    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- 46,314 watched the Reds-Blue Jays game in Montreal last night; where were those people when they had a team in Montreal?

-- Game in Montreal took 2:10, which is too fast. 2-0 baseball games are generally not that much fun, epsecially when around 30% of that time is TV commercials.

-- Three countries in the world still don't use the metric system; United States, along with Burma and Liberia.

-- Dallas Mavericks are 9-16 against Western Conference playoff teams.

-- Twins' pitcher Ervin Santana gets 80 games for PEDs, the same steroid that got Ben Johnson DQ'd from the '88 Olympics.

-- Bowling Green's basketball coach was making $335,000 before he got fired this week; assistant coach who just left Missouri for another job was making $325,000.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

    13) If they do wind up putting another baseball team in Montreal, it'll be either the Rays or A's, two teams that can't get anyone in their current city to build them a stadium. Would be very sad if the A's ceased to exist so there could be a rebirth of the Montreal Expos, in a city that only likes hockey.

    12) Woman in the express lane (14 items or less) in front of me at the grocery store Friday spent $111.23 on roughly 21 items; the complete lack of manners some people have today defies belief. I sound like someone's father, but.......

    11) Brooklyn Nets are 13-9 since trading Kevin Garnett; Minnesota is 4-17 since they made the trade.

    10) Shaka Smart had a $500,000 buyout at VCU; to satisfy part of that, Texas has to play the Rams home/home, or send them a check for $250,000.

    9) Angels sounded disappointed that Josh Hamilton didn't get suspended for his drug relapse, as in "You mean we still have to pay him?"

    8) NBA record for having played for the most teams is 12, held by four guys: Joe Smith, Jim Jackson, Tony Massenburg and Chucky Brown. Three of those four guys played college ball in the ACC, the fourth in the Big 10-- its hard to become an established star in the NBA.

    7) Fireworks nights are big draws at baseball parks across the country, so the A's are having six of them this season.

    6) Stanford Cardinal won two of last four NITs, which isn't all that good; most coaches would rather make the NCAA tournament and lose than win the NIT.

    5) adidas put up a billboard near Wrigley Field Friday that says "Worth the Wait", referring to third base prospect Kris Bryant.

    4) Every time I watch the Milwaukee Bucks play, they play great; they're under .500 but will make the playoffs-- maybe I should watch more often

    3) Knicks were down 30-8 at Washington Friday before the pizza got cold; its incredible how depressing a team they have.

    2) NBA's problem is the Lakers make the Knicks look promising; plus they're in the West, so they're getting pummeled by better teams and its going to take them a lot longer to become relevant again.

    1) Exhibition baseball games have been great to watch this month, but after a month of them, they get a little mind-numbing, simply because the results do not count. Will be great to watch some games that matter, with no players wearing #98 or #85.

Blue Jackets extend streak to eight straight games

Don't tell the Columbus Blue Jackets they have nothing to play for, as they topped the New York Islanders 4-3 in overtime Thursday night for their eighth straight win.

The Blue Jackets are officially eliminated from the playoffs, despite winning 11 of their last 12 games. The good news for bettors is they are more than happy to play spoiler with eight of those 11 wins coming as underdogs.

Expect Columbus to be dogs when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday.

Sens will lean on red-hot Hammond once again vs. Caps

The Ottawa Senators can thank rookie sensation goaltender Andrew Hammond for their late season playoff push, and he'll be between the pipes once again Saturday for a big home game against the Washington Capitals.

"The Hamburglar" is a sizzling 16-1-1 in his first 18 career starts for the surprising Senators. The British Columbia native owns a .940 save percentage and a miniscule 1.80 GAA this year.

Ottawa is currently -115 on the moneyline at most shops.

Welcome to the NHL Daily Picks where hockey writers Adam Gretz and Chris Peters make their picks for select games every day.

Vancouver Canucks vs. Winnipeg Jets, 3 p.m ET

The Jets begin their four-game stretch without their best defenseman, Dustin Byfuglien, after he was suspended for a brutal cross-check to the back of New York Rangers forward J.T. Miller on Tuesday night. This is a tough stretch for the Jets because they enter the day -- and begin his suspension -- on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture and their next three games are against teams currently in the playoffs. Byfuglien will be back for the regular season finale, but depending on what happens over the next four games -- and especially the next three -- it may not even matter all that much. The Canucks look to end their tough four-game road trip on a high note after already winning two of the first three against Nashville, St. Louis and Chicago. Pick: Canucks 3, Jets 2

Colorado Avalanche vs Los Angeles Kings, 10 p.m ET

The Kings open the day tied with Winnipeg in the standings with 90 points but hold the final Wild Card spot in the west because they have more non-shootout wins than the Jets. Holding the tiebreaker helps, as does having a schedule the rest of the way that features three teams currently out of the playoffs, including Saturday's home game against Colorado and one more game against Edmonton, who they just beat 8-2. Of the three teams fighting for the two remaining playoff spots in the West the Kings are definitely the one team nobody wants to see get in. With a win tonight and a Calgary loss the Kings would move back into the third spot in the Pacific Division. Colorado just played on Friday night in Anaheim, beating the Ducks 4-2. Pick: Kings 3, Avalanche 1

Edmonton Oilers vs. Calgary Flames 10 p.m. ET

By the end of the day on Saturday the Flames could either be comfortably in a playoff spot, several points up on the Kings and Jets, or out of the playoffs entirely with a regulation loss and wins by the Kings and Jets. That's how tight things are at the bottom of the Western Conference playoff field right now. Fortunately for the Flames they should be able to take care of their own business on Saturday with a game against Edmonton. The Flames are going for the complete season sweep of the Oilers having already won the first four meetings this season by a combined margin of 17-8.

                The rest of Saturday's schedule

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Carolina Hurricanes, 1 p.m ET

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets, 2 p.m. ET

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Boston Bruins, 7 p.m. ET

Washington Capitals vs. Ottawa Senators, 7 p.m ET

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Florida Panthers, 7 p.m. ET

Buffalo Sabres vs. New York Islanders, 7 p.m. ET

New Jersey Devils vs New York Rangers, 7 p.m. ET

Detroit Red Wings vs. Minnesota Wild, 7 p.m. ET

Dallas Stars vs. Nashville Predators, 8 p.m. ET

San Jose Sharks vs. Arizona Coyotes, 9 p.m. ET

                Three Stars

                1. Jaromir Jagr, Florida Panthers: Getting out of New Jersey has been the best thing that could have happened to Jagr this season when it comes to his production. He already has 14 points in 16 games with the Panthers, including five multi-point games. He only had six multi-point games in 57 games with the Devils. He has at least one point in six of his past eight games and is coming off of a two-point game in their 6-1 blowout win over Carolina on Thursday.

                2. Sean Monahan, Calgary Flames: He has quietly put together a pretty incredible season in Calgary. His 30 goals put him 12th in the NHL, and it's important to keep in mind that he is still only 20 years old. He has points in 11 out of his past 15 games for a Flames team that looks to maintain its playoff position on Saturday when it takes on its provincial rival from Edmonton.

                3. Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals: It's not a question of whether or not he's going to win the goal scoring crown, it's a question of how many goals he's going to score and how many he's going to win it by. He's up to 52 goals now after his two-goal performance in Montreal on Thursday and has at least two points in three straight games.

Teams' record in NCAA tournament (since '89) against teams from the Big 14........

13-2-- Duke-- Go for 14th win vs Wisconsin tomorrow night.

8-4-- Kentucky-- Tough way for a great season to end last night.

                      5-2-- UConn

                      3-0-- Missouri.........2-0-- Wichita State/Boston College

                      7-4-- North Carolina/Kansas

                      3-1-- Arkansas

6-4-- Texas-- Rick Barnes did pretty damn well in Austin.

                      4-3-- Florida

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this baseball season

                      13) Cubs have a new manager, lot of good prospects, a stadium that will be undegoing renovation all season and very high expectations. When will they call 3B prospect Kris Bryant up from AAA? America is watching......

                      12) Red Sox have a lot of hitting, not so much pitching; will they pull the trigger on a big trade for s starting pitcher? Injury to Christian Vazquez makes it harder to part with catching prospect Swihart.

                      11) Mets also have high expectations, a manager under pressure to win and a nitwit owner. They're loaded with starting pitching, thin on defense in middle infield. Will they trade Daniel Murphy? Now that New York media has deemed Matt Harvey a combination of Gibson/Koufax, will he stay healthy?

                      10) Rays-- Gutted by defections of GM Friedman, manager Maddon; could be headed to Montreal to become the Expos. Starting rotation starts season with three of top five guys hurt. Things are not looking up.

                      9) Giants won World Series in three of last five seasons; kind of odd how they became a power shortly after Barry Bonds retired-- they had a dreadful spring, didn't play well, but its an odd-numbered year, they're not supposed to win.

                      8) Padres upgraded their roster with Shields-Kemp-Upton; big year for Bud Black, who has to contend now, or else.......

                      7) Orioles lost Cruz/Markakis, really didn't replace them; they hope Machado and Wieters return fron injury and are more productive. Showalter gives them an edge, but at the end of the day, players win/lose.

                      6) Oakland A's have three players left who were on squad before 2013 and none of the three (Sogard-Chavez-Scribner) are world beaters- their lineup has been totally turned over, but their piching is still strong. .

                      5) Diamondbacks-- So much of the Arizona brass are former A's, will be fun to see how they do. Don't think they'll be timid making moves. They must like Archie Bradley if they traded Cahill to make room for him.

                      4) Alex Rodriguez will get lot of attention as he returns from his exile; can he still hit at a high level? Can he play third? First? They're stuck with him for another three years and $60M, so he better be productive.

                      3) Cubs aren't the only Chicago team that spent lot of $$$ this winter; White Sox have upgraded the roster, Detroit looks to be a little down, can they win the division? Four of five teams can make a strong case for AL Central title.

                      2) If Philly gets off to a slow start, will they jump ship and trade Hamels and Utley? They're in decline; Howard's contract is untradeable, they don't have lot of young prospects on way up. Could be a long summer on Broad Street.

                      1) Hopefully, all this talk about speeding up the game is just lip service to passify lazy media members who whine about length of games; the game is fine, our attention-deficit society is the problem. I'm looking forward to the start of the season; get info every day on my MLB page on this site.

                          NHL

                          Sunday, April 5

Penguins' C Evgeni Malkin, questionable Sunday

Malkin has missed the last two games with an undisclosed injury and is questionable to play Sunday against the Flyers.

                          Canadiens struggling, especially in overtime

The Montreal Canadiens are entering the playoffs slumping as they have dropped five of their past six games. Of those five losses, three have come in overtime or a shootout.

The lack of rest for Carey Price may be showing as well, with the goalie carrying a 3.75 goals against average during the past six.

The Habs will visit the Florida Panthers Sunday and are currently -125 road faves, with a low total of 4.5.

Flyers attempt to continue domination over Penguins

The Philadelphia Flyers have won the past seven contests against in-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins. Philly has outscored the Pens 26-13 during that stretch, including 12-6 this season.

Both teams are coming off games Saturday night, will only Steve Mason confirmed in nets for the Flyers.

NHL playoff picture: Battle continues for spots

The muddled NHL playoff picture cleared up a bit on Saturday -- but just a bit after a day of shootouts, overtimes and narrow victories for a number of the teams still jockeying for a spot in the postseason.

The Tampa Bay Lightning helped decide two issues: In securing home-ice advantage for the first round, the Lightning eliminated their in-state rival Florida Panthers from the postseason with a 4-0 victory.

The Panthers weren't alone in seeing their playoff hopes dashed on Saturday. The Los Angeles Kings defeated Colorado, ending any playoff aspirations the Avalanche had.

Colorado and Florida were long shots after surviving Friday's action, so their elimination was not a surprise.

And the importance of having home-ice advantage wasn't lost after Tampa Bay blanked Florida.

"It's really important," right winger Ryan Callahan said after the Lightning (104 points) tied the idle Montreal Canadiens atop the Atlantic Division. "Home ice really comes into play if you have that Game 7."

The Pittsburgh Penguins had a chance to move out of the wild-card spot and put some distance between themselves and Ottawa, but their downward spiral -- 3-7-1 since March 12 -- continued against the hot Columbus Blue Jackets.

Suddenly, the ninth-place Ottawa Senators are only three points behind the Penguins and a playoff spot for Pittsburgh is not guaranteed.

"Every team that's not in a (clinched) playoff spot, that's their biggest concern," Penguins coach Mike Johnston said. "It's ours for sure."

In the Western Conference, Winnipeg, San Jose and Dallas remain alive in the chase for a wild-card spot.

The playoff chase is unchartered territory for the Jets, who are in a dogfight to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since moving to Winnipeg from Atlanta in 2011.

"It's hard (to stay calm)," said Jets right winger Lee Stempniak, 32, a 10-year veteran playing for his seventh team since being drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2003. "Your season's on the line. Every game right now is crucial to us being in the playoffs and we're all aware of that."

Winnipeg and Los Angeles both have played 78 games. Both have 92 points and trail Calgary by one point in the Pacific Division. The Flames have played 79 games.

One of these three teams will not make the playoffs.

Two crucial games on Sunday might go a long way toward deciding two more playoff spots.

The struggling Penguins travel to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers. By the time the puck drops for Ottawa-Toronto, the Senators will know if they can close the gap and put even more pressure on the Penguins.

The Red Wings and the Capitals also square off with significant playoff implications.

Blue Jackets extend streak, keep cashing as dogs

The Columbus Blue Jackets topped the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 Saturday night for their ninth straight win and continue to win as an underdog.

Last night the Blue Jackets were +116 underdogs, making it the seventh time in the nine game streak they have won outright as pups.

Expect the Blue Jackets to be underdogs once again when they go for 10 row when they visit the New York Rangers Monday.

Devils finally go over a total

The New Jersey Devils got thrashed 6-1 by the New York Rangers Saturday night, it was the first time the Devils went over a total in 12 games.

The Devils had been 0-7-4 over/under in that 11 game span, making them the top under play in the NHL at 23-45-11 O/U for the season.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Happy Opening Day, everyone!!!

                              13) Atlanta Braves raised a white flag the day before Opening Day, shedding roughly $55M in net salary, but dealing closer Craig Kimbrel to San Diego. You know your career is in the ashcan when a team trades their closer so they can also get rid of you (BJ Upton).

                              12) Meanwhile, the Padres are an intriguing team as the season starts; no one can say they're not trying to challenge the Dodgers/Giants in NL West.

                              11) Alabama hires Avery Johnson as its hoop coach; he was NBA Coach of the Year in 2006, but has never coached in college. Johnson's son plays for Texas A&M, an SEC rival of Alabama. People think he'll be a great recruiter.

Guys on ESPN Sunday went out of their way to praise Johnson as a person, so thats cool. The SEC has some outstanding basketball coaches.

                              10) One last thought on Shaka Smart-to-Texas: Smart made $1.8M at VCU LY; they offered him a raise to $2.8M, but he bolted to Texas for $3M a year. There is a thought process among some coaches (think Buzz Williams-- Marquette to Virginia Tech) that it is wise to align with a school that plays bigtime football, that the real money/security is there. It'll be interesting to follow, but it is unfair to say that Texas blew VCU out of the water financially.

                              9) Cavaliers are 31-7 in their last 38 games, so no one talks about them- they haven't lost at home since January 7.

                              8) NBA handicapping trend: Celtics are 10-1 vs spread on the road, when they played at home the previous night.

                              7) Would love to know how Brad Stevens likes coaching in the NBA, as compared to college. Getting Butler to the national title game two years in a row is one of the great achievements in recent college history. Boston is #8 in the East right now; Stevens can have his choice of college jobs, if he wants that.

                              6) As if this season hasn't been dismal enough for the Knicks, you watch the Cavaliers on TV and see JR Smith being a huge part of their success. Yikes.

                              5) How is Bo Ryan not in the basketball Hall of Fame? Four national titles at the D-3 level, two Final Fours in D-1-- he's not a Hall of Famer? Bull.

                              4) Texas Rangers employed professional ball shaggers in spring training; they pay guys to suit up, go out in the field and shag balls during batting practice, so players don't have to do that. Not that modern ballplayers are pampered or anything. No infield practice during the season, now no shagging. Oy.

                              3) Reds' 3B Todd Frazier is from Toms River, NJ; his walk-up music is very Jersey: "Best is Yet to Come" by Frank Sinatra.

                              2) I feel bad for Kentucky's players; they had a great year, winning 38 games in a row, but all anyone will remember is the one loss.

                              1) Cardinals 3, Cubs 0-- Was great to watch game that counts; Chicago could have used a third baseman who can hit. Too bad they don't have anyone like that in their farm sys-- oh wait, forget I said anything.
