Plenty of goals makes Monday an over night
There were a total of 55 goals scored in just eight games on Monday night, resulting in the over going 5-2-1.
The only games to go under were the Montreal-Detroit and the Tampa Bay-Los Angeles matchups.
The over has been the slightly worse bet in the NHL this season, cashing 47.9 percent of the time.
NHL roundup: Rangers rally three times, edge Isles
UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Defenseman Kevin Klein scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:32 left in the third period Monday night, and the New York Rangers overcame three two-goal deficits to edge the New York Islanders 6-5 in front of a frenzied sellout crowd of 16,170 at Nassau Coliseum.
The Rangers trailed 1-0 just 11 seconds into the game, 2-0 less than 12 minutes in, 3-1 early in the second period and 5-3 less than four minutes into the third. However, center Derek Stepan and right winger Martin St. Louis scored 1:37 apart to tie the game before the midpoint of the third.
The Rangers earned a fourth straight win and their seventh in nine games. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh scored twice for the Rangers, and center Chris Kreider also scored. Rangers goalie Cam Talbot made 38 saves.
The Islanders had a four-game winning streak snapped. Center Ryan Strome scored twice, and center John Tavares, center Frans Nielsen and defenseman Johnny Boychuk all had a goal apiece. Halak finished with 36 saves.
Canadiens 2, Red Wings 0
DETROIT -- Center Tomas Plecanec's goal with 2:30 left broke a scoreless tie, and Montreal defeated Detroit for its fifth win in six games.
Canadiens goaltender Carey Price made 25 saves for his fifth shutout of the season and the 30th of his career.
Price stopped winger Gustav Nyquist from the bottom of the right circle with 2:48 left. Canadiens left winger Max Pacioretty added an empty-net goal with 10 seconds remaining.
Hurricanes 6, Senators 3
OTTAWA -- Carolina found its way back to the winning track with a victory over Ottawa. The Hurricanes, who lost their previous two games, are now 10-5-3 since the calendar flipped over to 2015.
Scoring for the Hurricanes were centers Andrej Nestrasil and Jay McClement, wingers Nathan Gerbe, Jeff Skinner and Chris Terry and defenseman Michal Jordan. Nestrasil also added two assists for a three-point night. Wingers Erik Condra, Mike Hoffman and defenseman Cody Ceci scored for the Senators.
The Senators lost goalie Robin Lehner and winger Clarke MacArthur when they collided during McClement's goal in the last minute of the second period. Neither player returned for the third.
Jets 5, Oilers 4 (SO)
WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg took another step toward the playoffs with a nail-biting shootout victory over Edmonton at the MTS Centre.
Right winger Blake Wheeler scored the winner in the skills competition to propel the Jets to a much-needed victory. Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson continued his perfect streak in shootouts this
year, turning aside all three Oilers shots. The Jets rookie has stopped all 14 shootout shots this season.
The win improved the Jets record to 30-19-10 and solidified their hold on the first wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Oilers, meanwhile, fell to 16-32-10.
Avalanche 5, Coyotes 2
DENVER -- Center Matt Duchene and right winger Cody McLeod tied a franchise record with goals nine seconds apart and Colorado beat Arizona.
Left winger Gabriel Landeskog and defensemen Tyson Barrie and Nick Holden also had goals for the Avalanche. Duchene added an assist for his 300th career point and right winger Jarome Iginla and defenseman Zach Redmond had two assists each.
Colorado dominated throughout and gave goaltender Semyon Varlamov an easy night. He faced five shots through 40 minutes before being replaced by Reto Berra to start the third.
Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and right winger Mark Arcobello had goals for Arizona. Goalie Mike McKenna had 29 saves in his first start of the season for the Coyotes.
Flames 4, Bruins 3 (OT)
CALGARY, Alberta -- Calgary had already gained a reputation this season as a team that doesn't mind going into the period trailing on the scoreboard.
The Flames proved just that again at the Scotiabank Saddledome, scoring a pair of third-period goals to erase a 3-1 deficit to send the game to overtime where TJ Brodie played hero with two seconds remaining on the clock to give Calgary a win over Boston.
With a shootout looking likely, Brodie directed one at the net and watched as the puck bounced off the top of the cage, off Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask and in to give Calgary its NHL-leading 10th win when trailing after two periods.
The Bruins, meanwhile, continue to slide and have now lost four straight. Boston has three games remaining on a five-game western swing that continues Wednesday in Edmonton.
Canucks 3, Wild 2
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Rookie center Bo Horvat and defenseman Alex Biega, playing in his first NHL game, scored third-period goals as Vancouver defeated Minnesota.
Biega gave the Canucks a 3-1 lead at 11:54 of the third when he boomed a shot from the point that screened Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk couldn't see. Center Henrik Sedin added a goal and an assist for the Canucks.
Right winger Nino Niederreiter scored twice for Minnesota, and center Jordan Schroeder had two assists. The Wild saw their franchise-tying, 10-game points streak (8-0-2) end.
Kings 3, Canucks 2
LOS ANGELES -- Center Jeff Carter's goal late in the third period was the difference, and Los Angeles captured its fifth consecutive victory with a tight decision over Tampa Bay.
Centers Jordan Nolan and Anze Kopitar added goals for the Kings, who swept the season series from the Lightning, the NHL's highest-scoring squad. Los Angeles left winger Dwight King recorded two assists.
The Lightning were coming off a 5-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday, but they lost for the third time in four games. Center Tyler Johnson's goal with 37 seconds left cut the deficit to one, but the Kings held on. Tampa Bay defenseman Nikita Nesterov scored his first NHL goal.
