    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

College basketball conferences #19-24, according to kenpom.com

    24) Big South- Coastal Carolina/High Point are tied for first.

    23) Southern-- Mercer-Wofford-Chattanooga all have one loss.

    22) Patriot-- Colgate is in first; they're 8-12 overall. Not a good league.

    21) Summit-- North Dakota State/Oral Roberts are tied at the top.

    20) OVC-- Murray State-Eastern Illinois is Thursday; battle of unbeatens.

    19) MAAC-- Wide-open league; Iona-Rider-Monmouth tied for first.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) Radio talk shows are funny; the Packers blew a lead Sunday, so now every move they made during the game becomes the one that cost them the game. They should've done this, they should've done that. Every "Joe from Queens" knows better than the guy who makes $5M a year to coach the team. Amazing.

    12) Tom Selleck turns 70 years old next week. I read this Sunday night and it jarred me; I instantly felt older. He did an episode of Magnum PI called "Forty", all about hitting middle age. Hard to believe that was thirty years ago.

    11) Milwaukee traded pitcher Yovani Gallardo to Texas, fueling speculation they are going to sign free agent James Shields.

    10) Kansas 85, Oklahoma 78-- Jayhawks led by 19 at half, Oklahoma went ahead late in game, but couldn't finish the job. Really good game. Oklahoma is one of those teams that could lose in the first round of the NCAAs but they could win a title, too.

    9) 49ers are paying new coach Jim Tomsula $3.5M a year, less than four coaches in the Big 14, where Jim Harbaugh ($5M a year) now works. Niners are a top 5 team in revenue, but Tomsula is the 3rd-lowest paid head coach- this makes sense how?

    8) Some of these nitwit owners might've read Moneyball; Billy Beane isn't a big believer in managers being paid huge money, he sees them more as middle managers. In the NFL though thats just not true at all. 49ers will learn that the hard way.

    7) Clippers are 28-14; Knicks are 6-36. Mike Woodson is an assistant coach in LA now, after being run out of NY last year. Think he is happier now?

    6) Max Scherzer's $210M contract will be paid out over 14 years, even though it is only a seven-year contract. Washington is a prohibitive favorite in the NL East.

    5) Forgot to mention this, but over the weekend, South Dakota lost by 14 at South Dakota State as an 8-point underdog, but only before they took a 20-0 lead!!! How many times does a team fall behind 20-0, then rally to win by double figures?

    4) I screwed up a stat yesterday about #1 seeds making the Super Bowl. Here is the right stuff: this is the third time in the last six years that both #1 seeds made it to the Super Bowl. Before the Saints-Colts Super Bowl, it had been 16 years since both #1's got to the Super Bowl.

    3) Bleachers in Wrigley Field will be closed in April; ones in right field might not be open until Memorial Day, as they refurbish the ballpark. Going to be strange to see games in April with no fans in the outfield.

    2) Lou Amundson started for the Knicks Monday; he is on his 10th NBA team in nine seasons. Amundson and Drew Gooden are the two active players who have both been on ten different teams. The record is 12 teams; Amundson has a shot.

    1) Four different players have played for 12 NBA teams: Tony Massenberg, Chuckie Brown, Joe Smith and Jim Jackson. Smith and Jackson were high draft picks.

Super Bowl line watch: What happened to the 2.5 points?

Like Yogi Berra was purported to have said: When you come to the fork in the road, take it.

Super Bowl betting season is over, and for the first time in history of SB betting lines, there is no money line. All bettors need to do is pick the winner in this one, because oddsmakers have determined that, for now anyway, no one will get or give points when the teams kick off in Arizona in about two weeks.

The big question is what happened to 2.5 points.

Before the AFC and NFC championship games were played on Sunday, there was word that a Green Bay-New England Super Bowl would be a pick ‘em, but if the matchup was Seahawks-Patriots, then Seattle would be laying out 2.5 to New England backers.

That all apparently changed on Sunday, when the Seahawks -- who had been kicking hiney and taking names down the stretch and into the playoffs – for some reason looked very beatable for more than three periods at home against the Packers.

GB’s eventual choke which opened to the door for Seattle to get to the Super Bowl a second straight season perhaps gave oddsmakers pause. And while offshores and Vegas books were still digesting the impact of Seattle’s near-death experience in the rain in the Northwest, the Patriots further muddied the waters by putting the hammer to the Colts in also-sopping Foxboro.

The Pats were no longer the Pats who rose from the ashes against the Ravens the week before when they had to perform their own Great Escape. They were the 2007 Belichick-Brady Patriots who took no prisoners.

What were oddsmakers to do? The Seattle-is-a-bit-better narrative had been crushed in a six-hour Sunday time frame, and if a 2.5-point line had been survived NE’s 45-7 win, there would have been riots in the streets of Vegas as bettors flocked to books to grab the points.

That would have mandated a quick line adjustment as books tried to limit overexposure. Best to bite the bullet quickly, so the result was a split-the-baby line in which no one gets or gives.

      Somewhere Yogi is smiling.

Red Wings blistering since the loss of Howard

Since losing starting goalie Jimmy Howard, the Detroit Red Wings are 5-1. The Wings has gotten stellar play from Petr Mrazek and Tom McCollum, as they have only allowed 13 goals during that span (2.2 gpg).

Detroit has also been turning up the offense as well, the they have averaged 3.5 gpg.

As of this writing, the Wings are -173 when they host the Minnesota Wild Tuesday.

Under bettors profiting during Leafs' losing skid

Goals have not come easy for the Toronto Maple Leafs lately, a trend that continued in a 4-1 losing effort against Carolina Monday evening.

The Leafs have now lost five straight games and have been outscored 16-2 during that stretch. The last time Toronto was only able to muster two goals in a five-game span was in the 1928-29 campaign.

Despite being an awful moneyline play, the Maple Leafs' aforementioned lack of offense has equated to a five-game Under streak. The Leafs will be in action once again Wednesday against rival Ottawa.

Flyers send struggling Emery to the crease vs. Pens

The Philadelphia Flyers will send netminder Ray Emery to the crease Tuesday versus state rival Pittsburgh.

Emery has dropped all five games he's started since the calender turned to January while owning an ugly .743 save percentage in that span. The Pens will counter with their backup goaltender Thomas Greiss.

At the time of writing, books had Pittsburgh as -164 moneyline faves.
