they should show us an inside peek at how the schedule is made up every year. This year's schedule hasn't been finished yet and it looks like it will be released later than usual.

Canadiens lead series 1-0

As was the case when the clubs met two years ago in the postseason, the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators didn't waste much time ratcheting up the vitriol in their Eastern Conference first-round series. Atlantic Division-champion Montreal dealt the first significant blow in more ways than one with a 4-3 victory in the series opener, and looks to extend the advantage when it hosts Ottawa in Game 2 on Friday.

Brian Flynn scored his first career playoff goal late in the second period and joined defenseman P.K. Subban with two assists to lead the Canadiens to victory on Wednesday. Subban, however, was involved in a slashing incident with Mark Stone nearly midway into the second period that caused a microfracture of the right wrist and some ligament damage to the promising Senators rookie, and resulted in the Montreal blue-liner receiving a game misconduct. Stone, who is listed as "very questionable" to play in the rest of the series by general manager Bryan Murray, ended the regular season on an impressive nine-game point streak (eight goals, five assists). The 22-year-old also had 26 tallies and set up 38 more to match Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau for the most points (64) by a rookie during the 2014-15 season.

The New York Islanders will look to seize a 2-0 lead in a playoff series for the first time in 32 years when they visit the Washington Capitals on Friday in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round series. Brock Nelson scored twice to send New York to a 4-1 triumph over its Metropolitan Division rival on Wednesday, giving the club a series lead since it won Game 1 versus Ottawa in 2003.

For the Islanders to win the first two contests of a series for the first time since sweeping Edmonton in the Stanley Cup final in 1983, they'll need to continue to keep captain Alex Ovechkin in check. The Russian superstar led the league with 53 goals, but was kept off the scoresheet despite registering a team-leading eight shots. "I don't think our execution was there," Washington forward Brooks Laich said. "It starts with thinking quicker and moving quicker. I don't think we did that well in the first period. The result was that we looked like a slow team. It has to get better."

There's a new Darling on the sports scene in the Windy City, but the Chicago Blackhawks will revert to an old and familiar formula when they visit the Nashville Predators in Game 2 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series. The Blackhawks erased a three-goal deficit en route to a 4-3 victory in double overtime on Wednesday as rookie Scott Darling stopped all 42 shots he faced after replacing an ineffective Corey Crawford.

Despite the brilliant performance by Darling in his postseason debut, Chicago coach Joel Quenneville called it an "easy decision" to go back to Crawford for Game 2. "It was kind of a no-brainer. It was probably a tougher situation to pull him out (Wednesday night)," Quenneville said. "He’s been our strength all year long. It was one period.” Nashville, which lost its final six games of the regular season, must regroup after bolting to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes before giving up three goals in the second period. "Other than the second period, I thought we played a really good game," Nashville captain Shea Weber said. "It just didn't go our way, and now we've just got to move past it."

After stealing home-ice advantage away from Vancouver in the opener, the Calgary Flames look to bring a 2-0 series lead back to Alberta when they visit the Canucks for Game 2 of their Western Conference first-round matchup on Friday. Calgary pulled out the victory in Game 1 with another of its patented third-period comebacks, as David Jones forged a tie eight minutes into the session and defenseman Kris Russell scored with 30 seconds remaining for the 2-1 triumph.

It was the 11th win of 2014-15 when trailing after 40 minutes for the Flames, who tied for the league lead with 99 goals in the final period during the regular season. Vancouver received its best efforts from a pair of players making their postseason debuts as rookie Bo Horvat scored the lone goal while Eddie Lack turned aside 28 shots. However, it wasn't enough to prevent the Canucks from falling to 0-7 at home in the playoffs since Game 5 of the 2011 Stanley Cup final against Boston. Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins has yet to announce whether Lack will be back in net for Game 2 or if he will turn to veteran Ryan Miller, who was not sharp in his return from a knee injury in the regular-season finale versus Edmonton.

NHL roundup: Datsyuk leads Wings to win in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Lightning, which had the NHL's best home record in the regular season, opened the playoffs with a home loss Thursday night.

Detroit center Pavel Datsyuk scored twice to lead the Red Wings to a 3-2 win at Amalie Arena.

Detroit took a chance by starting Petr Mrazek, 23, in goal over veteran Jimmy Howard, 31, but Mrazek played superbly, making 44 saves.

Center Luke Glendening scored the other Detroit goal while center Brian Boyle and defenseman Nikita Nesterov scored for Tampa Bay.

Rangers 2, Penguins 1

NEW YORK -- Center Derick Brassard scored 27 seconds into the first period as the New York Rangers defeated Pittsburgh in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series at Madison Square Garden.

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh also scored for the Rangers, who received 24 saves from goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

Right winger Blake Comeau scored for the Penguins. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury allowed two dubious goals but was otherwise solid in stopping 36 shots.

Wild 4, Blues 2

ST. LOUIS -- Left winger Jason Zucker and defenseman Matt Dumba scored to lead Minnesota over St. Louis in the first game of their opening-round playoff series.

After getting only 11 shots on goal through the first two periods, the Blues cut the lead to 2-1 at 7:12 of the third period when left winger Jaden Schwartz deflected a shot by defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk past goalie Devan Dubnyk.

The Wild sandwiched empty-net goals from center Mikael Granlund and right winger Jason Pominville around a short-handed goal by left winger Alexander Steen to close the scoring.

Ducks 4, Jets 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Anaheim got prolific performances from its top point producers to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with Winnipeg at Honda Center.

Anaheim right winger Corey Perry contributed two goals and two assists, including the deciding goal that was awarded upon review. Defenseman Sami Vatanan and center Ryan Getlzaf added a goal and two assists each. Left winger Adam Lowry and right winger Drew Stafford scored for Winnipeg.
