    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Wizards 133, Celtics 132, 2OT-- Wizards were up 16 after the third quarter.

-- Hawks 108, Pacers 92-- Atlanta is a quiet 14-6; pretty good team.

-- SMU 80, UCSB 73 OT-- Gaucho star Alan Williams only had nine points.

-- Brown 77, Providence 67-- Third straight loss for the Big East's Friars.

-- 48 of 53 Green Bay Packers have never played for another NFL team.

-- Jason Hammel gets two years, $20M from the Cubs. What a country.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) Either Baylor/TCU got hosed out of going to the 4-team playoff because the Big X doesn’t have a championship game, which they can’t because it’s a 10-team league (have to have 12 for a title game). Does this mean they add Cincinnati/UConn and go to 12 teams? It’s a question they have to consider, or this could happen every year. Downside to that is they’d have to split their $$$ 12 ways instead of 10. Interesting decision they have.

    12) Looked it up this weekend: Pete Rose got on base 5,929 times in his career, most of anyone in baseball. He never cheated; how does he not get in the Hall of Fame? He wasn’t perfect, he broke rules and paid a very public price for it. Time to move on and give him the plaque he has more than earned.

    11) Jeff Fisher sent out six captains Sunday for Rams’ game in Washington: the six guys the Rams have as a result of the RGIII trade with the Redskins. Wow, talk about thumbing your nose at someone; then he faked a PAT in the third quarter, when the Rams led 15-0 and that worked. Daniel Snyder must’ve had a fairly lousy Sunday.

    10) 49ers are 43-17-1 under Jim Harbaugh, but everyone expects him to leave after this season; keep in mind they were 46-82 in the eight years before he got there. I would be very, very slow to let him walk, but its not my decision.

    9) Big 14, a Midwestern college sports league that also has Rutgers (New Jersey), Maryland and Penn State, announced their 2018 basketball tournament will be in Madison Square Garden, the week before its traditional date. So Michigan-Indiana-Ohio State-Wisconsin et all will be trudging off to the Big Apple for five days of fun? How does this make sense? Will they schedule non-league games for the next week, when all the other big conferences are having their tournaments?

    8) ACC won the first ten ACC-Big 10 basketball challenges, but since the conferences scrambled to accommodate football, the Big 14 is 4-0-2 in the last six. ACC really weakened itself in basketball when it added Virginia Tech, Boston College and to a lesser extent, Miami and Florida State (though Miami is very good this year). Football money seems to speak loudest of all in college sports.

    7) Carolina Panthers are 4-8-1 and a half-game out of first place in the NFC South; that’s how weird this season has been.

    6) In his last five games, Carolina rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin has been targeted 47 times but caught only 21 balls, which helps explain why the Panthers had been struggling to win games; Cam Newton needs him to keep up his high level of play, since he is by far their best option at WR.

    5) Nick Markakis got $44M for four years from Atlanta, which seemed (relatively) kind of low but then we find out he may need neck surgery this winter, which explains a lot. He’s a good player, a dependable player and will help the Braves.

    4) Former NY Knick/US Senator Bill Bradley called Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to tell him that watching the Spurs play rekindled his enthusiasm for NBA basketball. What a compliment!!! Bradley is a brilliant guy who thrived as a shooter for the Knicks team that was two titles in the early 70’s; he’s written several books and if politics wasn’t so TV-centric, could’ve been elected President. He’s not a glad hander or a BS artist, so he never made it as far as he should have.

    3) Houston Cougars fired football coach Tony Levine, so four of 76 bowl coaches won’t be coaching that team in their bowl game this season. Curious to see how high this numbers gets; every high major coach that gets fired sets off a domino effect.

    2) A’s traded Brandon Moss to Cleveland for a AA infielder Monday, 3rd of their seven All-Stars from LY to already be off the team, then sent Jeff Samardzija to the White Sox- they might as well trade Sean Doolittle; who needs a closer when you’re never going to be ahead in the ninth inning? Not going to recognize the 2015 A’s, at least not in spring training or in April. Awesome.

    1) Packers 43, Falcons 37-- In their last six home games, Green Bay outscored its opponents 184-30 in the first half, an average of 31-5.

NFL Opening Line Report: First place on the line as Cowboys visit Philly

We’re through 14 weeks of the NFL season, and the playoff chase in both conferences still has a whole lot of uncertainty – for the teams involved, and the bettors who wager on them.

Several Week 15 matchups could help clear up the picture, including Dallas and Philadelphia getting together just two weeks after their Thanksgiving clash.

The Eagles (9-4 SU, 8-5 ATS) rumbled to a 33-10 road victory as a 3-point road underdog in that contest to break a tie with the Cowboys atop the NFC East. However, on Sunday, Philly bowed down to Seattle 24-14 as a 1-point home dog.

Dallas (9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS) comes into this game with a little extra rest, having played back-to-back Thursday games – against the Eagles, then last week in a 41-28 road victory over Chicago laying 4 points.

John Lester, senior lines manager for BookMaker.eu, doesn’t expect a big change from two weeks ago.

“Well, we’re back to where we were two weeks ago -- first place on the line in a bitter NFC East rivalry,” Lester said. “Personally, I don’t see the outcome being much different than the first meeting, even with the extra time for the Cowboys. They just don’t have the personnel defensively to match up with the Eagles. Dallas is going to have to match scores to stay in it.”

San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks (-8.5)

San Fran has been to the last three NFC championship games, and a Super Bowl two seasons ago. But the Niners are practically out of the playoff chase. San Francisco (7-6 SU, 6-7 ATS) fell to Seattle 19-3 on Thanksgiving as a 1-point home fave, then laid a complete egg Sunday as an 8-point home chalk against lowly Oakland, losing 24-13.

Seattle (9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS), the defending Super Bowl champ, appears to be hitting its stride just in time. The Seahawks have won six of seven SU (4-3 ATS), including Sunday’s 24-14 victory at Philadelphia laying 1 point.

“It’s going to be very difficult for the Niners to get up for this one, coming off the devastating upset at Oakland and knowing they are essentially out of the playoffs. Not to mention all the external distractions,” Lester said. “Meanwhile, Seattle certainly looks like it has regained its Super Bowl form. We had to move a full point higher after initially opening at -8.5.”

Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers

The defending AFC champion Broncos (10-3 SU, 6-7 ATS) are trying to push closer to a first-round playoff bye and put a stranglehold on the West Division. On Sunday, Denver held off Buffalo 24-17, failing to cash as a 9-point home favorite.

The Chargers (8-5 SU, 6-7 ATS) put themselves in a precarious spot by blowing an early 14-3 lead against New England on Sunday night, failing to score the rest of the way in a 24-4 loss as a 4-point home pup.

“The Denver defense is starting to come around. I still don’t think it’s great, but it is performing better overall,” said Lester, who hadn’t yet set a number on this game. “Sharps and squares weren’t afraid to bet against San Diego last week, and I doubt anything will change this week. That said, after this Sunday night performance by the Chargers, we’ll probably make the Broncos around 6-point chalk.”

Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots

New England (10-3 SU, 8-5 ATS) has been on fire for two months now, with the only blemish a 26-21 loss at Green Bay during an 8-1 SU and 7-2 ATS streak. On Sunday night at San Diego, the Pats spotted the Chargers a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter, then scored 21 unanswered points the rest of the way for a 24-14 victory giving 4 points.

Miami (7-6 SU and ATS), firmly in the playoff mix a couple of weeks ago, is now on the brink after a 28-13 home loss to Baltimore laying 3 points.

“The Pats may want to alter their defensive plan of attack after Baltimore exposed Miami’s O-line this weekend,” Lester said. “Also, Miami losing safety Louis Delmas (knee) should create more opportunities for New England through the air. It’s a big loss. The Dolphins always seem to have a good game plan in this matchup, so I expect some sharps will be looking for the dog at more than a touchdown.”

Which college football teams were the best/worst bets this season?

The college football regular season closed with a bang this Saturday. Conference crowns were handed out, the Big 12 still didn’t have a title game, and the inaugural College Football Playoff pictured was inked, along with all the other postseason matchups.

Before we prepare for a month of wall-to-wall bowl wagering, let’s look back at the best and worst bets from this past college football season.

        Best bet

TCU Horned Frogs: 11-1 SU, 10-2 ATS

Apparently no one on the College Football Playoff committee is a football bettor - or would admit it. If there was one red-blooded bettor among the suits, Texas Christian would have cracked the Final Four instead of playing Ole Miss in the disappointment bowl as a 3.5-point favorite.

The Horned Frogs had only two blemishes on their ATS record this past season. They failed to cover as 3.5-point favorites in a 31-30 road win at West Virginia and nearly crapped the bed against Kansas of all teams, squeaking out a 34-30 road win as 28-point chalk in Lawrence.

There was another 10-2 ATS team in college football this year – the Western Michigan Broncos. However, we gave TCU the nod since they were up against the points in all but two games this season – vs. Oklahoma and at Baylor – and WMU fell apart at the end of the year with a SU and ATS loss to Northern Illinois.

        Worst bet

UConn Huskies: 2-10 SU, 2-10 ATS

Some will want to hang this albatross on Florida State, which went 3-10 ATS despite an undefeated record. But for the sake of profits, Connecticut was behind FSU in the ATS rankings.

The Huskies finished at the bottom of the very shallow AAC – just ahead of 1-11 SMU, which went 4-8 ATS on the season. That lone win by the Mustangs – you got it – came in the season finale against the Huskies, winning 27-20 as 13.5-point favorites. The sheer fact UConn was favored by almost two touchdowns is baffling.

Connecticut was a favorite only three times – vs. FCS Stoney Brook, at Army, vs. SMU – and lost by an average of just over two touchdowns per game. The two games the Huskies did manage to cover in came in back-to-back outings: a 31-21 loss at East Carolina as 27.5-point pups and a 37-29 win vs. Central Florida as 8.5-point home dogs.

        Best Over

        Ohio State Buckeyes: 12-1 SU, 11-2 O/U

Want to know just how good an Over bet the Buckeyes where this year? They didn’t even need Wisconsin to score a single point in the Big Ten Championship, topping the total all by themselves in the jaw-dropping 59-0 win this past weekend.

That was just the cherry on top of the Over sundae for Ohio State. It averaged 45.2 points per game on the season and scored 50 or more points in six of its 13 games. Not even losing two starting quarterbacks to stop the Buckeyes offense, with third stringer Cardale Jones passing for 257 yards and three touchdowns against the Badgers. Braxton who?

Ohio State’s defense wasn’t up to the usual standards of Big Ten football, giving up more than three touchdowns per game. The Buckeyes’ yards against weren’t terrible – ranked 15th in the country – but opponents that did crack the OSU 20-yard line scored a touchdown on 70.27 percent of those red-zone trips. Oddsmakers have set the total at 58 points for Ohio State’s date with Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

        Best Under

San Diego State Aztecs: 7-5 SU, 1-11 O/U

The Aztecs were nearly perfect for Under players if not for a 38-29 loss at Boise State, which finished the season 9-4 O/U. The Broncos scored 21 fourth-quarter points against SDSU, which allowed just 6.9 points per fourth quarter on the season, and trumped the 56.5 points total.

San Diego State’s 12 games had an average total of 53.6 points, while its games produced ab average of 45.9 points – a difference of 7.7 points. In the razor-thin world of total betting, that near eight points separation might as well be the Grand Canyon.

The Aztecs' rushing game marched for 218.6 yards an outing and helped SDSU chew up 31:28 in time of possession – 30th in the country. San Diego State has an interesting bowl game with Navy, which does nothing but run, in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23. The Middies’ triple option helped post a 4-6 O/U mark heading into their annual showdown with Army next week.
