  • Just the Facts 2010: Pictures

The FactCheck.org vidcast, "Just the Facts," returns with a new webisode that examines deceptions made with images. We examine whether President Obama used the wrong hand for the Pledge of Allegiance, had a teleprompter set up to talk to grade-school children, or previously was acquainted with the White House party crashers.

This video series is a product of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. FactCheck.org is a project of the APPC.
    Host: Christine Nieves
    Editor/Videographer: Jeremy Quattlebaum
    Writer: John Vettese

This is the kind of pathetic garbage that is happening more and more with everyone obtaining copies of photoshop. In years from now, we will regret the advent of the digital image era and all photos will be questioned as to their authenticity. For now, these emails only show the stupidity and fearmongering of those who concoct them and those that forward them. I for one, never believe in emails from political factions, right or left.

I agree with you Kaz, this stuff goes on from both sides and the digital age changes everthing. Websites, Bloggers can spew shit all they want and the problem is by the time you get the truth, the damage is done.

That's what this country has come to, I say it all the time, some people would rather this country fail, than Obama succeed. They're embarrassed about the job Bush did, and they want Obama to be worse, even if it means the country as a whole fails.

It's sad really and it's become a huge problem in the photographic industry. There have been many firings on newspaper staff for doctoring. Even as much as enhancing the color of the sky. Images from this era and years to come will be in question. 200 years from now, people will second guess the authenticity of any photo. The left is just as guilty as the right. There seems to be no limit that people will go. I can doctor a photo in minutes or even seconds. But I've never done so on any work that is published or as a professional.

My only advice is to be very careful about any photos you get in your email. 9 times out of 10 or even more, it's not real.

Why not track down the photo editors and slam them with fines? Or Jail time? Of course the jails are too full.

Nowadays photos can be misleading and manipulative thanks to image editing tools it's easier to send malicious photos to anyone. Always be careful on what you see on the net most of the time it's hoax.
