    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- JB Holmes leads by 5 at Doral; he and Dustin Johnson both aced the 4th hole.

-- Kentucky jogged past Florida, finishes the regular season 31-0.

-- Randall Cobb (4 years, $40M) re-ups with Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay.

-- A diver did go in the water at Doral to get Rory McIlroy's 3-iron.

-- Yu Darvish has a sprained elbow, may need Tommy John surgery.

-- For some reason, Jim Harbaugh coached first base for the A's yesterday.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday........

    13) Belmont 88, Murray State 87-- Probably the best basketball game we'll see all month; worst part of Championship Week is that Murray didn't lose a game between Thanksgiving weekend and yesterday but they're probably not going to the NCAA tournament. From everything you read, their schedule was too weak.

    12) Just for the record, Belmont coach Rick Byrd is an amazing 22-3 in his last 25 conference tournament games and I don't care what league that happens in, that is still damn good. Belmont isn't real athletic, but they're smart and can shoot.

    11) Dartmouth 59, Yale 58-- Yale hasn't been to the NCAAs since 1962; they had a 5-point lead with 0:24 left, a 58-57 lead with 0:02 left- if they won this game they were in, but now they play a play-in game with Harvard Saturday at the Palestra. That had to be a brutal busride from Hanover to New Haven late last night.

    10) Furman 69, Chattanooga 67-- 10-seed upsets a 2-seed in Southern Conference.

    9) Michigan State 74, Indiana 72-- Hoosiers had ball down 2 with 0:02 left, when a Spartan player fouled on purpose, thinking his team was up 3. They weren't, but Yogi Ferrell missed the second foul shot and Michigan State won anyway. You'd think the last thing a kid would forget is the score, but it happens.

    8) Big South final this afternoon is Coastal Carolina-Winthrop, the 3-seed against the 5-seed, with winner reporting to Dayton for a play-in game on St Patrick's Day.

    7) Louisville 59, Virginia 57-- Winning shot was hit by Mangok Mathiang, who in 14 minutes of play....took one shot. That one.

    6) A North Carolina student manager drilled a half court shot on his third try (first two were close) to win $18,000 from State Farm on ESPN's Saturday morning show. We know that all student managers can shoot the ball (yes!!!) because of all the idle time they spend in gyms........shooting basketballs.

It was the third time in five weeks a kid made a halfcourt shot on ESPN.

    5) LSU 81, Arkansas 78-- Winning shot came from Keith Hornsby, whose dad Bruce is a pretty famous singer-- young man shoots 39% behind the arc.

    4) Vanderbilt 86, Ole Miss 77-- When you win eight of your last ten games, you can curse out one of your own players publicly and it goes away....quickly.

    3) Temple 75, UConn 63-- Defending national champs are headed to the NIT unless they make an unlikely run thru AAC tournament-- they've done stuff like that before.

    2) BYU 78, Santa Clara 76-- Last game of night was one of day's better ones. BYU was going to be off the bubble if they lost. Marty Haws made sure they did not lose.

    1) Illinois State 65, Wichita State 62-- Bubble teams all over America are rooting for Northern Iowa against the Redbirds today; if Illinois State wins, one of those bubble slots goes "pop". Northern Iowa and Wichita are already in from the MVC.

National League East preview: Nationals' division to lose

The Nationals won the NL East by a whopping 17 games last season and are the favorites to win the division, NL pennant and the World Series in 2015. Covers Expert Steve Merril breaks down the National League East as we begin our preview of each division in the bigs.

      Atlanta Braves (2014: 79-83, -1803 units, 63-86-13 O/U)

      Division odds: 35/1
      Season win total: 73.5

Why bet the Braves: Atlanta has one of the best closers in baseball in Craig Kimbrel. He blew just four saves all year long so if the Braves get a lead late, he should be able to hold it. They've got some nice pieces at the top of their rotation in Julio Teheran and Alex Wood, plus Nick Markakis is a solid addition to the lineup.

Why not bet the Braves: Shelby Miller is the team's number three pitcher and he's been hard to figure out after up and down years the last two seasons. Getting to Kimbrel could be an issue with the retooled bullpen featuring Jim Johnson, Shae Simmons and Jason Grilli. The offensive bench is extremely young and may not be able to get the job done at the plate.

Season win total pick: Over 73.5 wins

      Miami Marlins (2014: 77-85, -2 units, 83-68-11 O/U)

      Division odds: 5/1
      Season win total: 81.5

Why bet the Marlins: Miami opened up the check book and acquired several new additions, along with giving slugger Giancarlo Stanton a huge contract. Mat Latos solidifies the top of the rotation to go along with Jose Fernandez when he is ready to return. Mike Morse, Dee Gordon and Martin Prado provide depth to a lineup that needed some additions.

Why not bet the Marlins: Latos only made 16 starts last year due to injury. The back end of the rotation features Dan Haren who doesn't really want to be there and Tom Koehler. A thin bench won't provide much offensive help, plus Stanton needs a solid lineup around him to ensure he sees good pitches and isn't just walked all the time.

Season win total pick: Over 81.5 wins

      New York Mets (2014: 79-83, +311 units, 72-72-18 O/U)

      Division odds: 6/1
      Season win total: 82

Why bet the Mets: Second best pitching rotation in the division with Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Bartolo Colon, Jon Niese and Jacob DeGrom. David Wright should be able to bounce back after he struggled last season. Curtis Granderson will be happy with the fences moving closer and Michael Cuddyer is now in the lineup as well.

Why not bet the Mets: Who will be the closer for the team and who is going to provide middle relief? This bullpen has some live arms in Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia, but they are young and inconsistent. Will Matt Harvey stay healthy all year and can DeGrom stave off the sophomore year jinx?

Season win total pick: Under 82 wins

      Philadelphia Phillies (2014: 73-89, -462 units, 83-69-10 O/U)

      Division odds: 100/1
      Season win total: 68.5

Why bet the Phillies: Ryan Howard and Chase Utley still have talent and they are both too good to struggle again this season. Dom Brown and Grady Sizemore combine well with Ben Revere in the outfield. Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee are still solid veterans in the rotation. Jonathan Papelbon is a strong closer and the team has several live arms in middle relief.

Why not bet the Phillies: Who is behind Lee and Hamels in the starting rotation? Right now it looks like Jerome Williams, Chad Billingsley and Aaron Harang are fighting it out with David Buchanan and none of those options inspire confidence. Will Howard and Utley be able to make it through the entire season without injuries? This team might also start trading away veteran talent as the season progresses.

Season Win Total Pick: Over 68.5 wins

      Washington Nationals (2014: 96-66, +1062 units, 77-72-13 O/U)

      Division odds:1/4
      Season win total: 93.5

Why bet the Nationals: This team has the best pitching rotation in baseball with Strasburg, Zimmermann, Gonzalez, Fister and Scherzer. Opponents will struggle to score against Washington all season long. The offensive lineup will benefit with a full season of Ryan Zimmerman. The bench is also talented and deep.

Why not bet the Nationals: The bullpen is weaker without Tyler Clippard. Matt Thornton and Craig Stammen will have to step up their game. Jayson Werth is already banged up and Zimmerman is injury prone. Can the team handle the expectations that come with being the preseason World Series favorites?

Season Win Total Pick: Under 93.5 wins

NHL roundup: Habs' Price stymies Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Voters for the NHL's MVP award generally fall into one of two categories. There are those who follow the language of the award and remain open to anyone winning it and the other camp believes goaltenders already have their own trophy, the Vezina, so they shouldn't win the Hart Trophy as well.

If ever there were ever a season where the two sides could find common ground, this may be it.

Goaltender Carey Price has carried the Montreal Canadiens on his back all season and he did it again Saturday, stopping 29 shots for his seventh shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Arizona Coyotes.

Price helped Montreal salvage the finale of its four-game road trip by allowing two goals or fewer in a league-best 24 starts.

The 27-year-old leads the NHL in goals against average, save percentage, wins (37) and is tied for second in shutouts with Washington's Braden Holtby one behind Pittsburgh's Marc Andre-Fleury.

Montreal needed this game after dropping regulation games in San Jose and Anaheim and falling in a shootout in Los Angeles. Their lead over Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division had dwindled to two points.

Center Lars Eller finally broke the tie late in the second period with a major assist to trade-deadline acquisition Devante Smith-Pelly. Smith-Pelly threw a blind, backhand pass from behind the net onto Eller's stick at the right side of Coyotes goalie Mike Smith.

            Penguins 1, Kings 0 (OT)

LOS ANGELES -- Winger Patrick Hornqvist scored at 1:44 of overtime and Pittsburgh defeated Los Angeles.

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 31 shots and single-handedly took the game to overtime on a night when the Penguins were physically dominated for long stretches. Pittsburgh tied the New York Rangers for second place in the Metropolitan Division with 85 points, though New York has two games in hand.

Goalie Jonathan Quick made 17 saves for Los Angeles, which remained out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference with 17 games remaining.

            Canucks 3, Sharks 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Right winger Radim Vrbata scored twice and had the winning power-play goal at 5:21 of the third period for Vancouver.

Vrbata also scored late in the first period as the Canucks rallied from a two-goal deficit. Center Bo Horvat had the other goal for Vancouver, which is six points ahead of San Jose in the Pacific Division.

Melker Karlsson and center Joe Thornton scored nearly four minutes apart in the first period for San Jose, which remained in fifth place in the Pacific.

            Avalanche 4, Blue Jackets 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Goaltender Semyon Varlamov had 44 saves and Colorado rode a big early lead to victory over Columbus at Nationwide Arena.

It was Varlamov's fifth shutout of the season and the 18th of his career.

The Avalanche, which took a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, got goals from right winger Jarome Iginla, left winger Gabriel Landeskog, center Matt Duchene and right winger Alex Tanguay.

            Lightning 5, Stars 4

TAMPA, Fla. -- As good as Tampa Bay has been this season, the Lightning haven't had success rallying in the final period. But they did just that Saturday night, getting three goals in the third period to beat Dallas at Amalie Arena.

The Lightning trailed 3-2 to open the third but struck for two goals in less than two minutes against the Stars for a rare final-period comeback.

Tampa Bay had been 1-18-2 this season when trailing after two periods. The Lightning remained red-hot at home, with 15 wins in their last 17 games.

            Capitals 6, Sabres 1

WASHINGTON -- Having already lost to Buffalo once this season, Washington vowed to give the NHL's bottom feeders all they could handle.

Sabres call-up goaltender Matt Hackett took the brunt of the payback, leaving the game after allowing four goals on 23 shots at the Verizon Center.

Newly acquired left winger Curtis Glencross recorded a goal and two assists and was joined on the score sheet by center Jay Beagle, left wingers Alex Ovechkin and Brooks Laich and right wingers Joel Ward and Marcus Johansson to lead Washington to its third win in four games and its most decisive win of the season.

            Blues 6, Maple Leafs 1

TORONTO -- Vladimir Tarasenko, T.J. Oshie and Jaden Schwartz each had a goal and an assist as St. Louis defeated Toronto at Air Canada Centre.

Blues' center Jori Lehtera had three assists in the win while Brian Elliott made 23 saves.

Defenseman Chris Butler and centers Paul Stastny and David Backes had the other St. Louis goals.

            Jets 3, Predators 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Forwards Andrew Ladd, Blake Wheeler and Drew Stafford each scored goals, giving Winnipeg the win over Nashville at sold-out Bridgestone Arena.

Winnipeg entered the game with a two-point lead over Los Angeles for the Western Conference's second wild-card spot. The Jets have 16 games left.

Defenseman Ryan Ellis scored for the Predators, whose season-long losing streak increased to six games.

            Panthers 4, Islanders 3(SO)

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Jonathan Huberdeau scored the only goal in the shootout and Florida goaltender Dan Ellis stopped all three shots in the Panthers' win over the Islanders to spoil goalie Michal Neuvirth's debut with New York at BB&T Center on Saturday night.

Center John Tavares, defenseman Nick Leddy and left winger Josh Bailey scored for New York.

Defenseman Erik Gudbranson, center Nick Bjugstad and Huberdeau tallied for Florida.

            Bruins 3, Flyers 2

BOSTON -- Brad Marchand was happy enough to kiss somebody after scoring the tying and winning goals. That's exactly what he did.

"After he scored, he even kissed me in the visor," new Bruin Maxime Talbot said after his pass sent Marchand on his way to the winner.

Added Marchand: "Oh, did you see that there. Yeah, I just said to him, 'I could kiss you right now.' His visor was in the way."

Marchand deflected home a 6-on-4 power play goal with 14.1 seconds left in regulation and then scored the winner with 1:08 remaining in overtime.
