    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 11 rapidly approaching........

-- Dolphins are 9-18 in last 27 games as a home favorite.

-- Colts covered eight of last nine, coming off a bye.

-- Carolina's last seven divisional games stayed under total.

    -- Arizona is 16-4-1 in last 21 non-divisional games.

-- Tennessee covered only three of last 17 games.

-- Chicago is 2-12-2 in its last sixteen home games.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) 24 of the 32 NFL teams have a #1 draft pick playing at offensive tackle; none of Carolina's tackles were even drafted, which helps explain why Cam Newton is getting treated like a pinata every week.

    12) Rising star in ESPN's studios; Louis Riddick, who is on during the day; he offers strong opinions and he makes sense-- he should be on the Sunday morning show, if their Sunday morning show wasn't more nonsense than good football stuff.

Colts' backup QB Matt Hasselbeck worked the Rams-Cardinals game Sunday and he was very good. If he quit playing right now and signed with CBS, he'd be their second best analyst, behind Dan Fouts.

    11) Since 2010, NFL home teams that played previous the three games on road are 5-13-1 vs spread, 2-6 if favored.

    10) Since 2009, NFL road teams who played previous three games at home are 31-22 vs spread, 9-7 if favored.

    9) There were 11 NHL games Tuesday; Dallas was only road team to win. There was a 44-16 goal differential in favor of the home teams.

    8) Phil Mickelson is now an assistant golf coach at Arizona State; his brother is the head coach-- think that helps their recruiting?

    7) UCLA made its first ten 3-pointers in its scrimmage with UNLV last weekend; first half was all Bruins, but the young Rebels played better after that.

    6) Sacramento/Charlotte were up both up 20+ points on road Tuesday but neither team won. Kings couldn't even cover as a 7-point underdog in Dallas.

    5) Interesting tidbit from Al Michaels' new book: He once worked as a booker on The Dating Game, the 60's game show where a single went on and interviewed three prospective dates, without seeing any of them before he/she made their choice.

    4) Mark Few is 403-100 at Gonzaga, the only active D-I hoop coach whose career winning percentage is over 80%. Few has one of his best teams this season.

    3) Alabama won at LSU but stayed the same in the latest rankings? Oy.

    2) If I ran ESPN, Rece Davis would be my #1 college football guy.

    1) Disappointing news from back home, where the bowling alley I grew up going to has been sold and will be used as a warehouse for the many Asian supermarkets that are now open in my hometown. Had a lot of fun in that building.

NFL line watch: Raiders-Chargers a feast for Over bettors

      Spread to bet now

New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts (-2.5)

The Patriots (7-2) have risen to the top of many power rankings but really don’t have a signature road win. Getting this one would be a huge boost, especially with post-Thanksgiving games at Green Bay and San Diego still to come. Both the Pats and Colts (6-3) are coming off their bye week and should be rested and prepared. The line opened at Indy -2.5 and figures to sit there barring any news involving Tom Brady or Andrew Luck. Two things to look for here are New England’s inability to run the ball effectively since Stevan Ridley went down, and the Colts’ propensity to turn the ball over. Unless some sharps throw in some last money, this line should set in cement, so bet it now whichever way you want to go.

      Spread to wait on

Houston Texans at Cleveland Browns (-3)

The Browns are in the conversation again for the first time in decades, and the Dog Pound is giddy at the thought that Cleveland could actually win the AFC North. The line in this one opened at Browns -3 and bettors have been pounding Cleveland over a Houston team that has lost four of its last five. The Texans have won twice on the road, but they came at Oakland (season opener) and at Tennessee. If the money remains on Cleveland through mid-week, books may be forced to move it to 3.5 to balance things out. So if you like Houston at 3.5, hang on a bit and you might get your wish by Thursday or Friday. Or perhaps even a few hours before kickoff.

      Total to watch

Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers (44)

The Chargers have had a week off to think about that embarrassing 37-0 defeat in Miami, and figure to have spent some time working on their offense. Right on cue the winless Oakland Raiders come to down, fresh off their own 41-17 loss to the Broncos this past Sunday. Rest assured San Diego won’t be shut out for a second straight game. In fact, at minimum the Chargers should be in the mid- to high-30s against an Oakland team that is on the fast track to an 0-16 season. This one should be a feast for over players, assuming the Raiders can reach the end zone once or twice.

Kessel the key to Maple Leafs success

To say Phil Kessel has meant a lot to the Toronto Maple Leafs this season may be an understatement. The Leafs are 7-1-1 when Kessel has a point this season, but only 1-4-1 when he fails to put a mark on the score sheet.

Kessel, who is tied for third in the NHL in points with 19, was held pointless and had a -2 rating in the previous game against the Bruins this season.

Toronto welcomes the Boston Bruins to the ACC Wednesday.

Sharks put Stalock on IR, recall Grosenick

The San Jose Sharks placed goaltender Alex Stalock on injured reserve and recalled goalie Troy Grosenick from Worcester of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.

Stalock, 27, has a lower body injury. He has gone 2-2-1 with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage in five games this season.

Grosenick, 25, has gone 7-2-1 with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage in 10 games played for Worcester. He currently leads the AHL in wins and ranks second in minutes played (616).

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound native of Brookfield, Wis., signed with San Jose as a free agent on April 8, 2013.

Bruins say starting goalie game-time decision

The Boston Bruins have announced that they will not announce their starting goalie until game-time Wednesday.

Starting goaltender Tukka Rask played Tuesday and has also played the last four straight for the Bruins. Rask has a 2.44 GAA with a .909 SV% this season while backup Niklas Svedberg has a 1.66 GAA and .940 SV%.

The Bruins travel to Toronto to play the Maple Leafs Wednesday.

Zach Parise, Minnesota - Doub Thurs

Parise has been sidelined with a concussion and is unlikely to return for Thursday's game against the Sabres.
