    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Stanford 71, Washington 69-- Huskies didn't score in last 3:25 of game.

-- USC 67, Arizona State 64-- ASU led by 14 with 8:20 left.

    -- TCU 67, K-State 65-- Horned Frogs' first-ever win in Big X tournament.

-- FIU 57, Tex-San Antonio 54-- Kid banked in a 45-footer at buzzer for the win.

-- Air Force 68, New Mexico 61-- Lobos lost nine of their last ten games.

-- Penn State 68, Nebraska 65-- Cornhuskers lost their last nine games.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Today is best colllege hoop day of the year

    13) 51 college basketball games today, all tournament games; lot on the line. This is the best full day of the college basketball season. Friday night's card will be the best half-day of the season, with ton of tournament semi-final games.

    12) UNLV 67, Nevada 46-- Wolf Pack fired coach David Carter before the fans at this game got thru the buffet at their hotels.

    11) Florida State 76, Clemson 73-- Tigers have been in the ACC since it started up in 1953 but have never won this tournament.

    10) People are clamoring for Murray State to be in the NCAAs because they went thru their league unbeaten before losing by a point in the tournament final, but fact of the matter is their league isn't very good.

Racers got pounded back in November by Xavier and Valparaiso and lost to Portland, Houston, two mediocre teams. They have no great out of conference wins, which meant they would have to win the OVC tourney to get it and they didn't. Just the way it is; it is unfair that lot of "money teams" won't schedule Murray State because they know there's a good chance they'll lose, but they have to find tougher games somehow, and then they have to play better in those games.

    9) Colorado Rockies had a split squad Tuesday; half the squad faced the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw, the other half Felix Hernandez. Bad scheduling there.

    8) In a perfect world, a banked-in 3-point basket wound count as two points, not three. There are zero people on this planet who try to bank 3-pointers.

    7) Kentucky and Florida State are the two tallest college basketball teams.

    6) Friend of mine was headed to Las Vegas for the Kentucky Derby, but because it is the same night as the Mayweather fight, Harrah's wanted $500 for Saturday night, so my friend pushed his trip back a week. Smart man.

    5) ACC tournament will be played in Brooklyn in 2017 and 2018, even though no ACC teams are in the New York City area. None.

    4) Central Florida leads the country in a weird stat; teams are shooting 61.5% from the foul line against the Knights this season, the lowest percentage against any team.

    3) I still can't figure out why any baseball player would bat right-handed. If you bat lefty you're a few steps closer to first base. What advantage is there to batting righty?

    2) Jets traded for Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is a big upgrade over Geno Smith, even though he didn't get a football scholarship in college (he played at Harvard).

    1) Will Ferrell is playing in some baseball exhibition games today, an inning for each team in four or five different games all over Arizona. He will play every position over the course of the day, raising money for charity. He is 47 years old; am curious what this is going to look like. I'm sure his helicopter pilot will bave good stories.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

      Letdown spot

The Vanderbilt Commodores went through a lot in the final month of the SEC schedule. Vandy climbed out of the conference basement with an 8-2 SU and ATS run to close out the year, including notable wins over Ole Miss, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida, and earned the No. 7 seed in the SEC tournament. The Commodores also absorbed a sideline scandal when head coach Kevin Stallings was recorded ripping into freshman Wade Baldwin following the win against the Vols, telling Baldwon "I'm going to f-ing kill you!" after he clapped in the face of a Tennessee player.

Vanderbilt meets none other than the Volunteers in its opening game of the SEC tournament Thursday – which is sure to be a sore spot with UT. The Commodores may have peaked a little too soon and could be sitting a little fat and happy with their turnaround to end the year. The Vols edges Vandy in overtime in their first meeting of the season, so this 4.5-point spread may be a touch optimistic.

      Lookahead spot

The Pittsburgh Penguins weren’t supposed to be wallowing in the middle of the Eastern Conference come March. The high-powered Pens have fallen off the pace in the playoff race, sitting in the No. 5 spot after splitting games on a recent four-game Western road trip. Pittsburgh has what should be a “gimmie” against the Edmonton Oilers Thursday, but the upcoming calendar could have the Penguins’ focus elsewhere.

The Oilers open a three-game home stand for Pittsburgh, which welcomes the Boston Bruins – who sit eighth in the conference – and Detroit Red Wings – who are just one point behind the Pens in the No. 6 spot. The Penguins could get caught looking ahead to those Saturday and Sunday games against fellow postseason clubs, opening the door for Edmonton, which has two full days off to prepare for Pittsburgh.

      Schedule spot

Are the Atlanta Hawks real NBA title contenders or are they about to turn into a pumpkin when the clock strikes 12 with a challenging Western Conference road trip? Atlanta opens a six-game non-conference swing in Denver Wednesday, then travels to Phoenix, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Golden State and Oklahoma City.

That’s a string of six away games in nine days for the Hawks, who have won seven of their last eight overall heading into Wednesday - five of those victories coming at home. Atlanta is a solid 18-4 SU versus Western Conference opponents, going 16-6 ATS in those non-conference games.

NHL roundup: Talbot, Rangers take care of Caps

WASHINGTON -- Someday Cam Talbot will wake up from this dream and realize he is a backup goaltender for the New York Rangers.

The undrafted 27-year-old goaltender played his second game in 24 hours and was dominant again, stopping 28 of 29 shots to earn a 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night at the Verizon Center.

Left winger Carl Hagelin and center J.T. Milller scored first-period goals, right winger Marty St. Louis added an insurance goal in the third, and Talbot did the rest as the Rangers improved their record to 13-2-3 without starting goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who remains sidelined due to a neck injury.

Talbot's only blemish Wednesday night came in the first period when Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin fired a slap shot off the stick of a Rangers defender and into the net for his league-leading 45th goal of the season.

                Maple Leafs 4, Sabres 3

TORONTO -- Center Tyler Bozak scored the tying goal in the third period and added the shootout winner as Toronto edged Buffalo at Air Canada Centre.

Right winger Brandon Kozun and center Leo Komarov had the other Toronto goals in regulation. Goaltender Jonathan Bernier made 30 saves for his 20th win of the season.

Center Johan Larsson, left winger Matt Moulson and right winger Tyler Ennis each had a goal and two assists for Buffalo. Anders Lindback made 30 saves in the loss.

                Flames 6, Ducks 3

CALGARY, Alberta -- Left winger Johnny Gaudreau scored twice as Calgary beat Anaheim at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Center Matt Stajan also scored twice for the Flames, while centers Sean Monahan and Jiri Hudler added one goal each and defenseman Kris Russell had three assists.

Center Ryan Getzlaf scored a pair for Anaheim and defenseman Hampus Lindholm added one.
