    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

    -- Wm&Mary 76, NC-Wilmington 72-- Seahawks once led by 22.

-- UCF 103, Tulane 100 3OT-- Three Green Wave starters fouled out.

-- Davidson 71, UMass 63-- How is McKillop not a Big East/ACC coach?

-- Boston College 64, Harvard 57 OT-- Eagles were a 3.5-point home dog.

-- Baylor 74, Iowa State 73-- Bears blew 18-point lead, won with 0:07 left.

-- Marquette 53, Creighton 52-- Bluejays are 0-5 in Big East, losing last two games by a point each.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random stuff on a winter day.......

    13) Duke is struggling on defense, but fact of matter is that NC State/Miami went a combined 20-36 from the arc- most teams can't do that in an empty gym. Duke is also always young now, much like Kentucky; hard to develop good chemistry that way.

    12) Las Vegas sportsbooks are concerned that if both NFL favorites win Sunday, they'll get buried by gamblers who pair the favorites in teaser bets. No one is giving the Packers a chance in hell of winning- they're 1-4 on artificial turf this season.

    11) Grand Salami bet is an over/under on the total number of goals scored in NHL each night; so far this season, over is 54-36-1 on the Grand Salami.

    10) NFL coaching news:
Jack Del Rio goes to Oakland, 49ers hire Jim Tomsula from within. Not sure what means for Doug Marrone or Adam Gase, who were both expected to get hired by teams looking for the next great coach.

Buffalo has to pay Marrone $4M no matter what, so no sympathy for him.

    9) Should be noted here that Del Rio was once a catcher on USC's baseball team, when one of the pitchers was a tall first baseman named Mark McGwire.

    8) Syracuse beat Wake Forest in OT Tuesday, but their bench played a total of 26:00; four of their starters played 42+ minutes. They're going to wear down over the next two months and they're not going to last long in March.

    7) Hawks 105, Celtics 91-- Atlanta has won ten games in a row, is 31-8.

    6) I talked yesterday about A's trading for SS Yunel Escobar; forget what I said, he's been traded to Washington for Tyler Clippard, which could signal that the Nats are about to trade Ian Desmond, maybe to the Mets.

No matter what, we can always say the A's went unbeaten while they had Escobar.

    5) Golfer Chris Kirk shot 62 in Kapalua Monday, got drug tested Wednesday. I'm guessing he passed, since no news is generally good news.

    4) Why is the Venezuela Winter League not on TV? People freezing in the north and northeast would definitely be up for some January baseball.

    3) Marcus Mariota declared for the NFL, to the surprise to almost no one. The big question is how good Mariota will be in pro football. Radio host Sean Salisbury says college kids who do nothing but takes snaps out of the shotgun are less likely to be good pros. Salisbury played in the NFL, so he should know.

    2) You watch UNLV's hoop team and you wonder how they would be had Khem Birch stayed in school; he is averaging 13.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg and 2.23 blocks, playing in the D-League. Sure he is getting paid now, but how much? Maybe staying in school and getting drafted in the top half of the first round would've been more lucrative in the long run. Kids don't often think of the long run.

    1) First e-mail came about 45 minutes after Ohio State beat Oregon Monday night; collectibles, all sorts of Buckeye memorabilia for sale, including a helmet signed by Urban Meyer for a mere $130. College sports is indeed very big business.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

      Lookahead spot

The St. Mary’s Gaels have usually been second fiddle in the West Coast Conference, behind basketball powerhouse Gonzaga. This year is no different, with the Bulldogs pacing the WCC at 16-1 SU and the Gaels hot on their heels at 13-3. St. Mary’s has a defining stretch of schedule coming up, starting with a huge home game against BYU Saturday, then a trip to Washington to face the Zags next Thursday.

But before St. Mary’s can make its mark in the conference big guns, it hosts the San Diego Toreros at McKeon Pavilion Thursday. San Diego is 8-8 SU (7-8 ATS) and only has two wins in its first six conference games. However, the Toreros are known for coming after the top WCC teams. In fact, San Diego has covered in nine of its last 12 trips to Morgana and is 6-2-1 ATS in its last nine versus St. Mary’s overall. With the Gaels fixed on those upcoming challenges, they open themselves up for a lookahead at home Thursday.

      Letdown spot

The stars seem to be aligning for a LeBron vs. Kobe showdown when the Cleveland Cavaliers come to the Staples Center to face the Los Angeles Lakers Thursday. LeBron James returned to action Tuesday, as did Kobe Bryant. So, we could get at least one more chapter in this battle of future Hall of Famers. And don’t think that opportunity is lost on either player.

But once the smoke clears in La-La Land Thursday night, the Lakers hop an air bus to Salt Lake City to face the not-so sexy Utah Jazz on the road Friday. It’s a drastic dip in pageantry for Los Angeles, which needs all the motivation it can get these days. Last season, the Lakers took on LeBron and the Heat on Christmas Day – of course, without Bryant – and then lost to Utah the following game. Does the same fate await L.A. in this letdown spot?

      Schedule spot

A five-game Eastern road trip couldn’t come at a worse time for the Vancouver Canucks, who dropped back-to-back home games to Florida and Calgary before opening this stretch of away games with a horrific 5-1 beating in Nashville Tuesday night. The Canucks have just two wins since the New Year and are up against a tough schedule in the coming days.

Vancouver goes all the way across the continent for a showdown in Philadelphia Thursday, then makes the overnight trip to Carolina to play its third road game in four days Friday. The Canucks complete this trek with stops in the Sun Shine State to tackle the Panthers Monday and the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday. Altogether, that’s a string of five games in eight days with plenty of air miles and hotel meals in between. Vancouver has won just once in its last six games away from home heading into Thursday.
