House Postpones Vote on Payroll Tax Cut Extension
After a long debate on Monday, the House Republicans postponed a vote on the payroll tax cut extension which was proposed and approved by the Senate over the weekend. Instead, it is likely a committee will be set up which will bring back the Senate to Washington.

According to reports, Republican lawmakers are nearly unified in their decision to defeat any proposal by the Senate and are willing to continue to battle it out as to whether extend the tax cuts at all or let them expire.

At stake are 160 million workers who would see a 2 percent rise in their taxes effective January 1 if the payroll tax cut bill expires, along with cuts to Medicare funding and unemployment benefits.

GOP Agree to Tax Cut Extension

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 | Posted by Erin Rice

Receiving strong pressure from President Barack Obama and their own party leaders, House Republicans agreed to a two-month extension on the payroll tax cut that was set to expire on January 1 and would have raised taxes for nearly 160 million American people.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) briefed rank and file House Republicans over conference call late Thursday evening. Unlike the extended call on last Saturday, where Republican lawmakers were allowed to voice their opinion, the call by Boehner on Thursday was brief and lawmakers were only allowed to listen.

“On Jan. 1, no American worker will see an increase in their taxes,” Boehner said at a hastily arranged press conference. “Middle-class families and small businesses are struggling, and they’re making sacrifices, and I think this agreement will help our economy.”

Seems like some Republican on this site said that all Democrats wanted to do was raise taxes. Funny how they fought for a no raise in taxes for the middle class. Yes, they do want a tax increase for the top 10% in this Country. So if you don't make $250k or more then you should be for the tax increase. If not then only you can answer as to why you want the rich to keep getting richer and while the middle class erodes. Eventually its going to be the Rich and the Poor.

Monte, people should be able to get rich and not hand their money over to people that choose not to work. The system is flawed, the govt is flawed. It's really surprising to me that there's not more common ground, but I think religion plays a huge part. Being conservative is great, everyone should be, and giving out money to veterans or people that can't work is great also, but lots of people choose not to work because they can get free money. Anyway I hate politics, i want everyone to do well, I want to be able to swim in nice oceans and eat meat that isn't going to kill me. Seems pretty basic to me, but people that think that world is coming to an end don't care about those things. Anyway, merry Christmas hopefully these jokers will figure it out.

Please tell me you heard this on the news or read it in one of your biased newspapers. Surely you don't believe that? And what exactly do you consider poor? I live paycheck to paycheck but my bills are always paid and my kids never do without. I always have groceries in the fridge and I'm able to live a decent life. I know people that make $250,000 a year who can't say the same thing as I just did. So really what do you consider rich or poor?

how exactly is $250k rich? better question isnt a "millionaire's tax suppose to be on "millionaire's"??? call it $250,000 tax. It's not a "millionaire's" tax. The simple fact is the gov't spends way to much money on pathetic social programs that do not work.

              Education gets billions its terrible
Gov't agencies like FEMA EPA DEC IRS USPS get billions and are worthless.
Welfare system is a joke and a complete failure just keeps the poor on the gov't tit.

and on and on. Fact is top 10% pay more in taxes to support the losers who do nothing!!! Life's tough get a job!!!!

monte let me ask you this......when is enough enough? how much should rich or so called rich pay in taxes?

I personally pay between taxes on the following:

              Fed
              state
              SSI
              local
              sales
              property
              school
              401k (optional)

approx 60% of my gross income is gone. on some form of taxation. only exemption is 401k cause i "choose" to deduct that.

so lets say i make $150,000 a year.

$150,000x.50= $75,000 a year to some form of taxes or another.

I took 10% off the 60% to account for my 10% to 401k.

so if i made $150k im actually netting $75k per year.

There are 52 weeks in a year.

              $75,000/52= $1442.30 a week!!!!

Is $1442.30 a week rich? Some people may. I sure dont think so.

my point being is why should i or anyone else for that matter pay 50% of there earned income in taxes of any form?

49% of the slobs and useless pay ZERO ....that's right ZERO federal taxes!!!!! Think about it!!!!

Bottom line is what % is fair enough??

Perfectly put Dimer... could not say it any better. The government needs to learn to cut out some of the crap they make us pay for currently. Then and only then will our national debt start to go down and people can actually get paid what they rightfully earn.

However, once the government starts to do these things like cutting some programs out, you will get all these people whining about the fact that the program has been cut and you will see a public outcry for the program to be put back in place. Then those same people will be crying that they pay too much in taxes or the government needs to find a way to save some money. If the government tries to please the public it will be a lost cause that results in saving nothing and nothing truly ever getting accomplished. It is the American citizens who really prevent any positive change from happening, not the government. The government needs to please the public in order to keep their own damn jobs.

Monte, the first few posts here seem to imply that the House Republicans were AGAINST the P/R Tax Holiday extension, and if that IS the implication, it is profoundly BS. You DO realize, don't you, that the House sent a bill to the Senate on the 17th (I think that is the date), that extended the P/R Tax holiday through 12/31/2012. The only sensitive rider to that bill was that BO had to make a decision on the Keystone Pipeline aproval by 2/27/12....And, that dwarf Harry Reid REFUSED TO EVEN BRING THE BILL TO FLOOR!! The Senate then wrote this two month holiday BS bill, passed it and sent it to the House where they initially refused to introduce and pass it...Why??? Because a two month extension is pure political theater, is ineffective, but most importantly, he knew it was SO stupid (two months???) that the House would not immediately pass it.

So, again, if the implication is that the House didn't want to extend the Holiday, your posts are misleading at the very best, and flat out untrue at worst....For the record only.
