Evander Kane, Winnipeg - Out Fri

Kane has been placed on injured reserve with an unspecified injury and will miss the next two games at least.

Road teams buck trend, nearly sweep games Thursday

Traveling teams went a stellar 8-1 in NHL action on Thursday. Road teams outscored their counterparts 30-13 in those games, as the hosting teams failed to amass any real offense across the board.

Of the nine home teams Thursday, five failed to score more than one goal and the hapless Buffalo Sabres were shutout.

This has not been a huge season for road teams on the ice, as the traveling team has only won 44.27 percent of games.

McElhinney to start as Jackets host Blues Friday

The Columbus Blue Jackets will task Curtis McElhinney with trying to stop the red-hot St. Louis Blues Friday evening.

Jackets head coach Todd Richard told reporters Thursday that McElhinney would be slated to get the start against the league's hottest team.

The 31-year-old has appeared in 18 games this season (14 starts) and has a 5-8-1 record with a 3.00 goals against average and .907 save percentage.

Presently, the Blues are -165 road faves and the Jackets are +149 home underdogs for the game.

Preview: Ducks (34-12) at Capitals (27-15)

            Date: February 06, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Anaheim Ducks are alone atop the NHL despite missing one of the league's top scorers.

With captain Ryan Getzlaf's status unclear, the Ducks attempt to build on one of their most impressive wins of the season Friday night against the Washington Capitals.

Anaheim (34-12-6) has won eight of 10 games, and scored the first four goals in Thursday's 5-2 victory at Nashville in a meeting between the two teams with the league's most points. The Ducks' scoring barrage came without Getzlaf, who was scratched after aggravating a lower-body injury during warmups.

The All-Star center leads the team with 52 points.

"A lot of guys will have to step up if you lose some of the key guys, and I think a lot of guys showed up and played really well," said Jakob Silfverberg, who scored twice. "And winning here is tough, and we managed to do it, which obviously (we) did great."

The Ducks may need to do that again, as it's not certain if Getzlaf will be available.

Corey Perry, the team leader with 22 goals, is a strong candidate to pick up the slack. The right wing has three goals in two games after coming up empty in five straight.

He has two goals and two assists in five visits to the nation's capital.

Frederik Andersen moved into a tie with the Predators' Pekka Rinne with an NHL-high 29 wins after making 44 saves opposite him to improve to 9-1-0 with a 2.35 goals-against average and two shutouts in 11 games.

Andersen, who has never faced the Capitals (27-15-10), may be starting on back-to-back nights for a fifth time this season. He's won his last two starts in such a scenario, allowing two goals on 42 shots.

Backup Ilya Bryzgalov has won five of his last six games against Washington behind a 1.65 GAA. However, he was pulled with 3:53 left in the second period in his most recent start Jan. 29, giving up six goals in a row in a 6-3 loss at San Jose.

Andersen or Bryzgalov will be in for a stiff test, as Alex Ovechkin has seven goals and eight assists in nine career meetings with Anaheim. The All-Star left wing is tied with the New York Rangers' Rick Nash with a league-leading 32 goals, tallying 10 scores in the last nine games.

Ovechkin came up big Thursday, scoring 49 seconds after Evgeny Kuznetsov in the second period of a 2-1 win at Ottawa.

Washington may need to continue finding success on the penalty kill after holding opponents to 1 for 20 on the power play over the last six games. The unit had allowed five goals on 26 tries over the previous seven games.

The Ducks have converted 8 of 30 power-play attempts in 10 games to match their output from the 22 prior contests.

"You kind of get in a groove," Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik told the team's official website. "You kind of get in a rhythm, actually. You don't want to be short-handed that much but as killers, I think you don't have much time to think about it. You just keep rolling with the guys that are going."

Preview: Maple Leafs (22-26) at Devils (20-22)

              Date: February 06, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The only thing keeping the Toronto Maple Leafs out of last place is a team also falling at terminal velocity that had jumped first.

The Maple Leafs' losing streak, however, no longer involves looking down in the Atlantic Division on another team scrambling for a ripcord.

Now owners of the longest current skid in hockey, the Maple Leafs visit the New Jersey Devils on Friday night with the added pressure of trying to avoid establishing a new franchise-record losing streak.

Toronto (22-26-4) has lost 10 straight for the second time in franchise history after Tuesday's 4-3 defeat in Nashville. The Maple Leafs last dropped 10 in a row to set the record from Jan. 15-Feb. 8, 1967.

As if that didn't cast enough of a reluctant spotlight, interim coach Peter Horachek's team is now at the center of hockey futility after NHL-worst Buffalo ended its 14-game skid with Tuesday's win in Montreal.

"Bowing your head, or putting your lip out or feeling sorry for yourself, has no success rate, zero," Horachek told the Maple Leafs' website. "We have to push ourselves, push our approach to how we want to do things, continue to try to make a difference."

Scoring has been central to the slide with an average of a goal per game and a 2-for-31 mark on the power play after going 0 for 4 against the Predators.

Their road losing streak has also reached 10 games, one shy of another single-season franchise record set in 1988-89. They've also been held to 10 goals on the road skid with points leader Phil Kessel being limited to one assist.

One of the losses contributing to both streaks came 2-1 in a shootout in New Jersey on Jan. 28, which is a part of yet another Leafs' losing streak - three straight to the Devils.

The one glimmer of optimism is that's the only game on any of the streaks that has produced a point in the standings for Toronto.

The Devils (20-22-9) are headed in the other direction. They're seeking a third straight win for the first time since the start of the season and are in the midst of a 4-0-1 stretch after Tuesday's 2-1 home win over Ottawa. They're closing a five-game homestand having allowed just four regulation goals in the first four games.

Thoughts of the postseason are creeping back in, though New Jersey is just a point ahead of Toronto and remains 12 points removed from the Eastern Conference qualifiers.

"As you start gathering points, you start getting some optimism about what ifs?" said Michael Cammalleri, who scored his East-leading seventh game-winner and has goals in consecutive games. "Maybe we are still a little ways away from that still, but we'd like to start almost thinking that way."

Cory Schneider gets the benefit of facing the light-scoring Maple Leafs with his own numbers already trending positively. Schneider is 6-1-1 with a 1.78 goals-against average in his last nine starts, including the shootout win over Toronto.

He's never lost to the Leafs other than in shootouts, going 3-0-2 with a 1.72 GAA.

Counterpart Jonathan Bernier opposed him last month and has a 2.90 GAA over an 0-6-1 span after losing Tuesday. Bernier briefly left the game to receive 12 stitches to his left leg and was replaced by James Reimer, who is 0-7-0 with a 3.08 GAA in his last 10 appearances

Preview: Blues (34-13) at Blue Jackets (21-25)

                Date: February 06, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The St. Louis Blues are on the best stretch in franchise history and that doesn't seem likely to change against the spiraling Columbus Blue Jackets.

Seeking their first eight-game winning streak in over 12 years, the Blues can take over sole possession of the Central Division lead Friday night at Nationwide Arena.

St. Louis (34-13-4) has won seven straight and recorded at least one point in 13 consecutive games (12-0-1). The Blues scored twice in the third period and Jake Allen stopped 23 shots in a 3-0 victory at Buffalo on Thursday.

"It's two points in the bank on the road in the dog days of the season," captain David Backes told the team's official website. "We'll take it and again, we're in the midst of a pretty good run and I think coaching staffs in general tend to push harder when you're in the midst of good runs and don't want you getting complacent. That's understandable and we need to push through and get our game back to where it's dominant hockey from start to finish, the way it was at the beginning of this run.

"When we have that, it doesn't matter who we're playing or where we're playing it's a tough team to play against."

The Blues moved into a tie with Nashville for the top spot in the Central and are two points behind Anaheim for the league lead. A victory Friday would give them eight straight for the first time since a nine-game run Oct. 15-Nov. 5, 2002.

This would seem to be a favorable matchup for St. Louis, which has won 12 of 15 meetings with Columbus (21-25-3), including six of eight in Ohio.

Brian Elliott is 6-0-1 with a 1.98 goals-against average against the Blue Jackets, and he'll likely get a chance to improve on that after Allen's performance Thursday.

Elliott has a 2.03 GAA and two shutouts while going 8-0-1 in the last 10 games.

Vladimir Tarasenko, who has a goal in three straight contests, tallied twice before Backes found the net 22 seconds into overtime of a 4-3 win at Columbus on Dec. 14, 2013.

Tarasenko and Backes had two assists apiece in a 6-2 rout Jan. 4, 2014.

The Blue Jackets are rapidly falling out of playoff contention, losing eight of 11 games and three in a row after falling 4-1 at home to Arizona on Tuesday.

"I don't think anybody here is thinking we're going to quit," said defenseman James Wisniewski. "But we're definitely in a big hole. It's a slippery slope. You don't want to get that losing feeling back in this room."

Ryan Johansen has two goals in six games after netting eight in the previous nine. The center leads the team with 19 goals and has 45 points, tied with Nick Foligno for the team lead.

Johansen has a goal in each of the last two home meetings with the Blues, but had no points and was a minus-3 at St. Louis on Jan. 4.

Foligno has one point in 10 career games against the Blues.

Curtis McElhinney is slated to be back in net after rookie Anton Forsberg made 25 saves Tuesday. McElhinney, getting increased playing time with Sergei Bobrovsky out at least two more weeks with a groin injury, has lost all five career starts against St. Louis with a 5.14 GAA.

Preview: Blackhawks (31-18) at Jets (26-18)

After being shut out in back-to-back games for the first time in eight seasons, the Chicago Blackhawks feel they must improve their overall intensity level.

They've also had a rough time on offense lately with the slumping Winnipeg Jets, who have won the last four meetings and will try to hand the visiting Blackhawks a season-high third straight loss Friday night.

Chicago (31-18-2) isn't using the hassle of a three-game West Coast trip or some ensuing down time in Las Vegas as excuses for losing three of four since the All-Star break.

"We are professionals," said captain Jonathan Toews, who has one point through the first five in a stretch of seven consecutive road contests. "We (have to) show up and play. We (have to) work."

The Blackhawks went 2-1-0 while recording 10 goals to begin that stretch away from home, beating two of the league's top teams in Pittsburgh and Anaheim, but have since been outscored 5-0 in consecutive losses to San Jose and Minnesota. Patrick Kane recorded their last goal at 13:25 of the third period of a 4-1 victory over the Ducks last Friday.

Chicago hadn't been blanked in consecutive games since it happened in three straight Oct. 25-30, 2006 - one season prior to the arrival of Toews and Kane.

Toews wasn't happy with the Blackhawks' overall effort in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to the Wild. Chicago was outshot 43-24, lacked overall team speed and had little to be pleased about aside from Corey Crawford's 40-save performance.

"We didn't deserve it one bit so we've got no one else to blame but ourselves," Toews said. "We've got to look to each other to step it up. We've got to be big boys and play like it in the next one."

Toews has extra incentive to play well in his native Winnipeg, where he had a goal with three assists in a 6-3 victory Nov. 21, 2013, in Chicago's most recent stop there. The Blackhawks have won five straight road games against the Jets' franchise, with 11 goals in two played at Winnipeg.

However, the last four matchups have been in Chicago and the Jets (26-18-9) won them all in regulation - the longest current winning streak by any team against the Blackhawks. Three of those games came this season as Winnipeg outscored them 10-3, holding Kane without a point and Toews to one assist.

Michael Hutchinson was in net for each meeting and recorded 102 saves with a shutout. However, since winning 4-2 at Chicago on Jan. 16 and blanking Columbus in his final start before the break, Hutchinson has a 4.75 goals-against average while losing three straight.

Though the Jets are in wild-card position and three points behind third-place Chicago in the Central Division, they are mired in a season-worst 0-4-1 slide. Winnipeg yielded five goals in four straight before losing 3-2 in overtime at Vancouver on Tuesday.

"Every game is going to be a battle just to be in it," said forward Bryan Little, who recorded a goal and an assist for the second straight game. "That's the way it's going to be played the rest of the year, every night."

After their previous four opponents went 8 for 16 on the power play, the Jets prevented Vancouver from converting any of its six chances.

The Blackhawks are 0 for 6 on the power play versus Winnipeg this season.

Andrew Ladd has three goals and five assists in the past five meetings while fellow ex-********* Dustin Byfuglien has three points in the last two along with Little, who scored in both.

Preview: Penguins (29-14) at Flames (29-20)

                    Date: February 06, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

The Calgary Flames have made it clear they plan to hang around in the Western Conference race in pursuit of their first playoff appearance in six years.

It's been even longer since they've beaten the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Calgary seeks a fourth consecutive victory while looking to end an eight-game skid against the visiting Penguins on Friday night.

The Flames (29-20-1) last qualified for the postseason in 2008-09, but their recent hot stretch has put them in solid position to end that drought. They've won eight of 10, including four of the first five on a homestand that ends with this contest.

Calgary is on the verge of winning a fourth straight for the fourth time this season after Kris Russell, Jiri Hudler and Mason Raymond scored in the second period of Wednesday's 3-1 win over San Jose.

"The further up you can move the better, especially against a team in the West," said Jonas Hiller, who made 28 saves. "They're four-point games. We won't be able to win every game until the end of the year, but we've got to be ready. We have the goal to be in the playoffs and the more games we win the better chance we have."

Russell, a defenseman, scored for the first time in 50 games.

'Obviously, I would have liked it to come a little quicker,' Russell said. 'The character in this room shows when you go through something like that and you continue to keep trying to get better and keep improving and don't let that affect your season."

The Flames last saw Pittsburgh (29-14-8) during their lowest point of the season, when they dropped eight straight from Dec. 6-20. That slump included a 3-1 loss to the Penguins, who haven't lost to Calgary since 2005.

Kris Letang scored in the last meeting, and he assisted on David Perron's goal in Wednesday's 2-0 win over Edmonton as Pittsburgh began a three-game road trip through Canada.

Evgeni Malkin scored in his return from a five-game absence due to a groin injury and helped create opportunities for linemates Patric Hornqvist and Mark Arcobello.

'He generates a lot,' coach Mike Johnston said of Malkin. 'Not only his scoring chances, but with his ability to set guys up and create space for players. I think that line generated more than anybody.'

The Penguins had gone 2-4-2 since Jan. 16 prior to Wednesday as Marc-Andre Fleury went 1-4-1 with a 3.63 goals-against average in six starts during that stretch.

Fleury made 22 saves against the Oilers to earn his first shutout since blanking Colorado on Dec. 18.

'It feels like it's been a while since I got one,' said Fleury, whose seventh shutout matched a franchise record. 'It was a little quiet for me the first two periods, but the third was a bit more one-sided for them. It was nice to finish on a good note.'

Fleury has a 1.50 GAA while winning his last six starts against the Flames after stopping 25 shots in the last meeting. Hiller made 16 saves in that contest and could be in net again.

Hiller, 2-3-1 with a 2.83 GAA in six career starts against Pittsburgh, is 4-1-0 with a 1.47 GAA in his last six appearances.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.....

                              13) Pretty ironic that Spurs' coach Gregg Popovich is applauded for how his teams play and winning four titles while doing things the right way and all that, but this new trend of "recovery days", where star players often sit out one game of back/back nights, is something Popovich popularized with the Spurs.

How would you like to shell out major money to see a game, only to have the star of each team sit out because the teams played the night before? Happens all the time now-- maybe they should give discounts if the stars don't play. Ha!!!!

                              12) There will be 12 running backs just from the SEC alone at the NFL Combine.

                              11) Buffalo Bills signed Richie Incognito, who was banished from Miami after he was fingered in that bullying debacle; now he'll play the Dolphins twice a year. He did not play in the NFL this past season. When he was with the Rams, Incognito owned a car that had 31 TVs in it and I'm not kidding. 31 TVs.

                              10) Chris Paul got docked $25K for criticizing a rookie official, who is also a female; wonder if he would've gotten fined for criticizing a male rookie ref?

                              9) Virginia lost its best scorer Justin Anderson (broken hand) Saturday; he's getting operated on and is expected back in 4-6 weeks. Selection Sunday is five weeks from today. Tough luck for Tony Bennett's team.

                              8) Knicks TV analyst, former NBA star Walt Frazier said on air Saturday night he owns "around 125 suits". He must have a very large closet.

                              7) Noon tipoffs of college basketball games are for TV purposes only; its not normal to have a pregame meal at 8am, meaning you have to go to bed at midnight or so the night before. How many college students go to bed at midnight on Friday night? This leads to lot of lethargic first halves in those noon games.

                              6) Oak Hill Academy is a prep school in Virginia that is a basketball factory; its five starters this year will be playing next year for: Iowa-Ohio State-Purdue-Florida State and Missouri. Pretty good high school/prep school team.

                              5) PGA caddies are mad because the bibs they wear at tournaments have advertising on them that nets the PGA Tour a small fortune, but the caddies still have lousy health benefits. Shockingly, lawyers are now involved.

                              4) Every time I watch the movie Draft Day, I'm amused that Hodges from CSI plays the GM of the Kansas City Chiefs; unusual casting.

                              3) Saw a stat line I've never seen before; in Wednesday's 83-82 loss at Ohio U, the Akron Zips were 0-6 from the foul line for the game, and 18-36 from the 3-point arc. It makes no sense, but thats what happened.

                              2) Best wishes to Providence hoop coach Ed Cooley, who had trouble breathing at the Friars' game at Xavier; he spent the night in a Cincinnati hospital. He left the bench early in the second half and was taken to the hospital during the game.

                              1) Saturday, the Knicks, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Devils all lost, first time all five teams lost on the same day since 1986.
