  • The politics of the unemployment rate — in one chart!

We’ve long argued that the politics of the economy — for most voters at least — can be boiled down to a single number: the monthly unemployment rate.

Yes, economists will roll their eyes at this too-simple calculation — nerds! — that misses the real underpinnings of the relative strength (or weakness) of the American financial system.

But, for the average voter who doesn’t have the time (or the inclination) to dive too deeply into the numbers, the unemployment rate — or, more specifically, the trend line of the unemployment rate over time — is the key indication of whether things are getting better or worse with the economy.

And that’s why today’s November jobs report is such good news for President Obama

Since a picture (or a chart) is worth 1,000 words — and with apologies to our chart-loving colleague Ezra Klein — here’s a look at the unemployment trend line since President Obama took office. (Big thanks to Matt McDonald at Hamilton Place Strategies for putting this together for us.)

What’s clear from the chart is that there has been a (pretty) steady decline in the unemployment rate since this time last year.

Republicans have and will continue to argue that the lots of lots of people — more than 300,000 — have simply stopped looking for work, which makes the drop in the unemployment rate misleading.

True enough. But, for Obama to win re-election next year he desperately needs some evidence that the economy is starting to move in the right direction. For at least the next month, the chart above allows Obama to make just that case.

Nice propaganda there....Check back here later today after I find and post the chart that reflects unemployment if we add back in the 1.36 million Americans who have involuntarily left the workforce (and therefore NOT included in the unemployment rate) because they couldn't find a job and ran out of 99 weeks worth of UI benefits since his HighnASS took office.

Umreb, i was going to comment last week, but i just said no....

Come on with this unemployment, it's so high but sooner or later it's going to go down without adding a job, time does run out after 99weeks of free handouts

I do agree people fall of the unemployment because their benefits ran out. However, the chart starts by showing what Obama inherited from Bush and it does show that jobs are turning around. However, we are still very far from being anywhere close to where we need to be at.

Like I said we need to take Clinton's shitty NAFTA and cut those jobs that big corporations can send over seas into half. And that damn dumb bill about giving South Korea jobs is bullshit too as we need them here.

So is the trade gap between us and China. That needs to be fixed as well as it's another Bullshit deal that are Government needs to address, but since big corps own the government it won't happen.

For one thing I don't get why you guys are trying to argue with me. I've came out before and stated there are things the Democrat party have did wrong. I haven't seen any of you Republicans state that a republican has did anything wrong. I call that one sided with blind folders on.

I'll say it again I like Ron Paul. I don't like the fact he wants to get of the health care reform, because that is bullshit. If he want's to get rid of it then create a Government option. People like me would be paying way more if it wasn't for the health care reform.

So my point is if Ron Paul was going against Obama I may just vote Ron Paul.

That Obama sure knows how to plan a vacation however. The latest is a quick 17 day trip to Hawaii. We are in the best of hands with this guy I tell ya. And the wife just had to leave earlier and suck some more money out of us. He wants us to go green but him and the wife just love to travel separatea and use more planes, more security, and more of my money.

Good thing the country is in good shape and he is able to take these long vacations with no worries.

Before President Obama and Washington rejoice over the newly announced decrease in the unemployment rate they need to face a harsh reality: America is still not gaining jobs.

In fact, the main reason unemployment “fell” is because the workforce has shrunk.

The Bureau of labor statistics reported this morning that the unemployment rate fell by 0.4% to 8.6%—what the Obama Administration would call a success. However, one key fact was left out of this report: the work force has decreased immensely since President Obama has taken office.

Those who have given up looking for jobs are not included in unemployment statistics.

“We lost the equivalent of the entire city of Pittsburgh, PA in the labor force last month alone. This is unacceptable,” Reince Preibus, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, announced via twitter.

The Associated Press reports that, “more than 300,000 people stopped their job searches last month and were no longer counted as unemployed. That contributed to the drop in the unemployment rate. The rate could rise in future months if they resume looking.”

This is the tragic side of the stalled Obama “recovery”: people are losing hope.

Also contributing to the decrease in the unemployment rate is the increase in demand for seasonal jobs during the holidays. “More than half the jobs added last month were by retailers, restaurants and bars, a sign that holiday hiring has kicked in,” AP reported.

The BLS report claims largest job gains in the private sector came from retail trade (+50,000), professional and business services (+33,000), leisure and hospitality (+22,000), and health care (+17,000).

Although this sounds great, it is important to compare the labor force statistics from November with past numbers. Jim Pethokoukis of AEI tweeted this morning:

“If labor force size was same as Oct., U-3 [i.e., core] unemployment rate would [now] be 8.9%; [if labor force size was] same as when Obama took office, [then U-3 unemployment would be] 11%.”

Eleven percent unemployment would be staggering. The only reason it appears to be 8.6% is because the workforce has contracted.

Those who have given up looking for jobs are not included in unemployment statistics.

These latest government statistics should not fool people. The workforce has shrunk because the American people have lost faith that Washington will implement job-creating policies.

The graph above shows the incompetence of the Obama Administration’s economic policies. The dark blue line is where the Obama Administration promised we would be, thanks to its massive stimulus package. The gray line is where they said we would be without the stimulus package. The red dots show where we have been—a deeply disconcerting reality.

This is unacceptable, and today’s report of “falling unemployment” gives false hope to the American people. President Obama’s “Hope and Change” economic policies are not providing hope, and we certainly are not seeing change. We must not let the White House and the media skew these statistics and deliver the wrong message to America.

The economy added 120,000 jobs in November, while 315,000 unemployed workers lost hope and gave up looking...and the lamestream media Obot cheerleaders are doing cartwheels predicting a recovery???

The share of Americans actively participating in the work force right now are at a historically depressed 64 percent, down from 64.2 percent in October!

The only jobs Libs know how to create is phony stimulus or government jobs. Where are all these "green" jobs he was supposed to create??? Nowhere because these jobs cost way too much to create. Meanwhile China is laughing all the way to the bank.
