    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Boston Red Sox:

    1) Blake Swihart, C-- Defense is ahead of offense, at this point.

    2) Henry Owens, P-- Was starter for US team in Futures Game LY.

    3) Rusney Castillo, OF-- Cuban defector got a $72.5M contract last summer

    5) Brian Johnson, P-- Was 10-2, 1.75 in 20 AA starts last season.

    12) Sam Travis 1B-- Indiana alum hit .313 in his first pro season.

    17) Sean Coyle 2B/3B-- Hit 16 homers in AA LY, but has been injury-prone.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

    13) Padres signed James Shields to a 4-year deal worth $72-76M; Shields has the most innings pitched (1,785.2) of any pitcher since 2007 (223+ IP a year).

    12) Spurs 95, Pacers 93-- Gregg Popovich gets his 1,000th win as an NBA coach; San Antonio was down 14 points after the third quarter. How would you like to be the reporter who asked the sometimes-surly Popovich what 1,000 wins means to him?

Popovich is the ninth NBA coach with 1,000 wins; he has the second-best winning percentage of those nine. Only Phil Jackson's is better.

    11) RIP, Mr Ed Sabol, founder of NFL Films, who made the NFL a lot more fun for a lot of us. Miking players, coaches and putting highlights to music were strokes of genius that helped the NFL become as popular as it is.

    10) Oklahoma 94, Iowa State 83-- Game was 46-all at half, an entertaining game to see; Cyclones are struggling away from home. Oklahoma has now won five in a row.

    9) Oregon gave football coach Mark Helfrich a new contract for five years, $17.5M; he is 24-4 in two years, with a Rose Bowl win this season.

    8) Helfrich's new QB in 2015 will be Eastern Washington transfer Vernon Adams, which will be interesting; Ducks open the '15 season against Eastern Washington.

    7) Lousy day in sports talk radio; someone in New York sent Knicks' owner James Dolan a nasty e-mail telling him low lousy he is, Dolan sent the guy an angrier e-mail in reply and somehow it all became public. Not only were the NYC shows talking about it, the national media was too. Dolan's a billionaire; just hit the delete key.

    6) Virginia Tech 65, Georgia Tech 63-- Hokies came from behind to win at the end, a game played with great enthusiasm but not tremendous skill. I'm watching this game and I'm like, "This is ACC basketball???" Football has damaged ACC hoop; too many teams, too many smallish crowds at the bottom of this league.

Serious question; where does Syracuse basketball go when Jim Boeheim retires? With probation looming and Boeheim over 70, it could happen sooner than later, but they're in the ACC because of football and the money it generates. The basketball fanbase is spoiled; the next coach has very big shoes to fill. It won't be easy.

    5) Sacramento Kings stupidly fired coach Mike Malone when they were 11-13; now they're 18-32 and changing coaches again, with George Karl apparently headed to northern California. Owner must have a lot of money to spend.

    4) Dan Haren has a $10M contract to pitch this season, and said he only wanted to play for a west coast team, but the Dodgers traded him to Miami anyway. Haren did not say much, but did you really think he'd pass up $10M to make 25-30 starts and travel first-class all summer while living half the time in South Beach? He'll be with the Marlins this season, no surprise to anyone. Miami might be pretty good.

    3) Clippers 115, Mavericks 98-- DeAndre Jordan had 22 points, 27 rebounds with Blake Griffin sidelined. big win for LA, ending a losing skid before the All-Star break. It is very, very difficult to get 27 rebounds in any basketball game.

    2) I'm not a big NASCAR fan but I like watching it now and then because its fun to watch pit crews do their work and the announcers are so enthusiastic and its amazing that cars drive so close to each other while going so fast without crashing all the time.

Plus, the start of NASCAR means one big thing to me: winter is almost over. The last couple weeks around have totally sucked weather-wise; 30 inches of snow, few more nights with temps below zero. Spring training and NASCAR need to start and soon..

    1) It feels strange to follow a baseball off-season where the White Sox, Padres spent a lot more money than the Bronx Bombers. What the hell is going on out there????

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Lightning at Predators
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Nashville Predators (-135, 5.5)

The Tampa Bay Lightning look to finish off a two-game sweep of Western Conference Division leaders when they visit the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. The Lightning, who top the East with 73 points after going 7-2-1 in their last 10 outings, knocked off Pacific Division-leading Anaheim 5-3 on Sunday and attempt to cool off the first-place Predators from the Central. Nashville won four of its last five overall after a brief slump (1-2-2) and boasts 10 victories in its past 11 home games.

The Predators stood in the top five of the league in both scoring offense and defense through Sunday’s games and take on the top offensive team in the NHL. Captain Steven Stamkos leads nine players that have reached double figures in goals with 28 for Tampa Bay, which is 11-4-2 against Western Conference opponents. Pekka Rinne, who leads the league with 30 wins, was rested in the 3-2 shootout win over Florida on Sunday and should be back in net.

            INJURY REPORT:
Lightning - D Jason Garrison (questionable Tuesday, lower body). Predators - D Mattias Ekholm (questionable Tuesday, upper body), D Colin Wilson (questionable Tuesday, upper body).

            LINE HISTORY:
The Predators opened as -130 home favorites and have been bet to -135. The total is set at 5.5 goals.

            ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (34-16-5):
Nikita Kucherov has scored in three straight contests after going through a 13-game goal drought and is second on the team with 20. The Lightning continue to struggle on the power play, which has converted only twice in 27 opportunities over the last eight outings, but is a plus-1.29 – second only to Nashville (1.36) in the league – in 5-on-5 play. Defenseman Luke Witkowski received a chance due to injuries on the blue line and has seven blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in six games.

            ABOUT THE PREDATORS (35-12-6):
Nashville has some injury concerns with defenseman Mattias Ekholm and 17-goal scorer Colin Wilson questionable due to upper-body injuries. The Predators have found a way to get it done all season, though, led by Calder-hopeful Filip Forsberg (team-high 18 goals, 48 points) and Norris Trophy-candidate Shea Weber (36 points, plus-17). Blue liner Roman Josi registered nine points in the last eight games and has 37 on the season, three shy of tying his career high in 2013-14.

            TRENDS:

            * Home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
            * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
            * Lightning are 1-4 in the last five meetings.
            * Over is 5-0-1 in Predators last six home games.

            CONSENSUS:
According to the Consensus, 59 percent of bets are on the Predators.

Andersen sustained an upper-body injury 10:02 into the third period when the goal fell on top of him. He made 17 saves on 22 shots and was replaced by Ilya Bryzgalov in the 5-3 loss.

Lindholm didn't take a shift during the final nine minutes of the third period after sustaining a lower-body injury.

Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf left practice early Monday, but the Ducks announced it was a pre-planned move for him to receive treatment. Getzlaf had missed the previous two games because of a lower-body injury.

The Ducks continue their road trip Tuesday against the Florida Panthers.

Wild continue hot streak with win over Canucks

The Minnesota Wild extended their winning streak to six, by topping the Vancouver Canucks Monday night and are currently one of the hottest teams on the ice.

Minnesota is now 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and just sit three points behind Vancouver for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Wild play their second game in as many nights as they travel to Winnipeg to face the Jets Tuesday night. The Wild are currently +125 dogs, with the Jets on the board at -138.

Coyotes get win as big dogs in Chicago

The Arizona Coyotes pulled off a big upset of the Blackhawks in Chicago Monday night, winning 3-2 in a shootout.

The Coyotes entered the game as +226 underdogs, making it the longest odds they have faced all season, while coming away with a win.

Arizona is right back at it Tuesday night and will be even bigger dogs when they visit the St. Louis Blues. They are currently +259.

NHL roundup: Kings get second straight win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There are signs, finally, that the Los Angeles Kings are warming and ready to make another run to the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Kings beat the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday, riding a big night by the "That '70s Show" line in a 4-3 win in Nationwide Arena.

It marked the first time since Dec. 20 that the Kings, the defending NHL champs, have won back-to-back games. They won 4-2 on Saturday in Tampa Bay.

Left winger Dwight King, center Jeff Carter and right winger Tyler Toffoli -- who wear Nos. 74, 77 and 73, respectively -- each scored a goal and had plus-2 ratings.

Center Jarret Stoll also scored a goal, while goaltender Jonathan Quick had an easy night with 12 saves.

The Kings were outshooting the Blue Jackets 36-14 midway through the third period before the Blue Jackets ended with a flurry.

Blue Jackets left winger Scott Hartnell, playing in his 1,000th NHL game, celebrated with his 13th goal of the season.

              Oilers 2, Devils 1

NEWARK, N.J. -- Right winger Nail Yakupov broke a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal in the second period, and goalie Ben Scrivens stopped 13 shots for his 10th win of the season for Edmonton.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Oilers (15-30-9), the team with the second-worst record in the NHL. The Devils (21-24-9) saw their eight-game unbeaten home point streak end. New Jersey, which owned a 6-0-2 record over the previous eight contests in Newark, failed to collect at least 20 shots on goal for the fifth consecutive home game.

Yakupov, 21, scored his sixth goal of the season with a little more than seven minutes remaining in the second period. Scrivens improved to 2-0-1 lifetime against New Jersey with a goals against average less than 1.00.

Center Patrik Elias scored the 401st goal of his career, all with the Devils, early in the first period.

              Wild 5, Canucks 3

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- The Wild jumped all over Vancouver goalie Ryan Miller, chasing him early on their way to their sixth victory in a row. In doing so, they moved within three points of the Canucks in the race for the last Western Conference playoff spot.

Centers Kyle Brodziak and Jordan Schroeder, right wingers Nino Niederreiter and Jason Pominville, and defenseman Ryan Suter all scored for the Wild, and goalie Devan Dubnyk had 22 saves, improving to 8-1-1 since coming to Minnesota in a Jan. 15 trade.

For the Canucks, right winger Zack Kassian, center Shawn Matthias and defenseman Ryan Stanton had goals, but the Canucks fell to Minnesota for the second time in its past five games. Miller stopped 13 of the 18 shots he faced in the first 27-plus minutes, but was lifted for backup Eddie Lack after Minnesota's fifth goal. Lack had 14 saves in mop-up duty.

              Coyotes 3, Blackhawks 2 (SO)

CHICAGO -- Center Antoine Vermette slipped a backhander past Blackhawks goalie Antti Raanta in a shootout to give Arizona the win.

Vermette's goal, his second of the game, complemented Arizona left winger Lucas Lessio's goal that began the shootout. Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson's shot missed. Chicago managed just one goal in the shootout, a backhander from right winger Patrick Kane.

The end result did not sit well with Blackhawks fans, who believed a shot by center Andrew Shaw with 16 seconds left in overtime crossed the Coyotes goal line for what appeared to be the game-winner. But after a video review that took several minutes, the officials ruled it was not a goal, which resulted in a loud chorus of boos from the home crowd.

                  Tuesday, February 10

Taylor Hall, Edmonton - Late March

Hall is on injured reserve with an undisclosed fracture in his lower body. He could miss up to six weeks.

Tyler Seguin, Dallas - Ques Tues

Seguin is questionable to play against the Bruins on Tuesday after missing practice with the flu.

February is an 'under' month for NHL bettors for past 11 seasons

February is go time for NHL teams. The All-Star break is long gone and clubs are jockeying for spots in the standings over the next two months. And with that uptick in intensity comes more postseason-style play.

Goalies are sharper, lineups are finely tuned, and the blueline is tightened like a belt with defensemen digging in for a battle. This switch in playing style has produced a 19-35-9 Over/Under record so far this February (343-379 O/U on the season). In fact, it’s a trend that has steadily produced more Unders than Overs during the last 11 NHL regular seasons (2004-05 season cancelled due to lockout).

Since the 2003-04 campaign, February hockey has produced a 737-940-125 Over/Under record – a 56 percent lean toward the Under. The number of Under winners has increased to 58 percent over the past five NHL seasons, with teams going 301-421-57 Over/Under between February 2011 and this month. That includes a 31-48-4 O/U mark last season when the Winter Olympics put the breaks on the NHL schedule for most of February.

Oddsmakers don’t really do anything different when it comes to setting totals at this time of year, and are really just keeping an eye on current trends across the league in February. They do look to tighten totals when the schedule hits March, with the postseason hunt getting down to the home stretch. But by then, the betting value could be long gone.

“It still depends on the matchup,” says John Avello, executive director of race and sports at the Wynn Las Vegas. “You have to look at how the teams are playing defensively and what that game means at that point in the season. It still comes down to the individual matchups. We don’t try to do anything different this time of the year. No drastic changes.”

Over the last 11 seasons, NHL games have averaged 5.56 total goals per contest against an average Over/Under number of 5.48 – a surprising comparison considering the rate the Under has cashed in during that span. Those full 11 seasons have averaged 5.62 goals per game. And, over the last seven NHL seasons, only one February (2012) averaged more goals than the season scoring average.

A closer look points out that scoring has been on the decline in February, dropping from 6.3 goals per game in February 2006 to 5.1 goals per game in February 2014 – an overall trend in the NHL from year to year. This season, teams have netted an average of 5.24 goals per game against an average total of 5.29 in February. On the entire schedule, NHL teams are scoring 5.5 goals a night in 2014-15 which pretty much matches up with the most popular number for NHL totals.

This past weekend, NHL games finished 7-9-3 Over/Under and four of the five games on Monday’s board have totals of five goals. Perhaps the window is closing on another Under-rated February in the NHL.
