  • Jon Stewart Mocks Climate Deniers

Extreme weather brings out some strange behavior.

In the middle of this week's storm, Senator James Inhofe constructed an "igloo" in Washington, DC and posted a sign reading "Honk if you heart global warming." Senator Jim DeMint tweeted "It's going to keep snowing in DC until Al Gore cries uncle." Rush Limbaugh and Fox News chimed in with story after story distorting the facts to fit their dishonest narrative.

Climate deniers like Inhofe and DeMint are willfully missing the point: Extreme weather is climate change! Not only does "Snowpocalypse" not disprove global warming, it actually matches scientific predictions that climate change will increase extreme weather events of many kinds, including heavy snowfalls in regions like the Northeast.

Together, we can and must stop this disinformation campaign. Jon Stewart just did a great job taking on the deniers.

Climate change causes more severe weather

Climate change causes more severe weather

Call it “Snowpocalypse” or “Snowageddon,” the mid-Atlantic and Northwestern U.S. have seen winter storms this year that rival anything in decades. Scientists agree that this kind of extreme weather is not just consistent with climate change research, it’s the direct result of rising temperatures in our oceans.
Arm yourself with facts and join Repower America in sharing the truth about climate change and extreme weather:
Fact: Climate change causes more frequent and severe snowstorms

Record snowstorms need two things: temperatures below freezing, and very high humidity. On a planet warmer by a few degrees on average, the Northeast US will still have plenty of days below freezing; the big difference will be warmer seas producing higher levels of moisture in the air — and therefore more severe cold-season storms.1,2
Fact: We can expect more extreme weather

Scientists tell us that climate change has already led to more extreme weather in the United States and we can expect stronger hurricanes, more wildfires, heatwaves and droughts, to name a few.3 The cost of inaction could reach half a trillion dollars a year.4
Fact: The world is warming at a quickening pace

Weather in one region over days or months should not be confused with climate or the patterns of weather over decades and centuries. And the science is clear here: the last decade was the hottest on record.5 And to put this year’s weather in perspective, January was warmer than average for the continental United States.6

The same dumbasses who cant predict the weather over a 12 hour period are going to predict the earth burning up in 10 years

I dont think anyone denies there is climate change. Warming, Cooling, whatever.

The overwhelming majority dont believe Man is driving it or even affecting it by any significant amount.

This seems to be the Far Left's Religion, and you know how they dont like Religion shoved down there throats. Well how do you like it now Lefties?

I don't think this is true. I'm not a "leftie" at all on most issues, but I do work in a branch of scientific research (unrelated to climatology) and have seen/read arguments both for and against. The conclusion that I've drawn is that global warming exists and the questioning should be focused on what we should do (if anything) about it.

More than anything, I'm concerned that people who aren't well-read on the issue seem to consider themselves experts.

govt should be out of all these decisions! if you want to live a green life or have certain religious beliefs, you should be able to do whatever you want to live YOUR life the way you want. govt needs to get out of everyone's lives!

Hilarious. Does mommy know you are on the computer? I love the first grade mentality response....Bush's fault. Bush has absolutely nothing to do with this post. Oh, let me guess, in 8 years Bush was single-handedly able to destroy the environment.

The point is that we are spending billions upon billions on this stuff with no consensus that man has anything to do with it. Things are cyclical, man is very insignificant when we are talking about the entire world. We have gone through plenty of warming and cooling periods throughout time. Many of the biggest warming periods occurred well before the industrial revolution which certainly makes one question man's role.

The silly thing is that environmentalists "win" the argument either way. When it is hot they say that is global warming, when we have these snow storms across the country they say that is b/c of warming. When we have droughts that is global warming, but when we have flooding rains that is global warming. When we had that bad hurricane season a few years back that was due to global warming, but nobody talks about the quiet hurricane seasons we have had the last few years.
