-- Chiefs covered their last six games as a road favorite.

-- Chicago is 2-12-2 in its last sixteen home games.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random post-vacation thoughts........

13) If you're in Las Vegas for a football Sunday, go to the Westgate Hotel, watch games in the theater there; can see all the games easily, bet on them and its a relaxing, almost quiet atmosphere. Plenty of room. I highly recommend it.

Meanwhile,, now that I'm back home, lets catch up on some things......
12) Damn I hate cold weather; get off the plane and its 25 degrees out, this after a week in the desert, where it was in the low 40's some nights. Feel bad for the people in Buffalo, who were already socked with a big winter storm. No bueno.

11) Giancarlo Stanton got $325M for 13 years from the Marlins; now that they've done that, how about moving the 20-foot tall CF fence in from 418 feet away, so that your best player doesn't look disgusted when he hits shots 410 feet that get caught? Its hard to believe Stanton will play his whole career as a Marlin....

10) Peyton Manning has played 42 regular season games with Denver: they scored 30+ points in 30 of 42 games, less than 20 twice; Sunday against the Rams and a 17-9 win at Kansas City couple years ago. Great job by Gregg Williams' defense Sunday.

9) Kentucky 72, Kansas 40-- This raises the question of whether Wildcats will lose a game, especially in a weakened SEC where Mizzou lost to UMKC, Ole Miss lost to Charleston Southern, Auburn lost by 30+ at Colorado.

8) Adrian Peterson is done for this season; lot of these athletes have kids out of wedlock with multiple women, so now they have to be wary of ex-girlfriends they had kids with who are embittered that the guy has moved on. Does Peterson still have to pay child support now that he is not getting paid anymore this year?

7) Russell Martin gets $82M for five years from Toronto. Martin is 31, he grew up in Montreal and the Blue Jays need a catcher. He made $8.5M this past year. Always risky to give a 30+-year old catcher big money-- this hurts the Pirates.

6) Miami 69, Florida 67-- Terrific win for Jim Larranaga that will speak very loudly on Selection Sunday. This rewards Miami for having PG Angel Rodriguez sit out last year when he could've played after transferring from Kansas State, but last year Miami wasn't as good. Now this year, the Hurricanes have a shot at a very big year.

5) Westgate Hotel is switching from Coke to Pepsi, so they were out of 20-ounce bottles of Coke this week, not good for me. Wonder how much money that is worth to Pepsi, getting one hotel like that to switch. Keep in mind they have several restaurants in the hotel, including a Pizza Hut and a great deli in the back of the sportsbook.

4) Rockets-Thunder played a game Sunday where no player in the game shot 50% or higher from the floor. None of them. Last time that happened? 1986.

3) Watched Wofford's win over Iona in the ESPN hoop marathon; wonder how much that helps either the Terriers or the weakened Southern Conference, which has been hurt badly by defections (Davidson/Charleston/Elon) the last couple years.

2) In Ken Whisenhunt's last 58 games as a head coach, which is 3.5 years, he's used nine different starting QB's. Nine. Thats a lot.

1) Over is 25-9 in NFL primetime games. No idea why, but it is what it is.

Letdown spot

The Virginia Tech Hokies got one of multiple monkeys off their backs last weekend, knocking off a ranked Duke team 17-16 as 3.5-point road underdogs in Durham. The win snapped a three-game slide and was just the Hokies’ third win since the middle of September. It also served as a splash of cold water on Frank Beamer’s blazing-hot office chair. Virginia Tech has a rivalry game with Virginia in two weeks, setting up the dreaded “lookahead letdown” spot when it travels to Wake Forest as 15-point road chalk Saturday.

The local media in Blacksburg is feeding into this situational spot, bombarding Beamer with questions about the Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Cavaliers and ignoring the challenge the Demon Deacons present this weekend – despite the coach’s best efforts to keep his team focused on Wake Forest. Virginia Tech is developing a bad habit of suffering a letdown after beating ranked opponents. It lost to Maryland after stunning No. 14 Miami last season and fell to East Carolina following its upset over No. 8 Ohio State back in Week 3.

Lookahead spot

The Toronto Raptors have picked up where they left off last season, parlaying a long-awaited playoff appearance into a strong 8-2 (7-3 ATS) start to the schedule. Toronto has a busy week with a string of three games in four nights starting Wednesday with a home stand against the Memphis Grizzlies and finishing with a massive matchup with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers Saturday. In between those two games are the lowly Milwaukee Bucks Friday night.

Milwaukee is on the rise, with a big win at Miami Sunday giving Bucks backers their seventh ATS win in the last 10 games, heading into Tuesday’s date with New York. Milwaukee is cut from a similar cloth as the Raptors, depending on a stingy defense that is giving up just 92.6 points (fourth in NBA) on 41.8 percent shooting (third in NBA) per game. With Toronto eager to measure itself against the Cavs Saturday, the Raptors could get caught looking past the Bucks Friday.

Schedule spot

Normally, college coaches are begging their players to get to bed early. However, this week, it may be in Phil Martelli’s best interest to have his guys burning the midnight oil. Martelli’s St. Joseph’s Hawks make a cross-country trip to Gonzaga Wednesday, part of the preseason NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament. That game goes at 8 p.m. local time in Spokane – 11 p.m. back in Philadelphia.

The Hawks don’t have much down time to prepare for the grueling travel sked. St. Joe’s took a 52-49 win at Drexel Monday, leaving Tuesday to travel to Washington and settle in before hitting the floor at McCarthey Athletic Center, where the Zags have covered in five straight home games. The frantic cross-country travel and late tip could have the Hawks gassed before the whistle even blows Wednesday.

Ice cold Rangers look to reverse trend

The slumping New York Rangers are a poor 3-8 in their past 11 games. It has been goaltending and defense that has been the Rangers achilles heel this season, as they team has allowed four or more goals in five of their past 11.

The New York will welcome the Philadelphia Flyers to Madison Square Garden Wednesday.

Blues continue rotation, Allen to start Wednesday

The goalie rotation has been working for the St. Louis Blues so far this season and they are sticking to that. Jake Allen will get the start Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens after Brian Elliott started the previous two.

Since Nov. 1, the Blues have been alternating goalies with each one getting two starts at a time.

Allen is 5-1 with a 1.67 GAA and a .933 SV% this season.

Oilers offense stymied by Canucks defense

The Edmonton Oilers have had a time trying to top the Vancouver Canucks. Over the past eight contests, four of which were this season, the Oilers are 2-6.

Though the overall score during that period looks close, 26-18 for the Canucks, but Edmonton has scored two goals or less in five of those eight contests.
