    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Northeastern 72, Wm & Mary 61-- Double OT win Sunday took a lot out of the Tribe, which has still never made it to the NCAAs.

-- Wofford 67, Furman 64-- Gritty 10-seed damn near pulled upset of the month.

-- Gonzaga 79, Pepperdine 61-- Waves have lost 29 in a row to Gonzaga.

-- BYU 84, Portland 72-- Chase Fischer (no relation) had 20 in first half.

-- Manhattan 79, Iona 69-- Teams met in this game the last three years.

-- Summit League-- Watch some of the North Dakota State-South Dakota State title game tonight; you might be surprised how good the basketball is.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) At this time last year, South Florida thought they were going to hire basketball coach Steve Masiello away from Manhattan but it turned out Masiello never actually graduated from college, so USF backed off, and hired Orlando Antigua instead.

Manhattan suspended Masiello until he got his degree, which he did last summer; now he has won another MAAC tournament, will get more national press for the next ten days and will undoubtedly get more offers from schools with deep pockets.

Will he stay or will he go? He'll get offered a lot of money to go.

    12) Meanwhile, South Florida could've overlooked the whole college degree thing last year (Eddie Jordan coaches at Rutgers without one, Scott Walker is running for freakin' President of the United States without one). My question is this: if the gurus at USF had to do it all over again, would they have looked the other way and hired Masiello?

    11) Golfer named Sam Saunders lost in a 5-way playoff at the PGA event in Puerto Rico Sunday, which doesn't seem like big news, except Saunders is Arnold Palmer's grandson. Tough footsteps to follow in, but the young man is improving.

    10) Have you seen the TV commercial with a little kid throwing out the first pitch at a Royals' game, but he doesn't know the catcher is his dad, who just came from from his Army gig in the Middle East? I've seen that commercial 20 times, and it gets me every time. Someday I'll wrack my brain and make a list of my all-time favorite commercials, and that one will definitely be on it.

    9) Sophomore Evan Payne scored 18 ppg for Loyola Marymount this season but is transferring to another school, I'm guessing in a bigger conference, which leads you to believe it'll be Oregon-USC-San Diego State or UNLV. Mike Dunlap is a really good coach at LMU, he was an NBA head coach, but for some reason the kid is leaving.

    8) LA Clippers have now had 175 consecutive sellouts at Staples Center; thats more than four years now and the new owner has added respect to the franchise.

    7) Random prediction: Alex Rodriguez winds up playing shortstop this year; no way he is not still a plus hitter for a shortstop and he has to have as much range as the guy who had been playing there the last few years.

    6) This is the 11th year of our 16-team, keeper fantasy baseball league. 25 guys on a team, you can own minor leaguers, it is fun. Someone picked ARod up Monday and ironically, the guy he cut to make room for him was Josh Hamilton. Our league is not for a lot of money but some fantasy leagues are-- iamgine being in a big money league and having someone as fragile as Hamilton on your team? No bueno.

    5) Houston Texans signed up QB Ryan Mallett for two years; there is a serious shortage of quality QBs in the NFL- they were looking at Brian Hoyer, too.

    4) Eldrick Woods doesn't own the rights to his own name. Seriously. He's opening a restaurant in Florida, but can't call it "Tiger Woods" because Nike owns the rights to anything bearing that name. They're calling it "Tiger's in Jupiter" or something that isounds like that. Maybe they should just call it "Eldrick's"

    3) ESPN should be ashamed of itself, having professional jackasses Skip Bayless and Stephen A Smith on its payroll; they're bad imitations of WWE announcers, stirring the pot while they laugh all the way to the bank. Smith inferred Monday that Chip Kelly is a racist, which now some people will believe, because people believe a lot of what they hear on TV, no matter how stupid it is.

    2) You may not agree with how Kelly is running the Eagles, but for the love of God, the guy isn't a racist, he is just molding his team his way. If he loses, he'll get fired.

People who rant and rave about racism fail to realize that in this world, the only color that truly matters is: green. Do you have money in your pocket or don't you? Sadly, the way Smith and Bayless put money in their deep pockets is by provoking the worst kind of emotions in the people who watch their hideous program.

    1) NFL free agency starts today, which means that'll overshadow the Summit League championship game on SportsCenter, and everything else.

              Tuesday, March 10

              Islanders' Okposo might return Tuesday

New York Islanders right wing Kyle Okposo, who hasn't played since Jan. 19, could be in the lineup against the New York Rangers at Nassau Coliseum on Tuesday, according to Newsday. Okposo, who had emergency surgery to repair a detached retina, has been skating for more than a week and rejoined the Islanders before their game at the Florida Panthers on Saturday.

Anderson to start in crease for Senators Tuesday

According to the official twitter feed of the Ottawa Senators, head coach Dave Cameron has confirmed that it will be Craig Anderson who gets the start in goal with the Boston Bruins in town Tuesday.

With a record of 8-1-1 in their last 10 games, the Sens are the hottest team in the league and are making a serious push for the postseason. They are five points back of the Bruins, but have a game in hand.

The clubs have met three times thus far this season with Ottawa winning the previous two games by a score of 3-2. Boston took the first meeting in November by a score of 4-2.

The Sens have been bolstered by the goaltending of Andrew Hammond who took over when Anderson and Robin Lehner went down to injury. Anderson returned versus the Calgary Flames Sunday, allowing four goals on 46 shots in a 5-4 win.

NHL roundup: Islanders win on Tavares' OT winner

TORONTO -- Islanders captain John Tavares scored the overtime winner as New York battled back to edge the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 at Air Canada Centre Monday night.

Tavares added an assist in the win and now has a league-leading 72 points.

With the win, the Islanders take two of the three meetings in the season series and conclude their four-game road trip with points in each game (2-0-2).

Leafs left-winger David Booth and center Peter Holland gave the Leafs (26-35-6) a 2-0 lead after two periods. After right-winger Tyler Kennedy got New York (43-21-4) on the board, Toronto left winger James van Riemsdyk restored the two-goal lead at 6:06 of the third.

New York then found the back of the net twice in 30 seconds. Center Frans Nielsen made it a one-goal game at 9:58 of the third and Casey Cizikas tied it 3-3 at 10:28.

              Red Wings 5, Oilers 2

DETROIT -- Right winger Teemu Pulkkinen and centers Riley Sheahan and Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist each to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Defenseman Niklas Kronwall and right winger Justin Abdelkader also scored for Detroit. Goaltender Jimmy Howard stopped 36 shots.

Left winger Rob Klinkhammer and right winger Nail Yakupov scored for Edmonton. Goalie Ben Scrivens made 21 saves.

              Canucks 2, Ducks 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Right winger Zack Kassian broke a 1-1 tie with a goal late in the third period to give Vancouver a win over Anaheim.

Kassian took a pass from defenseman Dan Hamhuis and fired a shot that trickled through the pads of Anaheim goaltender Frederik Andersen at 16:01.

Center Bo Horvat scored midway through the first period for Vancouver, who had not beaten the Ducks at Rogers Arena in almost three years.

Anaheim leads the NHL with a 42-19-7 record for 91 points. The Ducks are 5-1-0 in their last six road games. The Canucks improved their record to 38-24-4 for 80 points.

              Predators 2, Coyotes 1 (OT)

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Nashville hasn't won a game since Feb. 24. It hasn't scored the first goal in a game since Valentine's Day. That was before it came to Arizona, where all bad streaks go to die.

Predators right winger James Neal banged in a rebound of defenseman Seth Jones' shot from the slot with 2:15 left in overtime and goalie Pekka Rinne made 27 saves as Nashville snapped a season-high six-game losing streak with a win over the Coyotes at Gila River Arena.

The win stretched Nashville's lead over St. Louis in the Central Division to four points, but the Blues have two games in hand. The Predators also pulled into a tie with Anaheim for the Western Conference and NHL leads with 91 points.

              Sharks 2, Penguins 1 (SO)

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Center Tommy Wingels scored on the backhand in the eighth round of a shootout to give San Jose a win over Pittsburgh.

Right winger Melker Karlsson was the only other Shark to solve Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury in the shootout. Sharks goalie Antti Niemi stopped seven of eight Pittsburgh shooters, including right winger Steve Downie on the visitors' do-or-die final attempt. Penguins defenseman Kris Letang beat Niemi in the tiebreaker.

The Sharks escaped a late power play that extended into overtime after Wingels was whistled for a delay of game. Pittsburgh defenseman Derrick Pouliot drew iron on a final blast with 10 seconds left in OT.
