    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Current odds to win the World Series this year.........

Washington Nationals 13-2-- Added Max Scherzer this winter.

Los Angeles Dodgers 17-2-- Middle infield will be rollins/Kendrick this season.

    Seattle Mariners/Boston Red Sox 10-1-- Boston's pitching is a big ?????

Chicago Cubs/St Louis Cardinals 12-1-- Lot of expectations in Wrigleyville.

Los Angeles Angels 14-1-- No Hamilton, now Colby Rasmus is hurt, too.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random thoughts for a Sunday morning

    13) Our thoughts and prayers go out to Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, who lost his mom to a heart attack Saturday morning, but coached his team last night anyway.

    12) UCLA 92, UAB 75-- Blazers made 12-26 from arc and still lost by 17; let me say this now. Just because UCLA is in the Sweet 16 doesn't mean they belonged in the tournament, just like a team losing doesn't mean they didn't belong.

    11) Kentucky 64, Cincinnati 51-- Bearcats played their asses off but didn't come close to winning, but they did cover the spread. If a team upsets Kentucky, they'll be a team that makes a lot of 3's and can match the Wildcats on the backboards.

    10) Arizona 73, Ohio State 58-- Wildcats are now 9-1 in last ten second round games (8-1-1 vs spread). D'Angelo Russell went 3-19 from floor in what was likely his last college game. Not sure if Arizona shoots well enough to beat Kentucky.

    9) Xavier 75, Georgia State 67-- Weird game with only 35 missed shots; Xavier made 68% of its shots, Panthers 57%. Obviously, Xavier and UCLA caught huge breaks when the #3 seeds in their regions got beat. Thats how unlikely champions emerge.

    8) Utah 75, Georgetown 64-- If John Thompson III's dad hadn't been an iconic coach at the school, JTIII would need another job-- their program is very ordinary now. Not sure if it matters, but Utes didn't look good the last two weeks, but they won twice this weekend, they're still alive and headed to the Sweet 16.

    7) North Carolina 87, Arkansas 78-- This is a good time to point out how much fun it is to be in Las Vegas this weekend. Am hoping to make a spring training trip a year from now and tack it onto March Madness, see my A's practice in Arizona. Could be too much fun for one month, but its worth a try.

    6) Notre Dame 67, Butler 64 OT-- This was a tremendous game, lot of drama; not sure why these teams don't play each other every year. CBS hits the jackpot making this the last game of the day. Then we find out hours later that Mike Brey coached this game knowing his mother had died earlier in the day. Courageous thing to do.

    5) NC State 71, Villanova 68-- Since 1987, #1 seeds are 116-0 in the first round, and 101-15 in the second round, with Villanova being the 15th loss. Of the other 14 teams that lost this early in the tournament, three made the Final Four the next season, with Arizona in 2000 the last team to do so.

    4) Out of those 15 second round losses by a number one seed, Kansas has three of them, Stanford two.

    3) Only two of those 14 teams fell off the cliff and missed the NCAAs the next year; Cincinnati in 2001, Pittsburgh in 2012.

    2) DePaul and Mississippi State need new basketball coaches, which is bad news for a couple mid-majors who are about to lose their coach. NCAA tournament is a lot of fun, but if you're a coach whose team doesn't make it, your job is in jeopardy.

    1) Quote of the Day, part 2: "I'm very much in favor of high school kids going pro. I had six young men commit to me out of high school that didn't go to college, that went to the pros. I'm very much for that because they didn't want college. They wanted to go to the NBA. And if they go to the [NBA Development League], that's fine with them." Rick Pitino

American League West preview: Can Astros compete?

      Oakland Athletics (88-74, -16.14 units, 77-76-9 O/U)

      Odds to win division: +454
      Season win total: 81.5

Why bet the Athletics: It's easy to forget that the A's were the best team in baseball for a considerable period last season. While they're coming off a down-year for their backers, they have a history of bouncing back and their re-worked middle of their order should pace the charge with Josh Reddick, Billy Butler and Brett Lawrie ready to inflict damage.

Why not bet the Athletics: While the middle of the A's order is solid, the latter half is ugly at best. Oakland's pitching staff certainly isn't as air-tight as it has been in previous years either, with at least two question marks in the starting rotation and closer Sean Doolittle expected to start the season on the D.L.

      Season win total pick: Over

      Seattle Mariners (87-75, +3.63 units, 66-88-8 O/U)

      Odds to win division: +148
      Season win total: 86.5

Why bet the Mariners: The Mariners didn't sit idle in the offseason, doing what they could to address their offensive concerns by adding Seth Smith and Nelson Cruz. Seattle's pitching was top flight a year ago and should be in the same class in 2015. While the Mariners won't sneak up on anyone after a breakout campaign, they should still offer value as most bettors still see them as a mediocre club.

Why not bet the Mariners: The bullpen has a few bright spots but closer Fernando Rodney isn't one of them. Even with the additions to the M's lineup, there are still plenty of weak spots from 1-through-9. They'll need to manufacture runs on most nights and aren't going to win many slugfests, which may not bode well in the A.L. West.

      Season win total pick: Under

      Los Angeles Angels (98-64, +21.41 units, 88-77-5 O/U)

      Odds to win division: +176
      Season win total: 88.5

Why bet the Angels: No team won more games than the Angels last season and most of the key pieces from that club are back in the fold in 2015. The emergence of Matt Shoemaker last season gave the Angels one of the best 1-2-3 punches in baseball as far as starting rotations go. You have to like the fact that despite being a 'public' team, Los Angeles still managed to bank over 21 units for its backers last year.

Why not bet the Angels: What about the bullpen? The Angels 'pen performed well last season but I'm not completely sold on this group. Huston Street is the closer but whether he can stay healthy remains to be seen. At the dish, say what you will about Josh Hamilton but there's no question his absence will be felt.

      Season win total pick: Under

      Houston Astros (70-92, +1.02 units, 71-87-4 O/U)

      Odds to win division: +1600
      Season win total: 75.5

Why bet the Astros: This is a franchise on the way up. The Astros managed to make money for their backers last season despite finishing 22 games under .500 and figure to improve considerably here in 2015. Adding Evan Gattis should give an already powerful lineup a boost, with Chris Carter and George Springer coming into their own as well.

Why not bet the Astros: Defense is an often overlooked aspect when it comes to baseball betting and in that department, the Astros could be awfully bad this season. Their pitching staff has some upside but there will also be some more growing pains endured. This young group isn't accustomed to winning but rather learning on the fly and that could keep them from getting over the hump.

      Season win total pick: Over

      Texas Rangers (67-95, -20.48 units, 70-81-11 O/U)

      Odds to win division: +604
      Season win total: 77.5

Why bet the Rangers: Things can't go any worse than they did last year, can they? Not likely. It's important to remember that Texas had posted four straight 90+ win seasons prior to 2014's stinker of a campaign. As long as the injury bug doesn't bite hard again, the Rangers have enough talent to at the very least stay afloat in the A.L. West.

Why not bet the Rangers: I'm not sure it's as easy as simply counting on a bounce-back performance from the Rangers. They made only minor adjustments to their roster in the offseason and their pitching staff in particular still leaves a lot to be desired, especially if Derek Holland isn't able to return to form. There are simply too many players trying to get healthy and being asked to shoulder much of the load.

      Season win total pick: Under

National League Central preview: Cards favored in most balanced division

        Chicago Cubs (2014: 73-89, -450 units, 82-72-7 O/U)

        Division odds: 11/4
        Season win total: 83

Why bet the Cubs: There is momentum surrounding Chicago after a solid offseason. Jon Lester heads up an improving rotation with Jake Arrieta who was a surprise last year. Hector Rondon had a 0.62 ERA in the second half of last season. Anthony Rizzo has found his stroke and he will be solid in the middle of this offensive lineup.

Why not bet the Cubs: The rest of the rotation is weak with Travis Wood, Jason Hammel and Kyle Hendricks most likely filling things out. The majority of the bullpen is still hard to trust and the offensive lineup is extremely young. Javier Baez struck out 225 times last year in the majors and minors combined.

Season win total pick: Under 83 wins

        Cincinnati Reds (2014: 76-86, -1050 units, 71-85-6 O/U)

        Division odds: 15/1
        Season win total: 77.5

Why bet the Reds: Johnny Cueto is an ace and he is the second best pitcher in the league after Clayton Kershaw. Cueto is backed by veteran starters Homer Bailey and Mike Leake. Aroldis Chapman can be a dominant pitcher as well. Joey Votto and Billy Hamilton make up a solid offensive lineup that can hit.

Why not bet the Reds: The majority of the bullpen is shaky with limited depth. The bench is young and lacking in talent. Can Jay Bruce bounce back from some career lows last year?

Season win total pick: Over 77.5 wins

        Milwaukee Brewers (2014: 82-80, -721 units, 75-83-5 O/U)

        Division odds: 12/1
        Season win total: 78.5

Why bet the Brewers: Ryan Braun returns for another season and he appears to be 100 percent ready. The former MVP has the potential to be a dominant hitter in the middle of this lineup. Kyle Lohse, Matt Garza and Yovani Gallardo provide a strong top three in the pitching rotation. Wily Peralta and Mike Fiers have also shown flashes of brilliance during their young careers.

Why not bet the Brewers: The bullpen is shaky as Jonathan Broxton is untrustworthy and the pitchers behind him are very young with few quality options available. Aramis Ramirez is getting older and his effectiveness going forward is questionable. Health has been an issue with Adam Lind as well.

Season win total pick: Under 78.5 wins

        Pittsburgh Pirates (2014: 88-74, +597 units, 74-79-9 O/U)

        Division odds: 5/2
        Season win total: 84.5

Why bet the Pirates: AJ Burnett is back with his former team and he joins Francisco Liriano, Gerrit Cole and others in a solid pitching rotation. Andrew McCutchen continues to be one of the best hitters and overall players in the league. The bullpen is underrated as a unit and Mark Melancon had a fantastic 0.92 WHIP the past two seasons.

Why not bet the Pirates: The lineup is prone to struggle around McCutchen. Russell Martin was a big loss in the clubhouse and Francisco Cervelli is unlikely to replace him. There are new names in the bullpen that must compliment current veterans. Expectations are high in Pittsburgh this year, but the Pirates must still battle in the most balanced and competitive division in the league.

Season win total pick: Over 84.5 wins

        St. Louis Cardinals (2014: 90-72, +207 units, 73-82-7 O/U)

        Division odds: 6/5
        Season win total: 87.5

Why bet the Cardinals: A veteran team that contains experienced players that have won in this division. The bench picked up Mark Reynolds who will be a productive role player. Jason Heyward plays good defense which improves the outfield. The pitching rotation is solid with strong starters and relievers.

Why not bet the Cardinals: Adam Wainwright's health has been an issue in the past and he missed some games last year. John Lackey is aging and he has pitched over 2,000 innings during his career. The Cardinals are favored to win this division, but all four teams behind them are capable of winning as well. This is the deepest and most balanced division in the league.

Season win total pick: Over 87.5 wins

Red Wings' C Pavel Datsyuk, out Sunday

Datsyuk has a lower-body injury and has missed the last two games. He will not return Sunday against the Blues.

Bruins' C David Krejci, questionable Sunday

Krejci is recovering from a knee injury and is questionable to return Sunday against the Lightning.

Rangers' G Henrik Lundqvist, questionable Sunday

Lundqvist is on injured reserve while recovering from a neck injury but could return Sunday against the Ducks.

Markstrom expected to start for Canucks Sunday

Jacob Markstrom will look to redeem himself after some awful starts for the Vancouver Canucks Sunday. In Markstrom's two appearances this season he has posted an awful 0-1 record with a 10.21 goals against average and a .500 save percentage.

That includes a terrible first start against the San Jose Sharks when he allowed three goals on four shots.

Vancouver visits the Arizona Coyotes Sunday.

NHL roundup: Vrbata's late OT goal lifts Canucks

LOS ANGELES -- Right winger Radim Vrbata broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period on a five-on-three power play as the Vancouver Canucks scored three consecutive goals to defeat the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 on Saturday.

It was a stinging defeat for the defending Stanley Cup champions in a game with serious playoff implications. Had the Kings (34-23-14) emerged with a win in regulation, they would have tied the Canucks for second place in the Pacific Division.

Kings right winger Marian Gaborik opened the scoring with a power-play goal 24 seconds into the second period, his 22nd goal of the season. The Canucks (41-26-4) tied it at 14:54 when center Nick Bonino scored on an assist from Vrbata. Left winger Daniel Sedin and center Bo Horvat added third-period goals for the Canucks.

The Kings were two points behind Winnipeg for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference before the Jets took the ice against Washington on Saturday night. Of the Kings' final 11 games in the regular season, eight are on the road. Los Angeles begins a five-game road trip on Monday night at New Jersey.

Blue Jackets 3, Flames 2 (OT)

CALGARY, Alberta -- Left winger Rene Bourque scored two goals, including the winner in overtime, as Columbus kept its slim playoff chances alive.

Bourque corralled a loose puck and slipped it past Calgary goaltender Karri Ramo for the winner. The former Flames winger's sixth goal of the year came with 59 seconds left in overtime.

While Columbus (33-35-4) won for the fifth time in six games, the Blue Jackets still remained 13 points behind Boston for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Center Artem Anisimov added a third-period goal for Columbus and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 38 saves.

Center Sean Monahan and left winger Jiri Hudler scored goals and Ramo made 23 saves for the Flames (39-27-6).

            Wild 6, Blues 3

ST. PAUL, Minn -- Right winger Justin Fontaine had a goal and two assists and left winger Thomas Vanek added a goal as Minnesota bolstered its playoff chances with a win over St. Louis.

Left winger Zach Parise, defenseman Jonas Brodin and center Mikko Koivu added goals for the Wild (40-25-7). Goaltender Devan Dubnyk had 26 saves.

Right winger Vladimir Tarasenko and left winger Jaden Schwartz had a goal and an assist for the Blues (45-21-6). St. Louis goaltenders Brian Allen and Jake Allen combined for 22 saves.

The Wild are three points ahead of the Winnipeg Jets for the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference, but moved five points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings. St. Louis and Minnesota are projected to meet in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

            Oilers 5, Flyers 4 (OT)

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored his second goal of the game 2:46 into overtime to lift Edmonton over Philadelphia at Rexall Place.

The game-winner capped a wild shootout as the Oilers and Flyers combined for six goals and 22 shots in the first period.

Nugent-Hopkins started it with his 21st goal of the season at the 51-second mark, but the Flyers answered with three straight -- two from center Claude Giroux at 4:25 and 12:00 and one from center Ryan White at 14:17. The Oilers fought back. Left wingers Ted Purcell and Matt Hendricks scored at 16:15 and 19:29 to make it 3-3.

Edmonton scored 1:11 into the second for a 4-3 lead and right winger Jordan Eberle's goal stood up as the only one in the period. Another quick goal opened the third period -- Flyers left winger Michael Raffl at 46 seconds -- to even the score at 4.

            Penguins 3, Coyotes 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona goalie Mike Smith banked a shot into his own net off Pittsburgh center Brendan Sutter's backside midway through the second period, Daniel Winnik added a goal and the Penguins finished with more than two goals for the first time in five games at Gila River Arena.

Pittsburgh went 13:12 before getting a shot on goal in the game, but the Penguins broke through at 8:45 of the second period on a freakish power-play goal. Smith stopped a puck behind his net and inexplicably tried to clear it up the middle of the ice. The puck struck Sutter in the rear and caromed into the net to tie the score 1-1.

            Predators 3, Sabres 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Left winger Taylor Beck, centers Craig Smith and Mike Fisher scored and goalie Pekka Rinne notched 24 saves for the 36th shutout of his career as Nashville won at Bridgestone Arena.

Winning for just the third time in 12 games, the Predators (44-21-8) pulled into a first-place tie in the Central Division with the St. Louis Blues, who lost 6-3 at Minnesota. The Predators also snapped a season-high five-game losing streak at home.

            Stars 4, Blackhawks 0

DALLAS -- Right winger Patrick Eaves and center Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist each, defenseman Alex Goligoski added two assists and goalie Kari Lehtonen stopped 33 shots as Dallas defeated Chicago at the American Airlines Center.

            Islanders 3, Devils 0

NEWARK, N.J. -- Goaltender Jaroslav Halak collected 25 saves in his first action in more than a week and center Ryan Strome scored a first-period goal to lead the New York Islanders over New Jersey at the Prudential Center.

The victory enabled the Islanders to snap a four-game losing streak and continue their domination over the Devils (31-30-11), who saw their three-game winning streak snapped and lost to New York for the fifth straight time.

            Panthers 2, Bruins 1 (SO)

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Florida gained ground in the battle for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, defeating Boston in a shootout at the BB&T Center.

The only goal in the shootout was by Panthers center Brandon Pirri. Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo stopped Boston's Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and Ryan Spooner to get the win.

            Senators 5, Maple Leafs 3

OTTAWA -- Center Kyle Turris scored a tiebreaking power-play goal in the last minute of the second period to break and added an empty-netter as Ottawa defeated Toronto.

Several shutouts help unders cash Saturday night

Saturday night's NHL action was highlighted by five shutouts, leading to a big night for under bettors, with the under going 8-3-2.

The under cashed at a rate of 72.7 percent last night, much higher than the 52.3 average for the season.

Senators keep streak going with sixth straight win

The Ottawa Senators are the hottest team in the NHL, winning their sixth consecutive game 5-3 over the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night.

The Senators are 9-1 in their last 10 games and now just sit one point back of the Boston Bruins for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Rookie Andrew Hammond also tied an NHL record, not losing in regulation in his first 14 career starts, going 13-0-1.

The Sens go for seven in a row when they host the San Jose Sharks Monday.

Game of the Day: Ducks at Rangers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at New York Rangers (-129, 5.5)

The Anaheim Ducks look to extend their winning streak to five games when they open a five-game road trip against the New York Rangers on Sunday. Corey Perry scored on a breakaway 1:25 into overtime as Anaheim skated to a 3-2 victory over Colorado on Friday. The overtime tally was the sixth in the career of Perry, tying the former Hart Trophy winner with the retired Teemu Selanne and captain Ryan Getzlaf for the most in franchise history.

Perry also has enjoyed success versus the Rangers, recording his 10th point in 11 meetings with an assist in the Ducks' 4-1 loss on Jan. 7. Mats Zuccarello scored in that contest and also netted the lone goal of the shootout in New York's 3-2 triumph over Carolina on Saturday. The Metropolitan Division-best Rangers trail Montreal by two points in the Eastern Conference, while the Pacific Division-leading Ducks own a three-point advantage over St. Louis and Nashville in the West.

                INJURY REPORT:
                Anaheim - D Korbinian Holzer (Ques-Concussion) Rangers - G Henrik Lundqvist (Ques-Neck), RW Martin St. Louis (Out-Knee)

                ABOUT THE DUCKS (46-20-7):
Sami Vatanen made his presence felt in his return from a 15-game absence due to a lower-body injury, poking the puck away from Avalanche defenseman Brad Stuart to set up Perry for the game-winning goal. "I'm not putting him in until he's 100 percent ready, so the expectations are that he plays the same way he did before he left," coach Bruce Boudreau told the Orange County Register prior to the contest. Getzlaf, who notched an assist in the first meeting with New York, has scored three goals and set up another in his last five games.

                ABOUT THE RANGERS (45-18-7):
While Henrik Lundqvist welcomed the addition of a daughter to his family on Friday, Cam Talbot added another win to his belt after making 28 saves versus the Hurricanes. The 27-year-old Talbot owns a 6-1-1 record with a 1.11 goals-against average and .963 save percentage over his last eight games. Coach Alain Vigneault did not divulge the identity of his starting goaltender for Sunday, but Talbot has enjoyed success at Madison Square Garden - going 8-1-3 with three shutouts and a 1.62 GAA.
