  • Where is the media outrage?

Here's a comparison the media won't be making:

8 years of Bush - Gas prices up 25%
8 years of Clinton - Gas prices up 38%
4 months of Obama - Gas prices up 31.7%

When President Bush took office on January 20, 2001, the national average gas price was $1.46 per gallon. Six and a half years later, on August 27, 2007, the national average gas price had jumped to $2.76, roughly 89% higher. Compounded annually, this represents about a 10% jump each year Bush has been in office.

Now, let’s compare the numbers over the same time period for President Clinton.

When Clinton took office on January 20, 1993, the national average gas price was $1.06 per gallon. six and a half years later, the national average gas price had jumped to $1.22, roughly 15% higher. Compounded annually, this represents about a 2% jump each year.

Fast forward to January 20, 2009 when Bush left office. At that time, the average price was $1.83 per gallon, roughly 25% higher. Over Bush's entire term of office, gas increased at a compounded annual rate of approximately 2.85% per year. Now, compare that for the entire Clinton term. Over Clinton's entire term, gas went from $1.06 to $1.46 per gallon, approximately 38% higher. Over Clinton's entire term, gas prices increased at a compounded annual rate of approximately 4.1% per year (an annual rate that is approximately 44% higher than under Bush). None of these numbers are adjusted for inflation, but that likely makes little difference.

Since Obama, gasoline prices have risen from $1.83 to $2.41. That is 31.7% in only four months.

Today the average price for gas is $3.42 per gallon, up a stunning 86.8% since Obama took office.

Where is the outrage and please, don't tell me that inflation has risen that much since his election.

Gas prices here have been high 3's or more for a lot longer since obama has been in office... It is 3.49 now.

I traveled from columbus to Pittsburgh in 2008 right before my accident and paid well over 3 a gallon if it was 1.83 wow I missed it and would of stockpiled it when it was that price... I remember it being 1.90 in 2000... Then went back to 1.30 shortly after... Labor day prices... But 1.83... Hey don't remember that at all in 2009

I not an Obama fan at all....but, oil is somewhat of an international commodity, and maybe somewhat fungible...and since we ( usa ) only consume about 22% of the oil .. america doesnt really have a say in that matter..barring a catastrophe the president really has no choice, accept the SRO

Wasn't gonna reply cuz I really don't feel like arguing politics anymore, but I couldn't resist this. What conservative biased site or email or otherwise did this come from? It's so funny how desperate conservatives get, esp as gas prices have been going down lately that they pump biased propaganda in hopes the sheep will follow.

First off. Why did it go from Aug 27, 2007 to January, 20, 2009 during the Bush years as it conveniently states, "we fast forward to 2009"?

I'll tell you why. Because in July 7, 2008 the average price per gallon was $4.11 During Bush's presidency. The average west coast price was 4.55. So $4.11 divided by $1.27, when Bush took office, makes it a 323% increase during his tenure. And better yet, during that 2008 year when it rose to those all time highs, it completely crippled the economy and sent us into a depression. Period.

Sure, it's hard to control oil prices as a president. I'll give Bush that, however, his ties to the oil companies in Texas, the two wars he started, did not help the prices at the time and still have an effect today. Esp the wars.

If you'd like to check those prices yourself. Download the spreadsheet from this site for regular grade historical pricing. The numbers don't lie.

Why is it important when they left as much as during? The fact that we were paying over $4 per gallon during those crucial years of 2007-2008, during the Bush term is absolutely important. It's when the country and economy took a complete nose dive and has yet to recover. That is more telling than anything and was conveniently left out of that article you posted.

People went broke and were not spending money. Companies were looking elsewhere (other countries) for employees and cutting back as well. We've never recovered and I don't care who was in there, they weren't going to solve the problem overnight.
